Grandparents: The Shiny Jewels of Childhood

I grew up with my grandparents ten minutes away. They were, without a doubt, the shiny stars of my childhood. When we were younger my brother and I spent every Friday night with them. Our evening would begin early with a pick up from school. I can still remember the thrill of racing out of the building on a glorious Friday afternoon, my back pack banging against my body, as I spied their big orange Mercury parked in the gravel lot waiting for me. No riding the bus with the sticky Naugahyde seats for me that day, no way. I would yank open the car door, whip my bag in, and slide onto the backseat as big as a couch.

Slamming the door closed my Grandpa would turn around with a grin already in place. Looking at me with sparkling eyes over the bench seat he’d yell “Well, whaddya know for sure?” His standard greeting, I would grin back and say “Not much Grandpa!” And we would be off to get an ice cream cone at the Dairy Queen, which would inevitably turn into board games for hours back at their house.

Many nights after dinner we would strap on our roller skates and “tear around” in the basement while Grandpa worked at his desk balancing the town’s treasury books.

Once I took a particularly bad spill on my tail bone and thought I broke my butt. Yelling out poor Grandpa ran over to find me gulping air and squirming around on the ground. He ended up applying pressure to my butt cheek and assuring me for a good 20 minutes that I had indeed not broken my butt.

We ate Sunday dinners together, they bought me my track shoes freshman year when Mom couldn’t afford them, came to see our school concerts, shook hands with our teachers, collected our pictures in their wallets, and always wanted to watch Night Rider on Friday night. Well, Grandpa did. Grandma would make us snacks and then retire to the other room to watch the Love Boat. She loved Captain Stubing.

I’ve been thinking a lot about them lately. So much so I pulled down a box of pictures from the top shelf of my closet and found several that transported me to the 80s.

It’s 1984. June. Grandpa has on his daily uniform. He likely has sawdust caught in his arm hair with the smell of fresh cut grass trailing behind him. Grandma has on a pair of her ubiquitous orthopedic SAS shoes and a white top she absentmindedly smoothed down all day. She’s holding my arm in a way I’ve always remembered and can still feel on my skin.

I have on my swimsuit which means the sprinkler is on in the backyard, spraying to and fro, waiting for me to come back. There’s likely blades of grass still stuck to my feet. My pink seated bike is thrown down on the driveway. They bought it for me. Of course they did. We walked into the store and later I rode it out the front door. On any given summer day I’d pedal furiously around the block, careen into the driveway, and go straight to Grandma and ask her to make me a sandwich. I would tell her I was starving. I meant it.

For a decade of my childhood I began 90% of my sentences with “Grandpa, can I ——-.” Or “Grandma will you …?”

Grandpa always answered yes and Grandma always would, no matter what the request.

This picture, capturing them in their norm, is especially dear to me and sits on my nightstand. I look at it every night as I take off my wedding band before I go to sleep.

White Panty Hose and a Matching Leatherette Belt — The Ultimate in 90s Chic

It’s a week night in May in the early 90’s. You’re wearing your 8th grade graduation outfit even though the ceremony isn’t until later in the month. You have carefully curled your hair. You’re sporting white panty hose and feel chic and worldly in your matching leatherette belt.

You’re holding a copy of your essay “The Voice of Democracy” after having just read it aloud to a room full of veterans from The American Legion. You’re sweaty. Mostly because it’s hot.

You smile for the photo knowing your older brother dashed off the essay in 20 minutes because you couldn’t bear to write another English assignment that year. But you’re the one that taped yourself reading it aloud. You turned the whole thing in and didn’t think anything would come of it.

Your Mom was mortified when it won 3rd place and even more so when you’re all invited to a dinner and ceremony at the Community Building in town.

Years later you’ll look at this and feel a nostalgic affection. You’ll remember the distinct scent of old men’s aftershave – Brut – commingling with that of the fresh paint on the benches of the Community Building.

You’ll remember the novelty of going out as a family of three on a weeknight and celebrating an accomplishment. You think of it as a joint effort. Your brother writing it, you recording and reading it aloud, and your Mom pretending to be scandalized by the whole thing. You didn’t even mind splitting the $25 prize with him. But you pretended like you did.

Under New Management

I’ve been thinking about this phrase: Under New Management.

It’s most often used when there’s a business, say a sandwich shop in town, that has changed hands and the new owners want to make damn sure everybody knows it’s not business as usual. That the soggy sammies you once knew are no longer because they’re now managing the heck out of that shop.

“Hey Joe Q. Public! Come back in and try our BLT because we’re going to blow your hypothetical socks off. We have a new local bacon source AND we only slice up thick and juicy tomatoes on demand. No slimy tomatoes sitting around in here. Nope.”

Instructive. I want to know if something that appears the same is actually fundamentally different.

Then I was thinking about extending this to ourselves. What if we’ve been fundamentally changed? Our priorities are different and now what we care about don’t reflect where we were or what we care about? We don’t have a sign to post outside for passerby’s to see.

We could make more of a declaration. What would it be? Something as simple as “Hey! I’ve changed.” While this method makes it clear, yes, it lacks finesse — it feels cheap and low budget. If you have to tell someone you’ve changed…well…save it, I think.

I think it’s better to just do your own new management thing. Care about the new things important to you. The equivalent to the new local bacon source and slicing thick juicy tomatoes on demand. Move your attention away from the things you’re no longer about.

Shed them like a lizard walking right out of that skin that’s too tight and small on the ground to wilt. Leave it there for someone else to find. It may be their next new step they want to slip into a bit.

For a lot of us (and this applies to myself as well) we feel like we NEED approval to change priorities, jobs, careers, hobbies, interests, directions, underwear. Not underwear. I got carried away.

There’s no big approval stamp in the sky we call to allow us to move on. It’s all ok to be someone unrecognizable from yourself a year ago. Six months ago or even 30 days ago. I KNOW you know this. I do. It’s also nice to hear it, isn’t it?

To be reminded. I’m writing this down for both of us, you and me. Maybe this strikes you at a time and in a way fundamental to where you currently are and it feels like a vacation to put down those old cares. The ones that have been dragging and keeping you down. Perfect.

So one more time for those of you in the back (and me): It’s your right to be under new management any damn time you please.

Stepping Out of the Fog

My Dad and Stepmom, Laurel, came to visit a couple of weeks ago and we took them up and down the coast with a healthy dose of Dry Creek Valley (wine, of course) thrown in. We started from the Peninsula in Palo Alto and headed up north of San Francisco.

Sunny down by us, fogged in and gloomy in the city, and then as we drove north of the city it magically burned off and left us with flawless blue skies again. This shot at the top of the post is taken from Tiburon, just northeast of the city. Past the sailboat you can see the Golden Gate bridge in the distance and then the rest of the city is fogged in.

When you’re in the fog, in SF, it doesn’t register that just a couple of miles south and north of where you’re standing are clear skies and a whole different experience than the one you’re having. You don’t really think about it. You accept it and don’t stop to consider. At least, I don’t.

I’ve been thinking about this for the last week. About the fog and how else it applies to life. Yours and mine.

I asked myself: how many times have I been stuck in my head? With a virtual thick soupy fog filling my thoughts? When I’m in them, I’m there. I don’t usually stop to consider that a clear head could be mine if I just looked a bit outside myself. The choice is ours just as it is to drive a few minutes outside of the city and look up at the clear sky.

For example, if you would have been standing in the chip aisle of the Menlo Park Trader Joes yesterday you would have seen me in the midst of battling my fog. I was feeling down, knowing I was missing out on the birthday party of a dear friend going on half a world away with people I adore, in my favorite city. My thoughts swirled as I slipped my sunglasses letting a few tears fall, feeling sorry for myself. My cheeks wet with tears as the blue organic corn chips stared back at me from the bottom shelf. The more forlorn I felt the more I sniffled and snuffled.

I let myself have those tears. A small little gift to me from me.

Then I remembered I’m in charge of the fog. I’m the boss, applesauce. I rolled my shoulders back and lifted my chin. I took off my sunglasses, dried my cheeks, and asked myself what I wanted to do with my day. Biscotti I decided, I want to make pistachio and cherry biscotti. So I did. I started with a clean kitchen. I weighed and measured. I worked the dough (but not too much) while I listened to a favorite list on Spotify.

The breeze blew through the open windows and the smell of cookies filled the air blowing my fog away for good. I smiled at the pictures rolling in from my friends, happy they were all together celebrating and knowing I would be doing the same with them next time I see them.

I thanked myself for blowing away the fog. For loving my day right where I was.

We always have a choice. I’m grateful for the one I made yesterday and plan on doing the same next time. It’s ok to be sad. Squeeze a few tears out, wallow for a bit, it feels good! Be there for as long as you need to. Phone a friend and sit down in the chip aisle if you need to. But remember you can step out of the fog. It has an end and it’s your choice.

Just step a bit to the left and find the edge. Your day will be a hell of a lot better if you do. And what is life but a collection of well lived days?

Making the Case for Being Happy, Now.

Driving home from the Fourth of July weekend in Northern California we stopped by a fruit stand and bought a flat of peaches. The yellow ones, not too fuzzy and bursting with juice that slid down my chin while I closed my eyes and conjured my childhood. In my mind’s eye, my grandfather stood in front of me holding his worn paring knife, juice dripping from his fingers, holding out the next piece for me. Just as he did so many summers in a row.

My Mom is the pie baker.

And an excellent one at that. Lemon meringue, chocolate cream, pumpkin, cherry, sometimes an apple would make an appearance. A pie on the counter was a common occurrence in our house and in my grandmother’s as well. Having never made a pie myself I decided these fuzzy gems were going to be my maiden voyage.

It took me all afternoon and I did my share of cajoling and sometimes begging the crust to hold together. It cracked in places it wasn’t supposed to and I ended up mashing the butter by hand. In the end I made what I call a frankencrust. Stitched together at the bottom of the pan and passing muster with a bit of a squeak.

I ate more than my fair share of peaches while I was peeling and cutting. The brown sugar I sprinkled over the bowl adding to my nostalgia while I prayed to the Crust Gods to not forsake me now. Baking is a meditation. When I want to do it, I’m submerged— using the time to lose myself in the simple motions. Not thinking too far ahead. The next item on my to-do list banished from the kitchen while I cut, sprinkle, knead and work the crust (but not too much!).

Here’s What It Looked Like —

As I reach into the bag of flour and sprinkle it on the counter I tell the repetitive thoughts I’m not doing enough in my life to sit.down.
As the rolling pin glides over the dough I cut the chord to worrying about the state of my country I love so much.
I stir the peaches and watch the juice come back together and tell my pants that I wish were looser to shut up — can’t they see I’m in the middle of baking mastery?
I press the button to pre-heat the oven and push all the reasons that I can’t be happy now, out of the kitchen.

If we want to worry, we’ll find a reason.

Plenty of them. There’s always something to fret about. It’s like finding a loose thread on your favorite shirt. If you tug and pull on it, it’s going to come apart. But if you just leave it be, wear it out of the house and appreciate the shit out of it, it’s going to deliver for you.

There’s nothing. Not one thing preventing you from being happy now.

Baking on a Monday afternoon and being in the moment. Watching the trees wave in the wind from your living room window. Laying your cheek on a cool pillow and not letting your thoughts run wild to the time you had a fight on the playground when you were 8. Forget all that and shut the noise down.

The Rise of the Aperitivo: Taking A Page from the Italian Playbook

There’s a reason Americans have a fluttery weak spot for all things Italian — Our well-shod, chic crushes always seem to get it right. From fashion to elegance, design to casual coolness, the American love affair with Italy is well deserved and refreshingly neverending. The latest trend of Italian emulation is the rise of the aperitivo — a nosh of this and a drop of that all served up in fancy glassware.

Roughly translated as “opener” or “to open” it refers to sipping on a drink as an appetizer or a pre-dinner ritual. Add in some snacks (everyone loves a snack), and wah-lah. Rather than ponying up for the standard happy hour with deep fried cheese sticks and two-for-one-doubles, Americans are foregoing the heavy booze and snacks for the lighter and more healthy aperitivo.

Millennials are especially on board with that light booze life. Gone are the days of embarrassingly whispering to the bartender that you’ll have the Rosa-Rita Mocktail, please. Now, booze free and low-ABV aperitifs are the it beverages of the summer.

Back in its homeland, the aperitivo is traditionally served an hour or so before Nonna slides the first dinner course onto the table. Someone pours the group a spritz or pops open a bottle of prosecco while the ubiquitous small bowls of salty snacks hit the table. Think: potato chips, olives, and likely some nuts.

Here in America we’re taking the long held Italian tradition and putting our red, white, and blue twist on it. Cue up the band and hold onto your happy hour hats, here are a few things you’ll want to consider serving up at your next aperitivo gathering.

Go Back To Your Why

Starting something is fun. Isn’t it? The rush of adrenaline when you’re daydreaming about the outcome, how you’re going to to do it this time! You’re going to! I’m going to! All of us, we’re there! The fresh motivation and wide-eyed enthusiasm building up at your feet causing them to feel like they’re on fire marching straight toward the new you.

This is the sweet spot. Beginnings! A clean notebook with a binding waiting to be cracked, a new school year, the first entry, a Monday. The sweet accomplishments of beginnings. When it all feels so fresh and doable. You’re happy and resolute. You’re gung ho! Ahhh the early days.

And you sit down and diligently work toward your goal. Day 2…you’re there! Whewww Day 3 you’re chugging along, and holding steady.

Stay with me now…Let’s say it’s day 9 and your schedule gets thrown off. You manage to pull it out by the end of the day, but man it felt like a pain rather than the bright eyed awesomeness you were coasting along with.

It’s Day 10 now and you spend 5 minutes less than your target time you painstakingly wrote down on your calendar when planning it all out. But that’s alright! You tell yourself, because tomorrow I’m going to get back at it. And then day 11 rolls around and maybe you actually do make up the time, but your hearts not in it. You’re distracted, thinking about picking up your phone. Craving the hit of don’t worry about it that rushes in when the notifications stack up, soothing you, allowing you to forget (temporarily) you’re letting yourself down.

You begin to feel the permission of letting yourself slide.

You tell yourself, maybe it wasn’t what I wanted anyway. Yeah, that’s it. The conversation progresses to full on chatter inside your head assuring you it was unattainable and not really a thing you wanted to be doing anyway. By the time the discussion (party of one) is over, it’s day 15 and you’re absolutely sure it wasn’t a thing. Followed by why don’t I pick up my phone and watch this Upworthy video to make myself feel better and definitely, absolutely let’s not think again about what had me so fired up less than 2 weeks ago.

My stomach feels sick thinking about it. I’ve done this. Oh man how I have done this. For a variety of goals, but specifically I’ve done it several times for the goal I’m now 20 days into. A goal that I NEVER (again) want to give myself permission to let slide.

I’m learning Italian

Cue the band and bring out the pasta. I kid. But I’m not. Because when I think of smooth Italian falling out of my mouth, this is what I think of.

But this post isn’t about me. This is about you. (And me) and we, and us. Because we all have done this, fallen down on something we really, really want to be doing in our lives and let ourselves off the hook from actually working on it.

Let’s use me and my Italian as an example to understand how this time is much, much different and how it can be next time for you as well.

Ready? Here’s the reason:

I’ve gotten very clear on the Why.

Whyyyyyyyyy. My Why. Why Am I doing this? Why am I pulling up a chair and spending at least one hour per day ingesting Italian?

Half of my family is full on Italian. Not Italian-American. I’m talking let’s-battle-it-out at-the-table-and-then-we’re-all-going-to-eat-the-best-pasta-you-have-ever-wrapped your-lips-around, kind of Italian. And when I’m sitting at that table I want to be able to get right in there and throw elbows, just like everyone else.
My husband is Italian and I so look forward to having a relationship with him in his language as well.
Italy, the Italian people, and every single piece of that iconic boot has always been a big part of my life. I tell my husband all the time, it’s not the love I have for you that makes me love Italy, but it’s the love I have for Italy that brought me to you in the first place. I know in my bones that I will be spending more and more time there over the years. I want to make the most of it. Knowing the language is like being granted secret access.

Those are big whys. Huge. When I sit down to concentrate I’m crystal clear on why I’m allocating my most precious commodity (time) to achieving it. When I don’t want to, or I want to quit early, or I feel like I’m not getting anywhere I go back to my why.

I think about how awesome it feels to understand a new passage of conversation. Or to read a post on Facebook in Italian and not only understand it, but also get the humor behind it. I think about when the family comes in December and how much learning (and speaking) I’m going to have under my belt. #thewhy

Here’s my question for you:

What have you started and stopped and started again, abandoned and dearly want to be working on? You know what it is. It’s needling you. You want to go back. BUT, first I suggest you take out your notebook and get really clear on your why. Scribble it down and hold onto it for dear life. You’re going to need it.

Before you put a plan in place or get all excited and start working fresh on it, put that Why into place. So when you want to rip your face off because it’s Day 42 and it feels like fresh hell you know WHY.

Your why. Because it’s important to hold ourselves accountable. The very last person you want to have a bad reputation with is you. Whewwwww when that happens, it takes a bit to come back from it. The permission to slide starts comes earlier and often. The whispers of it’s ok, you didn’t want that anyway are on repeat.

Find.Your.Why and then get that shiny plan into place and hold on for dear life. You’re about to amaze yourself.

A Masterclass in Effectiveness

I used to have all the reasons about why I couldn’t do things. I don’t have the network, I don’t have the money. I don’t think it’s the right time — that was a big one. I wasn’t lying, I was fully convinced of the reasons.

And if asked, I would tell you all about it too. But that wasn’t it. Sure, maybe I didn’t have the resources to leave my job and go live in Europe, on paper. But I also know that if I would have made it a priority I could have made it happen.

It did, ultimately. First I was fired, removing the biggest block — the one in my head. Then I leveraged what I did have to move and travel sustainably. Without dipping into savings and without putting a balance on my credit card.

It’s just like Amelia says, the best way to do it, is to do it.

The key is the remembering that you don’t need to be up against the proverbial wall to get things done. They’re always there for the taking.

Like you, I’m always moving through phases of life with new projects, goals, and accomplishments on my mind. I was reminding by the simplicity of the most effective way to get something done when I scrolled past her quote on Instagram last week and I’m sharing it all with you.

For whoever needs to see this today: Take a step today. See how it feels. Likely, fricking fabulous. And then take another tomorrow, maybe two. The joy in your progress is a powerful motivator toward the next step on your way.

Focus on Building the New

I think of the old as a husk, dry and brittle. Used up and mostly shucked from my body. Barely hanging on and ready to blow away when the breeze kicks up.
