Restoring and replacing the Airstream RV mattress is a unique challenge due to its unique shape and size. The Airstream beds usually have a curve at the head and rounded end corners. The radius varies and must be taken into account. How to measure your Airstream RV mattress:

• First, measure the bed foundation (usually a plywood board) instead of the mattress, which has probably changed shape in its old age.
• Then use a tape measure and get the length and width of the bed’s foundation, as well as the height of your old mattress.
• Since the mattress has rounded corners, measure the length of each side of the plywood and draw a simple sketch going from the top to the end. This is the drawing you give to us.
• (If you have height restrictions, measure from the resting area to the highest vertical point where the mattress rests on the side rails vertical to the highest point of the foot board.)

RV beds come in different types of latex, foam, and memory foam. Natural botanical latex mattresses may be a great choice if you are sensitive to allergies and chemicals.

Standard foam mattresses are fairly inexpensive. But they will compress and dent over time, and they are petroleum based (though some carriers make them with green options).

The newer memory foam mattresses, though more costly (that standard foam), keep their shape, are antibacterial and hypoallergenic, and dust mite free. Feel free to call Dave at 801-360-9009 to speak with our RV mattress specialist before selecting your replacement RV mattress.

1. Width - In order to get the correct width measurement you need to take a tape measure and measure from one side to the other of the area where the mattress will be placed.  Take care to measure the inside since that is where the mattress will go.
2. Length - Here you will take your tape measure and measure from the top to the bottom of the area where your new custom mattress will be placed.  Again, be sure to measure the inside and not the outside of this area.
3. Height - It is possible that your mattress bed platform area has a height range it can manage.  You will measure this by taking your tape measure and measure the inside of this area from the bottom vertically to the top.  There may be a couple of inches of leeway to work with, but that will depend on where the rv mattress will put your body in relation to the ceiling of your RV.

If your mattress area is not square, there is another way to accomplish getting the right custom made mattress for your recreational vehicle.  You will simply make a blueprint of your mattress area by finding your Airstream floor plan online and drawing it out with the measurements as described above.  You can also measure the radius to get the proper specifications on your mattress area for getting your custom rv bed.  You may need a standard caliper for rounded edges or a protractor for angled edges.  You can obtain these at any home improvement store.

Once you get your measurements or blueprint done you will then send in your specifications to get your custom rv mattress for your Airstream RV.  It will make a big difference from the mattress you are sleeping on now during your travels.

Memory foam mattresses and latex mattresses are becoming extremely popular because of their many benefits.  Memory foam has been used in the medical industry for decades.  Latex foam has been around since 1929, but has recently gained a lot of momentum.

Customers are pleased with memory foam mattresses and latex mattresses more than traditional innerspring, air, or water mattresses.  Although these mattresses are similar, there are also several differences.

Latex foam mattresses are more resilient and have a higher elasticity than memory foam mattresses.  Simply put, latex mattresses have a more ’springy’ feeling to them, while memory foam mattresses are more solid-feeling.  Latex foam mattresses have a higher responsiveness to them.  It takes longer to change positions on a memory foam mattress because memory foam isn’t as responsive as latex foam.

Latex mattresses are also manufactured naturally because latex is found in nature from the rubber tree.  Memory foam is a chemically-produced substance.  Latex mattresses are made from natural rubber trees while memory foam is created in a lab out of polyurethane.  Because latex mattresses are organic, they are also naturally hypoallergenic, anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, and dust-mite resistant.

Both latex mattresses and memory foam mattresses reduce pressure points significantly.  Neither of these mattresses uses annoying springs or coils that can end up poking you throughout the night.  Latex mattresses and memory foam mattresses distribute your body weight evenly.  The distribution of body weight is the main factor for reducing pressure points.

The main difference between latex foam mattresses and memory foam mattresses is that latex foam mattresses allow you to change positions and get comfortable faster than memory foam mattresses do.  It doesn’t take long to get comfortable on a memory foam mattress, but a latex mattress lets you find comfort a little bit faster.  Memory foam mattresses and latex mattresses are both extremely comfortable and have many great benefits.

The problem with these beds is that they can cause some back pain. Innerspring mattresses are the most common mattress used with bunk beds and murphy beds. Additionally, bunk bed/murphy bed innerspring mattresses are thinner than regular innerspring mattresses, so they are bound to offer less support and comfort.

The most important thing to consider when buying a bunk bed or murphy bed is how the bed is made. Good quality beds tend to cause less back pain than poor quality beds. Research the best brands of bunk beds and murphy beds before making your purchase. Read customer reviews to see which beds receive better customer satisfaction ratings. Lately, foam mattresses have been being used for bunk beds and murphy beds. These beds don’t offer the most ideal support system (because they have to stay compact) it is better to use a foam mattress. Foam mattresses can eliminate back pain by reducing pressure points. Foam mattresses can also keep the back and spine properly aligned while resting (something that innerspring mattresses cannot offer).

Sleeping on a bunk bed or murphy bed does not have to be uncomfortable. Your comfort should absolutely not be jeopardized just because you need a compact bed. Foam mattresses are the perfect thing to eliminate back pain with a bunk bed or murphy bed. Be sure to choose a top-quality foam mattress. Cheap foam mattresses don’t provide any support or added benefits. You don’t have to suffer from back pain just because you sleep on a murphy bed or bunk bed. Purchase a good quality bunk bed or murphy bed with a top quality memory foam mattress to reduce and eliminate back pain.

Sleep is one of the most important aspects of your life.  The average person sleeps about one-third of his/her entire life.  The recommended length of sleep per day is 8 hours, or 1/3 of every day.  Too many people don’t get the sleep they need.  This drastically affects every aspect of one’s life.

Dr. Bert Jacobson is a Professor at Oklahoma State University.  He says, “Sleep deprivation impacts us physically, which can negatively affect our coordination, agility, mood, and energy.  For the ‘average’ person, out research shows that better sleep quality can be as simple as a new mattress.”

Oklahoma State University recently conducted an interesting sleep study.  They found that a new mattress provides sleepers with significant improvements when compared to sleeping on a mattress that was five years old or older.  These improvements include:

-70.8 percent increase in sleep comfort
-62.0 percent increase in sleep quality
-55.3 percent decrease in back pain
-50.7 percent decrease in spine stiffness

A new mattress really can make the difference between a good night’s sleep and a terrible one.  Don’t let your body take the brunt of sleep deprivation any longer.  New mattresses are inexpensive and definitely worth the investment.  Latex foam mattresses are the most popular type of mattress.  Memory foam mattresses come in second with air mattresses and waterbeds tying for fourth place.  Innerspring mattresses aren’t as popular when it comes to comfort but are still widely available because they are so inexpensive.

Countless studies have been conducted that show the link between sleep and physical performance.  The Better Sleep Council recently conducted a nationwide survey.  Here are some direct statistics from the Better Sleep Council (BSC):

-”Respondents getting nine hours of sleep or more are more likely to engage in higher-intensity workouts (biking, running, weight lifting, etc).”
-”Seven in 10 (or 70 percent) report that they are not getting the recommended amount of sleep needed each night (7.5 hours or more) to perform at their best each day.”

Dr. Bert Jacobson, a professor and the head of the School of Educational Studies at Oklahoma State University said, “Sleep deprivation impacts us physically, which can negatively affect our coordination, agility, mood and energy.  Research shows that sleeping better and longer leads to improvements in athletic performance, including faster sprint time, better endurance, lower heart rate and even improved mood and higher levels of energy during a workout.”

The key to getting enough sleep is having the right mattress.  Survey respondents agreed that they are able to sleep better and longer on a new mattress, rather than an old one.  Eighty-one percent of Americans admit that they wake up with neck, back or shoulder pain.

The thing to keep in mind is that you don’t have to live like this.  It is extremely smart to invest in a good quality mattress.  You should be sleeping on a mattress that helps you sleep instead of one that causes you to toss and turn all night long.  The BSC recommends that you evaluate and replace your mattress every 5-7 years to enjoy optimal comfort and support.

Sleep does directly affect your physical performance.  If your physical performance is severely lacking, you might want to take a look at the amount and quality of sleep that you get.

In September 2009, I did an extensive search for a new queen size mattress for our motor home. The two year old mattress that came in the RV was killing my back. I hated to travel because of the bad sleep I would have. Due to chronic lower back pain, I was prepared to invest in what was supposedly the top of the line memory foam mattress. After trying them out in a local store, I got on line and found Rocky Mountain Mattress. Andrew helped me put together a custom 9″ mattress that would be good for my back, yet fit in the limited 9″ height space available in the motor home. The best part is that it was roughly 1/3 the price of Brand-T, or is that Brand-X?

Two weeks later the mattress arrived. I used it on a business trip the next few nights and slept better than I do at home on our sleep number bed. My wife and I have taken two more trips since the first one with the same results. The only problem I now have is getting her out of bed in the mornings! The matress is so comfortable. The good part is my back doesn’t hurt when I wake up in the morning.

This past week, I ordered 4 more mattresses from RMM: 1 custom to replace the sleep number bed, 1 other custom, and two standard beds. I guess you could say we are convinced you have a fine product and at a reasonable price.

THANK YOU FOR THE LATEX TOPPER!!!!! We tried it out and it is really wonderful. It fixed the problems we were having with a supposedly quality mattress, and we are very, very happy. It’s nice to know there’s an option for success in an industry that is very haphazard in its guidelines and marketing.

I received the new 8″ memory foam mattress and installed it yesterday in my Airstream. It fits perfectly and is at least twice the weight of the old mattress and 100 times more comfortable. I thought it was too small until I cut open the shipping bag when it expanded like a marshmallow.
Thanks again for your help. Now the Airstream has the mattress it should come with from the factory!!!

I received the cover and put it on today.  I must say I’m very impressed with the quality of the cover.  The fabric feels sturdy but supple and the zipper on 3 sides made putting it on much easier.   And the comfort of the latex topper has been superb.  I wasn’t sure how effective it would be over my old mattress, but I couldn’t be more please.
