Remember on April 1st when I said I would be taking a hiatus from Magpie Mondays until late May but that I would post some interesting bits in the meanwhile? Yeah, that all went down the drain. Not even a Video Friday last week! But I can see the light at the end of what has been a terribly long tunnel at work, and I’ll try to be better for the next couple weeks.

Today I offer a charming short film, The Last Bookshop. Here’s the official description from youtube (but also check out the website):

The Last Bookshop imagines a future where physical books have died out.

One day, a small boy’s holographic entertainment fails, so he heads out to explore the streets of abandoned shops outside. Down a forgotten alley he discovers the last ever bookshop. And inside, an ancient shopkeeper has been waiting over 25 years for a customer…

Produced by The Bakery in the South-East of England, filming took place in 2011, with post-production completed in 2012. The music was composed by Owen Hewson and performed by Arlet.

Veteran actor Alfred Hoffman stars alongside youthful co-star Joe Holgate.

It is written by Richard Dadd, who also co-directs alongside Dan Fryer.

We love bookshops. But we saw that many are going through tough times.

We wanted to contribute to the cultural debate with our own celebration in support of these glorious independents and their shelves of treasures. So with the help of some remarkable independent bookshops, and a lot of talented friends, we have been able to make our idea for The Last Bookshop into a reality. We hope you enjoy this film and share it with your friends…

So here I am, sharing it with my friends:

Paintwork is a short film based on Tim Maughan’s short story of the same name (which you can read here). The technique, as you’ll read in the official description below, is pretty neat.

New Scientist’s Arc Magazine and science fiction author Tim Maughan are proud to announce the online debut of the low budget, experimental short film Paintwork. Set in near-future Bristol—the British city known internationally for spawning Banksy—it follows augmented reality graffiti artist 3Cube as she illegally transforms an all-too familiar advertising billboard into a work of high tech street art, and poses questions about the relationships between technology, advertising and the control of public spaces.

Heavily influenced by Chris Marker’s seminal 1962 film La Jetée, Paintwork blends still photography by Laurie Eagle and computer animation by Alan Tabrett with audio from two stalwarts of the Bristol music scene in the form of narration by renowned MC Koast and an exclusive soundtrack from influential dubstep producer Forsaken. Based on the title short story from Maughan’s critically acclaimed collection, Paintwork was premiered in an early form in February as part of the arts festival Sonic Acts in Amsterdam….

♦ In case you didn’t know, Japanese schoolgirls rock. Case in point: a new fad where the young ladies take photos of themselves imitating the Kamehameha, an energy attack seen in the anime Dragon Ball (and thus not to be confused with Kamehameha, the first king of the Hawaiian Islands). Blastr calls the trend “simultaneously funny and awesome,” though I would put more emphasis on the awesome.
♦ Time to report the sad news (for some): April is indeed going to be the cruelest month for me—if I said aloud how many students essays and stories I had to read and how many critiques I had to write this month, the baby Jesus would cry—so for a while I’m going to suspend Magpie Mondays. I’ll try and post some interesting bits every now and again, and sometime in May I’ll re-start Magpie Mondays, and maybe even have time for additional posts.

♦ The Art of Spring and Mythic March.

Spring officially hit the calendars last week, but I think many people would consider that idea a bit ludicrous, given how cold it’s been recently. Me, I’m only happy when it rains, so the resurgence of rain and wind and cold temperatures doesn’t bother me. Still, in deference to those who need a bit more sun and warmth, I offer to you Irene Gallo’s re-post of Picturing Spring: An Equinox Celebration at Tor.com. Even if Spring is only my third favorite season (sometimes tied for second with Autumn), I love much of the artwork Gallo shares in that post, like J.C. Leyendecker’s ode to spring:

To put some more spring in your step, check out some other art I ran across last week, like Cecelia Paredes’s ornate camouflage wallpaper portraits. I love the attention to detail.

Cecilia Paredes

Or how about Mark Abouzeid’s re-imagined Renaissance portraits as realistic photos?

Mark Abouzeid

I’d neglected last week to mention Mythic March, an idea conceived by Grace of Domythic Bliss (who also writes a couple of my other favorite blogs, The Beautiful Necessity about “all things Pre-Raphaelite and Arts & Crafts,” and Catty-Corner Cottage, where she shares how she and her husband “paint up, fix, decorate, and otherwise learn how to be first time home owners”) and Lisa Stock who created the InByTheEye film company (her short films are really lovely). As Grace says,

The goal of [Mythic March] is to CREATE. Originally inspired by National Novel Writing Month, an event that encourages people to write the novel they always meant to every November, my friend Lisa Stock and I decided to try doing something similar in March, only with a twist.

My goal will be to write 30,000 words, and I might make that goal or I might not. But the point is, I’m going to try to CREATE this month … consciously set aside time each day to engage in the act of creation. And beyond that, my goal is to create in the genre of myth and imagination … to celebrate the community of Mythic Arts we so adore.

You can read more about Mythic March as a concept here at Domythic Bliss. At that blog, Grace has chosen Mondays as times for readers (and herself) to share what they’ve been making. You can catch up on March 4th, March 11th, and March 18th (today’s post comes out after I’ve put Magpie Monday to bed, I’m afraid). If you click on only one link, try March 18th, which features lots of projects. Like NaNoWriMo, I think Mythic March is a grand idea.

♦ CultureMass.

Check out the new website CultureMass, whose editor-in-chief is my friend Cameron Cook. Here’s the skinny:

CultureMass is a publication founded by talented writers who are profoundly interested in entertainment, culture, and the many ways that they intersect. We’re from all over the world, and we are connected only by our need to make sense of everything.

If you love Film, TV, Games, Science, or Literature [also Music, Graphic Novels, etc.], you’ll find something here that you like.

CultureMass has been created with one goal in mind: Discuss, review, and dissect popular culture constructively and creatively. We’re not out to write bad reviews. We’re not trying to impress our readers with our insults and barbs.

If we don’t like something, we show empathy. If we love something, we tell you why. That doesn’t mean everything here is positive, but that we will never bully, insult, or alienate those who are making their living producing creative work.

If any of this sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, then you’d better get comfortable. You may be here awhile.

Several of my former or current students are writing for CultureMass, like Thomas Dempsey (music editor), Daniel Dye (TV editor), Caroline Whitney (columnist), and David Mruz (columnist). My colleague Terry Barr is also writing music reviews. Check it out!

♦ Viewers’ Paradise.

Super Punch, another favorite blog of mine, posted this clip from the great but too-early-canceled Carnivale, the entire run of which I watched recently (you may remember). If you can watch this scene and not wish that you had watched the entire series (because, oh boy, does this scene kill it), maybe we can’t be friends.

Speaking of dream sequences, check out the A.V. Club’s “What a Nightmare!”: 21 TV Episodes that Do Dream Sequences Right (including the one above). Some really great dreams. Via.

Gates McFadden keeps one of the most delightful tumblrs ever for the Ensemble Studio Theatre of Los Angeles where she’s the artistic director: she posts photographs of a 1/8 size Dr. Beverly Crusher action figure (the character, of course, McFadden played on Star Trek: The Next Generation) having all kinds of adventures. Here’s a sample but do click the link above for more. Via.

Downton Zombey is the inevitable mash-up of Downton Abbey and, well, zombies. It’s a fun little piece but it is full of spoilers for season 3 (which I haven’t seen yet, but I already know the big spoilers). Via.

The 12 best non-U.S. sitcoms of the past 30 years. I can certain attest to the hilarity of Absolutely Fabulous, The Office, The League of Gentlemen, and The Young Ones. But no love for That Mitchell and Webb Look?

Oh my goodness, I really want to see Top of the Lake, a mini-series co-written by Jane Campion. Go read this Flavorwire article about the show and see if you don’t want to watch it, too!

Elisabeth Moss in Top of the Lake

Film.com has a good article about Lynne Ramsay, and Why We Need to Talk about How We Talk about Female Directors. Via.

The greatest fantasy films you haven’t seen. I’ve seen The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec, and I want to see several more films on the list.

I can’t help it: this teaser trailer for Riddick gave me a rush.

Not, perhaps, as much of a rush as seeing the trailer for Hummingbird, a new Jason Statham movie, though:

Before and Afterlives collects the majority of what I think of as my best and better stories from the last decade, the first decade of my life as a publishing writer. They are mainly stories of the supernatural, or contemporary fantasies (the word fantasy writers and publishers used to use for what is often now called urban fantasy, which is a term I think is too limiting in terms of setting). But there are several speculative fiction/scifi-ish stories included in the collection as well. In many ways, it’s the kind of mixed genre collection I used to enjoy as a young reader: in one story you’ll encounter a beached mermaid who is taken in by a woman whose daughter has disappeared, in another you’ll witness a haunted house destroy the lives of several different families over a century, and in yet another you’ll come across a young man whose lover has been stolen away from him someone who just might be an alien. There’s a girl who can call ghosts to her, and a man trying to survive the end of the world. There’s a contagion that causes people to vanish, little by little, and there’s a young man who makes his living by allowing other people to kill him for a fee, and to let them witness his remarkable ability to resurrect.

Juan Santapau

You are doubly lucky because the awesome Kate Beaton also has a new cartoon up, Anne of Cleves Gables, which I just adored.

The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe REDUXE Edition had two fine new entries last week, Cloak re-imagined by Roderick Constance and Galactus as seen by Andrew Belanger. I like how Constance toned down Cloak, muting the color of his cloak and making the interior a pure black. Belanger’s Galactus made me smile—the fast food is very clever.
I’ve really been getting a kick out of A Softer World by Emily Horne and Joey Comeau (I recently bought a copy of Comeau’s book The Complete Lockpick Pornography, so they must be doing something right) and am enamored of their technique of dividing a single image into thirds. I enjoyed these two strips particularly last week:

The trip to Paris was absolutely wonderful, thanks to the fine planning of my colleagues Molly and Patrick and to a terrific group of students—so wonderful, in fact, that I didn’t want to come home. Ah, well. I suppose what this means is that I mustn’t take too long to go abroad again.

I had three favorite things on the trip: the visit to Musée d’Orsay, our Baguettes to Bistro: Culinary Traditions of Paris food tour with Alisa Morov, and the reading by John Baxter at Shakespeare and Co. I hadn’t been to the Musée d’Orsay before, but I think it must be my favorite museum in Paris (yes, even more so than the Louvre). Their gallery of marble statues was just breathtaking, like Vierge au lys (1878) by Eugène Delaplanche, at left, which just enchanted me. I was also quite taken with The Angel of the Odd: Dark Romanticism from Goya to Max Ernst exhibition, which our friend and art historian extraordinaire Laura had alerted Molly to, and we actually saw it on the day after it opened (how fortuitous for us!). The exhibition had a bit of everything: paintings, sculptures, films.

Katherine Langrish wrote a blog post called The Wild Hunt Rides over Paris wherein she examines a painting by Adolphe Willette called Parce Domine (she also references in the post the origin of the word “bistro,” which I learned about on the food tour mentioned above). Her connecting the wild hunt to this painting seems apt to me—a very Parisian wild hunt, but still! Ah, Montmartre! Click to embiggen!

Parce Domine by Alfred Willette

In honor of the Paris Metro, I offer my favorite Berlin song, “Metro.” No, the Metro looks nothing like the stylized depiction in the video, but I love this song:

Not the Paris subway, but the entrance to the Bockenheimer Warte subway station in Frankfurt is pretty darn cool. Via.

Also, this:

Maybe I should have done a section on subways? Here’s a very cool idea I discovered at BookRiot: a subway library designed by Miami Ad School students wherein “posters with book titles and scannable barcodes are placed in subway cars where riders scan a book they are interested in (using Near Field Communication) and immediately get a ten-page preview. At the end of the preview, readers are prompted with the location of the closest library where the book is available.” More images here. Via.

♦ Viewers’ Paradise.

I’m pretty excited about the upcoming season of Mad Men, and the season 6 poster has enticed me (click to see it larger). Don Draper looking back at himself? The street signs “One Way” and “Stop”? Everything kind of tilted? Police in the background? Enticed, I tell you! Also, Flavorwire has fun over-analyzing the Mad Men Season 6 promo photos.

Haters gonna hate, but I’m looking forward to Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing:

Also, Jess Nevins has detailed annotations of the latest Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill League of Extraordinary Gentlemen graphic novel, Nemo: Heart of Ice. As always, Nevins’ annotations are highly recommended.

Tim Callahan’s Sandman reread continues with World’s End, the eighth volume and the third short-story collection in the Sandman oeuvre.
I’m not entirely thrilled by Kiel West‘s interpretation of Nightcrawler over at The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe REDUXE Edition (frankly, improving on Dave Cockrum is just plain difficult), but I do like West’s take on his costume (click to embiggen). Fara, fellow and favorite Nightcrawler aficionado, what do you think?

Here’s a slew of mash-up covers from Super-Team Family that I thought really rocked. First up is the Legion of Super-Heroes versus Dark Phoenix, which I think is a pretty perfect mashing.

And I love how perfectly Spider-Man and Two-Face mashed up together:

♦ The Horns of Elfland.

Have you heard of Little Boots? I’m not familiar with her, but I’m swooning over “Motorway,” the first track from her new album, Nocturnes.

By now, I’m sure everybody’s heard and seen the new single by David Bowie, “The Stars (Are Out Tonight),” but in case you haven’t, check it out.
Indulging my Mad Men kick a little longer: the theme song to MM—”A Beautiful Mine” by RJD2—mashed up with the lyrics to “Nature Boy,” originally sung by Nat King Cole (whose birthday was yesterday). The song’s performed by Allison Williams (of Girls) and a micro-orchestra, and the video was shot in a single take (the 29th of the day) with “no cuts, dubbing, lip synching or auto-tuning.” I’m in love with the idea of a micro-orchestra, by the by. Via.

While I was checking out the youtube page for the above, I also ran across Ask A Grown Man with Jon Hamm, which I thought was too cute not to share.

Allow me to suggest some books by friends of mine out this month:

The first book in Laura Navarre‘s Tudor paranormal romance trilogy, Magick by Moonrise (which won the Pacific Northwest Writers Association Award for Romance in 2012), came out on March 11th. Rhiannon le Fay, a half-mortal/half-Fae princess, tries to make peace between the human and Faerie worlds before war ensues. Lord Beltran Nemestro hunts those who practice the dark arts, but when he meets Rhiannon he is torn between his attraction to her and his duty. Laura’s got the goods, folks–go read this.

Zachary Jernigan‘s debut novel, No Return, splashed onto the scene March 5th. James Patrick Kelly says of No Return, “Be careful picking this one up, because once you join with the adventurers in this strange and stunning debut novel, there will be no going back to the familiar precincts of heroic fantasy. Zachary Jernigan starts at the very edge of the map and plunges deep into uncharted territory. Mages in space, do-it-yourself gods, merciless killers in love and a mechanical warrior with a heart of bronze await your reading pleasure. For thinking readers who like swashbuckling with an edge, No Return delivers.” Are you still reading this? Shouldn’t you have bought the book?

On March 1st, Will Ludwigsen‘s second collection, In Search Of and Others, hit the shelves. This collection is top-notch, full of weirdness and strangeness and all kinds of perfects “-nesses.” All these stories hit me in just the right way. Last week, Will gave a reading at the College where I teach, and a lot of students told me later how much they enjoyed the stories (and Will). If college students are digging it, shouldn’t you?

♦ A Month of Letters.

In just a few days, February will close and the 2013 Month of Letters Challenge will end. I’ve been very good, mailing something every day the mail runs, even if I did not diversify my recipients as much as I perhaps should have. I even received a few letters, which was quite a delight. For the last two days of the month, I want to write letters rather than postcards, so wish me luck in scraping out some time to compose some proper missives!

Are you familiar with Mail Me Art? I remember reading about it a few years ago, but the third round (“Short and Sweet”) just started, as I read on Chet Phillips’ blog. Here’s a description from the MMA website:

Mail Me Art is a fun little project that was created by Darren Di Lieto of The Little Chimp Society in late 2006. He was looking for a way to connect on a real world level with all of the brilliant and talented illustrators who had become part of his community and network. Mail Art was the perfect way to accomplish this task. The Mail Me Art project has held exhibitions up and down the UK, and was published as very nice book by HOW Books. It has also been featured or mentioned by Digital Arts, Computer Arts, Design Week and The Telegraph over the years. Mail Me Art is still going strong to this day and there seems to be no stopping it!

Here are two fine examples by Garry Milne and Dan May (I particularly love the address on May’s envelope, which is on the right):

And here’s Chet Phillips’ piece for this round of the MMA:

If you like the idea of receiving story-letters in the post, you might be interested in Sylvia Linsteadt’s The Gray Fox Epistles project:

The Gray Fox Epistles is my story-via-letter project launched on Imbolc, February 2nd, 2013, in honor of all the newly stirring seeds, sap and milk of the wild world. Subscribers will receive one of my original tales every month, in their physical mailbox, printed, packaged and wax sealed beautifully and with scraps of woodland leaf or feather included. All stories will be at least 2,000 words in length, and previously unpublished.

They will all be retellings of deep old myths and fairytales, the kinds that have passed on through centuries, through many different wild landscapes. These retellings will be re-rooted in the wilds that I know– redwood forest, tule marsh, northern coastal scrub. They will be walks into the mythscapes & landscapes of the soul, and also very tangibly and vividly rooted in the wild cycles that I am always learning here, on the edge of the central coast of California, a state named for the legendary Amazon queen Calafia and her island of wild women and gold.

It is up to you to root these tales in your own heart and place. They have paws. They leave trails. Go, take them outside with you, see where they will lead you.

As you may remember, my friend Will Ludwigsen has a short-story collection, In Search Of and Others, coming out next month. You can read one of the stories, “Remembrance Is Something Like a House,” over at Weird Fiction Review. I love this story for a number of reasons, one being that this is the very first Will Ludwigsen story I ever read–he submitted it for the first workshop we shared together at Stonecoast, and I thought it was pretty much perfect then. To add to that, my friend Adam Mills interviewed Will for WFR, which you should also check out, and another friend, Zachary Jernigan, interviewed Will in 7 questions. And over at his own blog, Will wrote about ghosts, his “favorite paranormal phenomenon.”

Also over at WFR, Desirina Bokovich profiled another one of my favorite writers, Caitlín R. Kiernan, over there.

My friend Paul Kirsch gives great review to Zachary Jernigan‘s impending debut novel, No Return. Why haven’t you bought your copy already?

I had a good laugh at this Wondermark cartoon by David Malki !

Warren Ellis has started “a daily single-panel strip” on his website with Jason Howard titled Scatterlands, “A largely improvised comic strip that will run here Mondays to Fridays, one panel a day…. Just a bit of fun, as they say.” And it has been fun!
I remember the first appearances of both the first heroic Doctor Light (Kimiyo Hoshi) and the second Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau) in the 1980s, so this mash-up from Super-Team Family was a real delight for me:

And I couldn’t resist sharing another of Super-Team Family’s mash-ups: Zatanna and Doctor Strange (Zatanna being one of top five favorite DC magicians and Doctor Strange being, of course, Doctor Strange):

♦ A Brief Blog Vacation.

The blog will be quiet for the next couple weeks: I’ll be in Paris and won’t be able to scour the interwebs for interesting tidbits. Yes, I know, a trip to Paris, woe is me. Take care of yourselves while I’m away.

Here’s a real treat for those of you who like David Lynch and lithography (doesn’t everyone?): Lynch’s new short film, Idem Paris, about the fine-art printing studio of the same name in Montparnasse, Paris. Here’s Lynch’s introduction to his documentary (from the Idem Paris website):

Hervé Chandès from the Fondation Cartier brought me over to Idem and introduced me to Patrice Forest. I see this incredible place, and I get the opportunity to work there. And this was like a dream! It just opened up this brand-new world of the lithography and the magic of lithography, the magic of the stones. And it was a great, great thing! This thing of lithography, this channel of lithography opened up and a bunch of ideas came flowing out and it led to about a hundred lithographs. I will say that Idem printing studio has a unique, very special mood, and it is so conducive to creating. Patrice has the greatest attitude for all the artists and he creates this space of freedom and this joy of creating. It’s so beautiful! And I think the place is very important—in other words, the same stone could be moved to another place, and I think that the work that comes out would be different. It’s a combination of the stone, the place, the people, this mood, and out comes these certain ideas.
