The end of an era - no more selling through RockAffairs

As you may have noticed, RockAffairs has trimmed down somewhat this last few months. There are a few reasons for this: although it is a great resource for artists, the listeners were never interested in buying the music. They just wanted to listen to what was available - which is all well and good, but it doesn't put any cash into the pockets of those making the music. It was a difficult decision to make, but artists can no longer sell their music through RockAffairs. They can upload tracks and make them available for streaming, but there's simply no point in continuing to provide merchant services. We sold less than 20 tracks in 2010 - across 400 artists. That's not even enough to fuel a tourbus from Birmingham to London... Artists can still create their own shop front to sell physical items if they wish; whether the time and effort spent setting it up will ever be worthwhile, I cannot say. Please 'LIKE' RockAffairs on Facebook - we will continue to promote our artists and the music we're into over there. Click here to do thatI'll keep digging out the articles, and I'll keep trying to push the right people in the right direction. We started off with 20 artists, 7 of whom are signed now. I take no credit for that, but given the cut-throat nature of the industry, I think it's a pretty good statistic to start with.Keep doing what you love,Sarah

Another pay to play scam ripping off unsigned artists

Thanks to Jon Booth at UKBands (ukbands.net) for tipping us off about this one. RockAffairs (rockaffairs.com) totally backs the sentiment.----Oh boy, oh boy... imagine this..... an UNSIGNED FESTIVAL, 80 BANDS, (40/day) ANY Styles, ANY Genre, it don't matter, METAL with POP or RAP, you all get to play a festival. As long as you sell loads of tickets, at least 10 @ £40 each = £400, and then you have to pay for your transport to get there. Do you get to see any great head liners..? NO!!.So you pay £400 per band to play in front of other bands and their friends. Sounds like PAY to PLAY at its worst here ..This SUCKS just like all the other pay to play scams and competitions out there. Oh and the more tickets you sell the higher up the headline you go, great incentive yeah trouble is you could sell 200 and then play in front of all your own fans as all the other people have left because they were totally sick of listening to bands they're not into, and frozen stiff as it is almost November. They make a massive PAY to PLAY fortune and you get to play another fake gig in front of your friends, fans and family members . The good thing is you get to camp in a field at the end of October so take your waterproofs and loads of jumpers, and waste your time once again....

Seasons Greetings from RockAffairs!

2009 has been an eventful year in the world of RockAffairs. To the many hundreds of artists who signed up and shared their music, thank you. And also thank you to the handful of listeners who decided to buy tracks.
I guess that's the disappointing part. People don't seem to want to pay money for music. For now, RockAffairs will continue to offer artists a way to sell their music for free, however, unless something dramatic happens over the next three months, we'll have to find a different catch. What's the use in us offering you the facility to sell your music when no one is buying? We're not iTunes and we're not Napster - I guess the bottom line is, unless you let people know that you're selling here, they're not going to come.
We diversified our market to include viral apps and games - first Legionnaires, and now RoboKlub (check it out at http://apps.facebook.com/roboklub). These were low-level training exercises in the art of embracing social media, the first one failed, the second one is succeeding... amazingly so. I'm waiting for that light of inspiration to show me how to hone my new-found skills into something that can help unsigned bands: it will come. It always does. It's just the waiting in the meantime.
To everyone, have a fun holiday, and a super-productive new year.
love,
Sarah & The RockAffairs team.

So far, we have added the basic functionality for Sign in with Twitter and Facebook Connect that allows you to sign into your accounts on those sites, but we haven't integrated the user functionality.

JBServers.net and several other companies that we share service lines with, are under heavy dDOS attack. While we have mitigated most of them, the current attack is large and extremely wide spread. We can see that server is under DDOS attack and to solve the issue we have enabled Cisco Guard for the entire public facing network IP range. JBServers.net is in communication with other leading internet service providers in all 6 datacenters to assist in tracking the location and trend of the attack to put a permanent end to the issue. We would also like to note, that to current- apparent server outages have been a direct result of this issue- the servers themselves are running without issue and are in top shape. We would like to suggest that to help in this situation, please make sure that all of your installed scripts are up to date- and please feel free to login to cpanel and run the virus scanner on your site to ensure it is 100% clean as it should be (its good practice to scan your site and email folders once a month). We expect this issue to be completely resolved and made history within the next 24 hours- and have over 60 staff collectively working on the issue. There may be momentary interruptions while determining the best course of action for this issue. Thank you very much for your patience with this, we know this is very frustrating- and of course shouldn't be happening, such as the internet at times. Sincerely, JBServers.net SysAdmin Team

Bon Jovi Competition - The Winner!

Thank you for all the entries! The competition is now closed, and we're pleased to announced our winner... Gerard70 correctly answered that the "Pizza Parlor Jury":

"were used by Bon Jovi to help decide what tracks made it to Slippery When Wet. Basically they played the tracks to some local kids when they had finished recording and they favoured some of the key tracks the band weren't sure about including."

He's won himself a full hospitality package to the Bon Jovi gig this Friday, including overnight accommodation, pre-gig dining and post-gig drinks.

We still have ONE TICKET left to the San Miguel Hidden Depths with Wall of Sound tomorrow night... if you want to go, the first person to PM me gets it!
