Richard Patrick Of Filter

After many years of lackluster albums Filter has released a MONSTER! With the heavy aggression of Short Bus, but the song writing depth of Title Of Record, The Trouble with Angels is without question the best new release from this band (or it's leader) in a very long time. It may be their best release in the band's history.

This is not copy that I've taken from some lame bio, these are the words of myself (Mark Carras). To be honest I was not too excited about this interview until I started listening to this new cd. Then I couldn't wait to talk to leader Richard Patrick.

The other good news? Richard is off of drugs! No longer spacey and incorrherant, Richard gives what i feel is one of my proudest interviews. He goes in depth about not just this new masterpiece, but why his previous work wasn't as great. We also talk about why people should not be immediately turned off by the auto-tune just because everyone who has used it before sucked.

This may be a few minutes longer than most of my interviews, but there is a reason. There was a ton to talk about.

Marc Storace of Krokus

For 30 years now, Krokus has been Switzerland's most successful rock export. No other band sells albums from its back catalogue like Krokus.

They've written music history, celebrated "real rock'n'roll", enjoyed the highs and mastered the lows!

Now the original Krokus line-up is back to enjoy its second spring: Hoodoo is the title of the rock legends' powerful comeback album - their first in over 20 years.

From the small Swiss town of Solothurn, the band catapulted itself and its incomparable brand of straight hard rock right to the top of the music world.

1980 saw the band set out to conquer America, Canada and England, quickly consolidating its reputation as a strong, no-nonsense live band. Soon they were part of unforgettable headline tours and on the same bill as incredible bands like AC/DC, Van Halen, Quiet Riot, Ted Nugent, Judas Priest, Motorhead and many, many more. These were wild times, full of big adventures, which saw the band not only going gold and platinum in the U.S. and Canada, but also being made honorary citizens of Memphis, Tennessee.

Following this triumphant tour of North America, Krokus became the first Swiss band ever to sell out the legendary "Hallenstadion" in Zurich.

In total, Krokus has notched up 10 top-selling albums worldwide and a "Diamond Award" for selling over 1 million records in Switzerland alone.

In 2008, the band celebrated an incredible comeback with a reunion concert in Berne's "Stade De Suisse". No less than 10,000 delighted fans came and witnessed the most astonishing comeback in the history of Swiss rock.

Encouraged by this sustained success and how much they love to play, the band made the most of the flames burning inside and went straight back to the studio to record. They spent two years creating a fiery new album that is sure to become a classic.

Par Of Sabaton

Sabaton are a Swedish Grammi-nominated power metal band from Sweden. Their music is battle-minded with a historical slant, bringing to mind Iron Maiden's classic songs with a newer school edge. This album, for example, is inspired by the individual battles and uprisings during WWII. They initially geared up for war and started to make plans for world domination in `99, and are starting to realize this destiny on their sixth full-length album, Coat of Arms. The band's lineup of Joakim Brodén on vocals, Oskar Montelius on guitars, Rikard Sundén on guitars, Pär Sundström on bass, Daniel Mullback on drums, and Daniel Mÿhr on keyboards has been in place for years. Their sound has grown and changed and now with a heavier sound and much more powerful songs, Sabaton are now ready to spread the word under the Coat of Arms!

Marco Hietala Of Tarot

During 2008-2009 Janne, Marco and Zac had written quite a lot of new stuff already at their spare time. It only took a few demo sessions for the guys to come up with a bunch of songs, which you will be able to hear on their eighth studio album titled, Gravity Of Light.

Most of the demo work for this album was done in August and September 2009, and the actual recordings for the album started immediately after that in November 2009. Mixing has been done by Janne and Mikko Tegelman and the mastering by Mika Jussila at Finnvox studios in January and February 2010. The album is released by King Foo entertainment, which acts also as the booking agency and management for Tarot.

The album feels like meeting an old friend. Some things are the same, but your friend has gained weight. He shows new scars, and tattoos. The beard is longer and he projects a meaner and faster temper. At the same time there´s still a big heart at the center. When you hear “Gravity Of Light” you will believe.

Luca Turilli of Rhapsody Of Fire

The Frozen Tears of Angels is the eighth full-length album by Rhapsody of Fire. It was released on April 30, 2010 via Nuclear Blast. It is the first album to be released after a long hiatus, caused by a legal dispute with the band's previous label, Magic Circle Music. The concept album is the third chapter of "The Dark Secret Saga", which began with Symphony of Enchanted Lands II: The Dark Secret, but is more speed and guitar-oriented compared to its two predecessors.

Nevermore

In the heavy metal community many writers toss around the monikers “legend” and “genre defying” to describe many bands, but these terms have never been more accurate if they are referring to NEVERMORE, who have perfectly carved out their own unique niche over the past 15 years of dominance. This group’s sound encompasses every element of the metal spectrum and is like no other band within their genre. They have played everywhere across the world to over hundreds of thousands of people and after all this time they have never been more determined, focused and powerful than they are now.

One always says that you can’t rush greatness or perfection, and this couldn’t be more true in the case of NEVERMORE, who last released the highly acclaimed This Godless Endeavor in 2005. The Seattle quartet have triumphantly returned with the much anticipated new full-length release, The Obsidian Conspiracy, which is what could be their most impressive offering of their illustrious, decade plus, heralded career.

The Obsidian Conspiracy was recorded with renowned producer Peter Wichers (who previously worked with NEVERMORE vocalist Warrel Dane on his solo debut Praises to the War Machine). Longtime friend and collaborator Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Opeth) once again handled mixing duties. The captivating and dynamic coverart was once again created by the great Travis Smith (Amorphis, Opeth).

Over the years, NEVERMORE constantly evolved while developing into one of the world’s most remarkable and inimitable metal acts uniting progressive technique, charismatic vocals, thought-provoking lyrics and thrashing impact. This progression is most evident on The Obsidian Conspiracy as it is an epic journey through the pantheon of metal taking the listener on an introspective ride of emotions and could be best described as more of a soundtrack to the senses.

This quintessential metal band was formed out of the ashes of Seattle, Washington, based thrash act Sanctuary in 1991 by Dane and Jim Sheppard (bass), with the addition of Jeff Loomis (guitar, who had played in the final line-up of Sanctuary) and Mark Arrington on drums. A few years later, Van Williams joined the band (drums). The band has since released six full-length albums, toured the world a number of times and captivated the hearts of metalheads touring with such diverse and major acts ranging from Megadeth, In Flames, Disturbed, Arch Enemy, Dimmu Borgir and Children of Bodom, among countless others.

In 2010, the mighty NEVERMORE have returned to reclaim their spot atop the heap of the metal world and prove that they have truly crafted an album of excellence.

Bruce Kulick

Bruce Kulick has been playing professionally since 1975. He first gained notoriety as a member of the touring band for Meat Loaf's classic "Bat Out Of Hell" album in 1977, playing dual guitars with his brother Bob. Shortly after, Bruce formed the band Blackjack with then aspiring singer Michael Bolton. After the release of two albums, Blackjack folded and Kulick considered joining Billy Squier's band after playing on Squier's debut, "Tale of the Tape". This never materialized, as Bruce was asked to join KISS, where he remained as their lead guitarist for twelve years, joining the band for the Animalize tour in 1984 and continuing with the band until the 1996 reunion tour. Bruce performed around the world with the KISS and won many Platinum and Gold awards. The amazing relationship relationship he still has with the KISS Army is a true testament to his performing and writing abilities shared with the iconic group. He is heavily featured on KISSOLOGY II and III, the band's DVD's spanning their historic 35 year career.

After leaving KISS, Bruce continued his musical development, forming UNION with John Corabi in 1997. UNION released three albums between 1998 and 2000 before going on hiatus to pursue other endeavors. Bruce and John teamed up with Eric Singer and formed the Eric Singer Project (E.S.P.), releasing an album in 1998. Bruce also maintained his connection to KISS, contributing to their Psycho Circus album, the Detroit Rock City soundtrack, and both of the solo efforts from Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley.

In early 2001 Bruce released his debut solo album, Audio Dog, which was followed in 2003 with Transformer. Both albums showcase many different sides of Bruce as a performer, with a great mixture of instrumentals and vocal tracks. Another facet of Bruce's playing was revealed in 2001 when he joined Grand Funk Railroad as lead guitarist after receiving a personal invitation from drummer Don Brewer. Bruce is still touring with GFR and is currently in his 9th year as their lead guitarist.

Through the years Kulick has been involved with session work, producing new artists, instructional DVD's, and music compositions. In 2004 rap superstar Kayne West covered a song from Bruce's Blackjack days with Michael Bolton on West's debut multi-platinum disc, "The College Dropout". Bruce's session work with Finland's LORDI won Kulick platinum awards in Europe.

Kulick has continued the pleasure of jamming and sharing his experience with campers at the "Rock N Roll Fantasy" camps that he enjoys being involved with. His counseling is rewarding for both him and the campers. Jamming with rock legends like Jack Bruce and Roger Daltrey that appear at the camps are experiences that make Bruce very proud.

In February 2009 Bruce performed 13 shows with ESP in Europe, where they played sold out shows in seven countries. The Eric Singer Project was promoting a live DVD from Australia from 2006, and a CD they recorded live in Tokyo, Japan in 2007.

Bruce returned from Australia this past April 2009, where he was doing guitar clinics for a major music chain. He was promoting a three track EP from his forthcoming third solo CD titled BK3. The full CD will feature Gene Simmons, Nick Simmons, Steve Lukather, John Corabi, Eric Singer, and Doug Fieger from "The Knack". He has been spending the summer traveling with Grand Funk. BK3 is out now.

Levi Werstler

I have to admit that when I first heard of this album I wasn't that interested. Due to the mindless race to be the most brutal band, I am now beyond jaded to any band with growl vocals of any kind. So I've never given Daath a chance other than watching them play at Ozzfest in 2007.

All that changed recently. It started when I forced myself to give the cd a listen. Turns out the cd was nothing like I expected. It had the depth that most Metal today lacks.

Then when I did this interview Eyal Levi told me things that made me think he might have the same thoughts as I do when it comes to what creates good Metal and what is wrong with so much of what is called Metal in today's time.

Pain

PAIN, the band featuring HYPOCRISY mainman Peter Tägtgren, will finally make their latest release Cynic Paradise available to North America on June 8th. This version will also feature an alternate cover (attached) and a bonus live CD recorded on March 23-24, 2009 at the Zenith in Paris, France during the band's European tour with NIGHTWISH.

Doro Pesch

Legendary German metal queen DORO PESCH celebrated her 2,500th concert recently on March 13, 2010. The landmark performance took place at the new Burg-Wächter Castello Arena in her hometown of Düsseldorf, Germany in front of 2,500 raging fans and included guest appearances from Destruction mainman Schmier, Krokus vocalist Marc Storace, and Holy Moses frontwoman Sabina Classen, among others. "A huge heartfelt ‘Thank You’ to everyone for [their] continued support,” the singer gushed, “especially for making the 2,500th concert such a night to remember! What a special time we all had...The crowd kept it strong until the end and the lucky few even more at the after-party. The band could have played all night had the venue not kicked us out! And thanks to all of our guests, including Krypteria, Luke Gosser And Marc Storace, Schmier , Sabina and Andy [Classen] and Burn Bitch Burn."

Exclusive Interview with The Alien Blakk

So who is The Alien Blakk? Well it is a blend of Primus, Meshuggah, Nevermore, and Buckethead and you almost have an idea. Although Joshua says he doesn't care about heavy, this is a very heavy release. It's not just your typical prog-metal outing though. It's far more chaotic than that. So if you demand more from your prog-metal, this should be your next purchase!

I have to admit that I wasn't that impressed by the first release under the "The Alien Blakk" banner. So even if you weren't impressed by that first release, you need to take a listen to this one. It has what so much Metal today is missing. It is also a massive improvement from the last album.

Exclusive Interview with Blitz of Overkill

Many Overkill fans were extremely disappointed in the Overkill releases Killbox 13 and ReliXIV. They gained back some fans with 2007 release Immortalis, but with Ironbound I think they will win back everyone else and a few extras.

Exclusive Interview With Pearl Aday

I have said this before, but the Rock that is praised now is not Rock at all. It is over produced pop that has had the passion edited out in Pro-Tools and the talentless singer has been "fixed" with Auto-Tune. Rock today isn't dead though. There are a small select few still raising the flag of true Rock and Roll grit.

There is none better than the spawn of Meat Loaf and the wife of Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian. Peal Aday might look like an innocent little thing and most would expect her to be about as bad as other big rock stars talentless children who think respect should just be handed to them because of who their parent is. So not true of Pearl Aday. She is a mix of Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, and even the attitude of Appetite For Destruction from Guns And Roses. Yeah, that's right. I said Appetite For Destruction! Slash should have had Pearl on his record instead of that annoying Ferggie bitch. His new solo release would have had better reviews.

This cd is not what I expected at all. It will shock anyone who gives it a chance. So listen as Pearl Aday talks about all things Pearl and her great new cd Little Immaculate White Fox!

Exclusive Interview With White Wizzard

White Wizzard was born as a response to the modern more "angsty" and "screamo" styles of Metal. Some may call them "retro", but we at Rock My Monkey prefer to call them Old School. Of course that is a term thrown around by bands playing styles that are only a few years old. So to be clear this is true old school. The band may be only a few years old, but the style they play is from the era when Metal truly got it's wings and when what was and wasn't Metal was crystal clear. More importantly it was when Metal was more about the quality of playing, quality of songwriting, and level of musicianship. It wasn't about some boring knuckle dragging test of who could listen to the most "brootal" thing that could be created.

White Wizzard returns things to an era when Metal was about creating the best music possible and nothing more. This is from before the Metal scene got confused and distracted by things that don't mean shit!

Exclusive Interview with Oliver Drake of Evile

Founded by old school friends Matt Drake and Ben Carter, and after playing with different guitarists and bass players for a year or so, Matt's brother Ol was asked to join as lead guitarist. After a short search for a bass player The 3 were contacted by Mike Alexander via an ad in a local guitar shop, and the band was formed. With every member contributing to every aspect of the band they have a uniqueness and strength which gives them a cutting edge, influenced by bands such as Sepultura, Exodus, Metallica, Annihilator and Slayer to name but a few, Evile have created something that the metal world is crying out for.

So many bands now claim to be thrash, but are nothing like the legendary bands that started the style. They have more in common with Death Metal than they do with true Thrash. Not so with Evile! Evile is one of a rare few bands that don't just claim to play Thrash, but actually have that old school sound to back it up!

Mighty UNLEASHED are back and let the world tree Yggdrasil tremble! These are the most fitting words to describe what a mighty body of work the Swedes` new masterpiece “As Yggdrasil Trembles...” really is!

21 years – and still going strong! UNLEASHED were there when classic Swedish death metal started to rise in the early 1990s, and they stay true to their roots til this very day. But where other acts (like DISMEMBER or ENTOMBED) opted for a gnarly trademark Sunlight studio sound, Johnny Hedlund and his warriors chose their own path: UNLEASHED play their own brand of Viking death metal, including lots of epic midtempo parts and a crunchy, heavy-ass production.

Exclusive Interview with Immortal

IMMORTAL have been one of the most important black metal bands in the world, since the release of their first demo “The Northern Upins Death” in 1990.

The band was founded by Abbath Doom Occulta and Demonaz Doom Occulta, and together with different drummers, this core line-up released the first three legendary albums, Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism (1992), Pure Holocaust (1993) and Battles In The North (1995).

Drummer Horgh joined the band in 1996, turning out to be the perfect match for the band, and the band released the Blizzard Beasts album (1997). However, fate struck as Demonaz was diagnosed with tendinitis and could no longer play guitar at the speed required for Immortal, but he still continued to work with the lyrics.

Thus, Abbath changed from bass to guitars, and the band continued with several bass players over the years, releasing albums like At The Heart Of Winter (1999), Damned In Black (2000) and Sons Of Northern Darkness (2002).

The band was put on ice in 2003, but returned to the stage in 2007, playing the “7 Dates Of Blashyrkh” comeback tour, which was followed by headlining apperances at several major European festivals, sold out shows in the US and a tour of Australia and New Zealand.

IMMORTAL released All Shall Fall on September 25, 2009 (Europe) and October 6, 2009 (North America), through Nuclear Blast Records worldwide.

Exclusive Interview with Clint Lowery of Sevendust

Sevendust fans have always said that the live shows were way better than the studio releases. With Cold Day Memory I think the band has finally unleashed a cd that will satisfy picky fans like myself. Could this new found energy be due to Clint returning to the band after several years of absence? Could it be from teh band being over the crushing money problems from four years ago? Could it be the producer Johnny K? Why is Cold Day Memory the best Sevendust release of the band's career?

The bands new material sounds like they hit record and went for it. No 20 takes. No over saturation of effects where their is no way a band can pull it off live without the background tape being louder than the actual band. This is about as raw as Rock gets. So if you are looking for some weak pop tune someone can sing on American idol, keep looking. This is not your band! If you want to be reminded of the integrity Rock 'n' Roll used to have, take a listen.

Exclusive interview with Jeff Oly Olsen of Retro Grave

Retro Grave was born from Jeff Olson, a percussion artist from the internationally acclaimed doom metal band, Trouble. The release of Trouble's debut, "Psalm 9," in 1984 and the "The Skull" following in 1985 soon led to the departure of Olson to pursue teaching music while simultaneously writing musical scores and, later, receiving a BM degree in Film Scoring from Berklee College of Music. During that departure, Olson still participated in all of Trouble's future albums with the exception of "Manic Frustration" recorded in 1992. Olson later rejoined Trouble for the albums, "Plastic Green Head," "Simple Mind Condition," "Unplugged," and "Live in LA."

Olson has toured internationally with Trouble, off and on since 1979, headlining shows throughout the US and performing at numerous music festivals throughout Europe that included the infamous 1995 Dynamo Open Air Festival in front of a staggering record high audience for Dynamo of over 118,000 people. Olson's last show with Trouble was at "The End" club in Nashville, Tenn on July 19, 2008. Although retired from Trouble, Olson wanted to continue on with his own band, Retro Grave.

Exclusive Interview with Matt Kelly of DropKick Murphys

What can be said about the legendary Dropkick Murphys that hasn't been said a million times before? The best American Celtic punk/hardcore punk band formed in Quincy, Massachusetts. First playing together in the basement of a friend's barbershop, they blended traditional Celtic folk rock and punk rock in a way no one else had. Their influences include Stiff Little Fingers, The Pogues, The Clash, Thin Lizzy, The Dubliners, Hot Water Music, and the Swingin' Utters.

The band has made a name for itself and built a following as a result of their non-stop touring all over the world and their St. Patrick's Day weekend shows, which are held in and around Boston. It was from one of those legendary shows that this recording was made.

The intensity and camaraderie of last year’s St. Patrick’s Day shows are captured on the live CD/DVD LIVE ON LANSDOWNE, BOSTON MA, due March 16 on the band’s own Born & Bred Records (ILG). Following in the tradition of 2002’s Live On St. Patrick’s Day From Boston MA—which has sold over 250,000 copies worldwide—LIVE ON LANSDOWNE features an entirely different 20-song set list and a guest appearance by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones on DKM’s platinum-selling single “I’m Shipping Up To Boston.”

In July, 2009, it was announced that work was ongoing for their next record Starve for the Devil. In September, recording sessions began with Nathaniel Carter performing bass and production being handled again by Chris "Zeuss" Harris.

Starve For The Devil was released in North America on February 9th and sold around 1,800 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at No. 13 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

Exclusive Interview with Kyle Gass of Trainwreck And Tenacious D

Trainwreck has been described by Gass as a “cornucopia of rock and a 5-headed hydra of pleasure”.

The Wreckoning is Trainwreck’s latest 15-song release that features instant classics such as “Milk The Cobra”, “Bothered & Hot” and “El Mustachio”. All tracks highlight the bands par-tay credo. Case in point, the video for “Brodeo”, a tale of man-on-man ‘bonding’ could very well be the band's manthem. Lyrics touch on the finer points of beer pong, chips and dip and lots of energetic men taking their shirts off at a pool party sans chicks. It’s a visual Broverload to be sure.

Trainwreck’s absurdist comedy stage banter and lyrics are derived from characters they’ve developed within the band; essentially living caricatures of themselves. Never ones to shy away from big guitars (or occasional flute fugues and fantasy), Trainwreck have earned themselves fans all over the globe headlining venues in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia.

Trainwreck is: Kyle Gass (aka Klip Calhoun) from Tenacious D, Jason Reed (aka “Lee of the D” & biker hayseed Darryl Donald), John Konesky (aka John Bartholomew Shredman), John Spiker (aka Boy Johnny) and Nate Rothacker (aka Dallas St. Bernard). The band thrives on tours that have occasionally left melted faces, busted ear-fannies and the occasional bastard child in their wake. Their latest release is The Wreckoning.

Janus is a band based out of Chicago, Illinois. They were formed in 2004 and are signed to REALID/ILG Records. The band has gained popularity on rock radio stations across the U.S. due to their single "Eyesore," and has toured with such bands as All That Remains, Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, Sevendust, and Sick Puppies.

Red Right Return is the first studio album by Janus and was re-released on September 22, 2009 through REALID Records. First release of this album was in 2008 through Level It Records/Glass Bottom Boat Music.

The name Red Right Return comes from an old saying used by Ship captains to remind themselves when returning home to port to always keep the red buoy on the right side of the ship.

Exclusive Interview with Ian McFarland

Ian McFarland is an Emmy nominated and award winning director/producer from Boston, MA. In 2004 he started his production company Killswitch Productions and since then he has directed, produced and edited over 20 music videos, served as director of photography on two seasons of the Peabody Award wining PBS TV show Design Squad as well as co-produced and directed the Emmy nominated and award winning film, "Rooters". Ian has deep roots in the underground music and film scene, due in large part to his role as a member of the heavily influential Boston Hardcore/Punk Rock band Blood For Blood. From 1994-2004 Blood For Blood gathered a devoted worldwide following that cemented their place in the underground music scene. Ian recently finished up working as a director/ producer/ editor on a series of short documentaries for PBS on engineering. Currently he is putting the final touches on his second feature length documentary film called "Chip on My Shoulder" as well as directing/producing a number of music videos.

Exclusive Interview with Carmine Appice

Author, clinician, drummer... Carmine Appice first came to prominence as the percussionist with the late 1960s psychedelic band Vanilla Fudge. He contributed distinctive background harmonies with bassist Tim Bogert, adding to the group's high decibel sonic assault. After five albums, Appice and Bogert left Vanilla Fudge to form the blues rock quartet Cactus with vocalist Rusty Day and guitarist Jim McCarty. Eventually, Appice left Cactus with Bogert to join Jeff Beck in the power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice, and then later joined Rod Stewart's backing band in 1977, co-writing hit songs such as "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" and "Young Turks". In 1978, Appice played drums on Paul Stanley's first solo album. He was a member of KGB featuring Ray Kennedy, Rick Grech, Mike Bloomfield and Barry Goldberg, and has recorded with Stanley Clarke, Ted Nugent, and Pink Floyd. He was the drummer for the bands King Kobra and Blue Murder, and toured with Ozzy Osbourne.

Appice first created Guitar Zeus in 1995 when he recruited some of the most famous guitarists in the world to be a part of his project, from Zakk Wylde and Ted Nugent to Brian May (Queen) and Slash (Guns N Roses), even tennis legend John McEnroe. Songs also included guest vocals by Dug Pinnick and Edgar Winter. Throughout the late 1990's, three Guitar Zeus CDs were released to worldwide critical acclaim.

The 27 track collection also includes holiday recordings from Weezer, Collective Soul, The Beach Boys, Jon Anderson of Yes, and others. "Run Rudolph Run," written by Johnny Marks and Marvin Brodie, was first recorded by Chuck Berry in 1958. Exclusive Interview with Alex Dementia of The Resurrection Sorrow

Holding for the right time to strike requires discipline. The heavy metal tank known as The Resurrection Sorrow has been idling for some time—ominously. All the while being shovel fed swamp water and coffin dirt, preparing its attack.

Favoring raw emotion over contrived calculation, the NYC four-piece craft songs of anthemic proportions. Using stone-heavy handed riffing, barbaric percussive destruction and brooding, occult-inspired vocals by singer Alex Dementia, TRS has trademarked a hooking catchiness not easily ignored. With homage being paid to the oracles of 1970’s England, the Bay Area of the 1980’s and those of 1990’s Seattle and American swamplands, TRS has taken the torch from its predecessors and is just taking it further into the cave.

TRS was founded by vocalist Alex Dementia (ex After Dark) and bassist/guitarist Alex Coelho (Tides Within, ex-Malstrom). Riffs were four-tracked and passed back and forth, being woven into what would become the band’s debut, “Hour of the Wolf”. The project gained momentum and sincerity with the enlistment of renowned NYC drummer Louie Gasparro (Supervillain, Murphy’s Law, Blitzspeer). Working for months as a three-piece, the unit continued to shape the entity, demoing 11 songs in late October of 2008.

By January of 2009, TRS had teamed up with veteran NYC engineer Joe Hogan (Nebula, The Atomic Bitchwax) and began tracking in several locations in Brooklyn and NYC. “Hour of the Wolf” is an exercise in sonic might, running the gamut between thunderous riffing, snarling hooks and deep-rooted grooves. Mixed at One East Studio in NYC, Hogan melded the rawness of the band with an arresting depth.

Louisiana native Zak Gross was recruited to handle the lead guitars for the recording. His ability as a shredder and enthusiasm for the project made him a lock as the band’s guitar player, seeing Coelho shifting to bass.

TRS is bringing something back. The wheel is not being reinvented here—it’s being reinforced. “Hour of the Wolf” will see a November 2009 release date, after which TRS will take a grass roots approach to touring—a forward blasting unit with a reverent eye on the rearview mirror.

Introducing: Pantheist

Most Doom Metal bands will either play with clean vocals like St Vitus or Candlemass or go the death vocal route. Very few bands can blend these two styles of Doom well. Most don't even try. Pantheist is a band that does this well. They may not be pushed by one of the bigger Metal labels, but the band is using social networking tools like Twitter and MySpace to get the word out. After the band hunted us down on Twitter, we had to schedule a chat to find out about all things Pantheist.

Exclusive Interview with Mark Jansen of Epica

In early 2002, Mark Jansen left After Forever due to creative differences. He then began looking for musicians who would work towards a more classical/symphonic type of music project; this was initially named "Sahara Dust"[1]. In late 2002, the band courted Helena Michaelsen[1] (from Trail of Tears) as its frontwoman, but shortly after she was replaced by the then unknown mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, who was Jansen's girlfriend at the time. The band's line-up was completed by guitarist Ad Sluijter, drummer Jeroen Simons, bassist Yves Huts, and keyboard player Coen Janssen. The name was later changed to Epica, inspired by Kamelot's eponymous album.

Epica then assembled a choir (made up of two men and four women) and a string orchestra (three violins, two violas, two cellos and an upright bass) to play along with them. Still under the name Sahara Dust, they produced a two-song demo entitled Cry for the Moon in 2002. As a result, they were signed to Transmission Records.

Six years later we have the fourth studio release from the band. Design Your Universe, the new studio album from Holland's symphonic
metal band EPICA, has debuted on the Billboard Heatseekers chart at #12
and the Top Hard Music Albums chart at #47 for first-week sales in
excess of 2,000 copies.

Exclusive interview with Andy Chase of Brookville

Andy Chase of BROOKVILLE is a New York-based musician and producer. He is best known as a member of the band IVY, and has co-produced and co-written all of the music on IVY's four critically acclaimed albums, as well as IVY's score for the Farrelly Brothers movie "Shallow Hal", and IVY's song I'll Be Near You for the film "Bee Season" (Richard Gere, Juliette Binoche). As a producer, he has enjoyed success with the French pop group Tahiti 80, whose debut album Puzzle was a critical and commercial hit around the world, particularly in Japan, where it went gold. This success in Asia led to numerous subsequent production and songwriting offers for Chase, including work with Japanese megastar Chara and several other artists, all of whom recorded songs that Chase had specifically written for them. Most recently Chase has finished producing & mixing the new Juliana Hatfield album coming out August 2008. Chase also co-owns Stratosphere Sound recording studio in NYC with former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha and IVY bandmate (also in Fountains Of Wayne) Adam Schlesinger.

BROOKVILLE allows Chase to balance his talent for songcraft with his love for rich sonic landscapes and textures. It is a band where Chase is free to explore the type of languid, atmospheric music that is only hinted at within the tight pop framework of IVY's records. But the many contributing musicians that appear, including Eric Matthews, James Iha, The Brazilian Girls, Steve Osborne (New Order, Elbow, Doves), Jean-Pierre Ensuque (Autour de Lucie), Jody Porter (Fountains Of Wayne), Josh Lattanzi (Ben Kweller, The Lemonheads), Marty Beller (They Might Be Giants), and many others, suggest that BROOKVILLE is always a collaborative effort that leaves ample room for experimentation and exploration. Life In The Shade, BROOKVILLE's follow up to "Wonderfully Nothing", was released in June 2006.

Exclusive interview with Tyler Mane

After retiring from wrestling, Tyler Mane appeared in numerous films, including How to Make a Monster (as Hardcore), Joe Dirt, The Scorpion King, Troy (as Ajax), Hercules (as Antaeus), X-Men as Sabretooth, and The Devil's Rejects (Rufus).

In 2007, he filmed Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween, in which he played the iconic starring role of Michael Myers. After winning the role, he noted that he consecutively watched seven of the eight Halloween films (excluding the third because Michael Myers does not appear) to better understand his character. He is the tallest actor (6' 8") to portray the character. In 2009, he reprised the role again in Rob Zombie's H2, becoming only the second actor to play Michael Myers more than once.

Exclusive interview with Jon Howard of Threat Signal

Threat Signal arose from the filthy, industrialized east end of Hamilton Ontario Canada in late 2003. A detuned, syncopated, melodic metal machine, Threat Signal combines the complexity trash metal, with a more contemporary grove sound involving technical rhythms, and melodic musical passages.

Before the band had played a single live show, their home recordings generated a significant interest online. The song ‘Rational Eyes’ hit 1 on the international independent music website GarageBand.com and remained in the top position for over 2 years. This prompted many record labels to take notice. One label in particular fit perfectly with the bands vision, and in 2005 Threat Signal inked a deal with Nuclear Blast Records.

Threat Signal’s debut album ‘Under Reprisal’ was recorded with producer Christian Olde Wolbers (Fear Factory/Arkaea). Veteran mixer Tue Madsen added the final touches to the album and it was released internationally in August 2006. Embraced by fans and critics, perhaps the most meaningful praise for the album came in the form of the Canadian Recording of the Year award bestowed upon the band in their hometown at the 2006 Hamilton Music Awards.

After supporting Under Reprisal on the road for over 2 years, Threat Signal entered the studio in November 2008. They recorded their second album ‘Vigilance’ with vocalist Jon Howard taking on the role of producer. Fellow Canadian Greg Reely was chosen to mix and master the album, and it was released on Nuclear Blast Records September 8th 2009.

Arjen Lucassen has created yet another new prog rock project GUILT MACHINE. The band released ON THIS PERFECT DAY September 29th on Mascot Records USA. The album was released in three formats. Regular Edition of CD in jewel case, Special edition of CD/DVD Digipak and a limited edition CD/DVD Digibook.

As AYREON fans have come to expect from Arjen, the music of GUILT MACHINE ranges from dark and heavy to atmospheric and melancholic. But GUILT MACHINE introduces some new twists as well, particularly when it comes to the vocals. Rather than putting together an ensemble cast of vocalists from the prog, rock and metal scene, Arjen has enlisted the talents of a single alternative rock vocalist, Jasper Steverlinck.

Rather than the explicit storyline you would expect in an AYREON release, the songs of GUILT MACHINE revolve around a central theme. Instead of looking outward into a world of fantasy or science fiction, the songs look inward, exploring the destructive psychology of guilt, regret and the darkest form of secret — the secrets we hide from ourselves.

Despite these differences, GUILT MACHINE still has much in common with AYREON. The songs are mainly long, "epic" tracks that feature dynamic contrasts between softer, dreamy sections and powerful, heavy passages. There are intricate harmonies, complex rhythms, soaring melodies, and an eclectic selection of instruments — all what you'd expect from an AYREON release.

Exclusive Interview with Francine Boucher of Echoes of Eternity

If an echo is the repetition of a sound caused by the reflection of sound waves, what are musicians but pilgrims for eternity?

For guitarist / songwriter Brandon S. Patton, recruiting the many talents of various self-taught resident-musicians in Canada, South Carolina, and Japan who would become his bandmates in ECHOES OF ETERNITY seemed to have come together effortlessly. Having played on & off in various death metal projects with drummer Kirk Carrison since October 1993, Patton proposed the idea of a female-fronted melodic band in September 2004 and shortly thereafter, both Patton and Carrison relocated to one of the best-known epicenters of music: Los Angeles. Once there, the songwriting began and Patton recruited vocalist Francine Boucher to join the ranks. Bassist Duane Cowan joined a few months later and ECHOES OF ETERNITY was complete.

As Shadows Burn is the 2nd studio album by the band and this is our exclusive interview with front woman Francine Boucher.

Act III: Life and Death is the second full-length studio album by The Dear Hunter, released on June 23, 2009. According to lead vocalist Casey Crescenzo, it is the third part of a six-act story, following the original in 2006, Act I: The Lake South, the River North, and 2007's Act II: The Meaning of, and All Things Regarding Ms. Leading. The album was produced by Crescenzo and Andy Wildrick in the band's own studio in Providence, Rhode Island, with a number of musicians making guest appearances.

As of July 1, 2009, the album had peaked on the Billboard 200 at #182 (the first time a Dear Hunter album ever cracked the top 200), #14 on the Billboard Top Heatseakers, and #31 on Top Independent Albums.

Interview with Z Rokk of Automatic Static

Z Rokk, Singer/songwriter, guitarist for Automatic Static was the guitar player for Simon Says on Hollywood Records back in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. After the disbanding of Simon Says in 2002, Z pursued his education and earned a BA in Political Science from CSU Sacramento. He pursued Law school and was accepted to McGeorge Law School in Sacramento.

After realizing that music was where he wanted to be and not the law, Z started Automatic Static by himself as a project in a small one-bedroom apartment in downtown Sacramento. After recording and writing for a year or so, Z started to play live shows with friends and musicians around Sacramento filling in the line up.

Being a huge Nirvana fan Z decided that a simple 3 piece would be a great tight group to rock with as he was handling both guitar and vocals himself. He recruited friends and long time local Sacramento musicians Matt (tone factory) on Bass and Kevin, drums. Together they form the wall of sound that is Automatic Static. After touring all over the West coast many times over they are ready to release their new album “The Murder of California.”

Exclusive Interview With Lips of Anvil!

The story of ANVIL goes back to the early roots of Heavy Metal. ANVIL was a true pioneer of this genre of music beginning their career in the late 70’s. They began recording albums in 1981 with their debut album called Hard and Heavy. It was well received in England where they ended up playing some of the worlds most revered rock festivals, The Monsters of Rock and Reading Festivals.

The band recorded two albums with producer Chris Tsangarides called Metal on Metal and Forged in Fire, which remain as classic albums to this day. The band went on to tour with Motorhead in the United Kingdom. ANVIL also played in Japan as a headliner in 1983 and then on a massive festival circuit with Michael Shenker Group, Scorpions, Whitesnake and Bon Jovi in 1984 at the Super Rock festival series. This was the first festivals of this type ever held in Japan. ANVIL has continued working very hard producing albums on a regular basis and has never given up their dream.

They have recorded 13 studio albums to date and are currently looking for distribution for the newest cd appropriately titled This is Thirteen. The album was recorded in England with producer Chris Tsangarides and truly ventures back with a vengeance to the classic ANVIL sound. In recent years ANVIL has been fortunate enough to get evolved with a very special friend Sacha Gervasi who is currently directing and executively producing a docudrama about the bands real life history in real time. There is incredible footage of actual experiences touring and recording in the past 2 years. Sacha is known for his great work with Steven Spielberg on the movie Terminal, staring Tom Hanks.

The ANVIL movie debuted at the prestigious Sundance Festival in January 2008. People love this band when they learn about their incredible tenacity and dedication to their music. It comes out in the live performance so intensely it is a truly overwhelming experience. Something not to be overlooked or missed.

A few short years have seen the release of two highly acclaimed EP’s, garnered both local and national media attention, received radio play in one of the most skeptical markets and shared the stage with several national acts. Ace Frehley is finally ready to add a new exclamation point to his celebrated career. For the first time in nearly 20 years, the legendary guitarist has concocted an explosive new solo effort. Exclusive Interview with Hugo Ferreira of Tantric

Mind Control is the fourth album from the band Tantric, and was released on August 4, 2009. The album was recorded in March of 2009 with producer Brett Hestla, former touring bassist for Creed. The first single was the title track, "Mind Control".

Mind Control is the second release with the current line up. Singer Hugo Ferreira, the only remaining original member of the group, talks exclusively to Rock My Monkey about all things Mind Control and Tantric.

The CD features songs previously released on the 2006 Paris Keeling CD "End of Ride" along with bonus tracks and remixes. The CD features the renowned vocal talents of Kelly Keeling (Baton Rouge, Michael Schenker Group, Blue Murder, Carmine Appice's Guitar Zeus, King Kobra, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, O'2L) and guitarist Marty Paris (The Marty Paris Band, Permanent Reverse) as well as celebrity musicians' performances by Don Dokken, Carmine Appice, George Lynch, Al Pitrelli, Erik Norlander, and Shane Gaalaas. Along with Paris and Keeling, core band members consist of Rick van Benschoten, Matt Goeke, Gintas Janusonis with additional performances by Nate Howell, and The Aevia Trio featuring Diane Cox, Maud Kelley, and Juli Roach. The collaboration between Paris and Keeling began several years ago with the culmination of their songwriting styles blossoming into melodic rock political and relationship-based songs.

Patrick Loisel of Augury

AUGURY is a relatively new name in Montréal’s musical landscape, yet the very idea of the band was in the air since the musicians met in 1997. But serious stuff began in the winter of 2001/2002 when lead/classical guitarist Mathieu Marcotte left his band Spasme and started auditioning a string of drummers to seriously start a complete outfit. Shortly after, he was joined by soprano vocalist Arianne Fleury and demented bass wizard Dominic “Forest” Lapointe and started to jam complete songs.

In the mean time, vocalist Patrick Loisel had pledged to join and, in February 2002, took a hiatus left his outfit Kralizec to become the band’s other lead guitarist as well. In June of 2002, former Adenine’s drummer Mathieu Groulx completed the line-up and helped the band shape their first six songs and play its first show. However, lack of time and different musical tastes led him to depart Augury.

For a few months, the drummer-less outfit spent time writing more songs, focusing on strings instruments arrangements. Then, to the relief of everyone, the final missing piece fell in the puzzle as drummer Étienne Gallo took over the seat. After months of arranging and rehearsing the songs, AUGURY finally commit their work into an album. Concealed was recorded by Yannick St-Amand and mixed by Jean-François Dagenais.

Burton C Bell of Fear Factory

A few weeks ago I did an interview with Raymond Herrera. We were then contacted and asked if we could give Burton C Bell his chance to answer to some of the things said in our interview with Raymond. We are always open to letting both sides of a dispute speak, but we want to make it clear that we take no sides. We are fans of all sides of this debate. Our goal is to get the facts out in hopes that it can somehow lead to resolution.

Burton wanted to make a public statement, so I have transcribed that portion.
"Mark, before I go off on all the Comments and everything I'd like to make an official statement. First of all thank you for letting me do this statement and I appreciate your time Mark. First of all I want to cut through a lot of the confusion about one issue since it really will be part of every answer. I have not made a public statement about it, not wanting to air dirty laundry, but I have been forced to correct certain misstatements by Raymond and Christian. The fact that I have not worked with Raymond and Christian for the past 3 years as Fear Factory is for this one reason. Is that I did not want to be involved with their manager. Her name is Christy Priske and She happens to be Christian's wife. During the Transgression mixing session her and Raymond started a love affair that lasted for a couple years. As manager of Fear Factory this was completely unacceptable to me."

Ben Huggins of Galactic Cowboys

GALACTIC COWBOYS, the heavy-hitting Houston, Texas band responsible for such classic albums as "Space In Your Face", "Machine Fish", and "At the End of the Day", will reunite this August for three concert performances only in the group's home state — in Houston, Dallas, and Austin.

GALACTIC COWBOYS' classic lineup of Monty Colvin (bass), Alan Doss (drums), Ben Huggins (vocals), and Wally Farkas (guitar) will hit the stage on August 13, August 14 and August 15.
