Collecting Vinyl Records : Fantastic EBook

2011-05-05T15:48:00.000-07:00

Some time ago I entered a contest by a blogger I follow. His blog Collecting vinyl records is perhaps the most extensive blog on Music/ Records out there. The effort he puts into his blog is amazing. in the year or so that I have followed him I have obtained valuable and entertaining information. When I saw his contest for $25.00 gift certificate to the online store SoundstageDirect.com I jumped on it. Wadda ya know we won. I never win anything. I gave Erin the gift certificate as this store has great "new" vinyl of many current as well as classic rock bands. The biggest surprise of all was a "free" copy of his E-book Collecting Vinyl Records.

I have seen the ad on his front page numerous times and considered purchasing it for the low low price of 6.99 but I'm leery of those things. No offense but I have seen lots of crazy yahoos selling their Ebooks and they are about 10 pages of what any idiot knows on the subject. When I downloaded the link sent to me I was astounded to say the least. up popped 195 pages of everything any record collector would want to know. A dissertation on the fine art of Vinyl Collecting. He covers it all. Maybe even too much but too much is not really a bad thing.

This E-Book is a must for new collectors. If we had this book when we first started selling , it would have saved us years of mistakes. Yes now I do know most of the information on the 195 pages but it makes for a great read for me too. Its written in a style that reminds me of talking to a Record Geek at a record show. Yes this man is KING of the record geeks and I say that with much reverence.

Buy this book. You wont regret it!!!

Eriks Ipod Playlist Pixies Here Comes your Man

2011-03-23T17:35:00.000-07:00

Great song. I do have to attribute this song to Erins Ipod additions. Although I love to complain about the massive Smiths/ Morrisey body of work on our Ipod ( will that man ever be happy?) its great having a family body of music. How can you lose?

Eriks Ipod Playlist Carl Douglas Kung Fu Fighting

2011-03-23T17:23:00.000-07:00

I'm not sure why but this has been on everyone of Eriks Playlists since I have been married to him. Somewhere in the past 20 years I have come to love this song. It makes me giggle. Carl Douglas attributes this song to watching a kung fu movie, jazz great Oscar Peterson, and pain killers. Enough said.

Eriks Ipod Playlist. David Bowie Heroes

2011-03-23T17:13:00.000-07:00

I always liked David Bowie . He was one of many great artists during my youth. Lately however I have a new found David Bowie appreciation. His songs seem to be a bit more meaningful. Was I a shallow teenager or do songs have different meaning in different phases of our life. Also need to mention the older Bowie in the video. He looks so normal. Hmmmmmm.........

Eriks Ipod Playlist .Glenn Miller In the Mood.

2011-03-23T17:04:00.000-07:00

Another Iconic ageless song. Love the old videos. I've read a lot of blogs and articles about kids playing their parents old records. I guess I can finally say this is from my parents record collection.

Eriks Ipod Playlist. Tracy Chapman Talkin about a Revolution

2011-03-19T06:04:00.000-07:00

I love Tracy Chapman. She makes me care. Being one of Americas most socially conscious writers/ performers she also lives what she preaches. Shes a smart strong educated woman with a wonderful skill. The world needs more Tracy Chapmans.......

Eriks Ipod Playlist: Aerosmith Sweet Emotion

2011-03-17T18:47:00.000-07:00

Great old rock from my teenagedom. I had this 8 track tape in high school and must have played it a thousand times. Toys in the Attic had the infamous Big Ten Inch on it and I loved to roll down the windows and sing at the top of my lungs. The good thing about an Aerosmith song is that the lyrics were always simple and clear. Anyone could be a rock star when they came on the radio. My friend Tracy and I would drive the little white Toyota for hours just looking for trouble. Those sure were good days. I saw these guys a few years ago. They still rock for old guys. Maybe they could be part of the Over 50 Music Fest!!!!!

Eriks Ipod playlist: Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris : This is Us

2011-03-16T17:13:00.000-07:00

Great song to commemorate a great marriage. 20 years ago today Erik and I were married in a field of flowers . My sister dropped the top of the cake and her horse almost killed someones kid and oh yeah my brother was an hour late. The perfect wedding. This is us. Hopefully for many more years to come.

Erik Ipod Playlist: Howlin Wolf Tail Dragger

2011-03-15T17:45:00.000-07:00

I swear every time I hear this song I smell a smoke filled bar. Being sellers of used music we are beyond fortunate to have an Ipod full of old Blues. Its always a welcome treat when one pops up during shuffle mode. Its funny too because they love to insert themselves between Taylor Swift and The Smiths. My Ipod has a personality disorder. Howlin Wolf was just about the only old Blues Masters to acquire a fortune. Most were not paid well or squandered their money on wild women and booze. Not Howlin Wolf , he was illiterate until the age of 40 and went back to school to get a GED. He armed his self with an education . What a smart and talented man he was.

Eriks Ipod Playlist : Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros , HOME

2011-03-14T19:02:00.000-07:00

Home from Mardi Gras. Great trip .Wish I had gone at a younger age but us old folks can still party. LOVE this song by Hipster pseudo Hippie Gypsy band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Erin saw them at one of those 5000 unknown band 3 day festivals. San Francisco Outlands I believe. This song makes this old lady warm and fuzzy inside. I wish they had a festival for us 50 somethings. There are definitely enough of the old rock bands touring Indian Casinos and State Fairs to make a rockin good time.

Eriks Ipod Playlist : creedence Clearwater Revival Bad Moon Risin

2011-03-02T06:35:00.000-08:00

Southern Rock straight out of El Cerrito, California.....go figure. Still great music from the band formally known as the Golliwogs. Front man John Fogerty is still out there somewhere plying his trade .Love the hair and the trendy vests.

Eriks Ipod Playlist : Leslie Gore its My Party

2011-03-01T18:06:00.000-08:00

Leslie Gore was the best. Her "Fly Girls " back up dancers just make this video. What a wonderful simpler time it was......

Eriks Ipod Playlist : Jeff Bridges I Dont Know

2011-02-27T13:37:00.000-08:00

Honestly Crazy Hearts had the best soundtrack ever. T-Bone Burnette is a musical genius. And who knew Jeff Bridges and Colin Farrell were so musically adept. Not sure where it is on the playlist but I'm sure The Weary Kind will rear it head in the next few months. Another great song on this soundtrack. Amazing too that it is Oscar day and this should be our next song. Must be a sign from Howard....

Eriks Ipod Playlist : Bruce Springsteen Darkness on the Edge of Town

2011-02-26T16:54:00.000-08:00

According to Erik , Bruce Springsteen is GOD. He certainly is one of the hardest working dedicated artists out there. He is another poet who truly lives for his craft. Although you must wait a bit for this video to start I love it because it shows a passionate young man who loves what he does. Doesn't get much better than that.

Eriks Ipod Playlist : Iggy Pop Candy

2011-02-25T14:36:00.000-08:00

I have a love / hate relationship with Iggy Pop. A few years ago we acquired the "most" extensive collection of Iggy Pop in the world. Most of which is on my Ipod. Don't get me wrong , Iggy has created some of the best music to date but he also has some strange tunes under his belt. This shirt hating devil is also credited with inventing crowd surfing being the first rocker ever to take a stage dive. All I know is when Kate Pierson, vocalist for the B52s croons, "Ive had a hole in my heart for so long.." it moves me. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!!!! So if you see an old lady in a beat up red pickup singing at the top of her lungs, you know this song is on.......

Eriks Ipod Playlist: The Doors Hello I Love You

2011-02-24T07:57:00.000-08:00

What can I say? Iconic song from an iconic Jim Morrison. Its a shame what drugs and alchohol mixed with a dash of fame will do. This UCLA graduate died at the tender age of 27 in Paris , France. Alchohol ? Drugs? Asthma? The world may never know. RIP Jim.

Eriks Ipod playlist : Connie Francis Stupid Cupid

2011-02-22T17:40:00.000-08:00

Who doesn't love Connie Francis ? Her career has spanned decades. I will admit her early work is her best. I dare you to listen to Stupid Cupid and not tap your toes. Impossible.

Eriks Ipod Playlist. The Ramones Blietzkrieg Bop!!!!!!

2011-02-21T17:06:00.000-08:00

Another Ramones favorite. Who doesn't love Blitzkrieg Bop? Personally one of my favorite Ramones songs.

Eriks Ipod playlist : Wanda Jackson , Mean Mean Man

2011-02-20T08:51:00.000-08:00

We love Wanda Jackson : The Queen of Rockabilly. She has everything a rockin woman should have . A good riff and a nasty blusey, albeit a bit southern, voice. Believe it or not we have Erin to thank for our Wanda love. At the ripe old age of 16 she told us we might like this album and boy did we. Proving your kids can teach you a thing or two. I guess she has a great ear as Wanda and Jack White , of the White Stripes, have teamed up on a new album. All I can say is Wanda still has some chops and Jack White can play a mean guitar!!! Gotta love the fringed dress.

Eriks Ipod Playlist :Frank Sinatra Ive got the world on a string.

2011-02-19T07:33:00.000-08:00

Yup here's the twist....Frankie Baby!!! I really do enjoy a good Frank Sinatra song once in a while. He just exudes cool and charm. Frank was my best seller in the record store last year. When the Frank Sinatra Broadway play began there was a great demand for Frankie Boy.Not to mention Micheal Buble' bringing the standards back to life. He even rated his own category in the store. Its funny but he also reminds me of my old neighbor Mrs Grow. She was a Frank fanatic. Pictures of him adorned every wall of her house. Her daughter Barbara and I would climb the tree next to her house and plan jumping off the house with umbrellas like Mary Poppins. Not sure if we ever did but it was a great way to waste a lazy afternoon.
