Old Joy tells the story of two friends, Kurt (Will Oldham) and Mark (Daniel London), as they reunite for a weekend camping trip in the Cascade mountain range andBagby Hot Springs, east of Portland, Oregon. The film is a story of friendship, loss and alienation in theBush era. I was fortunate enough to get a special sneak peak of Room Service's Made In The 216 event going on this Friday and Saturday in Gordon Square / Detroit Shoreway / whatever the proper branding name of that area is, last night. (Thanks Danielle!)

What I particularly enjoy about the event is not only its ability to feature Cleveland based designers, but also how the event acts as a form of urban design, utilizing a vacant storefront in the neighborhood, as well as having the event spilling out into the street, with bands and food. Festival urbanism, or spectacle urbanism, if you will, allows people to escape the day to day rhythms of the life of the street and imagine new possibilities and potentials for how the city can be used. All the more inspiring is how the event if is effectively the work of one person, Room Service owner, Danielle DeBoe. Just goes to show the power each of us have to effect our environment if one has the motivation to do so.

As the designers go, if you plan on going, you better plan on bringing benjamins because there are a lot of great things. And I mean A LOT. I was going to list them, but it got ridicilious quickly. So just see the postcards below.

The MADE IN THE 216 event was created by ROOM SERVICE (RS) Owner, Danielle DeBoe to highlight just how many talented designers are choosing to STAY and build their businesses in CLEVELAND; And to underscore their high level of talent by merchandising the Cleveland-made designs seamlessly amongst the items purchased by NYC, LONDON, LA, SAN FRANCISCO and PARIS-based designers. There are no ‘booths’ or traditional craft/trade show set ups that differentiate the designers’ wares. They are integrated in the same creative, narrative-driven way that RS merchandises their products year round.

About The 400 Blows:

(French: Les Quatre Cents Coups) is a 1959 French film directed by François Truffaut. One of the defining films of the French New Wave, it displays many of the characteristic traits of the movement. The story revolves around Antoine Doinel, an ordinary adolescent in Paris, who is thought by his parents and teachers to be a trouble maker.
A semi-autobiographical film, reflecting events of Truffaut's and his friend's lives, its style amounts to Truffaut's personal history of French film — most notably a scene borrowed wholesale from Jean Vigo's Zéro de conduite. It is dedicated to the man who became his spiritual father, André Bazin, who died just as the film was about to be shot.
Besides being a character study, the film is an exposé of the injustices of the treatment of juvenile offenders in France at the time.

Death Wish 3 is a 1985 action thriller, and the second sequel to the 1974 film Death Wish. Written by Don Jacoby (under the pseudonym Michael Edmonds), and featuring Charles Bronson returning to the role of Paul Kersey, Death Wish 3 is the last in the series to be directed by Michael Winner and was shot in both New York and London to reduce production costs. It has developed a cult favorite status by many fans of the series, despite most professional critics favoring the original. Death Wish 3 was released in the United States in November 1985...

Pecha Kucha Night Cleveland has released their list of presenters for Vol 3.

After Rockitecture's successful cross-disciplinary collaboration with Nomenclature presented at Vol. 2, Cleveland 3.1, I am returning for more. As part of a new collaboration between Micheal Abrahamson (of CUI) and Jeremy Smith (the man who refuses to blog), it is a decidedly non-cross disciplinary pairing. Our non-manifesto manifesto; Lo-Fi Architecture: A Modest Proposal, calls for giving architecture a needed attitude adjustment.

And holy crap... we're headlining! (At least this time I'm not the sole representative of Cleveland architecture.)

Persepolis is a 2007 animated film based on Marjane Satrapi's autobiographical graphic novel of the same name. The film was written and directed by Satrapi with Vincent Paronnaud. The story follows a young girl as she comes of age against the backdrop of the Iranian Revolution. The story ends with Marjane as a 21-year-old expatriate. The title is a reference to the historic city of Persepolis.
The film won the Jury Prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival^[1] and was released in France and Belgium on June 27. In her acceptance speech, Satrapi said "Although this film is universal, I wish to dedicate the prize to all Iranians."^[2] The film was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Man on Wire is a 2008 documentary film directed by James Marsh. The film chronicles Philippe Petit's 1974 high-wire walk between the Twin Towers of New York's World Trade Center and is based on Philippe Petit's book, To Reach the Clouds, which has recently been released in paperback with the new title Man on Wire. The film is crafted like a heist film, presenting rare footage of the preparations for the event and still photographs of the walk, alongside reenactments (with Paul McGill as the young Petit) and modern-day interviews with the participants.

It competed in the World Cinema Documentary Competition^[2] at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize: World Cinema Documentary and the World Cinema Audience Award: Documentary.^[3] In February 2009, the film won the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film, the Independent Spirit Awards and the Academy Award for Best Documentary.

About the Short Films of Charles and Ray Eames

Volume 1: Powers of Ten
POWERS OF TEN takes us on an adventure in magnitudes. Starting at a picnic by the lakeside in Chicago, this famous film transports us to the outer edges of the universe. Every ten seconds we view the starting point from ten times farther out until our own galaxy is visible only as a speck of light among many others.

Returning to Earth with breathtaking speed, we move inward- into the hand of the sleeping picnicker- with ten times more magnification every ten seconds. Our journey ends inside a proton of a carbon atom within a DNA molecule in a white blood cell. This DVD also includes the original version of POWERS OF TEN, produced in 1968, entitled A Rough Sketch for a Proposed Film Dealing with the Powers of Ten and the Relative Size of Things in the Universe, a remarkable film in its own right.

As the musical tower developed by Charles and Ray plays its cascade of music, the camera roams, using the office itself as a prism through which viewers can observe their lives and work. The film offers viewers a last chance to visit the shop and celebrate its joyous texture and aesthetic. 901 is a wonderful complement to the Eames films and a whirlwind introduction to the Eames legacy.

Children of Men is a 2006 dystopian science fiction film co-written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón. The Strike Entertainment production was loosely adapted from P. D. James's 1992 novel of the same name by Cuarón and Timothy J. Sexton with help from David Arata, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. It stars Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, Claire-Hope Ashitey, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Caine.

Set in the United Kingdom of 2027, the film explores a grim world in which two decades of global human infertility have left humanity with less than a century to survive. Societal collapse, terrorism, and environmental destruction accompany the impending extinction. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom—perhaps the last functioning government—persecutes a seemingly endless wave of illegal immigrant refugees seeking sanctuary. In the midst of this chaos, Theo Faron (Clive Owen) must find safe transit for Kee (Claire-Hope Ashitey), a pregnant African refugee.^[3]

The film was released on 22 September 2006, in the UK, 19 October 2006, in Australia and on 25 December 2006, in the U.S., critics noting the relationship between the Christmas opening and the film's themes of hope, redemption, and faith. Described as a companion piece to Cuarón's Y tu mamá también (2001), both films examine contemporary social and political issues through the epic journey of the road film.

"Children of Men" was not a financial success, but attracted positive reviews from critics. Ladri di biciclette (released in English as The Bicycle Thief or Bicycle Thieves) is a 1948 Italian neorealist film directed by Vittorio De Sica. It tells the story of a poor man searching the streets of Rome for his stolen bicycle, which he needs to be able to work. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Luigi Bartolini and was adapted for the screen by Cesare Zavattini. It stars Lamberto Maggiorani as the father and Enzo Staiola as the son.

You should bike in. It is better for your health, the environment and for the city as a whole (pedestrian level retail, eyes on the street = safety, slower speeds = safer, etc, etc, etc). Just remember to lock up your bike.

And try some cake. Warms the subcockles of even the coldest of hearts*.

On view in the Main and Euclid Avenue Galleries are works from the last decade by the celebrated second generation Abstract Expressionist sculptor Richard Hunt. Shaping the Spirit presents smaller bronze and stainless steel sculpture created within the last year, the artist's prints, and working and presentation maquettes of selected outdoor public commissions, including a proposal for Cleveland 's Settler's Landing Park from 1991.

Richard Hunt, who lives and works in Chicago, is the first African-American artist to receive a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art and has produced more publicly commissioned sculpture than any American artist. His career began in the late 1950s with national recognition and purchases by the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, when he was completing his studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1967, he had his first retrospectives at the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Milwaukee Art Center, followed in 1971 by a major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, that traveled to the Art Institute of Chicago. Hunt served on the National Council for the Arts (1968-74) at the request of President Nixon and as a commissioner of the Smithsonian Institution's American Museum of Art (1980-88). He has received numerous honorary degrees, fellowships, and awards, and his work is held in major collections throughout the United States. Hunt's principal work changed to commissioned outdoor sculptures in 1967, and he has completed between two and six large scale commissions every year since, many for the city of Chicago and institutions across Illinois and the rest of the Midwest, as well as Ohio, California, Texas, Florida, South Carolina, Missouri, and Tennessee.

Shaping the Spirit is the first presentation of Hunt's sculpture in this region since his 1986 exhibition at Youngstown State University. Hunt's Cleveland ties began in the 1960s when his first bronzes were cast in the Flats at the Studio Foundry, then owned by Ron Dewey. Light Sculpture Works, Dewey's second foundry, has recently supervised the casting of Hunt's smaller stainless steel sculptures. His bronze sculpture Sentimental Scale and Wedge (1977), a commission by Cuyahoga County for The Justice Center, can be seen in downtown Cleveland on West Third Street between St. Claire Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard. The Cleveland Museum of Art holds in its collection the maquette for this piece as well as three of his sculptures and a number of prints. Hunt served as the first juror of The Sculpture Center's annual exhibition of small sculpture in 2004.

Cleveland State has a lot of building going on.
I still think the Gwathmey project is weak. The NBBJ education building will be quite nice. Both have broken ground along Euclid. The proposed Euclid Ave. student housing is disturbingly weak architecturally. Hackneyed, formulalic, kitschy, schlock. While the project should function strongly urbanistically, the architecture of the project is horribly banal. Considering the quality of architecture Cleveland State is at least attempting to push, its quite disappointing that they picked an architect/developer team for this project who is playing it so... bland. see more images here.
