In Drake Doremus’ future set love story Equals, all emotions have been suppressed, replaced by an intellectual curiosity that make for one very efficient workforce. Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult play two people inflicted with SOS, Switched On Syndrome, that allows them to slowly begin to feel their feelings.

Surrounded by a population of subordinates, the two fall in love an intensity that makes it feel like they are the last two people on earth. Stewart, who has managed to hide her “sickness” publicly, tries to suppress her feelings, knowing that if found out, the two will be sent to a rehabilitation center that ends in suicide or death. The film takes a Shakespearean twist that makes us think that the future might not be so bleak after all.

The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Stewart to discuss the real-life training she had for turning off her emotions and how her first love was all too close to the role. Equals premieres in Toronto Sept. 13, with worldwide sales handled by Mister Smith Entertainment.

You constantly shift in the movie between being “on” and “off.” Was it difficult to switch back and forth between those two feelings? It just became the most bleak, awful…It's so sad. I'm the only person in the movie who's switched on the whole time so even though in the beginning, we're seemingly off, the overtly emotional displays and the more raw scenes felt amazing to do and more natural and more familiar. What was really painful was not feeling. What was truly really exhausting was to just be dead.

How did you manage to suppress your emotionless for this role? I'm playing somebody who is constantly stifling this thing and I can completely relate to that. Anybody who's had a bad day or maybe like is just PMS-ing or just feeling too much on a certain day where you have to go and show face, I've had to do that a lot, an exceptional amount. I know that feeling and that is so familiar to me to feel something so hard and have to go into work and say ‘Good Morning,’ and not show emotions.

Is there anything appealing in this world? We have pills to turn off negative emotions like depression or anxiety. I was going to say, that's what people try to do all the time. I think that’s why Drake conceived of this in this way. I barely even take Advil when I have a headache. I really like to feel. You need that balance.

The reason, it sounds really obvious, the only reason something feels really good, it’s because you didn’t know it before. If you fall in love, it's because it captures you and sweeps you off your feet. If you didn't have anxiety, then you wouldn't have passion for anything. The reason we have anxiety is because you care and you're thoughtful. Some people work to have a weekend and so on the weekend they genuinely don't think about anything apart from the fact that they're on their weekend. Some people are like that so maybe some people would be like, ‘Yeah that'd be great. Take away my anxiety and give me a nice lounge chair.’ But I would be so not interested in that.

There seemed to be a parallel in the film with the celebrity world, being told what to do, eat, wear all the time. Is it difficult for you sometimes to do your own thing? It's never difficult for me to do it but it has been difficult sometimes to hear people's response to it, to things that I just think are so insignificant, as insignificant as not wanting to wear heels for five hours or more significantly the way people choose to live their lives. Why do people care? Why do you care? I'm sorry, have I let you down or something? You don't even know me.

I think the only hard part of that for me is that I really love what I do and I love people and want to be good to people. If I'm in restaurant and somebody doesn't treat a waitress right, I literally will leave. I will unfriend you. You are not my friend anymore. The idea that I don't care or if people are like ‘She just has doesn't give a f—, attitude,’ it truly is the opposite of that so I definitely care that people think that. But I care more about staying true to myself.

As an actor, how do you deal with the industry of celebrity? It's weird. It's bizarre. It's like this whole other form of entertainment, which I get. I just wish that people saw through it a little bit more. It doesn't need to go away. It's just so ridiculously grey. I think I can find a little bit of comfort in that and know that people know that. I think people understand that. It's like something bad happens to you. You do an interview that you mess up, say something stupid, say something you don't mean and you just think it's end-all because it has emotionally affected you.

In a week, people will move on to the next thing because it's business and it's fuelled by money, therefore you can't take it too seriously. You know for a fact that a dozen articles aren't written about some slip up you made because they care. They're written because it's going to make them money and they're going to get a lot of hits on their websites. So you're like, ‘OK, I get it. Go make f—ing money on me.’ It's awesome.

In the scene in Equals, where your characters first touch, the audience let out a collective gasp. Did you draw from your first love for this role? Totally. One of the reasons I was so intimidated by this movie is because I was like, ‘This is gonna hurt. I don't want to think about all that.’ It's good, it's cathartic, it's worth it. I feel good now on the other side of it. But at first I was like ‘Oh God.’ If we do this right it's so basic, it's so fundamental, it's so young. Obviously Nick and I are 25. We made the movie nearly a year ago. We're still very close to our first loves. It's definitely something that we both know so well. It was a painful movie to make in every way. It was exuberant, cathartic and at the same time almost too self-reflective. We would go home and be like, ‘We seriously need a drink. Let's just stop thinking about everything. Let's not talk. Let's just take a walk.’

The movie is also a metaphor for long-term relationships. What do you think is the secret to a successful relationship? When you love something, you get to know it. Then you feel the ownership and if it changes, you only love it as far as you know it because then you're like, ‘What is this?’ I think maybe the key to having a long relationship is really appreciating that person’s life and not trying to own it. It's like just stop trying. We all do it.

The thing about the end of the movie as well is it is a metaphor for ebb and flow. There are times where you're with someone for five years and on year three you're like "ehhhh." Then something can happen. Maybe you take a little space or something. All of a sudden it just floods back. To just walk away can be a scary thing. The film is open ended but with hope. If you want to keep trying, it's worth it.

Did you see a lot of similarities between Bella in Twilight and this role? There's an obvious similarity there, but it's a little bit different because in this case I played the pragmatic one. I played the one that thought this isn't right and we shouldn't do this. He's the one who's like no, let’s do this. It was a bit of a role reversal. But I love love stories.

Both of them are very simple and I think that's why I really liked them. Both of them, you can criticise each character for being weak because they give it all up for a man. But I think that that is the most f—ing courageous thing you can do. There's nothing weak about being subject to something. In fact, in order to open yourself up and let all of your guards down and just give yourself to something fully, no matter what anyone else thinks, whether they think it's the right thing for you or not, I just love that. I just f—ing love that. That's so feminine. That's what women do. We have a faith in ourselves that is unpragmatic and in each other that's just emotional and f—ing strong. Both of those characters are criticized for being weak, for being subject to a man, but I think that that's a really bold and natural thing that we all want.

Do you feel typecast when you're given those kinds of roles? No because I started when I was really young, as a kid and then I still feel like I'm a kid. But more so when I was younger, I was attracted to things that felt immediately close to me. That was what moved me. I know I can do that, that is me. I then feel like even with this new character that I'm playing, I wouldn't want to play her unless I think somewhere in there, she's there. I’m not a character actor at all. If I were to play a murderous villain, I would justify why they murdered people. I would be like, ‘Well you know what? They had a terrible upbringing.’ I would have to understand them. I can never disagree with people that I play, which sometimes could be a problem. It could limit me, but I don't think so. I think it just might make me better at what I choose.

ACTING UP: Kristen Stewart, who has appeared in campaigns for Chanel and is regularly front-row at its shows, is to appear in a film being made for the French house’s next Métiers d’Arts show, scheduled for Dec. 1 in Rome.

Sitting in the director’s chair, Karl Lagerfeld wrapped the two-day shoot at Luc Besson’s studio in Paris last month, and conceived the intriguing storyline: A fictional, behind-the-scenes look at a yet-to-be-made biopic about founder Gabrielle Chanel.

Stewart is to portray an actress slated to impersonate the designer as a young woman, while Geraldine Chaplin, who has portrayed a middle-aged Chanel in previous films by Lagerfeld, is in the frame, too.

Lagerfeld said Stewart, best known for the “Twilight” series and her recent turn in “Still Alice,” relished the role, and played it to the hilt. “She played it really, really mean,” he said. “You only see her in tests and she’s complaining about everything. She’s mean with the director; mean with the producer.”

Much of the movie takes place in the office of the would-be film’s producer, and a corridor. Lagerfeld conceived the plot, dialogue, costumes and casting, also roping in Harper’s Bazaar editor Laura Brown to portray an American journalist. “They make so many movies about Chanel, why can’t I make one?” he shrugged.

Are you finally ready to take Kristen Stewart seriously as an actress? We are — and most critics are, too. Since the Twilight saga wrapped in 2012, the 25-year-old has impressed with dramatic turns in films such as Camp X-Ray, Still Alice and Clouds of Sils Maria, for which she won a best supporting actress Cesar Award earlier this year. For those unfamiliar, it’s essentially the French equivalent of an Oscar and she’s the first American to ever win one. And with roles lined up in new Woody Allen, Ang Lee and Kelly Reichardt films, Kristen is exactly where she wants to be in her career. Promoting her latest, American Ultra, she told USA TODAY: “It’s nice to have people be like, ‘Hey, good job.’ But I’ve always been really confident about my path. It’s hard for me to speak to the whole idea of fewer roles for women, even though it’s absolutely true, because I’m just like, kind of swimming around this Olympic-sized pool of indulgence, which is so unbelievably lucky. And so (the Cesar) was just kind of a nice pat on the back. Honestly, it was just really cool to get together with everyone and go, ‘(Expletive) yeaaah.’ “ And with the entire awards show in French, she was especially surprised to hear her name called. “I’m going to be so real with you — I was in utter disbelief sitting there next to Juliette (Binoche, her co-star), who told me, ‘It is crazy you were even considered to be nominated! No way, no way! They’ll never give it to you!’ So I was just sitting there, we were just shooting the (expletive), hanging out, like, ‘Oh, is this the category?’ And then all of a sudden the row cleared out. It was awesome.”

You play Phoebe, the girlfriend of Jesse Eisenberg’s character, inAmerican Ultra. What about the movie intrigued you? It’s a spectacularly broad comedy, but it’s also grounded in a very sweet, genuine love story: Two unassuming stoner kids are thrown into, like, theBourne Supremacy and turn into sleeper-cell-like agents fighting for their lives. It’s crazy. Did you like doing your own stunts? As much as I can. I am definitely not a wimp. I didn’t entirely realize: Action movies hurt. You have to be down to take a hit. I went home with some serious bruising—and by the way, that’s the best. I would literally go home and be, “Check it out.” Are you pleased with the life you’ve chosen? At my age, people are just trying to figure out what they want to do, and I’ve been reaping the benefits for so long from a decision I made as a tiny kid. I feel like I got such a head start on the game. I want to keep running. What are you passionate about? I love writing poetry. It’s my favorite thing to do. I’m trying to push that into what I also love, which is filmmaking.

What’s it like being with Kristen Stewart in public? Imagine walking around with a jaguar that everyone wants to stare at and pet, even though they know they’re supposed to be cool—even when a big, rare cat is all up in their coffee spot. Problem is, no one can be totally chill around the actress. Not even Stewart herself.

Excruciatingly aware of her fame, Stewart the Global Movie Star orders an almond milk latte at her favorite Echo Park café in a manner best described as awkward-charm offense. She chats with the barista about the café’s latest expansion, yadda yadda yadda, while nervously raking her hands through her choppy bob. Stewart’s chatter isn’t the most natural thing in the world, but its tacit message is clear: See, I’m a nice, regular person. Tell all your friends!

Walking through the outside patio is hardly better. Anyone who isn’t buried in her laptop recognizes That Girl From Twilight. A few whisper or drink her in greedily before looking away, but it hardly matters. The charge is in the air. Stewart’s body is tense, her eyes cast down until she flops into a seat in the most remote corner, an amused, near-exasperated expression on her face.

“I really wish I could not be fucking recognizable,” she says in a low voice. “It’s so annoying. I fucking hate people looking at me when all I want to do is look back at them.”

Stewart swears exuberantly and often, fueled by something closer to joy than aggression, in a way that acknowledges the fizzing Roman candle that is life. She’s also direct in what she says, sometimes blunt, but it never feels mean, even when she says, “That’s not something I would ever talk to the fucking public about—that’s crazy,” regarding whether she’s still in contact with her ex-boyfriend/Twilight franchise co-star Robert Pattinson. Instead, she comes across as honest—bridge-burningly, disarmingly honest—which is why her friends, fans, and the tabloids love her.

Her uncompromising sense of authenticity is also why Stewart is repeatedly cast in roles that require her to say what others can’t or won’t say (see: the sensitive daughter who won’t promise college to her dying mother in Still Alice, or the assistant who calls out the snobbery of her charge, Juliette Binoche’s grand dame of the theater, in Clouds of Sils Maria). She’ll occupy another such role in Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, out next year, as the titular character’s sister who opposes the Iraq War: “He comes back a changed person and she doesn’t recognize her brother. I’m the one thing trying to keep him home, the one clear perspective on the other side in the whole movie.”

In American Ultra, out now, her character is less contrarian, but just as emotionally explicit. “I’m always fucking terrified before every role,” she says. “Even if it’s fun and stupid or whatever. American Ultra is a stoner comedy, but it was physically strenuous, and to try and tell such an absurd story but keep it grounded so people will believe it is really hard.”

Riley Keough, who first met Stewart when they were in The Runaways together, breaks down Stewart’s fiery allure this way: “She just doesn’t give a fuck. She courageously exposes herself because she loves the art. And I think she understands what comes along with that. There’s not one part of that girl that’s caught up in Hollywood or cares about the opinions of others or whatever else, and I’ve probably met three people like that in my life.”

Stewart’s not about to let fame turn her into a weirdo who can’t connect anymore, who only speaks in PR-approved statements—especially when it comes to her sexuality and relationships. But what Stewart, now 25, will share and won’t share is a fascinating algorithm she’s honed over time. She refuses to offer up her life for tabloid sport, but she’s also not afraid to be raw and open.

Take the beginning of our day, for instance. For several hours, all I know is that Stewart is coming to pick me up at 2 p.m. We have no set plans because she rejected all previously offered suggestions: roller derby, guitar lessons, etc. Around 2:15, she calls from an unblocked number to say she’s outside. In today’s PR-choke-hold era, a star of Stewart’s wattage would usually be delivered to a neutral meeting place, no contact info exchanged, but aside from her longtime publicist setting the date and time, Stewart skipped those formalities.

Instead, she lets me crawl into her rough-and-tumble SUV, which is loaded up with trash bags filled with swag, earmarked for Goodwill.

“I get sent a lot of stuff,” says Stewart, alluding to the fact that she can boost a fashion career by wearing something once in front of the cameras. Peeking out of one bag is a pair of wedge sneakers with a graphic pattern that seems too, um, much for Stewart. Dressed in faded Levi’s, white Vans, and a vintage skateboarding T-shirt, her style is more skate-shop employee with a medical marijuana card. A chunky silver link chain with a miniature padlock adorns her neck. Flecks of navy eyeliner rim her hazel eyes, giving her a sexy slept-in look.

“I’m a skater,” says Stewart, citing her preferred mode of transport to school while growing up in the San Fernando Valley. “I’m not a hard-core skater chick—I can skate on the street, but I don’t like to trick shit out. Skating around downtown might be my happy place.”

But for our interview, she’s not up for what she teasingly calls “activities.” She wants to talk, so we set off for her favorite coffee shop, some 10 minutes away from her home east of Hollywood.

On her own time, Stewart’s got nothing against a lazy Sunday—as long as it has a touch of aggression. Growing up with three brothers gave her a fierce competitive edge. As the lone female, “I wasn’t treated better and I wasn’t treated worse,” she says. “I really was one of the boys. I think there’s an ambition that’s probably innately drilled into me.”

In short: “I like to win shit,” she says, flashing a rare full smile. “I love games of all kinds,” but billiards, Frisbee, and playing with her two dogs rank high.

Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson, who acted with Stewart in Zathura when he was just 12 years old, says Stewart’s never lost her sense of fun: “She’s been faced with a lot of big things in her life, but she hasn’t changed. She’s still the same carefree, cool girl.”

Her tomboy spirit is why she clicks with like-minded musicians such as Patti Smith, who once came up to Stewart at an On the Road party to offer support with the words, “Your people are here for you,” and Joan Jett, whom Stewart portrayed in The Runaways. Stewart still laughs thinking of Jett’s primal guitar lessons: “If I wasn’t fully feeling it, she’d walk to the end of whatever set or stage I was on and be like, ‘Kristen, pussy to the wood!’”

Stewart also cleans up nicely, which is how she came to be Chanel’s unlikely muse. “I really like tapping into unexplored aspects of myself; obviously, that’s what I do,” she says. “Clothes can seriously do that, but you don’t want your clothes to wear you. So often I’m like, ‘Oh man, that is going to own my ass.’” Luckily, Karl Lagerfeld gives his muse full license to play: “He lets me chop dresses, he lets me steal a belt from that dress and wrap it around another.... I’m really into the performance aspect of it, but I still have to make it my own. I don’t want to feel like I’m wearing a costume.”

At the café, once the patrons have forgotten Stewart’s here, talk inevitably turns to the latest tabloid storm brewing in the star’s life. A few days ago, Kristen’s mother, Jules Stewart, confirmed to the Sunday Mirror that her daughter is in a relationship with Alicia Cargile, a visual effects producer. In the interview, ostensibly about Jules’s charity work with wolves, she said: “I’ve met Kristen’s new girlfriend, I like her,” and “I feel like people need to be free to love whoever they want. I accept my daughter loves women and men.”

Enter a parade of think pieces, photo galleries parsing Stewart’s androgynous wardrobe, and the re-emergence of the unfortunate portmanteau “Krisbian,” designated for fans who’d “go lesbian” just for their beloved.

Perhaps more than any other star of her generation, Stewart’s relationship to the gossip machine is tempestuous, to put it lightly, and it underscores the monstrosity of the 24-hour news cycle. “It’s funny when older actors are like, ‘Just give them a smile.’ I’m like, ‘You have no idea what you’re talking about, but thanks!’ It must’ve been awesome without the Internet.”

She’s fully aware that every twist in her love life is feverishly documented whether she cooperates or not: “It’s like I’m involved in a weekly comic book. I have this assigned personality...which I helped create, I suppose. People stand to make a lot of money on people like me—it’s this booming industry, so why would you go and change the character that people are paying for?”

But her character is changing, because, after all, she’s 25. Is she ready right now to make any big pronouncements about her sexuality?

Yes...

“Google me, I’m not hiding.”

...And no: “If you feel like you really want to define yourself, and you have the ability to articulate those parameters and that in itself defines you, then do it. But I am an actress, man. I live in the fucking ambiguity of this life and I love it. I don’t feel like it would be true for me to be like, ‘I’m coming out!’ No, I do a job. Until I decide that I’m starting a foundation or that I have some perspective or opinion that other people should be receiving…I don’t. I’m just a kid making movies.”

That’s not all there is, though, to Stewart’s reluctance to categorize her sexuality. She also believes in fluidity, the kind that prompted Miley Cyrus to say to Paper magazine recently that she’s “literally open to every single thing that is consenting.”

Stewart adds, “I think in three or four years, there are going to be a whole lot more people who don’t think it’s necessary to figure out if you’re gay or straight. It’s like, just do your thing.”

She’s the first to admit that during her early Twilight years, she didn’t have her boundaries figured out—not sexually, but with the press. “There must’ve been so many reporters who would sit in front of me and think, ‘This kid is going to break down.’ I’m sure that I’ve made people so uncomfortable.” Back then, when faced with a tough question, Stewart would “either get pissed off or all of a sudden be thrown.”

Now she’s found her own way of responding fully but enigmatically: “I’ve worked really hard at feeling free and open while not selling it, or helping someone else sell it.”

Above all the chatter and feedback, Stewart focuses on her work. That’s what sustains her, and she’s planted her roots deep in the industry. “I’m sure that I can keep working,” she says. “Positive. There’s really not a whole lot that I could do right now to fuck it up for myself.”

Her American Ultra co-star and good friend Jesse Eisenberg backs up her confidence: “She’s one of the actors consistently working who you know will make things good. Out of all of the attributes that she has—her sense of humor, her willingness to embrace the tone of the project—there’s also this healthy form of self-awareness, to understand what the story needs, what the big picture is, and the value of your place in it. It’s rare for someone as well known as her to be so humble. She’s not overshadowing the story; she’d prefer to hide in the role than show off.”

For any doubters who remain, Stewart’s full slate of coming attractions should prove her range. She can’t say much about her role in a new Woody Allen project, also with Eisenberg, but she promises that “it’s a stretch, to say the least.”

As an actress, she gets to indulge her curiosity—unlike at the café, where she stays hidden until we leave, not daring to lock eyes with anyone. Afterwards, we walk to an artsy curio shop and boutique grocery store, where once again she keeps her head down and chats self-consciously with the cashier while buying some ghee. Trailed by whispers everywhere we go, Stewart transforms into a protective animal, subtly checking her territory for interlopers until we’re safely ensconced in her car again. “This is why I barely ever go shopping,” she says with a sigh as she starts the engine.
