I like Gmail, especially the interface. I feel like every time I use it I discover a slick new aspect to the interface. One thing I don’t like is the paging buttons, to move back and forth between older and newer messages. Almost every time I need to move back a screen I end up scrolling the ad that is right above my messages. I think that a little more separation would be good, or somehow calling more attention to the paging buttons, rather than the ad scroller.

One thing I love about WordPress is that someone has always done what I need to do, and oftentimes they created a plugin to do it. Most recently I was preparing a site that I developed on one URL to move to another URL and I wanted to make all of the in-content links and image references relative to the site root, rather than absolute. I use the Search and Replace plugin to clean things up in a matter of seconds – nice!

My ColdFusion Builder journey has begun. I am used to working in Dreamweaver, and already there are two things that I miss:

I wish that I could set up a project, give it a URL, and then hit the files in the preview browsers. I don’t like that I have to configure a server. Because of our server setup, this is not convenient. I even went through the trouble of setting one up, but CF Builder doesn’t recognize it when I try to add it to the project, which is odd since it knows it is there and running.

I wish I could Find/Replace in the file system, like I can in Dreamweaver. CF Builder only provides Find and Replace functionality within a file.

I know that I am just getting started and I need to give it some time.

I was just reading this article comparing Google Search and Bing and I decided to check out both pages. I usually do most of my searching via the Chrome ‘Omnibox,’ or whatever it is called. When I went to www.google.com I noticed that it had a different, slicker appearance than I was used to. The buttons were styled diferently. And then, after about 3 seconds, more content faded in. Anyone know anything about this? How long has it been like this? There are some screenshots in the review I was reading and they don’t even match the new look and feel.

I think they might also be doing some browser sniffing, because it looked better in Chrome than in IE – and not just the normal stuff. It looked like different styles were being applied.

I don’t have a TV in my house, so I have to watch all of the NCAA tournament games on my computer. Originally I was navigating to the games through cbssports.com, the official site of the games. I was checking something on ESPN and I noticed that they also link to the games – and it is easier for me to navigate. Maybe it is because I am more used to it. I also think that they have a simpler, more clear, layout.

It is not very often that a web site like ESPN’s will drive traffic to another web site. It is working, at least for me. I am on ESPN.com a lot more now than cbssports.com.

For the past three days I was at the Future of Web Apps conference in Miami Beach, FL. Overall I thought it was a great conference.

The conference started on Monday, with registration, demos, eating, drinking, and networking. This was supposed to be on the beach, but it was ‘cold’, windy, and raining so it was inside. I arrived a little late and made it just in time to register and hang out for a while.

The real deal started Tuesday, which was a day full of speakers. Overall it was a great speaker line-up with a good mix or marketing, motivation, and technical topics.

On Wednesday I participated in two workshops. The first workshop focused on Facebook Connect, how to use it in an application, and how not to use it. It was led by a former Facebook employee so there was a lot of useful information given out.

The second workshop I went to covered the basics and not so basics of jQuery. I have been using jQuery for a little while now, so the actual content wasn’t that useful for me. The session was led by John Resig, who created jQuery and still leads the group that develops it. It was amazing to see how well he used it and learn some of the techniques he used. I walked out feeling like I needed to rewrite everything I have ever written in in jQuery. John also used a really cool slide deck, which was actually just a big web page that he manipulated using jQuery. This setup allowed him to demonstrate the features without having to flip between the browser and powerpoint.

When I wasn’t at the conference I had a great time in Miami Beach, meeting a lot of interesting people. It is always inspiring and humbling to hear about some of the cool things that people are doing on the web.

I really like jQuery UI, but I was having some issues with the accordion in IE6. It was hiding some of the content after I expanded a section. The content it was hiding was in a table, but in fiddling with the code it turns out that it was hiding random things in the div, not just the table.

I fixed the issue by setting ‘animated:false’ when I called the accordion. I actually used cgi.http_user_agent to sniff out the browser and if it is IE 6 I call the file with the animation disabled. Otherwise I call the original file.
