In addition, we will be featuring furniture from local designers Objeti, Bauhaus Builders and Bomb Factory Furniture in lounge areas throughout the space.

2011 AIA Cleveland Architecture + Design Month

AIA Cleveland, a Chapter of the American Institute of Architects will present the 2011 Architecture + Design Month events from April 1st - April 21st to recognize Northeast Ohio architects and designers, along with related programming highlighting the issues facing the design in Northeast Ohio.

The ‘homebase’ for events throughout the month is the beautifully renovated former Ever Ready Power House at Battery Park, a residential development overlooking Lake Erie in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood of Cleveland, OH, at 7524 Father Frascati Avenue Cleveland, OH.

Highlights of the month include: An exhibit of work from Surplus Rising, a research project from Oberlin based artist Julia Christensen mapping the narrative of factory machines – where they were made, where they operated before their respective factories shut down, and what countries they are headed to in their next life; a display of the 2010 AIA Ohio and AIA Cleveland Design Awards and winning submissions from the D3 Housing Tomorrow international design competition which investigates alternative housing typologies that boldly postulate new strategies for living in the future. Other events include a panel discussion hosted by AIGA Cleveland, a public tour of the under-renovation Cleveland Public Theatre, a showing of the movie A Constructive Madness, co-directed by local filmmaker Tom Ball, featuring the relationship between Frank Gehry and Peter Lewis, as they spent 10 years and a lot of money not building a house in suburban Cleveland, PechaKucha Night Cleveland Volume 12, and a discussion hosted by Michael McBride on the Cleveland Green Building Standard, which has been adopted for all new residential construction in the City of Cleveland, that should of interest to architects, builders, and homeowners alike. In addition to the aforementioned programming, partner organizations for the month include the Cleveland Goes Modern exhibit Don Hisaka: The Cleveland Years and various other lectures and panel discussions.

Civic Minded: The Re-Use Of Pittsburgh's Civic Arena

A few colleagues of mine from Pittsburgh, partly inspired by POST's All You Can Eat exhibition last fall, and in particular an entry that probed a possible re-use (that wasn't even designed by an architect! )for Pittsburgh's soon to be torn down Civic Arena, along with present issues in Pittsburgh, have organized a nice looking competition around just that idea. How to re-use a now "obsolete" sports arena that is being replaced by a shinier, 'greener', more expensive facility set to open next door, this fall.

PRESERVATION PITTSBURGH ANNOUNCES

DESIGN COMPETITION FOR CIVIC ARENA

Preservation Pittsburgh announces a call for entries for [CIVIC MINDED] Minding the

Future of the Civic Arena, a design competition intended to generate adaptive reuse ideas

for the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, PA.

In Fall 2010, the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins franchise will move to the newly constructed

Consol Energy Center, vacating the distinctive stainless steel dome of the Mellon Arena,

formerly named the Civic Arena. A growing number of concerned citizens and preservation

groups, including Preservation Pittsburgh, believe that demolition is not the answer, and

that the Civic Arena could be successfully repurposed.

“Through the power of imagination, we hope to engage the community and demonstrate to

the local and state political leadership that the Arena should remain,” said Preservation

Pittsburgh board member Peter Margittai. “This design competition will provide a forum

for those ideas and generate a dialogue about the adaptive reuse of the Civic Arena.”

Completed in 1961, the Civic Arena is sited on 28 acres of the Lower Hill District, a

neighborhood adjacent to Downtown Pittsburgh. Its retractable dome pushed the limits of

engineering and was originally built to house the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera. It remains

unique in the world as a distinct Pittsburgh icon for its technical achievements and

innovation. It is also eligible to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places. But

there is mixed public opinion about the history, significance, and symbolism of the Civic

Arena. The Arena was among the first projects to introduce the national planning approach

of Urban Renewal. Its development demolished the Lower Hill District, displaced 8,000

residents, separated the historic Hill community from Downtown, and contributed to the

economic collapse of the Hill District.

Three years ago, the Sports and Exhibition Authority (SEA) announced its Memorandum of

Understanding (MOU) with the Pittsburgh Penguins regarding the construction of a new

arena. Among other things, one of the terms listed in the MOU states, “Upon the opening of

the new arena, the SEA, at its expense, shall promptly demolish Mellon Arena and pave,

stripe and in all respects prepare the land under Mellon Arena for use as a parking lot. This

use shall continue until the land under the Mellon Arena is developed. Upon completion of

this work, the Penguins shall pay an additional $200,000/year over the life of the lease.”

The SEA made its agreement to demolish the Civic Arena without any public input.

Scott Leib, President of Preservation Pittsburgh states, “We are doing what the SEA should

have done years ago. We are hosting a design competition as a way to generate fresh ideas

for how the Civic Arena can be reused.” Leib continues, “Preservation is a resource, not a

roadblock, for great economic development. With necessary input from diverse

communities, we believe a unique, stunning, economically viable destination can be created

that will serve our region well into the future.”

Preservation Pittsburgh is seeking creative ideas for an adaptive reuse of the Civic Arena – a

structure with conflicting legacies as both a monument to Pittsburgh’s engineering prowess

and a symbol of past human injustices. Complete registration information and submission

CUDC Book Release Party for Water|Craft

BOOK RELEASE PARTY FOR WATER|CRAFT

Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative’s latest publication, Urban Infill vol. 3: Water|Craft, is out, and we'd like to welcome everyone to the book release party scheduled for July 14th.

Urban Infill is an imprint of CUDC, and these anthologies examine themes in contemporary urban design, urban architecture and planning that emerge from the challenges posed by the economic and ecological transformations of the 21st century.

Water|Craft is a collection of essays that look at urban and regional water issues and new design approaches. The impetus for this volume was the CUDC's experiences in working with the volatile urban situation of Cleveland; a fragile economy, aging infrastructure and damaged ecosystem. Within this context, water plays a critical role in revitalization efforts for the region. Water|Craft highlights water-related best practices, particularly about water infrastructure made visible as a form-giver and a design driver. It includes several articles about water-based urban initiatives here in Cleveland, as well as a few national and international projects. Major funding for this volume was provided by The George Gund Foundation with additional support from the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District.

Live Debate Regarding The Ever Controversial Legacy Of The Architectural Style Known As Brutalism

Due to rapidly diminishing attendance, 1/3 Movie Night has been indefinitely suspended. In it’s place, POST will produce a monthly piece of filmed entertainment for inclusion on the POST blog. This will take place on the third Thursday of every month. For the first installment, we will be presenting a live debate in the style of ESPN’s “Around the Horn.” For those unfamiliar with this program, it’s format involves a moderator presenting questions to four participants, each of whom are assigned (and unassigned) points for their responses purely at the discretion of the moderator, who may also “mute” respondants in order to move on with the discussion. Our show will concern architecture rather than sports.

In what is sure to be a lively and heated debate this Thursday, a group of local design geeks will discuss the legacy of the much-maligned architectural style known as Brutalism. Brutalism, as defined by the participants, is a style that dominated architectural practice in Europe and the Americas from the late ’50s until the early ’70s. Major local examples include an addition to the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Ameritrust Tower designed by Hungarian-born Marcel Breuer, the metropolitan campuses of Cuyahoga Community College and Cleveland State University, along with numerous schools built for the Cleveland Municipal School District during the period in question.

Slap Shot is a 1977 film starring Paul Newman and Michael Ontkean and was directed by George Roy Hill. It depicts a minor league hockey team who discover that violent play makes them heroes to their declining factory town.

The movie focuses on a fictional team called the Charlestown Chiefs, who are members of the fictional Federal League. The team, a perennial loser and in financial trouble due to mill closings in the town, is due to be folded at season's end. Reggie Dunlop, the veteran player-coach (played by Newman), has no idea who the owner of the team is.

Cleveland Design Competition Project 2009: Lakefront Station Awards

I was able to attend the Cleveland Design Competition Project 2009: Lakefront Station Awards on Friday night at the Colonial Arcade. As always, Michael Christoff and Bradley Fink, the event organizers put on a great competition and an even better awards reception. It is always encouraging for the design culture of Cleveland to see this event, now in its third year, get more and more attention, both locally and internationally. All of the entries will stay up for public viewing in the space through February 19th, during regular hours for the arcade.

For whatever reason it is a huge struggle to get people within the design community to come out for events that are supposed for the design community in Cleveland, but it always seems much easier to get the general public that has a passing interest in design or the built environment to come out. Friday night was the first time in my three or so years in Cleveland that I was at an event this heavily attended not only by the public, but also many architects, designers, politicians, developers, and others in Cleveland that play large roles in shaping the future of the city.

While I was a little surprised by the projects the jury selected as winners, it has less to do with their individual merits, and more to do with my personal views. I would have liked to see projects that engaged issues that are unique to Cleveland in their final solutions, rather then a reliance on large formal gestures (however beautiful they may be). My personal favorite of the winners is the third place entry, by Russell Collin of London, which is the only project of the winners that begins to break down the scale of the quite difficult site in a meaningful way.

Never the less, kudos to all involved!

About American Splendor:

is a 2003 biopic about Harvey Pekar, the author of theAmerican Splendor comic book series. The film is also in part an adaptation of the comics, which dramatize Pekar's life. The film was written and directed by documentarians Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, who share writing credit with Pekar and his wife, Joyce Brabner.^[1] It stars Paul Giamatti as Pekar and Hope Davis as Brabner. However, it also features appearances from Pekar and Brabner themselves (along withToby Radloff), who discuss their lives, the comic books, and how it feels to be depicted onscreen by actors. It was filmed entirely on location in Cleveland and Lakewood in Ohio.

About: Exploration of natural systems from the microscopic to the universal provides vast potential for overlaying cultural, ecological, and life cycle flows towards determining new architectonic strategies.

The d3 Natural Systems international architectural design competition called for investigative proposals advancing sustainable thought and performance through the study of intrinsic environmental geometries, behaviors and flows. By identifying, examining, and applying their structural order on form function - bottom-up, performance based solutions for limitless building typologies, functional programs, and material conditions may be realized.

d3 is an organization committed to advancing innovative positions in architecture, art, and design by providing collaborative environments for architects, artists, designers, and students from throughout New York City and around the world. Its expaning program of exhibitions, events, and publications is focused on generating dialogue across geographic, ideological, and disciplinary boundaries in art and the built environment.

Earlier this year, a common collaborator of mine, Ryan deBiase and I, partnered on a (satirical) project, Cleveland 3.1 by FABNEO, that was presented at Pecha Kucha Night Cleveland, Vol. 2, at the House of Blues.

A slideshow version of the project now exists on the web, for your viewing pleasure.

As Ryan asks on his blog, if anyone out there happens to have a full video recording of the PKN presentation, let us know. As far as we know, none exists.

All You Can Eat: A Buffet of Architectural Ideas for Cleveland

Exhibition Opening

Exhibit is up for Friday and Saturday only!

The organizers of an upcoming exhibition at the Sculpture Center, titled All You Can Eat: A Buffet of Architectural Ideas For Cleveland, are pleased to announce the show's opening event, to be held Friday, October 30th from 5 - 10PM and Saturday, October 31st from Noon - 5PM. All You Can Eat is a collective exhibition of architectural ideas for vacant sites in Cleveland, Ohio.

If Cleveland has a surplus of anything it's vacant land, and the organizers have faith that others, like them, have favorite sites around the city upon which they'd love to unleash their new (or old) tricks. This exhibition hopes to provide the impetus and opportunity for many to unleash said tricks in a publicly visible way. Friday's event will feature a buffet of tasty treats for both your stomach and your intellect. As well, DJ Jose Alberto Luna will be providing audio treats for your ears of his own creation throughout Friday evening.

All You Can Eat is not intended to generate "shovel-ready" proposals but to instigate dialogue; it is a f

forum to encourage the development of new concepts both aesthetic and programmatic. The organizers charge participants with being as outlandish and uncompromising as they can be.

The organizers would also like to announce the lineup for a panel discussion to be held Saturday at 3PM, moderated by Michael Abrahamson of POST, including:

Julia Christensen is the author of the critically-acclaimed book Big Box Reuse (MIT Press), which is about the reuse of abandoned big box buildings in the United States. She is the Henry Luce Visiting Professor of the Emerging Arts at Oberlin College. Ms. Christensen lectures widely about urban design, the future of the built environment, and the impact of vacated commercial real estate. She is invited to speak by universities, real estate corporations, city councils, community groups, and more; she is also asked to consult on reuse projects across the country. Ms. Christensen is the founder and leader of The Big Box Reuse Group, LLC, a consulting firm that draws on her experience documenting and analyzing dozens of reclaimed commercial real estate sites nationwide. Her photography, video, architectural installation, and new media art work has shown internationally, at venues such as the Walker Art Center, the Carnegie Museum of Fine Arts, and the Lincoln Center.

Piet Van Dijk, FAIA, is an immigrant from the Netherlands. He served two years in the US Army and has a Masters Degree from MIT. He also was a Fulbright scholar to Italy. Van Dijk worked for four years with Eero Saarinen and Associates in Michigan. He came to Cleveland in 1961 to design the Celebreeze Federal Building and became a partner in the Cleveland firm that is now Westlake Reed Leskosky. Van Dijk has been responsible for the design of dozens of buildings including hospitals, offices, and universities. He has especially enjoyed designing projects for the performing arts such as Blossom Music Center, The Denver Arts Center, and the CSU Music building. He also designed CSU's physical education building featuring an Olympic sized pool. A world champion Masters Swimmer, Piet has also received the AIA Ohio Gold Medal and the Cleveland Arts Prize.

Marc Ciccarelli, AIA serves as a principal partner for studioTECHNE|architects, responsible for project and firm management, planning, design, project research and client development. He works directly with clients during Programming and Design, providing innovative solutions in a collaborative approach to preserve the unique goals and characteristics of each client. He believes the best design solutions arrive from an interactive dialog of ideas and information, which allows for rational design solutions and effective decisions relating to budget and schedule. The firm's dedication to exceptionally designed environments is rooted in the belief that the buildings constructed for our clients exist in a context and must positively effect the environment in which they exist. Additionally, the built environment has an enormous impact on the social and physical places we inhabit. Owing to this, Marc leads the office research efforts on sustainability, education and the built environment, and lectures to groups and boards across the country on human interaction in built and perceptual space.

Sally L. Levine, AIA, principal of Levine Architecture & Design, Ltd., is an architect, educator and artist. When she moved back to Cleveland in 2001, Sally brought her practice to Cleveland as Levine Architecture & Design, Ltd., a multi-disciplinary architecture studio that approaches its work from a human-centered perspective. Currently, Sally is a lecturer teaching a two-semester architectural studio sequence at Case Western Reserve University, and she is a visiting faculty associate in the University's Center for Health and Aging. In addition, she is a lecturer at CSU's Maxine Goodman Levin School of Planning Master's Program teaching the urban design seminar. With colleague David Ellison, AIA, Sally has organized three architecture exhibits for Cleveland's Ingenuity Festivals, and she has created a nationally traveling exhibit called Palladio's Sister. Sally's own artwork has been exhibited in solo and group exhibits from San Francisco to Milan, Italy. She has lectured throughout the US and in France and Spain.

Marc Manack is an Architect born and raised in Canton, Ohio. Since 2001, Manack has been an Architect with Robert Maschke Architects in Cleveland, Ohio where he has been responsible for the design and realization of numerous award winning projects. In 2006, Manack co-founded SILO AR+D (pronounced R+D) to explore architectural projects with an approach that is experimental without being ostentatious. Manack has taught design studios at Kent State University College of Architecture and Environmental Design and currently teaches at Ohio State University's Austin E. Knowlton School of Architecture.

Matthew Setzekorn, PE, CBCP, LEED® AP, is Director of Sustainable Engineering at Integrated Engineering Consultants, Inc. He is a member of the Northeast Ohio USGBC High Performance Building Committee and an active participant in multiple LEED projects as the Engineer of Record and also the Commissioning Authority. Matthew is also a lecturer in Environmental Technology at the College of Architecture and Environmental Design of Kent State University.

Panel moderator Michael Abrahamson is a designer and critic currently based in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the very first graduate in architectural criticism from the Ohio State University's Knowlton School of Architecture, and received a Bachelor of Architecture with honors from Kent State University. He has published criticism in trace and Log in addition to maintaining a polytropic web log, Critic Under the Influence. His collaborative design work has been exhibited at 1point618 gallery in Cleveland, and, with Theodore Ferringer and Jeremy Smith, has organized the All You Can Eat exhibition.

About American Astronaut:

is a 2001 space-western/musical, directed by and starring Cory McAbee. The film was released on DVD in Spring of 2005. The band Billy Nayer Show, helmed by McAbee, wrote and performed the film's soundtrack

The film is set in a fictitious past, in which space travel is pioneered by roughnecks. The logic of space travel isn't addressed, and most technology was designed for the film to appear as if "it could be repaired with a hammer". Samuel Curtis, an interplanetary trader, is approached by an acquaintance of his, the Blueberry Pirate, with a mission. He is to provide the women of Venus with a new king for mating. In exchange for this new stud, they will relinquish their currently deceased king, whose family is offering an immense reward for his body. Curtis sets off in search for the perfect replacement, the Boy Who Actually Saw a Woman's Breast, but is unaware of the fact that his old nemesis, Professor Hess, is hot on his trail.

Made In The 216 Sneak Preview

I was fortunate enough to get a special sneak peak of Room Service's Made In The 216 event going on this Friday and Saturday in Gordon Square / Detroit Shoreway / whatever the proper branding name of that area is, last night. (Thanks Danielle!)

What I particularly enjoy about the event is not only its ability to feature Cleveland based designers, but also how the event acts as a form of urban design, utilizing a vacant storefront in the neighborhood, as well as having the event spilling out into the street, with bands and food. Festival urbanism, or spectacle urbanism, if you will, allows people to escape the day to day rhythms of the life of the street and imagine new possibilities and potentials for how the city can be used. All the more inspiring is how the event if is effectively the work of one person, Room Service owner, Danielle DeBoe. Just goes to show the power each of us have to effect our environment if one has the motivation to do so.

As the designers go, if you plan on going, you better plan on bringing benjamins because there are a lot of great things. And I mean A LOT. I was going to list them, but it got ridicilious quickly. So just see the postcards below.

The MADE IN THE 216 event was created by ROOM SERVICE (RS) Owner, Danielle DeBoe to highlight just how many talented designers are choosing to STAY and build their businesses in CLEVELAND; And to underscore their high level of talent by merchandising the Cleveland-made designs seamlessly amongst the items purchased by NYC, LONDON, LA, SAN FRANCISCO and PARIS-based designers. There are no ‘booths’ or traditional craft/trade show set ups that differentiate the designers’ wares. They are integrated in the same creative, narrative-driven way that RS merchandises their products year round.
