The 28-page Guide contains program and activity descriptions and schedules for a variety of social, recreational, life skills, adapted and paralympic sport, cultural arts, and fitness activities and programs for children, teens, and adults with disabilities.

New this summer - Socialite program for adults ages 20 and older! Designed for adults with disabilities who need little or no assistance with daily living skills, this program offers fun-filled social outings in the community.

Details on a variety of adapted equipment available from the Therapeutic Recreation Lending Closet are also included; an adapted golf cart is available for use with 48 hours advance notice. Inclusion services are also available, and are provided by well-trained and caring therapeutic recreation staff who assess and provide the appropriate level of support needed by each participant to have a successful experience.

Rockford Park District is a member of the Northlands Association for Special Recreation (NASR), a cooperative partnership with Belvidere and Freeport park districts, and information about upcoming NASR activities in April, May, and July for various age groups is also included in the Guide.

Details about the Park District's automated installment payment plan option and Help Me Play fee assistance program are also included.

The Learn to Skate and Jr. IceHogs/Learn to Play Hockey programs offer people ages 18 months through adult of all abilities the opportunity to learn the skills to enjoy ice sports recreation for a lifetime. Four- to six-week group sessions are offered for beginner, recreational, and advanced skill levels, and meet at Carlson Ice Arena in Loves Park once a week for 30-50 minutes, with skates and helmets provided; the next sessions begin the week of February 16, 2016. LEARN BASKETBALL SKILLS OF CHICAGO BULLS --The Chicago Bulls are coming to Rockford! The Bulls/Sox Academy will host a Chicago Bulls FUNdamentals camp with the Rockford Park District for boys and girls ages 5-14 (grouped by age and ability level). This camp will teach the latest techniques in ball handling, passing, shooting, and rebounding, while also teaching children how to be student-athletes and great teammates. Each participant will receive top-flight instruction from professional Bulls/Sox Academy coaches, who have learned from the Chicago Bulls coaching staff. Children will learn the game, as well as life lessons such as discipline, respect, sportsmanship, and handling peer pressure, all in a fun and safe environment. Bring the family out to the country to enjoy Saturday afternoons finding fun at Rockford Park District's Lockwood Park, 5201 Safford Rd. in northwest Rockford. There's a covered pony ring for children ages 1-7, the Children's Farm Animal Barn with friendly farm animals, and horseback trail rides for riders age 8 and older. To complete their visit, families can relax together on a scenic hay ride through the scenic meadows and woods.

Tickets for the pony ring are $3 per child, and wagon rides are $3 per adult, $2 per child; trail rides are $24.00 per person ($26.00 non-resident), and Children's Farm Animal Barn visits are free. FREE SUMMER PLAYGROUND ACTIVITIES

Rockford Park District’s Time 2 Play Neighborhood Playground Programs offer children ages 5-12 a variety of fun, active, and safe opportunities to play and socialize with friends old and new this summer at 12 locations in Rockford and Loves Park. Enthusiastic, well-trained staff supervise activities such as games, water play activities, weekly field trips, and more; fees will be charged for each field trip participants choose to take. Supervision is provided only for the organization of activities, and not for each child present at the site.

These free programs are now underway, and operate Monday-Friday through August 7, 2015; one site runs from 9:00 am-1:00 pm, nine of the other sites run from 1:00 pm-5:00 pm, and two sites, Keye-Mallquist Park in Rockford and Wantz Park in Loves Park, are all-day 9:00 am-5:00 p.m. programs. These are some of the many free and low-fee programs offered by the Rockford Park District.

Free nutritious lunches and snacks will be provided for participants at all 12 playground sites as part of the expanded Summer Food Service Program from Community Action of Boone and Winnebago Counties. Summer Food sites are either in close proximity to a school where more than 50 percent of the children are eligible to receive free or reduced lunch, or the sites serve a group of children where most are from low-income families.

The Summer Food Service Program is operated nationally by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), administered by the Illinois State Board of Education, and managed locally by the City of Rockford Human Services Department, a Community Action Agency. The lunches and snacks are provided by Lifescape Community Services of Rockford.

Registration is required for the playground programs, and may be done either online at www.rockfordparkdistrict.org(click My RPD), or on site the first day of the program; participants need to complete a registration for each location they choose to attend. Rockford Park District's Atwood Center invites all ages to experience In the Outdoors, presented by Northwest Bank, a series of free activities held one Saturday a month April-September at 334-acre Seth B. Atwood Park, 2685 New Milford School Rd., Rockford, IL. Bring the entire family for a few hours of fun experiencing and learning about nature and aspects of the park through the variety of two-hour morning, afternoon, and evening outdoor and indoor programs. The next sessions are scheduled as follows:

· July 18, 2015 1-3 p.m. The 100-Year Hike - Atwood Park is located on part of what was once Camp Grant, a training camp for soldiers during WWI and WWII; hike through some of the park’s trails to visit the Camp Grant artifacts that still stand today

· August 15, 2015 9-11 a.m. Introduction to Archery (for ages 5 and older - All skill levels and beginners welcome; equipment provided

· September 19, 2015 7-9 p.m. Howls & Owls - Join Atwood staff guides on a night hike to howl in search of Atwood’s trained “Alpha Wolf.” Later, as the night sets in, try some calls to see whooo responds!

Rockford Park District’s Sounds of Summer is a free outdoor concert and performance series at three locations, and is designed to meet the diverse entertainment interests of the community by providing a variety of musical genres and entertainment performances. FOREST CITY QUEEN AND TROLLEY TOURS

Set sail, and ride the rails! Rockford Park District’s Forest City Queen riverboat and rail-based Trolley Car 36 offer public tours for the summer season departing from Riverview Park, 324 N. Madison St., Rockford, IL.

This season, the Forest City Queen riverboat has a new look and new tours, but the same nostalgic feel. Take a relaxing 45-minute cruise, and sightsee while learning about Rockford’s past, present, and future as the boat travels by some of Rockford’s most stately homes, businesses, and parks gracing the banks of the Rock River. Public tours operate five days a week, and depart from the dock near Riverview Ice House except on Thursdays, when departures are from the Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens dock.

Take a step back in time on Trolley Car 36 to travel along the scenic riverfront and recreation path, and hear about Rockford’s early days. The Trolley operates public tours four days a week, and travels north to the Symbol sculpture, where it turns around, then makes a brief stop at Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens, where riders can stroll by the rose gardens and Eclipse Lagoon.

These public tours are among many family friendly low-fee activities offered by the Rockford Park District. Boat and trolley tour tickets are $6 ($8 non-resident) for adults ages 18 and older, $5 ($7 non-resident) for seniors ages 62+ and youth ages 5-17, and $1 for tots ages 3-4; children ages 2 and younger are free.

The Rockford Park District invites beginning and experienced hikers to join the Atwood Adult Hiking Club one Tuesday a month for one-hour hikes that begin promptly at 9 a.m., and take place in a different location each time. It’s no joke, this is actually happening! GolfBoards and The Golf Bike will soon be available to rent at Elliot Golf Course, 888 South Lyford Road, Cherry Valley. GolfBoard will allow golfers to ‘Surf the Earth’ in a way that feels similar to snowboarding, surfing, or skateboarding. The Golf Bike combines golf and cycling, providing a new way to exercise and have fun on the golf course. Big Cup golf and FootGolf begin at Elliot Golf Course starting May 1, 2015. Big Cup golf is played with 15-inch cups, and will save time, strokes, and hopefully alleviate some of the pressure golfers often feel on the green. Big Cup golf will be offered only after 2 p.m. every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. A special couples night will take place the second Saturday of every month, and every Sunday will be Family Fun Day.

FootGolf is an exciting new experience that is growing in popularity, and combines the concepts of soccer and golf. Eighteen FootGolf cups will make up the course, which is only being offered on the back nine holes Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 4 p.m. until close. FootGolf is played with a regulation #5 soccer ball and shortened holes with 21-inch diameter cups. FootGolf uses golf’s basic model including tee boxes,

greens, bunkers, hazards, and nine holes of play. Scorecards display par scores for each hole as in regular golf.

FootGolf is played in the traditional format of up to four players per group, with players either walking the course or using golf carts. Holes are roughly half the distance of a regular golf hole.

Traditional golf will be available on the front nine at Elliot at all times, even during times when FootGolf is being played on the back nine. Please note: the two games will not be intermixed. Soccer or golf attire is recommended, along with indoor or turf soccer shoes, but no soccer cleats.

FOOTGOLF AT ELLIOT GOLF COURSE WILL BE REGULATED BY THE UNITED STATES FOOTGOLF ASSOCIATION (USFGA), WHICH IS THE LARGEST GOVERNING BODY FOR FOOTGOLF IN THE UNITED STATES. ONCE BUILT, THE COURSE WILL RECEIVE NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION THROUGH THE USFGA, AND WILL BE A MEMBER OF THAT ORGANIZATION AS WELL AS WITH ILLINOIS FOOTGOLF ASSOCIATION (IFGA). BEING A CERTIFIED FOOTGOLF COURSE WILL ATTRACT PLAYERS AND EVENTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD.

About the Butterfly Exhibit

Be immersed in a new and even bigger butterfly house with special plantings and opportunities to spot specific butterfly species. Also new to the exhibit, a special pupae emergence room where you can observe the transformation or metamorphosis process in action. Simply Spring: The Butterfly Exhibit opening was postponed a week due to a delay in permit processing. “These colorful insects come with certain United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) rules and regulations due to the fact that the tropical butterflies are flying in from Costa Rica unlike past years when the exhibit only featured native butterflies. As the butterfly exhibit at Nicholas Conservatory comes to a close, the season for butterflies in northern Illinois is just beginning! Come learn from Nicholas Conservatory staff how easy it is to incorporate butterfly-friendly principles into your yard and garden. Participants will receive a selection of butterfly-favorite seeds and a milkweed plant to take home; beginning gardeners welcome! Class fees: $10 residents of Winnebago County, $15 non-residents.

Rockford Park District's Carlson Ice Arena invites you to have fun ice skating with family or friends during public skating sessions while gaining the benefits of physical activity over the upcoming spring school break.

Weekday public skating hours at Carlson Ice Arena are held 11:00 a.m.-12:50 p.m. Mondays-Wednesdays, and Fridays
Additional Friday public skating at Carlson Ice Arena, 8:00-10:00 p.m.
Saturday public skating: 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Carlson Ice Arena, and 6:00-7:50 p.m. at Riverview Ice House

Both ice facilities will be closed Sunday, April 5 for the Easter holiday. Public skating admission is just $4 for youth ages 3-17 ($6 non-resident); $5 for adults ($7 non-resident), and children ages 2 and younger are admitted free. Skate rental is available for $2. This is one of many low-fee family friendly activities offered by the Rockford Park District.

While at Carlson Ice Arena, kids ages 5-12 can play, explore, and exercise in Sapora Playworld, the indoor three-level safe and secure soft play structure, and ages four and under can enjoy the Tiny Tots Playspace. For hours and admission fees, visit www.rockfordparkdistrict.org/sapora.
