“After several hours of fixing/adding detail, it’s done. Honestly, I’m glad that they never made a Mega Man for Virtual Boy, because I’d probably play it all day when I first got it, not only wasting batteries, but also destroying my eyesight.” —Pixel Joint user MrWeirdGuy.

“As a technology-based medium, game heroes and villains cannot remain the same. They must constantly evolve, or risk looking “last gen.” That doesn’t mean the new or old designs take precedence, it just means no developer will ever, ever leave its creation alone. Now, with decades of console history to pull from, let’s take a look at the “old” designs and see how they stack up against their modern equivalents.”

A look back at the five games available for the Gameboy's U.S. launch.

“According to the Nintendo list there was somewhere in the neighborhood of 650 (official) games released for the original gray brick in the US. It’s hard to imagine now, but there was a time when there were only five Game Boy titles to choose from. That’s right, at the Game Boy’s launch we ecstatic pocket gamers had very little choice. Of course it wouldn’t be long before every major publisher began carrying over their popular franchises. But for a brief holiday season, these were the five games in every Game Boy owners’ collections.”

“Dang this level is hard, you have to dodge the intermittent bursts from the bp pipeline and try to cap the main pipe with different things like mushrooms or coins before you run out of oxygen. So far no one has been able to beat it and if you die enough times the government finally steps in to help. – Das Chupa!”

An interview with Mike Dietz, animator on Earthworm Jim, Global Gladiators, Cool Spot, and Aladdin.

“We were literally making Earthworm Jim up as we went along, so we had complete freedom. If it was funny, or cool, or worked well for gameplay, it went in the game. Most of the creative decisions concerning the character had their genesis with Doug and the animation group, even if it was a simple sketch of Jim whipping his head or something like that. It took the entire group’s effort to get anything working in the game, and so everyone had to be on the same page.”

From the BBC:

The Cassini spacecraft in orbit around Saturn has caught an interesting new view of the tiny moon Mimas.

The probe measured temperature differences across the object’s surface and produced a map that looks just like the 1980s Pac-Man video games icon.

Scientists are unsure why Mimas should display such variations but say it is probably related to the diversity of textures in the surface materials.
