The Flush

It’s quite interesting to see how so many people don’t know how their toilet works. The great thing is that the concept of it is quite simple actually! A toilet has no electrical components, and rather uses a series of levers, pipes, water and gravity to power the system. When you pull the lever or push the button on your toilet to flush it, a plug will open inside the cistern (the big tank part of the toilet). The void that this creates will allow water to flow into the bowl.

The ‘S’ Bend

One of the main components of most modern toilet systems is the simple yet effective ‘S’ bend of the pipe. Once the toilet is flushed, the water and waste leaves through a drainpipe at the bottom of the bowl. This water then goes up and over an ‘S’ Bend in the pipe, before dropping off into the rest of the air-filled plumbing systems. This combination of moving water and air created by the ‘S’ Bend serves multiple purposes – it firstly creates a suction effect to take away all of the waste, and secondly it creates a barrier to stop foul smells from escaping the main drainpipe.

Backflow prevention devices must be inspected on an annual basis. This is a pre-required condition set out by the State Government legistlation that allows your property to be connected to the water supply.
