Tuesday, June 5 will mark the one year anniversary of the tragic car wreck that claimed the lives of three of our friends and critically injured another friend. This has been a difficult year for all of us. We deeply miss Austin Flowers, Lane Meyer, and Matt Speight. Even as we work through the grief process and this journey of healing and moving forward, we give thanks for the remarkable recovery of Brenden Pearce.

We know that God did not cause this accident to occur. We also know that God can use loss, devastation, and tragedy to ultimately bring good to others and glory to God’s name. I continue praying and seeking the ways in which God has and will use this tragedy and our loss for God’s good. During this year, I have seen and experienced some of these “gifts of God” in the many ways in which fellow Christians have reached out to share God’s love and compassion to others. I have also experienced this love and compassion from the immediate families of those who lost their children on June 5. Within the community of faith, I have observed many examples of people “being the presence of Christ” to others.

Between now and June 5, we want to challenge and encourage all RBC youth and youth family members to find ways to do “acts of kindness for others in the name of Jesus Christ and in memory of our friends.” There are numerous ways to complete “acts of kindness for others in the name of Jesus and in memory of Austin, Lane, and Matt.” A few examples include: visit residents in a nursing home, spend time with a person who is lonely, reach out to the person sitting alone in the cafeteria or classroom, offer a ride to a friend in need, offer free baby-sitting/child-care services, mow a lawn, do yard work, clean a house, surprise your mom by washing the dishes, by folding the clothes that are in the dryer, or by making a monetary donation to RBC Youth Missions.

When you do these acts of kindness for others, it’s appropriate to say, “I am doing this _______ (fill in the good deed) in the name of Jesus Christ and in memory of my friends Austin, Lane, and Matt.” “Triple Caring & Sharing Day” provides another opportunity for us to “be the presence of Christ” and bring good from a very bad and tragic situation.

Youth interested in doing so will be given an opportunity to share examples of their “Triple Caring & Sharing Day” on Tuesday evening, June 5. RBC Youth and Youth Parents are invited to join us in the Sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5 for a special time of prayer, reflection, meditation, and remembrance.

Senior High Fall Youth Retreat

The Senior High Youth had a great weekend retreat at Kure Beach on November 4-6! Joye and Jennifer prepared wonderful meals throughout the weekend. Debbie helped lead the Bible study sessions. The conversations during Bible study times were rich, deep, thought-provoking, and meaningful. The retreat provided a wonderful opportunity for some much needed rest and down-time. The students laughed hard and played hard together. This group really enjoys spending time together. Ouch Ball is certainly one crazy game… but the senior high students love to play it! The tradition continues….
