Many people are excited to receive their high quality memory foam mattress or toppers, but become concerned when they first get them because they often give off a distinct smell after manufacturing. Have no fear. This is perfectly natural and while some individuals have sensitive olfactory senses, the smell is not an indication that there are any kind of dangerous chemicals in your mattress. We’ll break it all down for you; why it smells, and how to properly clean your memory foam mattress or topper.

Memory foam is made of polyurethane and this is why when it’s brand new it often has a distinct chemical-like odor. This smell has been described by some as being similar to fresh paint. Because it smells like this many individuals worry that they’re inhaling toxic fumes or chemicals, but this is not necessarily the case. Yes, the smell is produced by the type of material creating the highly dense and elastic material, but the gas emissions from the types of products creating the material are so small that they’re harmless.
Letting your new memory foam mattress or topper air out once you first get it will help considerably. While it airs out it will have a distinct odor that may fill a majority of the room at first, but be assured that this will start to go away, and eventually leave all together.

There are far more positives to owning a memory foam mattress that outweigh the negatives to be concerned about the smell. So many health issues can be resolved including joint and muscles aches, problems with the spinal column, and because the foam doesn’t allow for dust mites or mildew it controls allergies and asthma incredibly well too.

If you do find that you’re a little more sensitive to the smell than others there are ways to properly clean your mattress. It’s very important that you don’t clean your mattress like any other materials or fabrics you’re used to cleaning, which often include water-based cleaners. In fact, cleaning memory foam is done with a dry-cleaning technique that’s very simple and will remove any moisture to continue helping the memory foam from harboring bacteria and mildew.

Using baking soda and allowing for it to sit and absorb odors, moisture from sweat or body oils can refresh and keep your memory foam lasting much longer than any other type of mattress or pillow. For a great visual guide on how to clean your memory foam check out this video below!

Rocky Mountain Mattress celebrated Independence Day this past year by partnering with the Mark Forester Foundation for this award earlier. In accordance with Independence Day, this award was patriotic in nature. It included an essay contest for eligible students who submitted works with “Honoring the Heroes” as the central theme.

Thad Forester, of The Mark Forester Foundation and a panel judge for the essay contest said of the winner,
“She seemed to have the most intimate connection with the military, between her grandfather, who served for 30 years, and her father and brother who are both actively involved in law enforcement, her empathy and sincere appreciation for everyday heroes shined through.”

Mark A. Forester, a Senior Airman, is the inspiration for the scholarship. He was killed in Afghanistan while attempting to save a fallen comrade. His heroic story is what both Rocky Mountain Mattress and the Mark Forester Foundation asked contestants to keep in mind as they crafted their essays.

Any student who would be enrolled in a college during 2013 was eligible to submit an essay to this scholarship contest. Contestants submitted works of 300-500 words in length and the competition was strong.

Rocky Mountain Mattress is a custom mattress company. They work with mattress experts and are dedicated not only to getting people the sleep they need, but making their lives a little more stress-free with great customer service. They also have a personal connection to the Mark Forester Foundation. This, as well as helping students to gain a valuable education, and honoring the men and women who sacrifice so much, are the motivations behind awarding this scholarship.

Congratulations to Lindsey Walters!

If you ask most new RV owners how they feel about the mattress that came with their brand-spanking-new RV you will likely hear a moan, groan, or some other unsatisfactory sound. Amazingly, RV’s that can cost upwards of $200,000 are likely sporting a cheap mattress (often times made in China) that cost the manufacturer less than $50.00.

How do I know this? My company, Rocky Mountain Mattress, occasionally attends RV shows around the U.S. and I have had many discussions with many different RV-manufacturer-folks about their beds! The good news is that you can effectively and affordably correct the situation with a little know how.

Custom RV Mattress by Rocky Mountain Mattress

Your first step should be to determine whether the bed can be made comfortable with a quality mattress topper. If you decide that you can salvage your ability to sleep by investing in a topper you need to now determine whether that topper should be made from a quality memory foam or latex. This infographic we designed might be helpful in making that choice http://www.rockymountainmattress.com/faq/memory-foam-vs-latex.php.

There are a lot of companies that will also be willing to custom cut your topper to fit an unusual RV mattress shape or size. My company will cut the foam for free and charge a small fee for customizing the mattress topper cover if you‘d like one, and we even offer free delivery for all orders within the United States!

If you decide that the mattress topper will not cut it, then custom making a new mattress means you can have the comfort, support, durability, and size that you need in a mattress for your RV. When it comes to what will fit in your space, it’s just a matter of taking some relatively simple measurements or contacting your manufacturer for a schematic (see instructions for working with Airstream here http://www.rockymountainmattress.com/faq/how-to-get-an-airstream-schematic.php). When it comes to comfort and your preferences, then you need to choose which types of materials will be best suited for your needs.

There are a wide variety of materials to meet your custom mattress needs, including memory foams, Dunlop and Talalay latexes, fabric options (CoolMax by Dupont, organic cotton, bamboo, etc.) and more. Now, if this is your first custom mattress purchase all of this information may be very overwhelming. Let’s discuss a few key things to remember when deciding on materials.

First, it’s important to remember that you purchased an RV for the sole purpose of taking the comforts of home with you wherever your travels may lead. This is why it’s important to have the proper support for the many pressure points along the body. You will also want a mattress that will last you a long time and be durable.

The most durable of materials is natural latex. This material often lasts the longest, (up to 20 years) and has an outstanding elasticity that will give great support while you sleep. It’s eco-friendly as well!

After being introduced to the market in the early 90’s, memory foam has become widely popular and for good reason. It’s excellent for its supporting qualities with a unique ability to absorb and support pressure only at the site of the pressure. Memory foam supports your body only where it’s needed reducing the amount of pressure forming elsewhere.

There are a lot of things to consider when it comes to purchasing a custom boat mattress and initially the process may seem a little overwhelming. I have made hundreds of custom boat mattresses and therefore have some insight on the process of purchasing a new mattress for your boat!

First, it’s important to determine if you could make do with the mattress you already have and simply purchase a mattress topper for added support and comfort. If this is not going to cut it, then it’s time to get a new mattress!

Next, you need to consider some technical but important issues when it comes to boat mattresses. These include weight, material that will last in a marine environment, and size.

Recently Created Custom Boat Mattress by Rocky Mountain Mattress

Weight is important and needs to be taken into consideration when purchasing a mattress for your boat. You will want to figure out the current weight of your mattress and go from there. Since there are many different types of materials and thicknesses in the industry to meet your needs, you will want to consider what the right balance between the weight of the mattress, measured in pounds per cubic foot, and the thickness needed for your support.

You will also want to consider the marine environment your mattress will be living in. Latex can be a great choice because the foam is naturally resistant to mold and mildew and because it breathes very well, which is good because the last thing you want on your boat is a large mildewing mattress. While there are rust resistant innersprings for some mattresses, which do cut down on the deterioration of a mattress, foam mattresses are more porous and can be made with anti-microbial materials. Therefore, memory foam and latex mattresses generally tend to absorb less moisture and are better suited for a damp environment.

When getting a custom cut mattress for your boat, Rocky Mountain Mattress, can customize and cut your mattress to fit any size you need.

There are many reasons to try building your own mattress. You might be looking to save some money, you may feel that many of the big mattress companies are cutting corners and you simply want to ensure that your mattress is made of only the best materials on earth, or you might simply want to attempt to build a mattress that has a unique feel custom-suited for yourself! Whatever the reason, it’s important that you get the right materials and comfort preference, and there is a lot of overwhelming information out there.

Rocky Mountain Mattress, features a line of mattresses with a zippered CoolMax cover, and several layers of individual pieces of foam. We can even custom size the cover and cut the foam layers to any size or shape if you are putting the mattress on a boat or RV. This method allows you to select the layers of foam you are interested in and then to arrange the layers for the firmness-preference you desire.

If you do decide to go with a foam mattress you will want to consider the type of foam to use, like latex or memory foam. You can find many threads on the subject right here at the rockymountainmattress.com site.

You also want to know what kind of foam density you are looking for. Foam density is measured by its weight in pounds per cubic foot. The higher the weight, the higher the density. Of course, you also need to look at the various IFD (internal force deflection) options to determine firmness. While you decide on firmness you should remember that there are major pressure points along your body, as well as your spine, that need to be supported for adequate rest at night. Mattresses which feature both a supportive base structure and a pressure-reducing specialty sleep top, memory foams for example, are excellent at supporting the spine while evenly reducing pressure on sensitive areas like shoulders and hips.

After considering density, firmness, durability and size, it ultimately comes down to what your preferences are in comfort. This is not only determined by what you want, but also by the positions you sleep in. For example, if you sleep primarily on your side, your will want a bed with more pressure reduction capabilities (i.e. a thicker specialty sleep top). Check out our do-it-yourself mattress line here http://www.rockymountainmattress.com/specials-c-28.html.

You will receive one box for each layer of foam included in your component memory foam mattress.

Each piece of foam has been compressed and vacuum packed into its own plastic covering.

The component memory foam mattress will be housed within a heavy-duty, zippable, terry-cloth/velour cover.

Two separate 3 inch layers of high-density Reflex foam form the mattress base.

On top of the base is a memory foam mattress topper. This particular mattress features a 2 inch layer of 5 lb. Sensus brand memory foam.

Many of our component memory foam mattresses feature two separate 2 inch mattress toppers of different densities. This particular mattress features a 2 inchlayer of 4lb. Aerus brand memory foam.

Once all of the memory foam layers have been assembled to the sleeper’s preference the zippable terry-cloth/velour cover is then zipped shut.

RockyMountain component mattresses are not laminated together like a traditional mattress but held together by friction and the zippered cover. This allows more flexiblity, in changing the feel of the bed by changing the order and densities of foam layers.
