I’ve always wanted to post pictures of a classic veteran aircraft. like the ones in magazine advertisements for watches: propellers, steel, the myth of the past. “the world is yours, with an unbelievably expensive precision watch”.

last summer, this classic propeller aircraft flew by, and rolled then directly in front of my lens: lots of mirroring steel, countless rivets and the roaring sound of a couple of piston engines. a real shiny, elegant classic.

there is no doubt plenty of stories to tell about this plane. about what it was like to travel in it, what you got served for coffee on board and about how comfortable traveling must have been at that time.

however, I was only interested in this classic, hand built and manually flown, veteran – a true relic from the past.

i am unable to describe Lisbon with a few pictures and a few words. there is so much to discover and visit in this city I immediately felt at home and which is so hard to leave again.
i look forward to posting more photos from there in the near future.

the tirpitz history

tirpitz is an old gun position from the second world war and was intended to be the largest coastal artillery battery in denmark.

in 1943, germany’s navy, which was also in charge of coastal defense, planned to protect the esbjerg port. being it the largest harbour and most important strategic hub in the danish wadden sea, the german occupation forces needed to focus their defenses on that area. denmark had been occupied since 1940 and as the war progressed it became more and more imperative to fortify the west coast as part of the atlantic wall. part of this fortification effort was the construction of coastal batteries which should engage enemy shipping.

the installation in blåvand consisted of two double naval gun turrets with a range of 23 miles /~37 km, along with adjoining bunkers for support, barrack bunkers, fighting bunkers with anti-aircraft weapons, heavy air defense bunkers, munition storage bunkers, a fire direction bunker and a small gauge rail road for transport of ammunition. this defense system was projected to be operational by september 1945, thus it was never used, as the war ended in maj 1945.

the tirpitz museum

after the war, the site was emptied and cleaned of war materials. after that, the bunkers were left to be forgotten. in 1991 the complex was excavated and opened to the public as a museum. through two decades the bunker was a popular museum, telling it’s stories about war, gunnery and occupation. it was replaced by a brand new museum in summer 2017. the museum building today is nothing less than an architectural masterpiece, consisting of four large sections with separate exhibitions. the roof on the new museum is planted with lyme grass and the whole building is camouflaged as part of the landscape with the bearing parts of the construction hidden under the sand.

oliver’s film roll is not new.

i started the site a few years ago and published more or less regularly. back then, it has been a challenge to design and maintain a website, mail servers and databases. right until it didn’t do it anymore.
now, webhost got sold to another, bigger host with major upheavals as a result: new configurations, new rules, new prices, even new a new language.

then here’s what i did – as many wordpress bloggers seem to do the opposite: i’m moving to wordpress.com, coming from a self-hosted environment. here, you may be bound by some framework, depending on the plan you subscribe to, but otherwise you have no worries other than writing in your blog, connecting with the community, friends and like-minded people. right? at least, that’s what seems best for me right now.

in my previous, old posts, i always emphasized publishing my photos i shot over the years. either on my explorations in near and far or with my friends and my family. i quickly found that authoring written blog posts like this is not a good idea for me. explaining how, where and especially why i shot this particular image. it became a boulder for me to come up with a text that could fill the blank pages below or above an image. just an image i wanted to show the world. i just want describe what it is and where it is – and hope the image is speaking for itself.

since i failed to transfer the contents of my old site and everything seemed lost, i had to chose between abandoning the site in all, find other challenges in life – or to begin it all from scratch. reconstructing old posts manually would be like reproducing the past. i don’t want to do that. and hey: there weren’t that many visitors queuing up to see my work anyway. right?
starting over is never an easy task, especially not in life. so i consider myself lucky that i just have to reboot my blog-life, rather than the real one.

i will continue to publish my photographic work because i love admiring the work of others in the field. i want to be inspired and driven to make my contribution to that community. in that sense, the purpose of my re-startup is to be able to connect with like-minded, admire, watch, share and discuss each other’s work. wish me luck.
