I've been working pretty flat out on one particular web project recently. The timeline is short, the thinking is all-consuming, the deadline is tight and the workload is mammoth: in short, the perfect recipe for mental, if not physical, burnout.

In theory, I should be blitzing through it this weekend. But, after a week a sleep deprivation and tunnel vision, I made the very conscious decision to do nothing.

Well, not nothing, exactly.

I had two nights of dreamless fourteen hour sleeps. I cancelled other work plans this weekend and took myself off to the V & A, where I spent an afternoon circling the Rodin collection.

I read Vogue and Dazed & Confused at Starbucks and the third part of Stieg Larsson's trilogy in the bath. I watched the DVD extras from Love, Actually and Fletcher's second season all over again.

I took my mother out to dinner and had lunch with both my brothers. I cooked soup and practiced scrambling eggs (I think I'm getting better). I went to the gym (twice), went swimming (twice) and signed up for Gyrotonic sessions.

It's practically the end of the weekend and I haven't once put pencil to paper or opened my laptop (I'm on my phone).

A.R. Rahman once wrote, 'Sometimes standing still can be the best move you ever make.' And words to that effect have often been said to me by people more organised, more productive and more focused than I will ever be.

There's something in that. I absolutely cannot wait to tackle that website again tomorrow.

I don't usually post my goals for the year online - I'm not that brave - but instead I write them in the back of the Muji diary that I buy every year. I didn't keep any of my resolutions but one, and that one I did fairly spectacularly.

I posted my year in photos earlier, but here's how I'm going to remember 2011:

Shifting teams: This time last year one of my aims was to 'do more work with beautiful world'. I did one better: I left my old job and joined the beautiful world team. Six months in, I'm still riding a very steep but enjoyable learning curve and we're doing some pretty great work. But I'm still in the PayPoint.net groove though - I'm their retained designer and I'm very excited for the projects that we'll be working on together this year.

Suitcase living: When I joined beautiful world, I expected my freelance schedule to die down, but it went completely the opposite direction. So I'm blessed to continue enjoying a fairly full freelance schedule, but as my client base is around the world, this often means hightailing it to the airport on Thursday evening to spend Friday and the weekend meeting with my clients and collaborators. This year I've averaged two overnight trips out of London every month, most of which involved getting on a plane or a Eurostar, and I've eaten more room service club sandwiches than I care to remember.

Finding out that the NHS is actually quite good: I had to have a minor operation in August, by which time I'd left my old job and the private health insurance that went with it. From all the scans and tests through operation and recovery, I found all of the NHS staff amazing. Yes, their admin system could do with greater efficiencies and their buildings need a facelift, but you don't really get to test the system until you have to go through it yourself, and I did just fine.

Going with the flow: Because of all of the above, 2011 was anything but the year that I had planned. But what I did learn was that I'm in good shape to adapt and not feel bad about it.

So, for the first time, here's what I want to do in 2012:

Take an actual holiday: The last one I did was about this time last year when my brothers and I went skiing in Vancouver. We took the laptops but didn't do any work. I haven't had a holiday all year this year, so next year I'm going for a diving holiday.

Celebrate Fletcher 3: Regan and the team in Toronto have been doing an amazing job in production, so I'm gearing up to play my part in making our final season the best ever.

Manifest our next web series: most web series producers come in pairs, and my other half is Regan Latimer. Post Fletcher, I'm looking forward to our next show together.

Take better pictures: I see most of my world in a frame, whether it's a placeholder in a wireframe, a campaign mock-up or something I've taken for reference on my phone. This year, I want to get better at taking pictures and seeing whether photography might be a hobby I want to take up.

Launch at least one of my blog projects: Throughout 2011, I've diligently been working on content for one of the three blog projects I've been developing. At least one will launch by Q2 this year.

Practice my commercial experience: I'd like to do this on one of my own projects, so a new viable online business will be put into development this year.

Blog more: I just need to get it done.

Sleep more: I get about five hours sleep every night and I do pretty well on it. However, this Christmas week, I've been sleeping beyond my normal alarm and it's really quite delicious, so I'm going to try to do more of it.

Work with good people: I've learnt way more by working with amazing people than I ever did on any course or at school, so, coupled with practice, it's the only way I'll continue to improve. This year, I will actively seek to work with people that complement my development and productively challenge my status quo to do things better. And I will also stop working with people that don't - life is too short.

This time next year it's going to be interesting to see what I do on this list and/or what replaced it!

Have a good one :)

For the last couple of years, I've cleared out the memory cards on my phones and posted my highlights. Be warned - there are lots of food pictures.

January

I love aquariums. I was in Vancouver over New Year's, so my brothers took me to the Vancouver Aquarium for my birthday.

Into the work year - a work in progress, this turned out to be the last piece of print design I produced at PayPoint.net that was published in iGaming magazine.

February

I'm a big fan of NFP Tweetup, so I was honoured to be a co-sponsor of NFP Tweetup 10 via my freelance business, Pixel Philosophy.

6.30am is a rare sight for me, but I started getting up early to go swimming before work. I'm happy to say that it's something I've continued through the year although, now that I start work before 8.30am, it's slightly more of a challenge, but a necessary one to set me up for the day.

April

At .net the marketing team instigated the first annual Easter egg hunt around the office. I posted photo clues on the internal blog (launched earlier in the year) periodically throughout the day, which drove more internal traffic and commenting on the blog than previous post attempts (spot the marketing campaign!).

May

This was lunch at Shoreditch House with Simon and Adam, two of the founding partners of beautiful world, to welcome me to the beautiful world team.

June

This is the last picture taken of my old team when we were all together at my leaving lunch...

...and one of us a little more relaxed at my leaving drinks. Thankfully, my new office is only five minutes up the road and, although I miss working with them immensely, I still see Siobhan, Etienne, David and Sam often.

On my third day at beautiful world, I met the #beautifulbaby, Rachel's daughter, Amber, for the first time.

November

Back in August, my old .net colleague and web developer genius, Sam Dorne, called me up to work on the design for an event on behalf of Microsoft for the Scottish Government. The event was Govcamp Scotland, and Sam and I were subsequently invited up to Edinburgh to contribute to the event. From presentation slides to signage and t-shirts, one of the best things about designing a logo is seeing it in action.

In November, I also went to Cologne and visited the chocolate factory where the Lindt people show you the process of producing chocolate that you can (conveniently) buy in the gift shop.

This tap was my favourite thing ever!

December

At the invitation of Janssen, I went to Brussels to present on behalf of beautiful world for the first time at a meeting of European patient groups on using social media to support their member organisations and better support patients and families.

The previous evening, I arrived very late and called room service to order a ham sandwich. This is what arrived.

So this photo isn't particularly great or exciting, but about an hour before it was taken, I took a phonecall from a client saying that we'd won a very exciting piece of work to kick off the new year. So I took Teri and Ash out to GBK to celebrate :)

And, because the year isn't complete without a mention of talented photographer, Gerry Alexis, this is the last photo of her calendar that I've been staring at all year.

"The only way to do great work is to love what you do."
— Steve Jobs

I was a big fan of Steve Jobs, not because of his job at Apple, but for his attitude to his work and life.

Not to bandwagon the moment, but every now and then life throws up an opportunity to collectively reflect on what is important.

Today, I realise how blessed I am that I get up every day and get to do work that I truly love with people that inspire and challenge me in equal measures.

I hope everyone finds that blessing.

The last month and a bit has been full of both consternation and excitement along with many cab journeys between 1 Finsbury Square and Zetland House off Old St; consternation because, at the end of this week, I will be leaving my wicked awesome team at PayPoint.net, but much excitement at joining my new team at beautiful world.

Choosing to leave .net has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make and it's not one that I took lightly. As a marketing all-rounder – creatively, strategically and commercially - being allowed to work on strategy, design, brand identity, user interfaces and behaviours, product launches, pitches, communications, retention and acquisition, and every facet of online marketing has been incredibly fulfilling. But it has been my amazing team that has made everything so much more rewarding; when you work with brilliant people, when people have faith in your ideas and you’re allowed to run with them, addressing the challenges that every day brings is actually more like fun.

I signed up to join Metacharge, one of the companies that merged, along with SECPay, to make PayPoint.net, for six weeks to help with the re-brand. In the three years since, I’m proud to have introduced social media in the business context to the company, launched their first blog, led the re-design of the website and created an entire ancillary asset library in the process, and headed up a pretty juicy project that will transform the brand from being simply about payments to truly being about ecommerce.

Not a day has gone by at .net when someone hasn’t taken the piss out of me, made me laugh or taught me something new, and it’s a massive comfort that, for the few days that I’ve already spent transitioning into beautiful world, the same can be said of my new team.

Thanks to David, Etienne, Eva, Sam, Siobhan and our amazing manager, Nicole, for the laughs, the challenges and the generosity of the last three years – I love you guys, I hope to work with you again in the future and I miss you already!

Why digital tweeps should consider going back to uni

Earlier this year, I took part in a panel event at my undergraduate university on careers in Media & PR. I don't usually get any feedback after these things, and I'm often left wondering whether anything I say is actually useful to someone about to graduate because I feel about a million years old and as many worlds away. So it was lovely when I got this tweet:

For my peers that work in anything vaguely digital, we're blessed to have found careers in a field so full of possibility and innovation, and what has struck me at these events is the wide breadth of paths and experiences that fellow panelists have taken to reach their current roles. Even though we live it every day, it's strange to me that most universities - and university careers services - still view anything digital as 'non-traditional' so there is a massive dearth of viable resources available to a soon-to-be graduate wanting a career in social media, SEO or digital PR.

So consider giving up yet another evening of networking to put some time in at your old university or local college to really tell it like it is. I bet no one will ever tell them that, if you graduate with a seemingly useless drama degree and spend two years temping, you can still end up strategising social media for an ecommerce brand then go on to be an account director at a pretty sweet agency by the time you're 30.

On associated note, if you're looking to hire a digital talent, please visit givethisgirlajob.org.uk :)

Pilipinas Got Talent: getting reacquainted with my roots?

In case you hadn’t noticed, my parents are from the Philippines. Like many Catholic Filipinos in London, I went to one of a handful of Catholic secondary schools in central London, where everyone had a cousin or older/younger (god) sibling. On the weekends everyone’s parents dragged them to Filipino festivals where everyone had a cousin or older/younger (god) sibling singing or dancing in a cultural group, or to the Baptisms, Holy Communions or Confirmations of a cousin or older/younger (god) siblings.

Thankfully, I managed to escape most of this growing up. I had no blood relatives in the UK and my weekends and school holidays were spent hot housing on music programmes, and later at youth theatre with very shiny, privately educated kids from Middle England families.

Consequently, all the things that my contemporaries perceived as being Filipino – the food, the festivals, the god siblings – were totally lost on me. Of course, my parents have uttered variations on the words, “In the Philippines, that wouldn’t happen…” every day since I was born. Against the liberal and structureless spirit that my arts peers were helping me to cultivate, being anything vaguely Filipino seemed to be backwards, irrelevant and out of touch to anything I was into or looking to achieve.

That is, until I came across the following:

If you know me, you’ll know that one of my favourite shows is Project Runway, a show I watch more for Tim Gunn and his Gunnisms - ‘can we mitigate this with some feathers?’ - than the fashion bit.

Anyhow, I was instantly fascinated by the way that a format with which I was familiar through the American version of the show translated with its Filipino participants. I was naively pleasantly surprised that terms such as ‘avant garde’ and ‘geeky chic’ were being liberally thrown around. Suddenly, in a weird way, there were people that I could relate to that were my age, at art or fashion schools, all armed with a creative vocabulary… all in Tagalog.

Although familiar franchises make foreign versions of such shows a little easier to process, what makes it uniquely Filipino is their framework of values. For example, here’s a clip from Pilipinas Got Talent of a violinist whose adversity is that she was born illegitimate, something I didn’t realise was still taboo enough there to warrant the sob music (can you imagine that happening here…!?).

(apologies for the poor picture quality – it was the only clip I could find that was subtitled in English)

One of my colleagues asked me if I felt any more ‘in touch with my roots’ since I discovered these franchises and the answer, of course, is no – thanks to YouTube and the business of television, it’s merely the way in which it’s packaged that is more palatable to me thanks to its familiar format, but its underpinning values are still completely foreign. That said, I’m sure my parents would say the same thing about me.

So I discovered something very shocking about myself recently. I discovered that I can, indeed, be a MORNING PERSON!

My schedule on Wednesday - Friday mirrors that of most office workers - eight and a half hours (in theory!) starting just after 9am in the City. I was finding that, although I love going to the gym, I was reluctant to do so with everyone else that was queuing for equipment during the after work rush. Working out after work also ate into my freelance time and just left me too wired to be able to wind down effectively, which meant that I was actually sleep deprived the next day.

So one Wednesday, about four weeks ago, I set my alarm for 6.15, and actually managed to wake up quite easily right before it went off. I threw on some gym clothes, put my office clothes in my bag, and went off to the gym. I have to admit that it was very strange to be shuffling along in the dark but the gym is surprisingly packed at that hour of the morning, so I'm not alone.

This has been my morning routine for most of the week since then and the results have been surprising. I thought that I would experience a massive energy crash mid-afternoon, but that hasn't been the case at all. Where as previously, it would've taken me a good 45 minutes to get going once I got into the office, I'm actually awake and alert and ready to go the minute my computer has booted up.

It's true that in the evenings I get tired earlier, but because I can get to my freelance and personal projects earlier, it's nice to be able to wind down more effectively afterwards.

The only downside to working out so early is that I've had to confine the mornings to swimming. As my gym is close to where I live, I can literally get out of bed, throw some clothes on and be in the pool 20 minutes later. With such a short time period, I've found that my joints aren't sufficiently awake to be able to take the impact of running or lifting, so swimming is a kinder option.

With a nice foundation, I'm aiming to schedule the rest of my day to enhance productivity. The rest of the year is going to be uber busy, and with a plethora of contracts, a new show, a new blog and some traveling to be done, I'm willing to try every trick in the book!

On Friday last week, the latest London branch of Le Pain Quotidien opened on Wilton Road in Victoria. Happily, it's in my neck of the woods, and I've already managed to work my way through a nice chunk of the menu. Here's a little collection of photos from client and family lunches this week, including an Italian platter including ricotta cheese, roasted veggies, prosciutto, artichoke paste and sundried tomatoes; a treacle tart and cream; a Lyonnaise salad with confit duck, egg, potatoes and green beans; lentil soup (I think) and chorizo with lemons; bacon and scotch broth and roasted potatoes; leek and potato soup, and chorizo and prawn salad.
