A 13 year old Ohio cat was confirmed to have infected with the Swine Flu (H1N1 Virus). This is the first case of the H1N1 virus in a feline. What is the significance of this case? According to (ABC- Good Morning America) Dr. Richard Besser, Senior Health & Medical Editor, the H1N1 virus can be passed to species (such as your pet dog or cat). Luckily, the cat has been treated and recovered.

Every pet owners need to take extra precautions when suffering from the flu. Here are ways to protect your pet with the virus.

1. Wash your hands before /after touching your pet.

2. Avoiding kissing your pet.

Halloween is a fun time.
It can be a frightening for children and to your family dog.
Keep them both safe on Halloween. Here are some ways you can protect your dog.

Test, acclimate and prepare your dog for fun goolish costumes, door bells, and noise.
Use a leash especially for excitable dogs, preventing them from running out to chase the fun goolish friends.
Just in case, make sure your dog wears a collar with "identification."
If you see that acclimating your dog becomes a challenge place your dog in a crate or quite safe area in your home with a favorite toy. Visit your dog and provide yummy treats from time to time.
Keep halloween sweets out of paw reach. Chocolates are hazardous to your dog's health. Make sure to communicate with your family members so they understand candies/chocolates are harmful for your dogs.

However, there are things to consider before purchasing clothing, any cute attire or costume for your dog.

It is very important to find the proper fit for your dog clothes. Too tight or small clothing can restrict your dog’s movement, breathing, and circulation. On the other hand, too big or loose clothing can also be hazardous. It can be fraught with danger on your dog’s movements ( i.e. walking or running).

The danger starts when the ticks are on your dog’s body and bites. Surprisingly, your dog will not feel the bite - it is painless. However, the area of the bite may become infected.

Palo Alto: Dog Friendly Town

The RSP team met with a new pet social networking site in Palo Alto, California. Palo Alto is a very dog-friendly town. There’s no doubt that people living in Palo Alto love their dogs. Dog owners take their dogs everywhere.

Most dogs are welcome to stores, coffee shops and restaurants. We saw lot of dogs with their owners strolling down University Avenue,Town & Country and Stanford Center. Most of the dogs were well behaved and some were leash free.

Dog-friendly town/places is sure a great way for the dogs to be socialized with crowds of people and other dogs. Lastly, the majority of dogs we saw were “fashionable” - either wearing a fancy collar with sparkling charms, or in a deluxe carrying bag/ stroller, or dressed with a unique tee. It is surely a California pooch style.

Oldest Dog: Guinness World Record

Chanel, a dachshund mix was featured this morning in the Today Show. Chanel will be celebrating her 21st birthday. If she is human, she’d be 120. Chanel is named and has been certified as the oldest living pooch on the planet by Guinness World Records.

Chanel wears a “doggles” due to her cataracts. Chanel always wears sweater or tee because she gets cold easily. Also, Chanel wears booties to protect her limb and due to a benign tumor on one hind leg.

All in all, according to Chanel’s vet “he never seen a dog her age do so much.” Chanel has few physical issues that can be expected at an age that translates to 120 for a human.

Boutique Show at the Metropolitan Club Chicago

Bo Moves To The White House

Bo made his debut at the White House today. The first family showed off Bo on the South Lawn. The First Lady Michelle did most of the walking while Bo scampered around the wet lawn. Malia took a turn to walk but Bo took off running.

According to the President, he laid down some guidelines. Each family member is going to help out taking care of Bo. “We all have to take turns walking the dog.” Bo will also have his own “spot”, a bed in the White House “but not in my bed” Obama added. It was surely a pawsome day at the White House. The Obama’s welcomed Bo as their first pet and new addition to the family.

The Obama’s dog is surely in high alert. It was reported today by TMZ that the first family dog will arrive this Tuesday. It is going to be a Portuguese Water Dog. Senator Ted Kennedy’s family helped the Obama’s family to acquire the dog from a Texas kennel. The male dog named Charlie is about 6 months old and was returned by the original owner.It is not sure if the Obama’s family will retain the name Charlie.

The Obama’s dog will be from the same past lineage as the Kennedy dogs. There’s also speculation that the Kennedy’s will be presenting the “dog” to the Obama’s family.

It’s April and the Obama Dog Watch is on “high-alert.” From Chicago WBBM Newsradio, Obama’s family dog arrival is “definitely not this week” according to the First Lady’s press secretary, Kati McCormick Lelyveld. However, Senator Dick Durbin has said that the Obama family will be getting their dog soon. He confirned that the Obama family met the dog and is in training. Senator Durbin did not confirm on what dog and where is it coming from.

Now, that the President and First Lady are back from their trip, would the Easter bunny bring the Obama dog this weekend? Will wait and see.

Don't Let Your Dog Become A Canary

Is it any wonder that with the “pre green” proliferation of chemical laden cleaning and laundry products, building supplies, and monthly flea poison treatments, that our pets are developing cancer at such an alarming rate? In addition to protecting one’s animal from constant exposure to a myriad of possible household carcinogens, our having to negotiate the constant recalls and dangers of an unregulated, processed pet food industry can be an overwhelming and depressing nightmare. But there’s also a deeper issue: when it comes to these everyday toxins that we have become so unconscious about or accepting of, have our cherished, innocent pets become our modern day canaries?

There are MANY things we can do to prevent our beloved companion animals from ever getting cancer. When my 8-year old dog, aka: my adopted daughter, Buttons, was diagnosed with deadly carcinoma and given 6 weeks to live, I launched a massive personal research campaign into the world of holistic medicine. I soon came to learn that “holistic” didn’t mean symptom treating with natural remedies or herbs in lieu of pharmaceutical drugs. Instead, it meant clearing my home environment of all possible toxins, cleansing Buttons’ entire system physically and emotionally, and then giving her the proper nutritional support so that Buttons’ body could do what an unburdened body does best: HEAL ITSELF. Buttons went on to thrive for another 11 years. Exactly 1 week before her 19th birthday, she died peacefully of old age in my loving arms.
