Darren & Cathy are friends of mine. It’s always great when you get to shoot a friend’s wedding. Darren and Cathy got married at Carrubbers Christian Centre on the busy Royal Mile in Edinburgh. There was always a tourist in the background :)

Stevie and Amy got married last Friday. As you can see they were very easy going and up for anything. Thanks for letting me be part of your special day, and I had great fun shooting your wedding.

Wedding | Nick & Deborah

I had so much fun with Nick and Deborah! Deborah was super relaxed and really easy going and was happy to do “whatever”!

This wedding was also the first time I shot in the famous Edinburgh Castle. St Margret's Chapel, were the ceremony took place, is the oldest part of the castle and was built by King David I in the 12th Century.

It was also extra special for me as it was the first time returning to Prestonfield House after my own wedding a year and a half ago.

Website Hosting Change

Some people may have noticed that my website has been up and down the last few days.

My website was originally hosted on a shared hosting server, which means I share a server with X number of other websites. Although this has worked in the past, the reliability has dropped.

Now, I have moved my hosting to a dedicated server instance hosted in the “Cloud” by Amazon EC2.

This should mean that the website uptime is closer to 100%, and if there are any problems it should be easier to fix. Hopefully users will also experience a speed increase while browsing the site.

Wedding | David and Natalie

David and Natalie are a lovely young couple, very much in love. What makes this wedding more special for me is that they are also good friends of mine.

Natalie was so relaxed throughout the whole day which made my job really easy.

They are both outdoor adventure people, so what better place to take some portrait shots than the back of Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh.

It was a bright sunny day in Sidcup, Greater London. It was such a joy to shoot Peter and Sabine’s wedding, they are such a beautiful couple. They where both so relaxed and knew how to have fun!

Apple design through the ages

I take photographs and videos on my iPhone, I process images on my iMac and show clients my work on my iPad…safe to say that I quite like all things apple. However I’m not sure if their translucent plastics phase was a winner!?

Wedding shoot with an iPhone

Last weekend has an amazing weekend. I was privileged to be invited to my friends wedding: Luke & Char. Best of all I was invited as a guest, and not the photographer. Don’t get me wrong I would love to have shot their wedding, but it was so nice to be able to enjoy the day without the pressures of “getting the shot”.

The wedding was on a small island on the Scottish Hebrides called Iona. It took a lot of driving and two ferries to get there. Because the island is so small there is only a few B&B’s, which were all booked up, so we decided to camp. Taking all my camera gear, and then camping would have been a nightmare!

Against all the voices in my head to take my camera, I decided it was best to leave the DSLR at home.

While we where waiting in the church for the Char (the bride) to arrive I remembered Chase Jarvis’s famous quote: “The best camera is the one with you” (actually my wife reminded me, as I was moaning I did not have my camera!). I had recently upgraded my phone to an iPhone 4; this was a great opportunity to test it out in the field.

The photograph above was taken of Luke & Char as they left the church, it was 4:30pm and the sun was bright and harsh. Considering this was taken with a phone I’m quite happy with the result.

Using the iPhone as camera in the real world is quite hard for a wedding photojournalist. First the trigger button is fiddly, however I did learn a neat trick; the “shutter” is triggered when you left up your finger from the button, therefore you can press the button first and then let go when you want the release the shutter. Secondly, with moving subjects (as in the photography above) autofocus is slow and again hard to use while trying to compose your shot. Thirdly, low light situations, in a church for example, produce really grainy images; the look like someone has rubbed sandpaper against your photo!

I also used the iPhone to shoot the first dance. The reception hall was quite dark, so the iPhone again struggled in low light, but I’m hoping that with a bit of editing the video will still come out well.

I had fun “shooting” the wedding on the iPhone, and had even more fun enjoying Luke & Char’s wedding.

I’m now a member of the WPJA

I’m really happy and excited to be accepted as a member of the Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA).

The WPJA is an international, membership-based organization representing professional photographers skilled in the documentation of weddings and events in a candid, unobtrusive style.

According to the WPJA: “The Wedding Photojournalist Association is a highly screened, critical organization. Less than 5% of wedding photographers out there qualify for membership.”

I’ll be now entering some of my photographs into the WPJA competitions, and hopefully win some awards.
