Locker Clean-Out

ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS!!!!! All belongings should be removed from lockers by the end of the day, Tuesday, May 21st. Students are responsible for removing everything, including stickers and other decorations. Locks must be removed by the end of that day also.

Rockwood South Student Shines in Math

Alan Peng, a seventh-grade student at Rockwood South Middle School, has much to celebrate with regard to his math performance this year. Recently, Peng earned a first place finish on the Missouri team at the National MATHCOUNTS Competition held in Washington, DC. Peng qualified for the competition after finishing third in the Missouri competition, and his performance at the national event earned him a 29th place overall finish. While at the competition, Peng helped set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest time to assemble the first 25 rows of Pascal’s triangle as a human formation. In addition to these accomplishments, Peng earned a perfect score of 800 on the math section of the SAT when he took the exam alongside of high school students earlier this school year. As a 12-year-old student, Peng has a gift for math.

Lisa Smarr, math teacher and math contest cub sponsor, described Peng as a driven student who often challenges himself by completing math problems from various math contests and books. “Alan is very focused on his math skills and he is able to do most of the problems quickly in his head,” said Smarr. “He has a special talent for math and we are proud of what he has accomplished.”

Next year, Peng plans to take calculus for college credit. Smarr said she’s helped connect him with college professors that take math teams to contests and international competitions. “Hopefully we can continue to challenge him and guide him as he strengthens his skills.”

On May 16, Peng will be recognized for his academic achievements at the Board of Education Awards Ceremony.

Student Medication in Nurse's Office

The end of the school year is approaching. In keeping with the Rockwood School District Medication Policy, no medication may be sent home with a student. You will need to make arrangements for an adult to pick up any remaining medication. This may be you, a relative, friend or neighbor. There are no exceptions and medications may not be sent by mail. Medication that is not picked up by the end of the last school day will be disposed of according to DEA regulations. - Debra R. Smith, RN, BSN

End of year Library Fines

The library’s final due date for students is Thursday, May 16. Students will not be allowed to check out books after this day. Eighth-grade students who have fines and/or overdue books must clear library account to receive a receipt to purchase tickets for their Six Flags field trip. If students have any questions about their library accounts please see Mrs. Griffard or Mrs. Nichols.

SPEAKER FROM MADD

“How to Talk to Your Son/Daughter About Alcohol” – on May 22nd, at the same time as the 8th Grade Falcon Blast, a guest speaker from MADD will give 2 presentations – one from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. and one from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Summit Library, (so you can attend when you drop your student off, or before picking your student up). The transition to high school is SUCH an important time to make sure you are doing all you can, as parents, to address the topic of drug use and underage drinking. This presentation is intended to provide parents with strategies to address this important topic in a straightforward way with your teen. Hosted by Mrs. Corsair, 8th Grade Counselor. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Mrs. Corsair in the Guidance Office AND which time frame you prefer.

On May 1st the order window closes and a sign up list is started and this does NOT guarantee your child a yearbook. This only creates a first come first serve availability if there are any books left over. Please drop off form and put your name on the waiting list in our front office.

Walking and Bus Passes

Please send a note with your student or call our office if your student has a change in transportation after school. According to policy, bus passes and walking notes WILL NOT BE issued on early release days unless there is a supervision concern. If your child wants to walk to and from school every day, or is going to be picked up every day by a parent please send a note to the front office (if you haven't done so already for the school year) and their name will be added to the daily walker/parent pick up list. Students must decide whether to utilize bus transportation or walk, the choice cannot be made day by day without a pass from the office.

RSMS CARNIVAL

The annual carnival will be held here at our school Friday, May 3rd, 2013 from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. Bring all the kids for games galore, inflatables, entertainment and food. This event is sponsored by PSO and other school organizations and clubs.

Congratulations to our 8th Grade Band

The 8th grade band competed this weekend at the Worlds of Fun Festival of Music in Kansas City. They received straight "1" ratings from all three judges and took first place in our division. They made RSMS proud with their performance, but more importantly, with the way they represented our school with their behavior. They were commended on their behavior from the hotel staff, the bus drivers, and the servers at the restaurant.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week, don’t miss the final Falcon Players Play Production of the Season, THINGS FALL (MEANWHILE)! The play is performed in Rockwood South’s Black Box Theatre space, Room #108. Tickets are on sale Monday through Friday in the cafeteria during lunch or you can buy your tickets at the door! $3 dollars for students and $5 for adults. Don’t miss it! All proceeds benefit the Falcon Players!

DESE Parent Survey: Services for Special Education

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is gathering information from parents who have a child(ren) who receives special education services.

Below is a link to a copy of the survey with two options for submission: online or mail. This survey is confidential; individual responses are not shared with the school district or anyone else.

All surveys should be completed by May 10, 2013.

Kudos to Coach Forcelledo

Seventh grade PE Coach Anna Forcelledo participated in the Boston Marathon, Monday, April 15th. She has been training for months. Today her mission was accomplished in 3:35 17 (time) running an 8:12 pace for the race. We are very proud of you, Anna!

News Update: Dr. Linda Miller sent a Blackboard Connect email message to parents this evening letting everyone know that Coach Forcelledo is safe after the news of the explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

Dear Parents:

As many of you know, Ms. Forcelledo, our seventh-grade PE teacher, ran the Boston Marathon today. I am happy to share with you that she is safe and finished the marathon in 3 hours and 35 minutes.

I want to thank you for showing your concern for her health and safety in light of the recent news of explosions near the Boston Marathon finish line. We are sending our thoughts and prayers to everyone in Boston this evening.
