Finding and acquiring backlinks can be hard.

What if you could easily find and acquire a bunch of links your competitors had in common?

Would that make link building easier for you?

That’s precisely what you can do with the Common Backlink Intersect Tool.

In this post, I’ll walk you through how to use this tool to do just that.

And best of all, the tool is free.

So let’s get started…

Link intersection: The untapped link building technique

One of the SEO industry’s first backlink building techniques was finding intersecting links between competitors.

It’s a lost art that still bears some pretty powerful links.

As we all know…

Links are one of Google’s top ranking factors.

And the quality and relevance of a link can make or break it. In fact, Google has been clamping down harder and harder on how SEOs build links.

Luckily, with the link intersect technique, you have a much lower risk that these links could harm your site. And that’s because your competitors have these same links and they’re still ranking. So it’s logical to determine the links are relatively safe.

And for those of you that are having trouble and need links you can build when no one will link to you, then these are a perfect candidate.

On top of that, by analyzing your competitor’s link intersect, you’ll typically find competitor’s site A and competitor B might have a common link that competitor C is missing.

That means, if you can get all those common links, you’ll have a link equity leg up on your competitors!

How to loot your competitors’ backlinks

At its core, the link intersect technique is simply finding what links your competitors have in common and then acquiring them.

You’ll start by creating a list of your competitors and their backlinks.

Then using software (such as our tool) compare that list for overlapping links.

For example, If Competitor A and Competitor B both have a link from Site X, then Site X is an intersecting link.

What our tool does is allow you to do that comparative analysis quickly.

Using the step by step process below, you’ll be able to get a comprehensive list of links that you can then go out and acquire.

Let’s go get them!..

Step #1: Choosing your competitor’s sites

Your first step is to choose your competitors.

This is the most critical step!

There are two schools of thought here, so you may want to make two lists that you check separately with the tool.

Most marketers will instinctively make a list of their top keyword competitors. That can get you some results, but you’ll be missing out on another subset of higher quality links.

For the best links, you should make a list of your industry’s top and most popular sites.

To do that, list out top industry organizations, governing bodies, and any other sites that are leading the forefront of your industry.

Put yourself in the shoes of a website visitor, and ask, “what sites would I go to if I wanted information on our industry?”

For example, if you’re doing SEO for an attorney, you may want to add some of the local governing bodies, top law magazines, some of the best law firm websites in the country, and some of the most popular legal blogs.

Make a list of about 3-10 of those websites, and you’re ready to move to step #2.

Now on the flip side, if you’re going the top keyword competitors route…

Then start by doing a Google search of your most important keyword. Next, take a look through the SERPs and make a list of the top 3-10 sites.

If you’re doing local SEO (like we do as a Tampa SEO company), I’d suggest skipping sites like Yelp and Angie’s List. These sites are not typically going to provide you with a good comparison for intersecting links.

You may also want to do a Google search of some of the other keywords your targeting. And then modify your list to include some of those sites. But make sure you’re looking at similar keywords so that we’re getting sites in the same overall topic/niche.

Once you’re satisfied with your list, you’re ready to move on to step 2.

Step #2: Copy our Google Sheet

This entire tool is built using Google spreadsheets.

The benefit is that you can copy the spreadsheet/tool and keep it forever!

If you don’t already have a Google account, you’ll need to sign up for one (it’s free).

Google requires you to have an account with them to copy over the spreadsheet.

Next go to the Google Sheet at:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PvXKUd84U7oZLOSdQLZ_XSqfh_Uc31EvQTCagq36LW8/edit?usp=sharing

And make a copy of the spreadsheet to your Google Drive.

Select:
File > Make a copy

Type a name and select a folder on your drive

Click
OK

You should now have a copy of the tool in your drive that’s ready to be used.

Step #3: Sign up for Ubersuggest

Before you can start using the tool, you’ll need to get an account with Ubersuggest.

You’ll want to sign up for a paid account.

A paid account will allow you to download a list of your competitors’ links that we’ll need to plug into the tool.

Neil is currently offering a 7 day free trial in case you’re hesitant.

In my opinion, at $10 a month compared to other tools out there, this is a killer deal!

Once you’ve signed up for an account, move on to step #3.

Step #4: Export your competitor’s backlinks

Using Ubersuggest, enter in one of your competitor’s domains.

And click “Search”

Now make sure you’re on the Backlinks section of Ubersuggest.

Next, under the graph on the right hand side make sure “ALL LINKS” and “ONE LINK PER DOMAIN” are highlighted.

Now click the “Export to CSV” button.

Save this file to your computer.

Repeat the steps in this section for each of your competitor’s websites.

Step #5: Copy & paste links into spreadsheet

Now that you have a CSV file of all your competitor’s backlinks, it’s time to add them to the tool.

Open up the CSV file for your 1st competitor, and copy the entire list (including headers).

Next, open up your Common Backlink Intersect Tool Google spreadsheet.

Open up the tab marked “Competitor #1”.

Now paste your copied list from the CSV file into this sheet.

Repeat these steps of copying and pasting each of the competitor’s CSV files of backlinks into the corresponding tab in the spreadsheet.

Now go to the “Start Here” tab.

Type in your competitor’s domains under the column titled “Competitors”.

After you’ve completed all of that, you’ll need to wait for the tool to process.

Step #6: Analyze your results

Once the tool has finished processing, you’ll be able to see the results.

You’ll know the tool has completed once the loading graphic has gone away.

The most important takeaway from the tool’s results is those intersecting links.

You’ll see a list of everyone one of those links under the “Results” section in the “Start Here” tab.

The “link” column contains all the common links.

Then under each competitors’ column, you’ll see an “X” if that competitor has a link from that domain.

If you’re curious about the exact page linking to a competitor, you can refer back to that competitor’s tab and find that domain in their links.

Your next step is to assess which of those links you’ll want to acquire for your site.

In some cases, there are sites I’d suggest not going after. Sites like scraper sites and stats sites, I’d just skip. Those typically won’t bring you much value SEO wise.

You may also find some of the shared links are broken links to your competitor’s sites. This is a great opportunity to snag these links up. To find this out you may want to run a report on Ubersuggest for that competitor to see what backlinks are broken.

Depending on the link, there will be a different strategy needed to acquire that link. For example, you’ll probably find some directory websites that you can simply contact the site’s owner to get placement.

Beyond intersecting links…

The tool will give you more than just the shared links.

Under the section where you typed in your competitor’s domains, you’ll see stats for both the number of links and common links for each competitor.

Then if you open up the “Referring Domains” tab, you’ll see a list of all referring domains from all competitors.

You can usually find some good link nudges by browsing through the links in the “All Referring Domains” column.

There you have it!.. One last piece of advice is to run the tool through several lists of competitors. You’ll yield a lot more and much higher quality links if you run this tool through a number of competitor lists.

Happy link building!

You may have hear (or maybe not), that Google is going to be changing on April 21st.

This change will affect your website.

As a result, there has been a bit of hysteria on the subject. But I want to dispell any misconceptions and give you the facts.

So here goes:

On April 21st, Google will be changing the way it grades websites for its search results.

Google publishes updates like this all the time, but this one is special since it has such a wide effect.

Here’s the result:

Websites that are not mobile friendly will now rank lower than those that are mobile friendly in search results.

But WAIT!

You may have already heard that (or maybe not)… But to add to the hysteria many people are now claiming this is going to PENALIZE your website if it’s not mobile friendly.

It won’t, but hear what it will do:

Mobile friendliness (meaning how well your site looks and functions on mobile devices) will become a factor in how Google ranks your website on April 21st but ONLY for searches on mobile devices.

So that means:

When someone does a search on their mobile device if your website is not mobile-friendly, it won’t show very high in the search results if other similar websites are mobile-friendly.

That means you could lose out!

You could lose out on a number of potential customers and traffic to your website if your site is not mobile friendly.

Google won’t give you a “penalty” per say. Instead, they won’t rank you very high in search results, so you’re going to see a drop in your website visitors.

I bet you don’t know this…

Do you know how much mobile traffic your site gets?

Let me tell you, most people have no idea at how much traffic their website gets and are amazed to find out how many people visit their site on a mobile device.

So what do you do?

We CAN help!

Your website probably isn’t mobile friendly.

So at very least you should have us check if it is. Then we can discuss what to do.

Fill out our free analysis, and I’ll check your website for free to see if it’s mobile friendly. Plus I’ll give you a report on other critical data you’re missing in your online promotion.

So it’s the holiday crunch time and you need to see results from SEO fast!

Time to freak out!? No, there are tons of things you can do that will create an impact even last minute.

I’ve compiled a list below of actions you can do right now which will impact your SEO ranks quickly this holiday season.

Write a blog post.

Put together a short quality blog post can quickly rank you for long tail keywords.

Blog posts on platforms such as WordPress typically get picked up by Google rapidly. So you can get a page indexed quickly.

Now to make this generate more of an impact for you, write the post so it contains long tail keywords relevant to your website.

Obviously you need to do some research first. Also keep in mind you want to find keywords that have low to almost no competition.

Targeting keywords that fit that criteria will get you ranking quickly and some traffic.

Now let’s turn that up a notch! If you really want to create some traffic write several posts and then use the skyscraper technique.

Doing that successfully will drive more traffic, links and social shares to your website than you can shake a stick at!

Get new life out of old content.

Using a few techniques you can make your old content produce more traffic and conversions.

First gather up a list of all your most successful blog posts.

Next go through each blog post and create an additional resource for each, such as a checklist on implementing points you went over in your post, etc.

Make sure it has enough value that people would want to give you their email for it.

Now create a form for each so that visitors can download your new content when they enter their email.

Then imminent the skyscraper technique on each of these blog post. Even if you’ve done this technique on that blog post in the past, do it again now and highlight the fact you have this new downloaded content.

Doing all this will get you more links, mentions and traffic fast and could quickly make an old piece of content rank higher.

Offer last minute holiday deals.

This technique will gain buzz about your brand quickly and as a result should improve your ranking fast.

Come up with some awesome last minute holiday deals that you can give out.

Make sure the deal is awesome. This won’t work if your deal or deals are not something that will create buzz.

Now create a landing page for this deal. From your landing page link to pages on your site you want to rank. Make sure the anchor text is a form of a keyword you want the page to rank for.

Next it’s time to get the word out!

Post about your deal on all your social media accounts. Find people on those accounts that are not your followers and tell them about the deal.

Next research bloggers that you know would like your deal. Email them and tell them about your deal.

And if you can spare a little dough set up some Facebook and Twitter ads about your deal.

That should start to create some buzz if you have a deal people really won’t.

And the result of that should be links, shares and traffic to your deal landing page, which will in-turn boost your rankings of your linked to pages.

Leverage the holiday spirit.

Being it’s the time of giving you should use that to your advantage.

Send out some emails to potential websites you’d like to get a link from.

But the trick here is to ask them to do it for the holidays. People are more inclined to give you a link if it has some significance or meaning to them.

Doing enough of this with the right email message can get you some links quickly from some authoritative sites, this boosting your rankings quickly.

You can even offer to give them a holiday gift for helping you.

Get site changes to show up in Google fast.

As you know if can take some time for changes to your site to take effect in Google.

This is one biggest barriers to quickly getting results to changes you make that will improve your ranking.

But there are a few things you can do that will help drastic speed this up.

One, after you change your content update your Sitemap file. And the. Resubmit it to Google Webmaster Tools.

Two, post a link to your newly update content on all your social media account, especially Facebook and Twitter.

As we’ll make sure you write a quality post that gets people reporting your content.

The idea here is that you want as many people’s accounts linking to your content as possible, as quickly as possible.

To make that work even better if suggest purchasing some ads on Twitter and Facebook with the goal of getting it liked, favorited, reposted and retweeted by as many people as you can.

Three, write a new blog post and link to your updated content. Then follow all of the above 2 methods for that blog post.

Four, get someone else to link to your new updated content. And have them or yourself do methods 1-2 on the page they’re linking to you from.

Well, there you have it! Some methods for improving SEO quickly this holiday season. May it being you cheer, joy and a Happy Holiday!

We’ve been working on upgrading our stats report email that sends out every week detailing key statistics of how that client’s marketing is going. My plan is to have a very robust email detailing key metrics for all the major areas we focus on, including SEO, social media, blogging, email marketing, online ads and more.

To do that I’ve been patching together lots of APIs and database connects to consolidate all the information into this one email. One of those stats I want to display is the client’s Facebook Page views using the insights’ metric page_impressions from the Facebook Graph API.

To do that and allow my weekly email app to run based on a cron job (so it can automatically send out), I needed to get a never expiring access token for this. This took me quite a while to figure out due to the lack of detailed explanation on Facebook’s docs and other places I’d reviewed online. So here is how to get a never expiring Facebook Page Access Token.

Very first thing you need to do is make sure you are an admin/manager of the Facebook page you want a get a never expiring token for. Without that you’re not getting anywhere.

[For an updated 2018 version, click here]

[For an updated 2016 version, click here]

How to get a never expiring Facebook Page Access Token:

Created a Facebook APP or used one I already created.

Wrote down that Facebook APP’s Id and Application Secret.

Got a Short-Lived Access Token from the Facebook Graph API Explorer. Facebook Graph API Explorer can be found here https://developers.facebook.com/tools/explorer

First selected my app as the Application dropdown.

Then clicked Get Access Token button.

When popup opened, I clicked on Extended Permissions and checked boxes for manage_pages, read_insights and read_stream.

Then click Get Access Token on popup window.

This gave me an Access Token in the Access Token box. I copied that down. And tested it with the Facebook Access Token Debugger https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/accesstoken just to see if it was a token that would expire and it should expire in less than 1 hour. I didn’t need to test this but wanted to just to see what it would say.

Then I took that Access Token, the APP’s Id and Application Secret and plugged those into this URL
https://graph.facebook.com/oauth/access_token?client_id=APP_ID_HERE&client_secret=APP_SECRET_HERE&grant_type=fb_exchange_token&fb_exchange_token=ACCESS_TOKEN_HERE

That URL gave me a Long-Lived Access Token. This expires in 60 days. I tested it to see that using the Facebook Access Token Debugger. Now I tested this Access Token with the Facebook Access Token Debugger and got back that it expires in 2 months (60 days).

Now to get the never expiring Page Access Token, I went to Facebook Graph API Explorer and plugged in that Long-Lived Access Token we just created which expires in 2 months. I pasted this into the Access Token box. Then entered into the Get input box “MY_FACEBOOK_USER_ID/accounts” (without quotes). If you don’t know what your Facebook ID is you can get it here http://findmyfacebookid.com/.

Then I clicked the Submit button on the Facebook Graph API Explorer page. Although when I did that I got back an error. So I put back into the Get input box what was their originally to see if I could get my id. I put this back in “me?fields=id,name” (no quotes).

I got back an id number and my name in the results.

I took that id and plug it into the GET input box “MY_FACEBOOK_USER_ID/accounts” (without quotes). Now I got back a list of pages I manage. Along with an Access Token for each page. This Access Token should be a never expiring token.

To confirm these were never expiring tokens I tested them with the Facebook Access Token Debugger and got back they never expire.

Updated 2016 Version:

This only works for existing apps. So if you have not created your app yet or don’t have an app, then create one.

Go to https://developers.facebook.com/tools/explorer

Select your applications from the dropdown on the top right hand side

Click “Get Access Token” button just below the application drodown on the right hand side

In the dropdown select the page you want to get a access token for. If you don’t see your pages listed then you’ll need to make sure you’re set with the admin role for the page. Also you may have to click “Get Page Access Token” in the dropdown, after which then your pages will show in the dropdown next time you click the “Get Access Token” button.

In the “Access token” input field click the blue exclamation point icon

In the popup click the “Open in Access Token Tool” button on the bottom left of the popup

This will open a new page with that app’s access token details. You’ll most likely see the token only lasts for an hour or so

To extend that token and get one that doesn’t expire, click the “Extend Access Token” button

That will give you a never expiring access token

Updated 2018 Version:

To get this to work first you have to follow all the step in the 2016 instructions above, click here. Then come back and follow the instructions below.

After following 2016 version you should have a token that lasts for 60 days.

Go back to Graph API Explorer, paste in the token in the “Access Token” field.

Under that field paste in “me/subscribed_apps” (no quotes) and make sure it’s set to POST.

Click Submit.

Now back up in the “Access Token” field, click the blue circle exclamation point icon.

Click button “Open in Access Token Tool”.

At bottom right of page click the “Extend Access Token”. It should now make that token a never expiring token.

Lets face it, your website wasn’t created just to look pretty. Your website should be driving you traffic and most importantly sales! So what are you lacking that is hold your site back from driving you sales?

You Didn’t Do Surveys
It can be said that if you are not doing surveys to find out why people buy your product and what “buttons” make them buy, then your marketing is really a complete guessing game and the odds aren’t always in your favor. Therefore surveys are the MOST important part of any marketing and promotional campaign.

Lack of Targeted Traffic
Without people visiting your site no one will see you – that’s obvious. But it should also be just as obvious that the traffic you are getting should be your ideal customers. It does no good to have all the traffic in the world if they’re not the people that buy your product or at least visitors who will spread word of mouth about you. This is where SEO comes in. We find out what your ideal customers are searching for and optimize your website so those people who search for that end up on your site.

Poor or No “Button” and Call-To-Action
If you’ve done surveys you will find out what are the “buttons” (figuratively) or words you can use to bring about an emotional response in your ideal customers and create a desire in them to purchase your product/service. You must use this button/words on your website. It should be the main focus of your site and certainly the main part of your home page. After your button, you need to have some sort of call-to-action. With the button you got their attention. Now that you have their attention you need to get them to do something, wich is what your call-to-action does. Most cases it’s contact you, but that could be different.

No Easy Way to Buy
Look at your website, can a visitor EASILY contact you to purchase without having to look around your site to find your phone number or an email, contact form checkout page? Ideally this should stand out and be part of your call-to-action. Let’s say your selling widgets. Are you listing each of the available widgets on your site so someone can easily find them and then simply click a link, fill in a form or give you a call to purchase? Put your self in your customer’s shoes and then look at your site. Make your site function based on the response you want from your customers.

You don’t A/B Test
I could have correctly made reason #5 poor design or bad content/text or something to that effect, but the fact is if you don’t survey (and yes an A/B Test is a type of survey) you won’t know if something should be changed or what changes make a positive or negative effect on your site. You should be A/B testing to find out what works and what doesn’t. Google tested 41 shades of blue just for their search button to find out which preformed best. It’s just as critical for you to be testing pieces of your website. FYI, just in case you don’t know what A/B testing is, it’s a simple way to test changes to a web page against the current design and determine which ones produce positive results.

Every SEO should be focused on making sure links work on a site, right? Well sometimes this task can be quite cumbersome. In fact if you have a site with hundreds of pages it can be down right almost impossible to check all those by hand in an acceptable time frame.

So here are a few tools you can use to speed up that process.

First is my favorite, W3C’s Link Checker. It does the whole process for you. All you have to do is enter in your website URL and it spits out all the links on that page which are broken. And even shows you a list of links that lead to pages which are redirected. Pretty cool, huh? The only down side to it is that it only checks that one page or URL you entered it. It doesn’t check your whole site automatically. Oh but wait! It does that too!

To get check a site over you just need to click the “Check linked documents recursively” checkbox and then enter how the recursion depth. The recursion depth indicates how deep you want to look through links to pages on your site – meaning how many pages deep you want the checker to go on your site, checking each page on it’s way for broken links.

The data from this tool is awesome. You can get a lot more data than just broken links.

Next up we have LinkChecker a Firefox Add-on which seems to be pretty popular.

Then Check My Links, a Chrome extension. Jon Cooper posted a very informative blog post on not just how to check your own site for broken links but how to leverage that extension to build back links to your site. Pretty neat trick! Check it out over on SEOmoz.org, Check My Links Chrome Extension – A Link Builder’s Dream.

The last nifty tool I want to mention is Google’s Webmaster Tools. Within your webmaster account there you can view data on what pages have broken links and exactly which pages are linking to those broken pages. The fact that Webmaster Tools is providing source data for broken links makes this data 10 times more useful. You can quickly clean up broken links and as a bonus you know the links Google knows are broken . Yep, It’s pretty handy!

Well that’s it for now. Do you have any favorite tools you use to check for broken links? I’d love to hear them! Let me know in the comments.

You many or may not have heard reference to something called long tail keywords. Without a doubt most SEOs will rave about what can be done with such keywords. So let’s start by going over what they are.

To understand long tail keywords you must understand what type of keywords are not “long tail”. For a lack of a better term we are going to just call these “non-long tail” keywords “normal keywords”. These normal keywords are those keywords or phrase most searched for in search engines.

This could be something like “SEO” or “iphone“. Notice they are general keywords that lots of people would search for.

Log tail keywords are just the opposite. These are normally non-general keywords with not too many searches being preformed on them.

The funny thing about this is you would think those general keywords make up a larger number of searches, or search queries, then compared to those non-general keywords. But the truth is that the long tail keywords actually make up more searches than the normal keywords. Why is this?

Well it’s because there are more long tail keywords and when you add up all their search volume you get more searches being preformed. So why the name “long tail keywords”, well the name comes from the way the search volume looks on a graph – see below for what I mean.

Chart by SEOMoz.org

Examples of long tail keywords are “how does the body detox” or “what is the cause of Fibromyalgia“. As you can see these are not keywords you would think would be normally searched for and are some what specific.

But that also makes them more qualified visitors. The user searching for long tail keywords is normally looking for a very specific thing and if your site is about that specific subject then your a perfect match! Those are the visitors you want, as compared to someone searching for a very general term and only visiting your site to see it’s not what they were really looking for.

So long tail keywords have a due benefit. One they are generally easy to rank for since there is a low number of searches and thus normally lower competition. And two, those searching on long tail keywords are looking for a very specific subject and are thus more-likely to be a qualified buyer or visitor to your site.

Google’s Adwords Keyword Tool is a goldmine for researching keywords and getting search data about each. With this tool you can find out approximations as to how many people are searching for a specific keyword. It also lets you narrow down for exact searches and even country specific searches.

Keyword research is a key stable to any good SEO campaign without it one can optimize for a keyword, end up on the first page or even in the first position and still not get any real traffic/visits. Knowing which keywords to optimize for can make or break the whole SEO process.

So here is how the Adwords Tool works. First you want to open up Google Adwords Keyword Tool in your browser. One you’re on the tool’s web page you want to enter in a word or phrase that best generally describes your website or the services/products you offer. For example Tampa SEO could be a good keyword if you’re a SEO company in Tampa, FL. Alternatively you can simply enter your website address (in the second field down). I prefer not to enter a web site address since most of the time the keywords you should be optimizing for are not the ones Google will pick from your site – otherwise you won’t need to optimize for it.

Now enter the captcha code and click the search button. Next comes a key step that some people over look. Your results you get will be keywords with search volume data but those search numbers will be for broad searches, meaning if your keyword was present inside or part of another search then it would be counted towards this total search volume. To show only the exact search volume for the keyword or words you entered click the [Exact] checkbox and unclick the Broad one.

Now you’ll be looking at exact searches. There can also be some question as to what this search volume means. The search volume is the number of searches done per month. Global Monthly Searches are searches per month around the world, where Local Monthly Searches are searches per month in your country or selected country.

If you want to get real fancy with it you can also change some of the options and filters. For example, let’s say you are interested in mobile searches only. Using the Advanced Options and Filters you can change searches from Desktop and laptop to All Mobile Devices.

Another quick trick is sorting the lists. To sort your results simply click the column header, such as Global Monthly Searches. The keywords and their respective data will sort by that column. Additionally you’ll notice results for keywords that are suggested. I like to look those these and see if there are any keywords I didn’t think up and see what their search volume is like – you can find some great keywords this way.

Now that you have the data you need to organize it. In another blog post I’m going to show you how to organize this data. Till then, happy researching!
