The Beach Boys released the single "Surfin' USA" this day in 1963. The B-side was "Shut Down". It peaked at #2 in the US. The single also brought some controversy over the melody line from Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen". Berry sued and won songwriting credit on "Surfin' USA" as well as song royalties. Buddy Holly and The Crickets recorded "That'll Be The Day" this day in 1957 in Clovis, NM. The title was taken from a line in the John Wayne movie The Searchers. Buddy had recorded a version a year earlier for Decca and was prohibited to re-record those songs under his name even if Decca didn't use them. It's why this came out as "The Crickets" on Brunswick. Buddy was also signed to a "solo" deal under Coral so recordings on that label came out under just Buddy's name.

14 year old George Harrison joins The Quarrymen in 1958

Just a little under 3 weeks shy of his 15th birthday, George Harrison joined The Quarrymen. He was first friends with Paul McCartney who then introduced him to John Lennon. It was Harrison's guitar playing (particularly his skill at playing the song "Raunchy" note for note) that won over Lennon. Here's one of the songs they recorded as The Quarrymen- "In Spite Of All The Danger", written by George and Paul.

The Day The Music Was Born

February 3rd, 1959 is often referred to as "the day the music died" thanks mainly to the popular Don McLean tune "American Pie". He was singing about the plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson). Dion DiMucci was part of this tour with The Belmonts (as seen in the poster above) and had decided to give up his seat on the plane to take the bus to the next gig. Interestingly, he says "the day the music died" doesn't define that day for him. He refers to it as "the day the music was born". The legacy those 3 left inspired people from all over to continue developing their craft. Read more of his interview HERE.

He was proficient at both upright bass and guitar as well as his own vocals. His compositions have become blues standards and recorded by the likes of Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Elvis Presley, Dion, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, The Yardbirds and others. Paul McCartney taped an episode of MTV's hugely popular "Unplugged" show. While other artists plugged in their acoustic instruments into amplifiers, Paul and his band were 100% unplugged with mics strategically placed near guitars, piano, etc. to pick up the sound. A recording of most of the songs appeared on an album in the summer of '91. "Midnight Special", "Mean Woman Blues" and "Matchbox" were among the songs that did not make the final album.
