Well, yardbirds, somebody's wanting a challenge! Y'see, awhile back, I listed the real names of some Sixties superstars, and asked you to match 'em up against their stage names.
Apparently, a couple of our readers wanted to take a look at them again, so, since we have some new folks gazin' at this very same page right now, I figured "why not just repeat the post for 'em?" Soooo, here we go:

I JUST FED MY BLOG THIS MORNIN', A-AN' ... IT ... (geewhiz!)... SEEMED HEALTHY .... Actually, I couldn't get my blog up and runnin' for awhile, but I took it to the vet (veteran blog-fixer) who told me it had too much exposure to the secret ingredient in Mozilla®, which caused its internal organ(ization) to shut down temporarily. Finally, after a shot of IE8, it's back to normal!
Since I'd just finished a decent fish dinner at the local Captain D's, I can truthfully say, COD BLESS THAT VET! Now ... where were we (or were we goin' anywhere with this?)? OH, yeah ... Gettin' the gears greased to shift this whole thing into overdrive within the next couple/three clicks. That's right ... we're gonna rollback Prices (as well as the rest of the Animals), turn back the Clarks (Dave's group), and wish upon a Starr (on fresh Lennon, no less ... not to mention those other two guys) when we thunder through the creatively fab years from mid-'50's to mid-70's.

FROM THE CAVERN

They were "four lads who shook the world" ... or so says the sign on Mathew Street in Liverpool -- nicknamed Beatle Street for obvious reasons: Not only is it the home of The Cavern (and everyone knows by now that The Fab Four made the original Club their sound stage, right?) but also Lennon's Bar and other Beatleific spots.
The original Cavern (which was torn down back in '73 for work on the Merseyrail underground rail loop), natch, was where every Mersey band worth its salt would play (in fact, between '60 and '62, The Beatles played there 292 times! Their spot was then taken over by The Hollies. The Fab Four had just signed with Polydor Records and had "graduated" from The Cavern). Soon, acts from all across England were eager to perform there!
Those included a band in 1966 called Bluesology, which featured a young pianist called Reginald Dwight -- later to be known as Elton John!

In 1984, the Club was rebuilt, using many of the bricks from the old one, and, today, regularly features about 40 different bands per week. Spencer Hannabuss, leader and songwriter/bassist for the popular UK band, The Fore (who played the Club regularly), tells me of "the legend": Apparently, there's a door in the ladies' washroom that leads to the remnants of the original club!

DIDJA KNOW THAT ...

Ringo apparently played the Cavern for the first time in 1957? He was with a band called "The Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group". He was followed, a week later, by a skiffle band called 'The Quarrymen"

The last band to play the original Cavern (just days before it closed) was the Dutch group, Focus? They had a hit with the song Hocus Pocus in 1971.

The date recognized as the start of the British rock era (one that climaxed with The British Invasion) was May 25th 1960, when Rory Storm and the Hurricanes (with Ringo Starr on drums) opened the first beat night sessions at the Cavern?

So, if ya ever get a chance to visit the most famous musical city in the world (the 'Pool,. of course!), you've just gotta take in at least one or two shows at The Cavern! Believe me, it's gonna be an event you'll remember for a lifetime!!

Lessons from A Guitar

I ran this post a long while back, but I've been asked to repeat it here and on The Mouse Clique. And whilst I'm compiling new material for the blogs, I thought it'd be a good way to officially start the 2012 edition of both blogs:

Years ago, when I was just barely into my teens, my dad came home from work carrying a battered, old guitar. He knew I wanted to learn to play one – I’d seen folk groups, country acts – even some new group called “The Beatles” playing them, and it looked like so much fun. In fact, while these performers were on TV, I’d watch carefully for the close-up shots, and (using a baseball bat as a “guitar”) I’d mimic their fingering, position of the chords and timing. (PS Thanks to ultracool Kenny Hogan for the use of the pic on your left. Other than the shirt, hair and face, the kid looks just like me! lol)

When he gave me the acoustic guitar, I sat down and, propping it up on my knee, began to position my fingers on the neck, just as I had seen the performers do. Certainly, I was going to be the next Elvis. But he did something that I’ll remember to my dying day: He took a big, calloused hand, put it over the fingerboard and stopped me from playing! Then he said, “Son, wait a minute. Let me tell you a little story:

You see, Life’s a lot like that old guitar you’ve got, especially when it’s time to pay your dues. And, just like the sounds you can make on that guitar, the ones you make in life is entirely up to you. We can’t stop you from framming away at it like an off-tune madman any more than we can stop you from playing beautiful music. When you get to be an adult, it’s going to be the same thing when you’re ‘out there’ in the real world. Nobody can stop you; it’s your choice as to what type of ‘music’ you give them.

Now, you see those strings, and how you’re holding them down with your fingertips? Each note is meant to create harmony with each other. That's your goal in life, son … learn to place each thing you do …each step you take … so it’ll be in harmony with mankind. Otherwise, just like with the guitar, you’re gonna make such a noise that nobody’ll want to hear you. ”I listened intently; this was good stuff! Then he continued,“ And, by and by, you’ll learn how to sing with that guitar – maybe even write a few tunes yourself.

When you do, remember that a simple tune does better when the words are from the heart. Make them easy for people to learn … to keep in their mind. And you’re painting a picture with each one. Son, remember to do the same thing in your everyday doings, and you’ll make friends and be happier than you ever thought.

And that ‘song’ that you sing … the one you show everyday in your actions … will be the one that’ll go ‘number one’ with your friends and others. Just leave the lyrics open to your brother’s and sister’s point of view, and they’ll be humming that song long after you’ve gone.

Now … let’s hear you play …”

Rock Reunions Really Rumours ...

GETTING BACK TO ROCK: All around the airwaves, the buzz has been that certain legendary bands are preparing to reunite for some gigs in 2012.
Well, if you're one who's been hoping it'll happen, I sort of hate to burst your bubble, but here's the truth about it all:

The Who -- or Roger and Pete with "name" backing musicians -- have been said to be working on a 50th Anniversary reunion for the 2012 Olympics. But, with Daltrey on a roll with his solo work and Townshend's tinnitus, it's just not gonna happen.

The surviving members of Pink Floyd were reported by the UK's London Evening Standard as re-forming for the Olympics. Apparently, an "insider" gave them the info -- but, according to David Gilmour (vocalist/guitarist for the band), ""There is no truth in the media speculation that Pink Floyd are reuniting."

Now, there is a bit of truth to the band, Van Halen, coming back together for a reunion tour and album. According to their Facebook® page, tickets will be going on sale for their 2012 tour in mid-February. The talk about a VH reunion was fueled by a show they did on 5 January at a small club in New York City -- a show that introduced one of the songs from a new album, which will be called A Different Kind of Truth.

One of the most anticipated reunions was that of the original Creedence Clearwater Revival. This was hinted at by John Fogerty (lead singer and guitarist for the band) in a July interview.
But ...
sadly, it's just a wish; John and the surviving members (Doug Clifford - drums, Stu Cook - bass) have been at odds since the band broke apart in 1972 (in fact, John, allegedly, even refused to visit and perform one last time for his dying brother, Tom [rhythm guitarist for the band]). Doug and Stu claims that Fogerty had a harsh ego that pushed the rest of them around during their later years. According to Clifford, ""Leopards don't change their spots. This is just an image-polishing exercise by John. It (a reunion) might have been a nice idea 20 years ago, but it's too late."

BEYOND THE ROCK wants to take this time to congratulate Beyonce and her husband, rap star Jay-Z on the birth of their daughter, Blue Ivy Carter this past Saturday. Early this morning, mom (who, incidentally, gave birth naturally with no complications) and baby left Lenox Hill Hospital for home.
Meanwhile, Jay-Z has written and recorded a tribute to his little angel! Glory actually includes the baby's cries on the track ...

Latest Classic-Rock News 8 Jan 12

Congratulations to the 2011 electees into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame: Harry Belafonte, the Crew Cuts, the Doobie Brothers, Duane Eddy, Percy Faith, Ferrante & Teicher, Al Green, Tony Orlando & Dawn, the Osmonds (including Donnie & Marie), Dolly Parton, the Pointer Sisters and Bruce Springsteen. Nominees for the 2012 class will be announced next month.

Bob Weston, guitarist with Fleetwood Mac from 1972 to 1974 (the "Penguin" and "Mystery To Me" albums), was found dead in his London home of a gastrointestinal hemorrhage this past Tuesday. He was fired from the band by Mick Fleetwood in 1974, allegedly after an affair with Mick's wife. Bob also played with Long John Baldry and Bob Welch, among others.

Etta James was released from a Southern California hospital this past Thursday and is said to be in "stable" condition at her Riverside, California home. The 73 year-old continues to suffer from leukemia and dementia.

Condolences to Contours member Joe Billingslea, whose 39 year-old son was shot to death during a fight at a Detroit strip club on New Year's Day. Friends tried to rush him to a hospital and were involved in a traffic accident. Eventually an ambulance got him to the hospital, where he died.
Also, our condolences to Stevie Nicks, whose mother, Barbara, died December 28 of pneumonia in Arizona. She was 84.

Robert Lee Dickey, who performed with his cousin James as James & Bobby Purify, died on 29 December in Tallahassee, Florida. He was 72. The Florida duo charted eight times from 1966 to 1968, most notably with "I'm Your Puppet" (#6-1966) and "Shake A Tail Feather" (#25-1967). Robert was replaced for health reasons by Buddy Grubbs (for one record) and by Ben Moore (permanently) in 1971. Bobby went on to work as supervisor for the custodial crew at the Tallahassee Police Department and became a Deacon in his church.

God and The Baby-Boomer

Now, some of you might wonder where I'm gonna go with this post, considering the heading and pic to your left.
But, hey ... let's face it: Our generation -- the "baby-boomer" group -- did more to bring the message of Jesus Christ to the public than probably any other generation in the Twentieth Century!

"Oooookay, bald bird ... ya got any facts to back that up??"

Plenty:

If you remember, by early 1964 we'd lost our President, John F. Kennedy, to an assassin's bullet. At the same time, we were at the tail-end of the euphoric, post-World-War era and looking down the barrel at a possible third world war with the Soviet Union and China.
And, whilst The Beatles and the British Invasion came along and diverted our minds -- in fact, gave us all a morale boost -- we still couldn't shake the obvious: "The Bomb" was still a distinct possibility (for you younger readers, it meant that, though their outer actions wore a thin disguise of apathy, the Communist regimes were still threatening us with their nuclear arsenal.

Then, as we were dealing with that, our attention -- and worry -- was turned to a little Southeast Asian country called South Vietnam. The still-new President Lyndon Johnson increased our involvement as words like Tet Offensive, My Lai and Mekong Delta began appearing in our newspaper every day. News anchormen like Walter Cronkite, David Brinkley and others would start out their broadcasts with the latest body-counts as will as graphic footage from the war zone.

Young people across the nation began peace marches, protests and more, trying to persuade a stubborn government that this war was bad and could be pushing us even closer to a nuclear war!
Since the governments didn't seem to listen, many of these kids turned to God with their supplications for peace. As the Sixties drew to a close, these same young people realised that, though we were still at war, this communication with God actually did clear their minds and make them feel more peaceful. And they'd finally found a purpose!

But there was something else that emerged from this thing the media coined the "Jesus Movement": a departure from the old-style, quiet and often ritualistic worship to joyous, lively and spirit-filled praise (note: of course, the "quiet ... ritualistic" didn't apply to all churches. This was used to show the difference between generational styles of confronting God). There was more emphasis, not on the "gloom-and-doom" of "last days" but on the risen Christ and the Eternal Life that awaits.

Sure, this new interest in God also brought a rise in various religious cults (I was once a member of one, btw. Thank God and my buddy John for helping me "see the light" about it eventually ...). And as many of these eventually died out, its followers returned to "mainsteam" denominations -- but with a twist: unlike before, they wanted to study the Bible independently (y'see, in cults, you're told what to read, and the verses carefully selected to validate these groups ...). Then that, coupled with what they learned in their churches-of-choice, only built a more solid foundation of belief -- one that lasts, and is instrumental in their lives, today!

OVER THE YEARS, many of those young people have held on to their beliefs so avidly that they've become ordained ministers in different denominations (in the pic, Dr. Duffy Robbins, former drummer with the popular surf-rock band, The Ho-Dads); others have become strongly involved in their churches, whilst still others are sharing their faith individually or in mission work (example: "Moulty" Moulton, former drummer and founder of the legendary band, The Barbarians). And this generation is leading a new one to understand that loving God is more than church-on-Sunday, suit-and-tie, be-quiet-in-the-pew attendance; it's a chance to show they're ALIVE 24/7/365! It's an active faith ... not passive! It's showing the SPIRIT that God has given them! And there's nothing that can stop them as long as they're "vertical" on this planet.

IIII know ... somebody's already asking "Wait ... what does all this do with rock-and-roll??" Well, plainly put, we wouldn't have rock-and-roll if not for the spiritual churches of the 1890's. Remember, their Spirit-filled services were described by sailors returning from the seas as "rockin' and rollin'"! And the swaying, dancing and clapping during their music actually did set the stage for the greatest musical phenomenon in modern history!

A Little Rock News To Start ...

Well, we made into the New Year safely ... and, though BTR has tweaked its focus just a little (remember? It's now news/views/commentary for "baby-boomers" whilst still showing a lotta R-E-S-P-E-C-T to today's generation ...), we're still in the rock bizness!
So, with that in mind, what do you say we kick this year off with a few music updates, alright??

CHANGING STATUS Since I used the title of her most famous hit, let's start this by wishing the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, happiness and success in her upcoming marriage to long-time friend "Willie" Wilkerson this summer! She said the nuptials will take place "probably in Miami".
Aretha's made an awesome comeback this year, and has shown determination in both music (a new CD, more performances [most recently, we saw her on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon) and in the tremendous weight loss -- so we all wish her and Willie a long and happy life as Mr. and Mrs.

But she's not the only one tying the knot: Aerosmith's Steven Tyler became engaged over the Christmas weekend to longtime girlfriend Erin Brady. It will be 63 year-old Steven's third marriage. Erin is 38. (PS You always call him "Steven"! For whatever reason, he does not like his name to be shortened ...)

And congrats to Rick Wakeman of the legendary musical group Yes. Awhile back, he heard his 37-year-old girlfriend repeat his band's name when he "popped the question", and they were quietly married on 14 December. (btw, they've known each other for eight years).

AND THE GRAMMY GOES TO ... The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences recently announced their Lifetime Achievement Awards, which will be given out February 11-- the day before the annual Grammy awards.

The list includes legends from various genres of this wonder we call "modern music": Diana Ross, the Allman Brothers, George Jones, the Memphis Horns, Gil Scott-Heron and Antonio Carlos Jobim will be honoured ...
as well as country/rock superstar Glen Campbell. The guitarist from Delight, Arkansas has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, and they wanted to include him whilst he can still appreciate and enjoy the honour.
Besides, he's long overdue the award, right?
By the way: Since there's a lot of positive buzz circulating about the Beach Boys (Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and founding member David Marks) getting back together for a concert tour and new CD, didja know that Glen Campbell used to be a part of the group way-back-when?? Yep ... listen to the song Dance, Dance, Dance. That's him on guitar!)

COMING UP ON 11 JANUARY, though (and this is just IMHO), is the award show that's actually the only one voted on by regular, everyday folks like us. Y'see, whilst the Grammys, Golden Globes and others are awards presented by tabulated results from industry choices, the People's Choice Awards are decided by votes tabbed by the public -- in other words, your favourites! So tune in to CBS on Wednesday night to see if any of your musical or celluloid heroes get the nod ...

AND COMING UP ON THIS BLOG: This year is a new beginning for Beyond The Rock. Not only did we change the name (formerly Rock, Rhythm and Rimshots) and retire that old cuss, The Rock Relic (now replaced with the returning Electric Eagle), but we're focusing on issues, news and commentary that apply largely to the biggest segment of society -- the baby-boomers.
We'll be increasing the number of posts per week, including more vids and feedback, and, amongst it all, also keep up with the latest happenings in classic rock -- the sounds that actually made modern music what it is today!

A Brand New Year (and Beginning)

Well, here we are in a brand new year (I think everybody's covered now, right? East Coast to West? UK? Podunk?Good ... we're set, then ...) so, for those who don't have a terrific hangover on this first day of January 2012, let's get started (the rest of you can get somebody to read it to you -- softly!):

CHANGES TO BOTH BLOGS

Remember the "resolutions" that everybody makes-and-breaks-eventually on the Big Day? Well, we're no exception -- except we won't be breaking ours (besides, y'all-add-Santa-Claus are watching me, so I've gotta be good to my word, right?).
And what "resolutions" we have to work with! First of all:

We're going to gear up both blogs up reflect the music, issues and happenings of that little group known as baby-boomers ... BUT ... we'll also be talking about stuff that all generations can use. So, if you have something you'd like to see discussed here, the lines are open (MAN, I wish I could hear that at Wal-Mart® ... just once!) -- just email me here, okay? Be sure to include an SASE for quicker response ...
Of course, we're not going to forget what brought us to the dance, right? On the TMC channel (wait ... gotta sidestep the copyrighters: "TMC" means "The Mouse Clique" blog), you'll still be reading the wit and wisdom shared with us by Uncle Lloyd, as well as new material gleaned from our emails and more; on the new "Beyond The Rock" (formerly "Rock, Rhythm and Rimshots") we'll still be covering the classic rock news and memories, including vids from days-gone-by that you (yes, you!) get to choose.
The blog posts, themselves, will be much more frequent -- in fact, we're borrowing a popular brand name here and resolve to get online to write, er, one a day (get it?? Good ... sidestepped the copyright again! ...).
And, of course, there's going to be our trademark zaniness (or reasonable facsimile thereof ...). I mean, what's life without humor, right? In fact, what's the Ice Cream without humor? Good (something)? Or that show, The Big Bang Theory (lots of [something] packed into 22 minutes)? So we'll continue it here ...

Anyway ... now that 2012 is here, let's all make the best of it, and return here in a couple of days to kick this off properly, alright??

Awhile back, I wrote an article called Whatever Happened To The Child Of Peace? ... and since this is now a "boomers" blog (though everyone's welcome to read and comment), I thought we'd inaugurate it by reprinting it here:

The summer of 1967 was one of the most vocal and radical in the history of America. Nationally, we were embroiled in political scandals, racial injustice - and a horrible war in Vietnam.
The country was firmly divided into two separate groups - Doves, who believed the war was wrong and that our military should pull out and come home, and the Hawks, who thought we should not only be fighting in Vietnam, but maybe even take it a step farther and decimate China, who was allegedly bolstering the North's manpower.
Here in America, though, thousands of young people, who were turned onto peace, love and inner guidance, were rising up in protests of the fighting. Some history books will say they were "doves", while others say they were "high on drugs and Indian music." Many of us were there, and we were simply looking at it all with logic. Is peace better than war? Love than hate? Inner guidance better than outer control?
So they began putting the pressure on Washington - from sit-ins to open-air festivals to outright marches - and, by 1969, President Nixon began feeling the pressure and reduced troop numbers. Slightly over three years later, the war was over.
In 1968, the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King resulted in widespread violence and looting - a grim climax to the years of struggle for African-American equality. Once again, young, hip whites and blacks were on the scene, united in the cause of peace. And they knew they'd have their hands full: On the one, they tried to calm nerves of both blacks and whites; on the other, they protested the inequality loudly. From the streets of LA to Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington, they took the message that Dr. King had conveyed time and again: that all people, of all races, should work together and given equal rights in this country.
The pressure eventually worked, and society slowly began to realize the importance of true, interracial brotherhood.
More important changes were made by the protesters and marchers. The voting age was finally lowered to 18, and women were beginning to be treated as more than sex objects - they were finally being viewed as equals in the marketplace, employment field and in places of authority.

New Beginnings

Hey ... sometimes, we need 'em, right?? And this blog is certainly no exception.

Here's why I'm doing this:

After years of reporting classic rock news and covering just about everything else in that genre, I've decided to expand this site to include the many other facets of baby-boomerdom. I mean, it wasn't/isn't all music ... and we're gonna cover everything else that pertains to that awesome chunk of society!

Now, that doesn't mean we'll neglect the music! In fact, far from it; you'll still be reading about acts from ABBA to ZZ Top and more. But we'll also cover issues ranging from the economy to aches and pains (hmph ... probably in the same paragraph, since one seems to cause the other), kids and grandkids, TV, politics, religion and more --

But don't expect this to be just another stodgy, opinionated blog. (I'm not a Republican, y'know ...) We're going to have some fun whilst we go through these posts!
You'll also see more vids, along with ads, useful links, rock news, pics, a few surprises ... annnnnd we're gonna keep this blog updated almost every day that ends with a "y" (I'll be 'off' on the other ones. Sorry ...).

Now, there's even more formatting ahead, to enhance the blog a bit -- so keep your eyes out for the new look and all the goodies within, come 2 January (and, yes, we'll definitely be including boomers in the UK as well ...)!!

The Page Turns ... and Beatles Facts Found

You know, this genre of ours has lasted for over fifty years, and has gone through drugs, hugs, bugs and a few mugshots ... it's rocked, shocked, shlocked and socked-it-to more Rockaholics than we can count! We've seen Presidents die, those with broken dreams live, warafterwarafterwar, legends pass and new ones take their space (but never "place"), women get more rights (and throw a few "lefts"!), 18ers get to vote and drink, our brethren of other races finally get the props they so rightfully deserve, and so many other wild events! The vanguard was THE BEATLES ... and the musical marauding hasn't stopped since ... And it never will.

RARE BEATLEFACTS FOUND!! WOW!! Talk aboutcher luck! Found some olllllld notes I made about the Fab Four way back in 1979! Along with it (now, this is weird!) was a business receipt for some gas I got -- at the time, I was driving the public, stateside version of a Sherman Tank (aka straight-drive Plymouth Belvedere). The cost for the fill-up was just under (snif!) TEN DOLLARS!
Anyway, after drying my tears, I read the info:

Remember The Beatles' tune, Not A Second Time? 'Twas on their first American LP ... bit it wasn't really a "Beatles" song as such! The tune was actually recorded by John and Ringo, with George Martin sitting in on piano!
And then there was a report of the meeting between JPG&R ... and Elvis! Contrary to reports, he was still a bit skeptical about the "moptops", although John considered him to be the one who really got teenagers into rock-n-roll!
But, when they met, Presley and the lads jammed a bit, and Elvis tried to impress them by doing the lead-in to I Feel Fine (come on, '60s guitarists... who amongst us wasn't tempted to try that lead at least once?) At that point, according to the report, John finally realized that Presley wasn't an unreachable "rock god", per se, but a normal human, like the rest of us.

I also found a scripted note (intended for an early column, apparently, considering it was Smith-Coronaed [ie, "typed"] on onion-skin paper) on which I wrote about I Am The Walrus: "John knew that the headhunters were out in droves, looking for anything 'secret', like 'drug' messages or 'Paul Is Dead' or whatever. So he intentionally set the words in some of the fades to weird phrases that could be played backwards and lead these yokels on a wild goose chase!" Yep ... I actually used the word yokel. Forgive me. I won't do it again ... here ...

JIMMY PAGE ... SKIFFLER?? You bet! And here he is, at the ripe old age of fourteen, as part of a skiffle group. Ahhh, how times have changed:

Beach Boys, Seger and More ...

Okay ... who hasn't heard the Big News yet (hint: look at the pic on your left)?

Right ... The Beach Boys (and I mean as close to the original lineup as you can get!) are reuniting!
But it's for more than a wildly-hoped-for-and-now-reality 50th Anniversary tour (note: Jagger, are you listenin'??); they'll also be putting out a brand-new album to boot!

Now, some of you are bound to say they're too old for the "fast cars, surf and girls" shtick. But you forget a couple of major factors in the success of the band:

(1) They've been to group harmony what the Everly Brothers were to duos! They don't scream their lyrics or funk them up ... the blend is actually ageless!
(2) These guys are certainly, by virtue of their experience both in and out of the studio, great instrumentalists. And, as greats from Les Paul to Paul McCartney prove, that talent doesn't die as you get older ... it just gets better!
(3) Brian Wilson and Bruce Johnston are both prolific songwriters, with pieces that could be as enthusiastically and artistically performed by artistes in their late 60s as well as those in their mid-20s! And the songs are evergreen!

With Dennis and Carl gone, who'll replace them? This is where all true BB fans are in for a treat: Whilst we have Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and a rejuvenated Brian Wilson on board, the fivesome will be rounded out with the return of original Beach Boy David Marks!
And there's word that -- possibly -- the drumming may be handled by either John Stamos (he played drums on the BB video, Kokomo), Ricky Fataar -- even perhaps even another guest appearance by Ringo Starr! After all, the ex-Beatle did sit in on drums with them before ...
One more thing: As we all are remembering country music's Glen Campbell as he valiantly tours for the last time (he suffers from early stages of Alzheimer's), we should remember that, on songs like Dance, Dance, Dance, even he was a Beach Boy for a time! So, as one winds up his career, another revives theirs ...

IN OTHER NEWS: Phil Spector filed an appeal of his 2009 murder conviction Friday to the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing that the judge in the trial gave improper opinion on expert testimony.

Troggs lead singer Reg Presley was hospitalised in Winchester, England Wednesday (14 December) with what's suspected to be another stroke (he had a major one a year ago). He's also suffering from pneumonia and fluid around the heart. Reg's wife says he first began to feel bad whilst performing in Germany 3 December and has gotten progressively worse. "Doctors think he has had another stroke. He's not very well and I have no idea how long he'll be in hospital," she said.

Hey ... remember that Gibson guitar seen on the cover of Bob Seger's "Greatest Hits" album? Well, it turns out the guitar was stolen from Seger when he moved between late August and early October. It's valued valued between 8 and ten thousand dollars!

Hendrix Is NOT the All-Time Greatest!

As I've said in an earlier post, The Rock Relic will be ... well, a relic (small "r") officially after 1 January. But, already, the vacant position's filled:

Whilst the public is gearing up for the return of The Eagle (my pen from 1986-2002, all told. Includes the syndi column, a stint at a Christian newspaper here in Ashland, two papers I published, three years online and a par-trihidge in a pearrrr treeee ...), I just plugged it in to suit my musical side and affairs (including blogs) -- thus, the ELECTRIC Eagle ...

We'll be covering a lot of territory in twice-weekly posts here from now on ... and some will be controversial, like this:

JIMI HENDRIX IS NOT THE ALL-TIME GREATEST!
What better way to kickstart the new, Eagleised blog than to dispute Rolling Stone™ Magazine's declaration of Jimi Hendrix as the "all-time greatest guitarist."
Now, don't get me wrong: Jimi was one of the most prolific guitarists of the Twentieth Century. But, look -- we have to face facts:

There were thousands of young guitarists who didn't have the credentials of Jimi; in fact, most guitarists of that time remained small-ticket or even unknown outside their home area. A few of these, given the right push, could've rivalled Hendrix!
And to say he was the greatest of all-time disqualifies legends like Les Paul, T-Bone Walker and modern-day greats such as Joe Satriani, Joe Perry, the late Stevie Ray Vaughan and others.
But, most of all, is this thought (shared by reader Eric from Spokane): "Jimmi (sic) Hendrix could not be the best gtrist of all time. Time is not over yet. The Rapture hasn't happend, no huge meteor has hit us, Jesus hasn't come back. So how can any body say he is 'ALL-time' best when "ALL time" isnt finished?"
Think about it, gang ...
Eric's right!
How do we know someone won't come along that'll exceed Hendrix's prowess?? Time isn't over yet ... we're still 98.6 degrees-and-kickin' ... so is it fair to say he's the 'all-time greatest'??

New Wings Ready To Fly ...

IT'S TIME TO FLY AGAIN 2012 is just a few weeks away and, waiting silently on the edge of his perch high atop Melody Mountain here in beautiful downtown Ashland, KY., an eagle is ready to try out his newly-healed wings ...

I was first called that 25 years ago by a third-grade student at Pineville (NC) Elementary, where I had volunteered as a teacher's aide and tutored. It became my pen name whilst a syndicated columnist, and lasted until 2005, when The Rock Relic emerged.

Over time, the Relic character grew (and, for that, I thank you), but the person of Chuck Hinson began having a few ... well, let's say "troubles".
Those began to multiply, and it affected both my health and my work (thus, the finances). But this Relic still trudged on, all the while knowing it was in my power to control the situations ... rather than have them control me.

A few days ago, I was checking out my archives when I ran across a challenging email from my late mentor and friend, Lloyd Thaxton (aka "Lloyd Thaxton"). When I'd told him, back in '06, about the old "Eagle" monitor, he sent these words in one of his emails: "You're an Eagle. Then, FLY, EAGLE, FLY!"
Those words sent chills down my spine. Uncle Lloyd's been entertaining a heavenly audience since 2008 ...
(By the way: That earlier "aka" bit? That's how LL signed one of his first emails to me. Just included that as a tribute ...)

Then a very wonderful reader included, on her Facebook® page, one of my favourite Biblical verses (Isaiah 40:31):
"But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
At the very same time I read this, the radio was playing a song by one of my all-time favourite country artistes: The late Waylon Jennings.
The song??
The Eagle.

NOW ya see why the bird's gonna be the word again??

Now, on the rock side of life, I'm adding a little to the mix: I'm reviving the Electric Eagle (many thanks to Spencer Hannabuss, my British mate from The 286 and, formerly, The Fore, for this idea). For all other writes, it'll be non-"Electric". For you who don't like eagles ... well, just be sure to carry a good, strong umbrella ('cause we know what to do!) ... lol

So, come 1 January 2012, "The Rock Relic" will become just that: A relic from days gone by. But the Eagle ... gonna be flyin' high once again!

Unknown Christmas Facts!

We'll get back to the rock in a couple of posts ... but, because it's "the Season", I thought it'd be cool to take a look at some largely-unknown facts about Christmas:

WHY DECEMBER 25? For centuries, it was thought that December 25 was first decreed as the formal Christmas Day by Pope Julius I in 450 A.D. Rome. Whilst that is true, it's been discovered that the first celebration of Dec. 25 as Jesus' birth day was actually 114 years earlier, during the reign of Emperor Constantine.

THREE WISE MEN? Nope. The fact is, no one knows how many there were. This probably started due to the three major gifts to the infant Jesus. Those three were:

GOLD -- A staple amongst royalty, this signified that the Christ child was to be a King.
FRANKINCENSE -- Ancient people burned frankincense, thinking it would take their prayers to heaven. This, then, was to signify Christ's role as our Priest.
MYRRH -- This was used as an embalming material in Egyptian mummies (this also implies where the wise men were from). It signified that He would Die for World Sin.

GRANDMA GOT RUN OVER by a reindeer?? Recent research has discovered that it was actually a John Deere, but the owner didn't want to take the blame. Besides, who could make a Christmas song out of a tractor??

JOLLY OLD ST. NICHOLAS The old St. Nick persona actually began with a man known as Nicholas, from the village of Patara. When his wealthy parents died, he took his inheritance and followed Christ's words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor."
He suffered big time for his Christian beliefs, died on 6 December in 343 AD. When he was buried, a unique relic called manna formed in his grave. Said to have healing powers, it created a lot of popular devotion to Nicholas. The anniversary of his death became a day of celebration known as St. Nicholas Day ... and people started giving to others in homage to his works.

THE ORIGIN OF SANTA CLAUS As word of St. Nicholas spread to this country (via settlers from Europe), the name allegedly was a variation of the Dutch Sinterklaas (or Saint Nicholas). But, more recent research has discovered that a more likely origin was in the quick pronunciation of the Saint's name. Saint Nicholas, repeated in a fast, accented manner, becomes a form of Santa Claus!
The reindeer, by the way, was partly the concoction of writer Clement C. Moore in his poem, A Visit From St. Nicholas -- as was Santa's stature and outfit. "Donder" and "Blitzen" were originally German names for Thunder and Lightning.

On PBS' "Oldies" Fundraiser

Look ... nobody digs PBS' shows more than The Relic, and I've gotta admit that their fundraisers do include some pretty cool performances at times.
But when they did the "Oldies But Goodies" (Sixties music) a few nights ago ... wellll, it could've used a little improvement!

Now, that's not to say the hour or so that I watched wasn't good: in fact, it had some twists that actually surprised even an old rockhound like me:

I mean, who would've thought that one of the greatest, most gutteral rockers of the decade -- the dynamic Mitch Ryder -- could turn into a serious blues brother? After catching him on a couple of vids since, I'm convinced the man has actually vitaminised his career by turning it in that direction (huh?? Yeah, I know it's not a real word, but ... awww, go with the feeling for once, okay??).

And to hear the legendary folk duo of Chad and Jeremy -- circa today -- is to hear intimate harmony enveloping songs that were rich with smooth, flowing lyrics.

In fact, they sounded just as melodic as they did nearly sixty years ago. Whilst Chad (Stuart, also a producer) and Jeremy (Clyde, also an actor and direct descendant of the Duke of Wellington [who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo]) have understandably aged (c'mon ... who hasn't other than Regis?), they're living proof that "age" doesn't mean "old" by a long shot!

The falsetto of Lou Christie (Lightning Strikes and Rhapsody In The Rain - the latter of which was banned in many markets for being too "sexually-suggestive" for young ears!) was still strong, and the songs still fresh, but ...

Then there was the "new" Paul Revere and The Raiders. Now, don't get me wrong: I appreciate the fact that Uncle Paul has kept the band going all these years, and that they're still one of the most popular showbands in America.
But, somehow, whilst the song they performed was the hit, "Kicks", the band couldn't really (here it comes ...) kick into gear (toldja!!). We long-time PR&R fans were used to seeing the whole group showcased -- Mark, Paul, Smitty (RIP), Drake (RIP) and Fang (whose present act still has the exuberance and bounciness that trademarked the original band -- and, brother, this cat and his crew can really rock!). On the PBS show, though, only three of the "new" band is showcased -- and it sorta dragged a little. True, the lead singer isn't Mark Lindsay anymore, but he is good. They still put on neat shows, btw ... so catch 'em if you can!

Then there was Peter Noone ...
the front man for the phenomenonenomenal Herman's Hermits is entertainment, personified! I mean, he never puts on a bad show! And, if you're lookin' for fan-friendliness, I guarantee you'll find it with this character!
So, when Peter Blair Denis Benard Noone's smiling face came on-screen as one of the emcees -- and, later, he serenaded the crowd with the HH hit, I'm Into Something Good, you just had to know that we were also into it, as well!

All told, a ~~good~~ great time was had by all ...

Resolution Revolution 2011-12

Over the past few days, as I went through my files (both online and off) covering the past year, I realised that the Relic can't afford to wait to put his resolutions into action! Whilst it's been a good year in some ways for this bald(ing) bird, it left a lot that needs some serious tweaking.

So I'm calling this my Resolution Revolution for 2011-12:

First of all, I've honed down my work to two serious studios. I'll still do the blogside business reviews, though -- and this blog and The Mouse Clique will be updated much more often (and with more tangible material!).
The talent with which I work are, truly, some of the best on either side of the Atlantic. But, due to the excessive (and sometimes unfruitful) writing assignments, I haven't followed-through with them as I should.

Sooooo, in this next year, you're going to be hearing a lot about Phil "Fang" Volk, Mike Lane, Matthew Hardy (pictured), The 286 and others; from vids here to interviews there and loads of music in-between, these fab acts are seriously worth following!
And they'll be in front of DJs, A&Rs, programme managers, labels, etc. every week for max exposure and promotion.
For you who have expected mailouts from me but didn't receive them, blame the USPS (except for one, which was my fault!) -- and get ready, because your mailouts are seriously in the mail this time!
If you're from the royal family in Nigeria, you will come through with those megabucks you promised or I will begin deleting any email ~~you send me~~WAIT! I, ummm ... I already do that, so ONE RESOLUTION ACCOMPLISHED!!

GRAMMY® AWARD NODS

Amongst the classic rockers who are nominated for Grammy® Awards for 2012 are: Paul McCartney (now, is that really a surprise?), Bruce Springsteen, Tony Bennett (hey ... face it: He does rock!), Booker T, Barbara Streisand, Jeff Beck, Gregg Allman and Betty Wright. Congrats to all the nominees announced last night.

???? What's a country singer doing on our rock music blog here??

Well, it's for one reason: Olin Melton rocks!!!

You see, he and I grew up in Pineville, N.C. -- in fact, he was part of my band, Hy-Que, at one time (he played with us at the ill-fated talent show of 1967, where we were knocked out of first place by Pam Baumgardner's PJ and the Majestics).

Today, he's making Austin, Texas home -- and thrilling audiences across the Lone Star State with a sound that's as smooth and welcome as warm maple syrup poured over a mess of pancakes on a cool Sunday mornin' ...

I've just heard Olin's song, When Love Dies, and, with his permission, I'll put a link to it on-site here. You've just gotta hear it -- and, when you do, I guarantee you'll want more from this dynamic singer/songwriter! So stay tuned ... there's definitely more to come!

Actually, he's one of two Pineville boys who are makin' waves in the country music world: the other (who also picked with me back-in-the-day) is Jett Eller. Now, whilst I'm honoured to be working with the best country ever to come outta the UK in both Mike Lane and Ron Ryan, and the terrific rock of The 286, PaperFaces, Matt Hardy and the legend himself, Phil "Fang" Volk, this is the first time I've had the pleasure of introducing my own hometown friends and former bandmates to the mix.

So, beginning next week and amongst new videos of these other great acts, I hope to bring you more on this awesome performer and gentleman! Oh ... and if you're on Facebook, you'll wanna "friend" him for sure!

NOW ... A LITTLE ROCK QUIZ:

This week marked the first and last time one of the world's most popular bands played a live show. They were three years apart -- and, no, it wasn't that band you see on your left. I just threw them in here to throw you off-track a bit (PS: those guys did make it big, though ...).
Sooo ... which band was it??

It is also the 43rd anniversary of Elvis' big Comeback Special on NBC (hey ... wasn't that the last big show the Peacock Network had?? Just wondering ...).
Now, there were two things about this show that stood out: One had to do with the set (in this case, meaning the songs for the show), and the other with his fans in the audience. Can you tell me why they were different?

One more: Whilst Paul Revere and the Raiders saw their hit, Good Thing, enter the "Hot 100" of the Billboard charts (finally peaking at #4; these guys were thoroughly Solid Gold, though!) in 1966, an old and pleasantly unusual song hit the charts and made it all the way to #1. BONUS!! If you know the name of the song, then tell me: Which TV commercial borrowed the song and altered the lyrics to fit its product??

A Visit From ... WHO?!?

Okay … gotta ‘fess up here: I first produced and published this piece a few years ago … but, considerin’ the Christmas season is here again (and what an ingenius idea it was, time-stamping it to refresh every 365 days! WOW!!), I thought it’d be apro … apropri … cool to play it again today for yer readin’ pleasure. So, enjoy if ya can:

Hey, little rockaholics … how ’bout gatherin’ ’round and let Uncle Relic read y’all a real good Christmas story, okay??

It’s called … well, it usedta be called The Night Before Christmas but, ummmm, I … well, I sorta added a few, er, afterthoughts to it.

Awwww, c’monnn … let’s try it out, and see whatcha think:

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS (skeptic’s version)
(NOTE: These remarks are, in no way, a reflection of this writer’s feelings. As far as I know. Well, maybe …)
‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
(so they have MICE? THAT’S UNSANITARY! Why can't they go down to the hardware store and get some D-Con™ traps?)

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
(Geez ... these poor folks don’t even have a working washer-dryer!)
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
(Hmmm ... maybe the last name of the washer repairman?)

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
while visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
(Awww. while MOST kids go to sleep thinkin’ of CARS, GAMES or SEX, they’re thinkin’ FOOD! Tsk … poor, starving waifs …)

And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
had just settled down for a long winter’s nap,
(Suuuure: Man and wife, kids in bed, naked except for kerchief and cap. To sleep. Uh-huh …)

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
(Probably just a stray dog. Why be so PARANOID?? Oh … that’s right: They’re, uh, “SLEEPing”! Besides: "spring"? Hmph ... his WIFE probably kicked his butt out to see what it was ...)

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
(Well, if he hadn’t eaten the sash to begin with … poor nutrition habits! [Huh? I dunno ... I guess it's imitation JAPANESE food or somethin' ... obviously, the KIDS didn't eat it. They're STARVING!])

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
(Now, why “breast”? Why not “mantle” or “lawn”? Sounds sexist to me! Oh, wait … they were “SLEEPING” … so I guess his mind was on … er, SLEEP. Yeah! Sounds about right …)

Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
(Yeah … right. “Little old” drivers are rarely “lively and quick”. Seen the HIGHWAYS lately?)
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
(Gotta admit ... it's the strangest entrance I've ever seen for a washer repairman!)
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
(what exactly IS a "COURSER?")
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
(Awww, geez ... he’s gonna wake up the KIDS, who are dreaming of “sugar plums” …)

Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen!
("now" WHAT?!?)
On, Comet! On Cupid! On, Donder and Blitzen!
("ON" what??)
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
(Now, WHY doesn’t he use the DRIVEWAY like everyone ELSE?)

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!
(Dash away all of what? That bearded bozo better leave my stuff alone and get to fixin’ that washin’ machine!)

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
(Umm … dude, it’s snowing! How’dya know if there ARE leaves??)
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
(can anyone explain this line?)
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew
(I ask ya again: what’s a friggin’ COURSER?? Thoughtcha had REINdeer, bubba …)
with the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.
(sounds like ol’ SC was an afterthought! Oh … and forget the toys; let’s fricasee those REINDEER! Should taste better than “sash”!)
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
(Come ONNNN! They’re gonna wake the kids, I tell ya! An’ who’s gonna replace those SHINGLES??)
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
(was he drawin’ it back to BUST that dude for makin’ all that racket?)

Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
(waitaminnit. Isn’t that “entering without breaking”? And why was he carrying a “bound”? Is that North Pole “street cred” for a WEAPON or somethin’??)
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
(Awwww, CRAP! There goes the clean CARPET! Well, with the exception of the mouse droppings … )
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
and he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
(It’s late … strange dude looks like a peddler, breaking in through chimney … yep: five to ten at San Quentin at least!)
His eyes — how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
(WHOA! Sounds like daddy was gettin’ turned ON by the dude in red!)
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
(Man, this cat’s gonna set off the SMOKE DETECTOR!! An’ if the man’s WIFE hears that, she’s gonna hit the ROOF… and THAT'LL knock off all those tiny REINDEER! And then PETA will be on THEIR backs and …)
He had a broad face and a little round belly
that shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
(almost sounds like some bizarre PORNOGRAPHY, doesn’t it??)
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
(like HECK it didn’t … didn’t Linda Blair do the same thing in “Exorcist”?)
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
and filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
(WAIT!! What … what was the “jerk” doing with him? When’d HE come into the picture?)
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
(HE’S GONNA BLOW A BOOGER!! HE’S A REDNECK! I KNEW IT!!)
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
(oh …)
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
(hmph — earlier he called 'em by name. Now he just whistles for ‘em?)
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
(what the heck?? Since when does a thistle have DOWN??)
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

(AWWW, WOULDN'T YA KNOW? HE WOKE UP THE KIDS WITH ALL THAT CLATTER! NOW, ALONG WITH SCARED YOUNG'UNS, THE OWNER’S GOT

A CHIMNEY TO CLEAN
SOOTY FOOTPRINTS TO VACUUM
LYSOL TO SPRAY, TO GET THAT FRIGGIN' PIPE SMOKE OUTTA THE ROOM
THE KIDS TO CALM DOWN and get back to (ahem!) “sugarplum-land”.
AN UNSATISFIED NEARLY-NEKKID WIFE WHO DOESN’T KNOW HE WAS MAKIN’ EYES AT SANTA …
A POSSIBLE POLICE REPORT TO FILE

EDITOR’S NOTE: So, here, we have the tragic story of an impoverished, fairly uneducated family who lives in unsanitary conditions. Then, one night, upon lying down after a questionable meal — and with his precious children so hungry they’re dreaming of food — the man of the house comes face-to-face with an intruder. The perp made his way into the house in unconventional fashion, and proceeds to make a mess. Strangely, the man becomes attracted to him … and doesn’t stop him or his accomplice (aka “a jerk”) from their crime.
Pity, isn’t it??
Awww, the heck with it … MERPYSONS CHRISTOLIDINGS! (Well, it’s now 2011, and we’ve gotta be careful with our greeting, kids … so I've combined them all into one!)

ROCKNOTE: The above greeting was one coined as a collaboration between The Relic and Lloyd Thaxton in 2006. As so many “politically correct” people wanna downplay the “CHRISTmas” thing, and others don’t see it as a HOLIDAY, we just combined “Merry Christmas”, “Happy Holidays” and “Season’s Greetings” all in one.

You Never Can Tell (Rock Origins) ...

Man, you never can tell where the next rock superstar -- or song, for that matter -- will be coming from, can ya?
For example:

One of the saddest episodes in modern history involved the oppression of African-Americans during the Civil Rights struggle in the 1950s. Fortunately, in 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a ruling that ordered desegregation of formerly all-white schools -- thus giving black children the same educational rights.
Whilst it was still a highly (sometimes violently) disputed issue, the decision also gave birth to a new song ... one that, years later, was modified to become a top rock-n-roll hit.

Here is the original second verse. See if you know which hit it evolved into:

"Their robes were black, Their heads were white,
The schoolhouse doors were closed so tight.
Nine judges all set down their names,
To end the years and years of shame".

Uh-huh ... it was modified into the 1972 hit, Black and White by Three Dog Night -- and still stood out as an anthem of racial equality!

The great Overbrook High School (Philadelphia, PA) basketball program has produced some amazing players over the years -- including stars like Wilt Chamberlain, Walt Hazzard and Wally Jones.
But it's also produced a young rock artist who ... well, for a hint, let's just say it was as easy as 1-2-3.
Right. Young Lenny Borisoff, who later performed as part of The Dovells ("Bristol Stomp") and, as Len Barry, hit the charts with 1-2-3 and Like A Baby!

Even a drill-presser can make it big someday: This guy was manning the drills for Precision Tool Company and pulling in a whopping $27.00 a day (7 AM to 3:30 PM, five days a week). Later, he took a job as a truck driver, cut a record for his beloved mum and ... well, you can take the story of Elvis from there.

Then there's the story of Bud Shank. Now, though many of you aren't familiar with the name, you've undoubtedly heard his work hundreds of times over the years. Y'see, he was in the same building as The Mamas and Papas when they were recording their hit, California Dreamin'. At one point, John (Phillips) thought the song needed a little something extra, so, when he found that Bud played the flute, he brought him in for a shot at the solo. Shank got it in just one take -- thus performing what has to be the most popular flute solo in rock history!

And would you believe that a top song of the 1970s even evolved from a single menu item at a local Chinese restaurant? Apparently, it sounded as good as it tasted to singer Paul Simon, who took the dinner's name -- Mother and Child Reunion -- and, by adding some dynamic lyrics, made it a mega-hit!

Ahhh, you never can tell, can you??

ONE THING MORE: As I write this, we're awaiting updates on Robin Gibb -- former member of the legendary Aussie/Brit trio, the Bee Gees. He's battling what appears to be final-stage liver cancer. Whilst our prayers are with him and his family, our hearts especially go out to his mum and brother Barry. To this point, two other Gibb brothers have passed -- youngest brother Andy and singing partner Maurice. I'll update as soon as more info becomes available.

Apparently, there weren't any 'takers' for the latest rock quiz (no, it wasn't that hard ... was it??), so let's run down the answers ...

THE BEATLES (a two-fer): Unless you've lived under a rock since 1963, you know that John, Paul, George and Ringo comprised the most popular rock quartet in the universe. Over the years, many acts have covered their hits -- but there was one who had the honour of being the very first to do so. Who was he -- and what was the song?
The song was "Misery", and the singer was a solo artist named Kenny Lynch. He recorded it in early 1963.

The same guy! You see, he also considered himself a songwriter and offered to help John and Paul write their hit, "From Me To You". He was a 20 year old American R&B singer who went just by his first name and, on 28 April 2004, released a song called "F--k It (I Don't Want You Back)". The song became the first one with "that word" in its title to reach the Top 20 here, peaking at #16 (it reached #1 in the UK and Australia). The song was also listed in the Guinness Book Of World Records for "the most expletives in a #1 song", with 33.

AND A LITTLE COUNTRY: Who sang the hit I Fall To Pieces? (uh-huh ... that was easy, but ...) Who would've recorded it, had it not been "too 'country'" for her?? Brenda Lee.

BACK TO THE BEATLES (sorta) If you have an early copy of Sir Paul McCartney's album, Red Rose Speedway, there's a chance that you'll find a little something "extra" on the LP jacket -- something that's not on later pressings. Any idea as to what that is??

The 96 Percent

Huh?? Been off awhile due to bronchitis ... that's why! Now ... that being said, let's move on:

Whilst it sounds more like an "Occupation" gimmick, the title refers to something that's setting the stage for a return of the solid, guitar-based rock (aka, genuine rock-and-roll) that we knew.

By now, everybody knows the chap you see in the photo. And, besides Paul McCartney, there are performers whose images are conjured up simply by saying just part of their names:
Elton. Jagger. Bowie. Bono.

In fact, according to the following clip, 40% of the top acts on the U.S. circuit are over 60 years old; 19% are in their 50s (U2 and Madonna's range)! All told, a whopping 96% of the top acts are over 40 years old!

And there's good reason why "Boomers" acts claim TWO-FIFTHS of the overall market! Y'see, whilst today's "music" is smothered in synths, loaded with loops, saddled with samples and festooned by "Auto-Tune" (which, IMHO, still sounds like a vehicle-accessory store!), our sounds were made with actual instruments we had to learn to play: things called guitars, drums, keyboards and occasionally saxophones. We didn't have mixmasters or whoever to steal this sound or rip off that one, feed them through a Waring blender (or whatever they do) and add vocals that have been doctored or distorted electronically.

Why, all we had back then were (1) bands that relied on actual musical ability, (2) put in the BST (blood, sweat and tears) to rehearse, get the gigs, fill the halls and, hopefully, gain that all-important recording contract and (3) knew how to rock an audience into a frenzy based upon those skills -- and how to actually relate to the fans.
They didn't go the "easy" route, with someone taking techno-gadgetry and making (ta-da!) music (or an unreasonable facsimile thereof) for them to sing in front of. And they didn't develop these hot-shot "diva" attitudes about it, either!

And it's for that reason that guitar-rock from Beatles to U2 is regaining its popularity (hmph ... as if it ever left!).
It's why fans will drive for miles just for a ticket to see Phil "Fang" Volk (core member of the original Paul Revere and The Raiders) -- a man who has one of the most powerfully-rocking shows on any circuit.
It's why there's a tremendous clamour for The Rolling Stones to tour once more next year -- their ... 50th Anniversary!
It's why, just a few days ago, the press went nuts over news that the original lineup of Black Sabbath are returning for a new tour and album.

The bottom line?? The 96% know how to PERFORM! They don't expect some techno-machine to perform FOR them. They play actual INSTRUMENTS and sing lyrics you can HEAR AND RELATE TO!
And above all, they have genuine personality!
Thanks to them ... THE POWER OF ROCK AND ROLL WILL NEVER DIMINISH!
