Hy-Vee, the big local grocery chain, had their annual fishing derby today. I took the 2 older grandsons, the youngest stayed with grandma. We got there at 8 and there was already a big crowd. The kids get free worms and some of the fish are tagged. A tagged fish gets a prize. They were having foot races for the kids by age and all kinds of other things going on. We went to fish. Between the 3 of us we caught 23 bullheads. That's a lot of fish cleaning. I already know they are going to be tasty tonight.

Research done by the Justice Department and the Pew Center both show that gun crime is falling and has been since the 90's. Has anyone heard anything in the media? I haven't. To hear the media tell it, we are killing each other at rates that are off the charts. Other than the rare mass killings, violent crime is down. Not just murders, but even crimes where a gun is used to scare and intimidate. Yet gun sales have been setting records for years. Maybe more guns does equal less crime.

A very interesting article appeared in the Iowa State Daily. It's a bit long, but well worth the read. It pretty well explains why we will never trust the gun haters.

I’ve come to realize after the Sandy Hook shooting that the reason we can’t have a rational gun debate is because the anti-gun side pre-supposes that their pro-gun opponents must first accept that guns are bad in order to have a discussion about guns in the first place. Before we even start the conversation, we’re the bad guys and we have to admit it. Without accepting that guns are bad and supplicating themselves to the anti-gunner, the pro-gunner can’t get a word in edgewise, and is quickly reduced to being called a murderer, or a low, immoral and horrible human being.You might think that’s hyperbole too, but I’ve experienced it personally from people I considered friends until recently. And every day I see it on TV or in the newspapers, from Piers Morgan to the Des Moines Register’s own Donald Kaul, who among others have actually said people like me are stupid, crazy or should be killed ourselves. YouTube is full of examples, and any Google search will result in example after example of gun-owning Americans being lampooned,ridiculed and demonized by the media and citizens somewhere.

Wow, now a statist asshat in Colorado has decided that me and nearly 5 million other NRA members should be rounded up and sent to a concentration camp. A good dose of Godwin's law can be applied here. Seems like there were some other people rounded up, oh yeah, 13 million Jew, Gypsies and other "undesirables". And that was just one Country. There has been over 100 million people rounded up and murdered by their own government in the 20th Century. Roll out the boxcars and get the "showers" ready.

The Aurora Sentinel actually printed this crap as a editorial. Of course Colorado just pass some very strict gun control laws, even though the people came out against it in vast numbers.

In the summer of 73, as a 17 year old kid, I took a oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. I don't recall there being a expiration date on that oath. It also covers all of the Bill of Rights, not just the ones that this statist asshat* chooses. And even though I don't agree with what he has said, he does have the right to spew his hatred.

This fool* should check his recent history. That hero of the Democrat party Bill "blowjob" Clinton changed the rules of engagement back during Kosovo. Allowing the taking out of the press. They promptly sent Tomahawk missiles into TV and newspaper building to silence them. Start your collectivist crap, it's open season on members of the media according to Clinton.

I have seen this a couple of times. It gets the same reaction every time I read it. Semper Fi.

A nurse took the tired, anxious serviceman to the bedside. “Your son is here,” she said to the old man. She had to repeat the words several times before the patient’s eyes opened.

Heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack, he... dimly saw the young uniformed Marine standing outside the oxygen tent. He reached out his hand. The Marine wrapped his toughened fingers around the old man’s limp ones, squeezing a message of love and encouragement.

The nurse brought a chair so that the Marine could sit beside the bed. All through the night the young Marine sat there in the poorly lighted ward, holding the old man’s hand and offering him words of love and strength. Occasionally, the nurse suggested that the Marine move away and rest awhile. He refused.

Whenever the nurse came into the ward, the Marine was oblivious of her and of the night noises of the hospital - the clanking of the oxygen tank, the laughter of the night staff members exchanging greetings, the cries and moans of the other patients. Now and then she heard him say a few gentle words. The dying man said nothing, only held tightly to his son all through the night.

Along towards dawn, the old man died. The Marine released the now lifeless hand he had been holding and went to tell the nurse. While she did what she had to do, he waited.

Finally, she returned. She started to offer words of sympathy, but the Marine interrupted her, “Who was that man?” he asked.

The nurse was startled, “He was your father,” she answered.

“No, he wasn't,” the Marine replied. “I never saw him before in my life.”

“Then why didn't you say something when I took you to him?”

“I knew right away there had been a mistake, but I also knew he needed his son, and his son just wasn't here. When I realized that he was too sick to tell whether or not I was his son, knowing how much he needed me, I stayed. I came here tonight to find a Mr. William Grey. His Son was killed in Iraq today, and I was sent to inform him. What was this Gentleman’s Name? “

The nurse with tears in her eyes answered, “Mr. William Grey………”

In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday the country’s interpretation of the Constitution will “have to change” to allow for greater security to stave off future attacks.

“The people who are worried about privacy have a legitimate worry,” Mr. Bloomberg said during a press conference in Midtown. “But we live in a complex world where you’re going to have to have a level of security greater than you did back in the olden days, if you will. And our laws and our interpretation of the Constitution, I think, have to change.”

Where does this rich asshole get the idea that we need to change the Constitution so we can be safer? The FBI knew about the older of the 2 mad bombers*. He was even investigated for domestic violence. Yet according to Bloomberg, We need to give up our Constitutional rights.

We can't all have taxpayer funded security following us around 24 hours a day. The police, no matter the good job they try to do to prevent crime, are not obligated to protect anyone. The SCOTUS has made that point several times (Warren v. DC, Gonzales v. Castle Rock are two examples). The people responsible for your safety is YOU. The police are reactionary, they aren't going to be standing there at 2 in the morning when some thug is kicking your door in. Calling 911 is fine, get them on the phone and keep the line open. But if that thug does get in, what are you prepared to do. Between the first noise and the arrival of the PD, you need to be prepared to repel boarders.

I don't understand the mindset of these "elite" assholes that think taking away the rights of the people is going to do anything. Are they really that obsessed with power? Hell, he has his own island, he can go there and be King. He can also leave me the hell alone.

*I do not publish the names of these miscreants. The press gives them the publicity they seek.
