Hey all! I haven't had time to keep this website properly updated lately because I am editing the final draft of my dissertation. I defend my thesis on April 28 and with any luck will be declared "Doctor Cook" that day!

The church associated with Monroe's preschool celebrates the weekend before Mardi Gras by inviting the preschool kids to sing in the church and then treating them to a pancake breakfast. Pancakes are a traditional meal for Mardi Gras in many parts of the country--they were used as a way to consume all the yummy sugar, eggs, butter, milk and other rich foods that would not be served during the season of Lent.

Monroe has been announcing daily that she'd be singing the last Alleluias of the season "On Sunday, March Sixth" (she was always very precise about the date) so I figured we should attend the service she was so excited about!

Here's a photo of the other excited preschool parents taking a photo. :-)

Here's a short clip of the kids singing "Alleluia Gloria." I wonder how many of the children assume this is a song about Teacher Gloria?

After the kids got rid of the Alleluia banner, they went to the preschool auditorium for Mardi Gras crafts and games, all finished with a big pancake breakfast!

Monroe tried on her Mardi Gras mask on the way home.

please can I have them to sleep?

Today we attended our second lesson of a great 3 year-old's ballet class that we found. Monroe is loving it. As I type this, she's in bed sleeping in her new ballet shoes. It feels wonderful to give her something that she loves this much.

This form from Monroe's teacher says, " Monroe was very proud of the work she did on the puzzles in the weekly readers we looked at together today. Great job counting & writing her name!"

Here is a really fun example of Monroe practicing her name at home. Eben told me that he still remembers thinking as a little boy that the number of prongs one put on the letter "E" was a matter of personal style. Monroe has clearly embraced the same line of thinking.

The gem below entertained me to no end. Monroe has revived her habit of announcing a new fake name each day, and she's apparently working this into her doodles--she informed me the day she brought this home that her name was "Alexandra." I am impressed with how many of the letters she was able to pick out. Looking over at her friend (the real) Alexandra's paper must have helped!

Allow me to call your attention to the little dude in the lower left of "Alexandra's" masterpiece. I love this guy. He looks like a cartoon drawn for an anti-depressant commercial on television. (Clearly, he's depicted here before medical attention.)

This last one is just to give you, the friends and family who keep up with Monroe on this site, a little dose of affection. She drew all these hearts by herself, so pick your favorite and consider yourself loved.

Visiting Reese!

Last weekend we visited Reese in her amazing new home. Reese and Olivia actually both moved the same weekend. This coincidence has Monroe expecting that we'll be getting a new house any day now ourselves. :-)

Mount Olive Valentine's Day Dance

Friday night we enjoyed a Valentine's Dance thrown by the church which runs Monroe's preschool, Mount Olive Lutheran. Monroe's Aunt Naomi was in town for a short visit, so the evening was a double treat. We were one of the very first families to arrive so the dance floor was deserted when we got there. Did Monroe let that stop her? Of course not!

Watching Monroe dance her heart out to song after song all by herself was a highlight of my month. WHERE DID THIS CHILD COME FROM? I don't think she's ever even seen any of these moves--there's not really a source for dancing inspiration in her family or everyday life. I think it comes from within! Naomi and I were dying with silent laughter the whole time we watched, but I was also really proud.

Eventually, loads of other families showed up including some of Monroe's school classmates. We all had fun doing dances like the chicken dance, the limbo, and the hokey pokey as a group, but I was pretty glad we happened to arrive early in order to facilitate Monroe's solo show. :-)
