While they're still tinkering away with the early access release of Moonlighter 2, at the Future Games Show Spring Showcase they revealed another <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/best-roguelike-games-pc">roguelike</a> entirely: ReVamp, a tower defence spin on the genre that pits you as Dracula himself protecting his castle.

Video games are such funny things, because I think if you were to tell someone unfamiliar with them that there is genuine enjoyment to be had in pushing some blocks around in a virtual space they'd look at you as if you'd told them there's genuine enjoyment to be hand in pushing some blocks around in a virtual space. And yet it's true! It's one of the classic <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/the-best-puzzle-games">puzzle</a> game genres, going way back to 1982 with Sokoban. And here we are now, many years later, with a new entry to the genre in the form of Hazard Pay, a dystopian take that sees you cleaning up mysterious messes in secret labs.

<a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/subnautica">Subnautica</a> probably wouldn't be the beloved ocean exploration/survival crafting game that it is without its underwater base building, so of course it's no surprise that it's returning for the impending sequel. But being a sequel, it of course can't just be the same thing with a new coat of paint slapped on, and in a dev log some of the improvements of base building in <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/subnautica-2">Subnautica 2</a> were put on display.

I think that genres, particularly in the realm of games, are often more used as marketing tools than signifiers of the contents therewithin. Still! Genre labels are a useful thing to quickly ascertain the thing you're doing in a game. You know you'll be shooting, and extracting something, even if it technically isn't that simple in practice, but you get the gist. <p>With the caveat that I am no Atticus Finch-esque legal expert or even a Louis Tully-grade bumbler, I find Valve's rebuttal to be a mixture of whataboutery and tactical mitigation, with a couple of fair points. It basically sidesteps what I think is the lawsuit's most important argument &ndash; that lootbox mechanics are fundamentally manipulative. Many moons ago, <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/mewgenics">Mewgenics</a> developer Edmund McMillen successfully lured the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals into developing <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/beating-the-meat-super-tofu-boy">a vegan parody version of Super Meat Boy</a>, Team Meat's gut-slathered 2D platformer. Team Meat responded by triumphantly adding a spoof vegan character to Super Meat Boy, the puny and crater-eyed <a href="https://supermeatboy.fandom.com/wiki/Tofu_Boy">Tofu Boy</a>. As McMillen himself <a href="https://x.com/edmundmcmillen/status/1720308380001305035">recently recalled on MechaMusk.com</a>, "I personally trolled the peta forums for months seeding info about this 'ground breaking new indie game coming out soon that must be stopped!; I never thought they would actually take the bait but it was amazing to see and a very fun exchange."

Well, McMillen and PETA are at it again. PETA have <a href="https://x.com/peta/status/2031756899465461956">just released a video</a> honouring a character in Mewgenics, which very much isn't a game that promotes the ethical treatment of animals, or of beings in general.</p>

Spectrum48's Philip Sinclair has spent 15 years rewilding a field, "rewilding" being a process of restoring ecosystems to something like a state of 'natural' equilibrium. Now, he's making a videogame about it. That game is Grow Wild, which is <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfTjFQwsLq0jkDMaMiDL5gZnMcc65-6PLLYgRLkUp1nBTqaFQ/viewform">currently accepting playtest sign-ups</a>. It sees you restoring biomes across the globe, touching down on sickly square arcadias like an avenging angel equipped with a trowel, magnifying glass, and probably some tartan-pattern slippers, out of shot.</p>
<p>It makes me think a little of Viva Pinata, but it's populated by representations of non-digital creatures, flowers and trees with convincing growth cycles. There are some lovely 'time lapse' shots in the trailer, below.

Years ago I was lost in the Shaded Woods, a foggy forest full of moaning trees. I didn't have enough health to fight the invisible backstabbing murder ghosts, and every time I ran away from the spooky sound of their footsteps, I got lost in the fog all over again.

That's when a hacker invaded and injected me with hundreds of cursed swords, corrupting my save file and dooming <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/dark-souls-ii">Dark Souls 2</a> to crash over and over.
</p>
<p>
It was deep magic, more powerful than any game system or lore, overwhelming the code itself. To uncurse myself, I'd have to embrace the darkness and download cheat tools too.

After 2024&rsquo;s original Core Ultra 200S family went for efficiency gains at the cost of frame-punching game power, these 200S Plus chips are once again tuned more for straight performance, which sounds good to me. I like lower electricity bills and heat generation as much as the next hardware editor, and was <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/intel-bets-on-efficiency-with-the-power-sipping-core-ultra-200s-series">fairly optimistic</a> about that initial batch of Core Ultras at first, but they <a href="https://www.eurogamer.net/digitalfoundry-2024-intel-core-ultra-9-285k-ultra-5-245k-review?page=3">ended up so slow and dull</a> it essentially put me off writing about CPUs for a year and a half.</p>
<p>Say hello, then, to the Core Ultra 7 270K Plus and Core Ultra 250K Plus, which&rsquo;ll be out on March 26th 2026 at $299 and $199 respectively. There&rsquo;ll also be slightly cheaper KF variants, without integrated graphics, for each. Intel VP Robert Hallock says these will be the "fastest desktop gaming processors Intel has ever built," which they&rsquo;ll need to be &ndash; while the blue team have been fiddling with efficiency, AMD&rsquo;s 3D V-Cache tech has ran away with the gaming advantage, especially on the outstandingly quick <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/best-cpu-for-gaming#best-overall">Ryzen 7 9800X3D</a>.</p>

A long time ago in a games industry far, far away, a team of LucasArts developers were making a multiplayer first-person shooter called Star Wars: First Assault. Slated to release on console in summer 2013, it was set in the original Star Wars era with Stormtroopers, Rebels, objective modes, team deathmatch, and maps on Tatooine and Bespin. It was also a stealth <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/have-you-played-star-wars-battlefront">Star Wars: Battlefront</a> revival project, pitched well before <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/star-wars-battlefront">the EA DICE reboot</a>. The devs envisaged a second game in 2014, offering vehicles and larger maps, followed by a full-blown official new Battlefront in 2015, complete with a singleplayer campaign and space dogfights. 
</p>
<p>
According to some sources I spoke to at the time, the First Assault beta was only $10,000 in certification fees away from launching on Xbox Live in late 2012. But then, Disney <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/rip-lucasarts-a-personal-obituary">blew up LucasArts like Alderaan</a> and cancelled a swathe of Star Wars games, including the once-feted <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/star-wars-1313">Star Wars 1313</a>. First Assault never got its beta. Until now, sort of. A team of Battlefront modders including <a href="https://www.patreon.com/posts/star-wars-first-152459027">iamashaymin</a> have finally gotten an ancient, leaked First Assault build working on a PC server. Many Bothans died to bring us this information.

Never's End is the new strategy <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/best-rpgs">RPG</a> from <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/former-destiny-and-final-fantasy-devs-reveal-soul-stealing-tactics-rpg-nevers-end">a former Destiny developer</a> in which you lead a party of possessed villagers against a ravening (yet cuddly) tide of undead. At a glance, it's an elegantly muted <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/final-fantasy-tactics">Final Fantasy Tactics</a>, with doll-sized characters on a spinnable grid-based map. In the hands, it's surprisingly reminiscent of Larian's <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/divinity-original-sin">Divinity: Original Sin</a> games, with a nerdy application of thermodynamics that lets you transform each map into a vortex of mist, flame and increasingly naked skeletons.

It's no secret that those shadowy guys with all the money to fund games generally don't have much interest in narrative heavy, singleplayer games. And yet even still, games like <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/dispatch">Dispatch</a> continue to do <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/why-is-superhero-comedy-dispatch-a-million-selling-success-story-it-could-be-that-weekly-release-schedule">very well for themselves</a>. Even still, for developer AdHoc Studio, the funding process doesn't sound like it was an easy one, but in their self-admitted "arrogance and stupidity," they went on to make it anyway.

Video games are weird little things. It's pretty rare for films to get scrapped part way through production, even if these days some production companies opt to use even finished projects as tax write offs. But games can frequently get canned, disappear for a bit, and even return after many years of silence. Enter <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/sin-reloaded">SiN Reloaded</a>, the Nightdive-made remaster of the classic boomer <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/best-fps-games">shooter</a>, that is alive once more!

<p>"He was basically the boogeyman," Pagliarulo says. "He was the evil bad guy. You didn&rsquo;t know where he was or even what he looked like, but you knew he was out there. I&rsquo;m 10 years old, and I know this name."</p>
<p>Decades later, as Bethesda Game Studios shifted into full production on <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/fallout-4">Fallout 4</a>, Pagliarulo drew on those memories to bring a post-apocalyptic Boston to life. "The game was missing something, as far as one of the overall themes," he says. "I remember having a conversation with Todd Howard that there should be this overriding sense of paranoia that people have, and they don&rsquo;t know who to trust."</p>

<a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/slay-the-spire-2">Slay The Spire 2</a> launched into early access last week to the tune of over half a million Steam concurrents, which isn't too shabby for a game with placeholder art <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/slay-the-spire-2s-placeholder-art-should-be-a-lesson-to-all-the-developers-caught-up-in-ai-generated-nonsense">that looks like it was knocked up in MS Paint</a>. I played a couple runs of the roguelike deckbuilder this weekend, and experienced such positive emotions as Wait, Doesn't This Basically Break The Game? Delightfully Devilish, Seymour and Oh, I Forgot I Had That Potion.

I wouldn't say I'm bowled over, mind. The original <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/slay-the-spire">Slay The Spire</a> precipitated a Cambrian explosion of roguelite or <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/best-roguelike-games-pc">roguelike</a> deckbuilders. The sequel has to stand apart from both its predecessor and from all the games Spire has in-Spired, <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/monster-train-might-be-the-best-deckbuilder-since-slay-the-spire">like Monster Train</a>. While not without precedent, the co-op functionality could be its silver bullet. So it's just as well that the game's first round of patches are targetting problems with multiplayer.

Upon <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/marathon">Marathon</a>'s launch earlier this week, Bungie revealed a pair of in-game currencies that you have to use to unlock various bits. One is called SILK, which you can earn through play and is used to unlock rewards in rewards passes. The other is LUX, a premium currency you have to spend real, cold, hard cash on to get, though its sole purpose is for cosmetics. However, much like all in-game currencies that cost real-world money, the amount you can buy and the amount it costs to buy cosmetics didn't line up, leading to a good bit of pushback that has resulted in Bungie simply giving you more bang for your buck.

<p><a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/whiskerwood">Whiskerwood</a> has made it undeniable: I have the opposite of a speedrunning problem. Give me a stretch of land, a supply of loyal builders, and a free hand to go nuts building some impressive metropolis, and I will, within mere dozens of hours, produce a small, haphazard hamlet reluctantly beginning to flirt with ironmaking. Rome was not built in a day. If I'd had my way, it still wouldn't be.</p>
<p>Whiskerwood, to my pleasant surprise, does not hold this against me. It's most obviously reminiscent of <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/timberborn">Timberborn</a>, and its premise recalls <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/sid-meiers-colonization">Colonization</a>, of all things, as your "Whiskers" build a colony for the "Claws", who are largely absentee (there are no cats in America) but extract a regular toll of goods as taxation. You'd assume they quickly ramp up the pressure and force the issue because games are Like That. The real pressure, though, is a much more interesting model of colonialism, and how even absent of political context, that kind of economic arrangement can constrain and shape a town.</p>

Where did those years go? I certainly didn't allow them to go anywhere! Originally slated for release in 2022, it was eventually delayed into 2023, <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/capcom-delays-pragmata-indefinitely">then indefinitely</a>, before Capcom finally <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/pragmata-still-exists-and-capcom-say-the-sci-fi-action-game-is-coming-in-2026-for-real-this-time">locked in a 2026 release date</a>. Which it will not be making, technically, as while it was originally slated to launch on April 24th, it'll no longer be doing so&hellip; because it's coming out earlier. There is no greater source of tepid rage than when I see a game, I buy it, I proceed to download it, and it tells me it needs to take up one billion gigabytes of my hard drive space (NB: one billion is an exaggeration). It fills every corner of my being with a potent darkness, and I would like it to stop. This is a feeling many had with <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/helldivers">Helldivers</a> and its ludicrously large 154GB install size, leading to a <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/helldivers-2-install-size-reduction-effort-yields-131gb-in-cuts-and-you-can-try-the-slim-build-right-now">test build of the game</a> to be released by Arrowhead last year knocking it way down to only 23GB in size. And now, after some testing, this build will be available to everyone!

What began as a simple search, a box-checking exercise to complete the last of Requiem&rsquo;s optional challenges, has since shredded nerves (and driven at least two RPS guides writers into frazzled despair) as the puzzle revealed itself an almost sadistically opaque game of Simon Says, where Simon doesn&rsquo;t actually say anything. He wants you to do something with that severed arm, though.</p>
<p>Earlier this week, however, the code was cracked, seemingly after a Pokemon card YouTuber stumbled into the solution by accident. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU6KsEu1jBA">Gengar Collects</a>, whose videos typically involve showing off colourful paper rectangles rather than borrowing creepy dolls from flesh monsters, is now widely credited with 'discovering' the requisite steps through sheer luck, with the precise details <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/residentevil/comments/1rj0cih/re9_final_puzzle_solved_lore_explanation/">confirmed hours later</a> by dataminers. It seems the Japanese version of Capcom's new <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/the-best-horror-games">horror game</a> doesn't feature any blood and guts in certain scenes, in a bid to appease the country's regulators.

Instead it has&hellip; anomalous pools of shadow. Hideous darkness spilling from the cleaved torsos of ostensible cadavers. The same darkness lurks within you and I. What fools we were, to ever think ourselves meat. We are but the place where the light isn't. Umbral puppets. Gabbling event horizons. Arigatou gozaimasu, Capcom! I feel much better now.

Oh, it adds a number of handy features like the option to advance time by waiting, toggle walking via key press, and extra stealth kill animations.</p>

In the short term, Sony will no longer publish a PC port of <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/ghost-of-yotei">Ghost of Y&omacr;tei</a>, sequel to windblown action samurai game Ghost of Tsushima.

<p>Both The Division 2's original looting mechanics and its 100% apolitical regime change storyline now feel to me like the products of a different universe, though Ubisoft have been updating the game and releasing new stuff for it throughout. It could be that I'm being a tad dramatic here, but Fortnite, and particularly Roblox, might be two of the most annoying things to happen to games. Today, presumably in pursuit of infinite growth, EA announced a pair of Things you can now expect to see in <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/the-sims-4">The Sims 4</a>, a new Sims Maker Program and Sims 4 Marketplace.

<p>The on-board robots are busy feeding spare components to the engine, as they seek to maintain acceleration towards some mysterious destination. Among the first things I did in <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/esoteric-ebb">Esoteric Ebb</a> was spectacularly injure myself by posing a question to a kobold guard that was actually a statement. To whit, "you are a kobold." My Dexterity hollered at me to stave off embarrassment with a witty follow-up, but I failed the associated dice roll and almost bit my own tongue off. 
</p>
<p>
"Use this to your advantage," growled my Strength stat. "Intimidate him with your life's liquid." So I spat blood through my visor, all over the kobold's feet. "He is baffled," observed my Wisdom. "Your actions have truly made a mark upon his dark soul." Later, the kobold and I agreed - again via dice roll - that neither of us like the taste of milk, which somehow unlocked a quest to become a milkman. Apparently, the money's decent.

The latest that's caught my eye is a substantial overhaul of Gerry and co's hangout Kaer Morhen, with a veteran modder having taken on the task of fleshing out the area to match its depiction in the first Witcher game.</p>

"We&rsquo;d drive onto the MGM lot, and I&rsquo;d see coin-op games through the window of one office. 'That&rsquo;s Mr Spielberg&rsquo;s office,' my dad would say. I remember thinking, 'Wow - he gets to make movies and play games. That&rsquo;s the life."</p>
<p>Years later, Bell found himself sitting in an LA office while the legendary director gave him notes. Modelers around them were working on outrageously expensive workstations, painstakingly creating mockups for <a href="https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/games/jurassic-park">Jurassic Park</a> sequels. But there were no dinosaurs on Bell's screen, not even a tiny Compsognathus or a dinky little Anchiornis. Bell was showing Spielberg a cutscene packed with hellish creatures, occultish symbols, and the tastefully wood-panelled walls of a sprawling gothic manor.</p>
<p>That's because Bell wasn't part of DreamWorks Pictures, Spielberg's movie studio, but DreamWorks Interactive, the game development studio Spielberg founded in 1995. He was the producer on the small team making Clive Barker's Undying, a first-person horror shooter made in collaboration with the author who created Hellraiser and Candyman.</p>
<p>Last month Clive Barker's Undying celebrated its 25th anniversary and while its makers would be the first to say it wasn't a shooter that changed the direction of the games industry, they will tell you that the project was a true labour of love.</p>
<p>They will also tell you that Clive Barker was really quite insistent that they make protagonist Patrick Galloway more fuckable.</p>

The game's just had Enigma DRM quietly pulled from it, following a recent swap to that  software from Devuvo DRM which reportedly had an impact on how well the Resi 4 Remake ran.</p>
