Bio

Robin Clare was born in Belize, in 1978. She studied at the Capilano College in British Columbia where she attained a Diploma in Studio Arts (2000). She also attended the University of the Arts in London where she attained a BA in Fine Arts (2004). She has participated in numerous group exhibitions including the Art in Dancehall exhibition (2012) which toured locations in Los Angeles and New York in the USA, as well as Birmingham and London in the UK, during the London Olympics. Her solo exhibitions include Badda Dan Dem Star (2012) and Yard Illuminations (2016), both held in Sydney, Australia. She has received much acclaim for her work and attained several awards and honours including being shortlisted for the Yen Female Art award in Australia (2013). She lives and works in Sydney, Australia.

About the Work

“Sleng Teng: This animation is a tribute to Sleng Teng, the first fully computerised riddim, created through collaboration between Wayne Smith and Prince Jammy. Smith’s version was Under Mi Sleng Teng. It became one of the most versioned riddims in Jamaican music history. A few notable versions include Tenor Saw’s Pumpkin Belly, Anthony Red Rose’s Under Mi Fat Thing and Johnny Osbourne’s Buddy Bye.“

“Log On: This is a piece I created in response to the recent hit Hotline Bling by Drake. In the music video for the song, singer Drake and Canadian/Jamaican choreographer Tanish Scott recreated a version of the dancehall move Log On, inspired by a scene in the Sean Paul music video for Gimmi di Light which also featured Scott.”

I'm proud to announce that I'll be taking part in upcoming Digital exhibition at the National Gallery of Jamaica. Digital media has arguably been the fastest growing field in contemporary visual art and an area of major innovation and experimentation. The Caribbean has been no exception and many younger artists are engaging and exploring new media such as animation, GIFs, video installations, digital illustration, computer graphics and web based art. Digital celebrates digital art forms in all digital media produced by artists based in the Caribbean and its diaspora and also encourages the development and recognition of such media in the Caribbean.

Join us next month for our month-long ‘Children of the Gap: Conversations on Cultural Duality’ series in collaboration with Citizins.

Kicking things off a few days before the exhibition launch (which will include a performance by writer/poetGREEdS and live painting by Citizins) join us on Tuesday, 22nd March for a Twitter discussion hosted by social impact platform #CultureFix where we’ll be delving further into the theme of cultural duality and creativity.

Throughout April we’ll also be hosting film screenings including British Ghanaians: Lost In Translation and the iconic ‘Pressure’ by Trinidadian-born filmmaker Horace Ové at Maida Hill Place.

We’re inviting you along to join us as we learn about the multiplicity of ways in which a new generation of creatives are bringing the gap between their experience of being born or raised in the West whilst also being part of a more distant, but no less rich cultural heritage.

Don’t forget to follow us on social media where we’ll be highlighting our featured artists and sharing our own ‘tales from the gap.’

For my most recent exhibition I was invited by Story Yard to collaborate on a Vivid Sydney event. I created a body of work transforming my dancing figures into 3-d wall based pieces using Electro Luminescent Wire. Below are a few images of the process and finished pieces.

I started by making a wire maquette with latex coated wire. Then i attached the EL Wire using fishing line.

I really enjoyed the shadows that the two different types of wire cast on the walls during daylight before taking on their neon glow at night.

My latest painting So She Like It. Inspired by Spice who is redefining the male dominated Dancehall landscape with her wicked tunes and messages of female empowerment. Loving her new album!

When I paint I usually have my idea mocked up already, it's just a matter of blocking it out in larger format. Once that's done I can change elements around add bits and pieces or take them away. Then when I start to paint I can play with the colors that I think work best and they can change as the painting takes shape.

Introducing DHQ Style, a series of posters designed by artist Robin Clare to celebrate the 2015 Dancehall Queen Competition season.

Dancehall Queen (DHQ) Style is comprised of iconic sexy moves requiring incredible flexibility and confidence. The moves are specifically female dance moves that best highlight the areas of the body most prized by Jamaican audiences with a whole heap of bumpa jiggling and waist wineing.

During the competition each DHQ brings her own unique interpretation to the basics expanding on and embellishing them. With her unique combination of athleticism, imagination and physical style a DHQ will make her name on the stage and dance floor.

The season concludes each year with the International competition held in Montego Bay, Jamaica attracting contestants from across the globe representing anywhere up to 30 countries.

The series features 10 essential moves in the Dancehall Queen repertoire. Produced as limited edition posters printed in an A1 format on tyvek, chosen for it's durability and versatility. Print runs are limited to 50 copies of each design and are signed and numbered on the back.

A multi-media event featuring all new artwork by me from the upcoming book The Art of Dancehall by Jamaican dancer, choreographer and dancehall specialist Latonya Style.
