Here's my most recent work for the January 2009 issue of Kansai Scene. The article is about the resurgence of diseases thought long gone in Japan buy the growing number of mosquitoes. I wanted to show mosquitoes literally tearing through cities, poised to destroy humanity with the wonderful sicknesses like Malaria.

Kansai Scene, Issue 102, November 2008. Here are five caricatures of Japanese Politicians, both current and retired. Included in the set for the story "Japan Politics 101" are the current Prime Minister, Taro Aso; Minister of Defense, Yuriko Koike; and former Prime Ministers Yasuo Fukuda, Junichiro Koizumi, and Yasuhiro Nakasone.

Kansai Scene, Issue 101, October 2008. This illustration is for a story on the Japanese style of Ero-Guro (Erotic Grotesque), entitled "The Fine Art of Being Grotesque". This image is based on the story of Rashomon. Throughout the many versions of the story told, an overall theme of committing to an action that these characters would rather not do sprung to mind. The perverse pleasure that they each take in this unwanted situation is represented in their hands, which connect all three characters, while the horror of what they are truly doing spills out onto their faces.

Here's yet another set of images done for the Free English Mag, Kansai Scene.

This is for A Measure of Safety, an article on the rise in crime in Japan published in their February, 2008 issue. I did the cover on this one, and the sinister character up front is my wife. Badass cop or criminal. You be the judge. Everyone's got a theory. Here are the originals plus a different, darker version of the cover and an unpublished image.

The Kyoto Atomic Bombing [Kansai Scene] (2007)

Below is the second set of work that I've done for Kansai Scene. This edition is for an article entitled The Kyoto Atomic Bombing for their December 2007 Issue.

I wanted to create some scarier images, taking familiar archetypes of the area and enveloping them in the beautiful light of the most horrible creation of man. Beloware the original scans, plus slightly different versions that they had the choice of.

This is one of the pieces I drew for the Glico Portfolio. I don't really know where the idea came from, but the thought of a battle-worn Teddy Bear bringing back his kingdom's sacred sewing kit was stuck in my mind and wouldn't let go. In the near future, I want to color this bad boy.

I was inspired to draw this panda when I saw many of the subway train posters that warn against having your hands getting trapped in between the closing doors. Plush Teh'di (2002)

The Plush Teh'di shirt is also a simpler design. I gave it a squared-off boat neck, the back collar being deeper than the front. I allowed the sleeves to come off-shoulder and made the sleeves a little long, coming to an end at the elbow.

The Bullet Rah'bet (2002)

The Bullet Rah'bet shirt is a lot simpler than it's sister designs. I wanted to go a little more punk with it, removing the sleeves, and increasing the armhole size to reach the waist. I opened up the neck as well and shortened the overall length of the shirt, but not by much.

The Idol Nerss shirt's cut at the shoulders in order the show them off. I also gave the T-shirt a couple darts in order to create a better, cleaner shape along the bustline.

The Razor Keh't shirt is cut at the waist and modified with garter straps to allow the attachment of another skirt or accessories for flair. Underneath the shirt and skirt, suspenders hold up replaceable pant legs that are held low to the ground.

The Sophisticated Bah'm shirt is a tube-top with a low back and a strap that wraps around too the back. On
the straps, snap fasteners have been place to allow accessory pieces, such as the tight sleaves with the buttoned cuff.

Bite-T and Square Skirt (2001)

Here's Yui, wearing a culmination of all the major ideas I put together for this line. Her sleeves are removable and replaceable. The rectangular silk skirt with straps and silver, Chinese-print lining. The dyed-t with zipper back and hand-drawn design based on my Senior Thesis work.
