Blog Action Day 2008: Poverty

Today is Blog Action Day 2008, a day in which bloggers throughout the world are blogging about a single issue - poverty. It is the hope of the organizers that this concerted effort will raise awareness about this important issue, lead to increased donations to groups combating poverty, and, ultimately, lead to some real changes. I am happy to be a part of this year’s effort.

While many of us this week are concerned about our shrinking 401(k) accounts, the situation is much more dire for millions of people throughout the world. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 37.3 million Americans were living in poverty in 2007 and over 45 million Americans lacked health insurance. Nearly 1 in 4 African Americans are living in poverty.

According to Global Issues, over 3 billion people worldwide live on less than $2.50 a day. Every day, the deaths of 25,000 to 30,000 children can be attributed to poverty.

Inadequate financial resources also contribute to the spread of HIV/AIDS. In the US, HIV/AIDS increasingly is becoming a disease of lower socio-economic classes. Throughout the world, women who are not economically independent or empowered are more likely to engage in survival sex, or the exchange of sex for food, clothing, or shelter. One study in North Carolina found that roughly 28% of street youths engaged in some form of survival sex. In some parts of the world, children in impoverished families may be forced into a marriage with an older man. In this situation, the girls or young women are not in a position to abstain from sex or practice safer sex. In these situations, the children and young women clearly have an increased risk of becoming infected with HIV.

So what can we do? Each of us can contribute to groups who advocate for the poor. Each of us can contact our elected representatives and urge them to support the Millenium Development Goals, a United Nations program to eliminate poverty by 2015. Each of us can write about this issue and talk about this issue. Each of us can help a neighbor in need.

Many of us have them and many of use them frequently but how do you know which is the right one for you. You have so much to think about, shape, colour, flip, slide, QWERTY and even contracts. Seem like a commitment that I don't want to make but I guess it's the only way if anyone wants to go mobile these days.

Now for me money isn't too much of the issue as far as how much the phone costs but its the plan that worries me. My parents arn't willing to pay for the bill...although I havn't asked but I highly doubt it. Anyways, plans can be from $30+ a month which in the long run isn't bad as long as its between 30 and 40 dollars. After considering many option I have it narrowed down to four phones. The Apple iPhone, The Samsung Instinct, Moterolla RAZR 2, and the Nokia N95. The first two are touch screen, and the Nokia is slide while the RAZR 2 is flip.

Great, time to narrow it down to two; so lets talk about the iPhone. It has become one of the most praised and wanted cell phones in America. It almost has everything you need, it's interface is friendly and hey...its made by Apple. At first glance I knew I wanted one right away but then I looked at the contract that Rogers had stirred up...and boy was it a HUGE TRAP.

So after my calculation were over...it was wayy to much. So out with that idea...maybe couple years down the road. Well then my parents stepped in after that, they suggested I stick with the company that they had which was Rogers. Now I've has major problems with Rogers when it came to internet in the past and quite frankly I hate the company. Now i'm not sure if thier phone service is and better but guess its worth a shot beacuse it'll save me money if I get a "Family Plan".

So then I had no choice but to eliminate the Samsung Instict because the only carrier was Bell.

Sooooo....Now I have no fucking clue as to which phone to get.

Well out with the old iPod Earphones and in with the new Headphones. I asked the opinion of many and they said the "Skullcandy Skull Crushers" would look retarded on me:

So I got thinking and you guys were probably right so I went with the cheaper version of these the low riders seen below. I had to order them since they had none in stores only took a couple days, I got them like a couple hours ago, they're okay but their not noise canceling which I would have liked but meh I guess once I get in shape I can work my way up to the Skull Crushers.
