Opening the Archnemesis show at The Five Spot was Uprise, aka Paul Knight - DJ, producer and bassist. Uprise brings an innovative approach to playing live bass in electronic music by utilizing analog synthesis, creating sub-crushing bass tones. You can find him on Reverbnation. I took the opportunity to try out a camera flash setting called "rear curtain sync", which fires the flash right before the shutter closes, as opposed to the beginning of the flash cycle. By utilizing a long exposure time and moving the camera while the lens is open, you can achieve some really interesting looking streaks and blurs.

One of the great things about photography, for me, has always been the anticipation of seeing the results of your efforts. Years ago (before digital cameras), the anticipation of going to the photo store to pick up pictures was like Christmas morning. How did they turn out? Did I get that shot? Did I have my camera set properly? I would barely be out of the store before tearing at the top of the envelope. What did I have? Then, the first look...sometimes good, sometimes not so good;-) But, the GOOD images, the ones that made me say "WOW"...THAT is what inspired me and kept me going.

These are the images from the past three months that made me say "WOW", whether it's the color, the composition, the "moment", or just a personal preference. Can't wait for the "WOW" moments in 2012!

The minimal stage lighting and the rambunctious crowds made shooting a bit of a challenge, but I managed a number of good shots.

How can you not like a band with song titles like "Too Much Pork For Just One Fork" and "Liquored Up and Lacquered Down"? Not only that, but they invite fans up on stage to dance and throw throw fried chicken into the audience. Need I mention a dancing, wrestling mask wearing Santa Claus?? From their website: "Since 1983, when they formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, SCOTS have played their unique hybrid of Americana, surf, R&B, rockabilly, and swamp pop...all the while driving fans into ecstatic, sweat-drenched paroxysms of joy".
