Okay, off to spread the word! I was busy with working on edits for Cougar Magic, adding another 2,000 words to the novella, Night of the Wolf, and working on The Countess and the Wolf (an older story that I’ve been revising periodically about a Highlander, Saxon countess, and her Norman step-family during the period of William the Conqueror after he took over rule.) Pitched 3 New Wolf Tales!

Pictures I took of origami at the Minnesota arboretum and of Axel, emergent Arctic 2-year-old wolf at the International Wolf Center. And then of Holly, 2-year-old black bear at the bear center nearby.

So I pitched three new stories–red wolf Christmas (Leidolf’s pack), Billionaire Wolf (Rafe’s friend), and Wolff (2 brothers and 2 sisters that own the Timberline Ski Lodge in Silver Town) for publication in 2020.

Also, I asked if we could do a 10th year anniversary re-release of Destiny of the Wolf. Yes! This will be for 2019, and I’ll have 3 other new releases that year also: You Had Me at Jaguar, SEAL Wolf Surrender, and the Silver Bells Wolf Christmas, whatever the title will be. And I will be writing a brand new novella to include in the re-release of Destiny of the Wolf also.

Purple Halloween bear I make.

I finished a bear I need to send off to Australia, and was working on another Halloween bear, this one with orange fur (new fur). My Janome of decades conked out on me, so I had to buy a new heavy duty Singer, much lower price, but as much as I use them for as many years as I do, it’s still a cheap investment. My Janome cost me about $13 a year.

We received 2 inches of rain, yay! But it looks like we’re drying out after this. And it’s heating up, then finally starting to cool down a little bit. Yay!

I’m off to write on Cougar Magic, trying to write the final scenes. Only 10,000 words to go, then need to jump on the novella for Destiny of the Wolf. Then I’ll be working on Claiming the White Bear, I have some of them adrift on an ice floe and need to rescue them! What I do to my poor characters!

My son is still serving in the AF. I retired from the Army reserves, my sister did, my brother-in-law retired from the Army, my dad retired from the AF, my mother served in the Army, my dad’s uncle, was a prisoner of the Japanese and died in the Philippines. My dad had been a prisoner of war in Germany for 16 months. and others served in the Canadian Forces–my grandfather, a doctor. My French Great-Grandfather had been a member of Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, and one of my Scottish ancestors had fought so well for the king of England, he was awarded land in Canada, one of the Playfairs. One of my German ancestors was brought over to fight the Patriots during the American Revolution, but believed in George Washington’s cause, fled to NY, and he and one of his sons served in the militia in Canada.

Thanks to everyone’s service but wishing we could all live in peace.

NaNoWriMo--My Highlander

In the spirit of NaNoWriMo, I'm challenging myself to write 50,000 words for the month of November. I'm working on My Highlander, and hope to have it done, early December and then I'll be working on the next white bear book.

Candice had been writing for two days’ straight, working on her publisher’s book deadline, when she wrote the end, smiled, and set the book aside. She would start proofing it tomorrow after she’d given her brain a break. Now she’d do what she always did when she finished a book, or reached a good stopping point in one. Clean house. Check her backlog of emails. Pick up some more groceries. And take a run on the wolf side.

She finished vacuuming and dusting, swearing every window must let all the outdoors in, and then started a batch of gingerbread cookie cutouts to celebrate finishing another book and the Christmas holiday season. While they were baking, she finally settled down to check her emails. Fan mail always came first, and one from her website got her attention right off. She opened it up and read: Hello, I’m Owen Nottingham, private investigator for White River Investigations, White River Falls, Minnesota and my client, Strom Hart, hired me to locate you. Your parents, John and Cynthia Hart, left you an inheritance and you need to see the lawyer about it so that you can claim it. I need to verify that you are the right woman first. Is there any way that we can possibly meet and get this taken care of so you can collect your inheritance? Strom Hart will be the one to receive it by the end of the month otherwise. His assistant, Jim Winchester, said Mr. Hart is your uncle.”

She reread the message again, not believing her eyes, tears filling them. She quickly looked at the date of the message. Two days ago! She knew she shouldn’t have neglected her emails, but when she was into the story, she couldn’t break away.

She ground her teeth, raised her fingers to respond, and heard a knocking at her door. No one came here. Never. Ever. Not even salesmen.

She glanced at her phases-of-the moon calendar. The waxing gibbous was just beginning. She should be fine. Just to be on the safe side, in case the person at the door was trouble, she pulled a can of mace from her desk drawer and headed for the door. She peered through the peephole. A handsome black-haired man waited at the door, with rugged features and intense blue eyes. He was dressed in a black suit, a red shirt, and a dark purple tie covered in red, purple, and gold Christmas balls. She raised her brows.

“I’m Owen Nottingham,” he said to the door, holding up his PI license and driver’s license. He couldn’t know that she was watching him, so he must have hoped she was there, observing him. “I tried getting hold of you on your contact form on your website about your inheritance. Your contact form might not be working, so I had to locate you in person.”

So this was the man who had sent the message. But was he for real? He had to be. He wouldn’t have come all this way to see her if he wasn’t. But how had he found her?

She opened the door, the bells jingling on her Christmas wreath, and he glanced down at the can of mace in her hand. He smiled, his gaze holding hers with such intensity, it was as though he could see clear through to her soul. “Really, just a PI doing my job.”

A chilly breeze carried his scent to her. Wolf scent. She felt so lightheaded all at once, she grabbed the door to keep herself upright, and dropped the can of mace on the tile floor. It clattered, but she couldn’t reach for it if her life depended on it.

Oh. My. God.

This couldn’t be real. He couldn’t be real. No wonder he was talking to the door. He must have heard her footfalls as she’d approached.

He took a deep breath at the same time and his eyes widened in surprise when he smelled her scent. His hand shot out to grab her arm and steady her. For a minute, as she tried to control her breathing, her heart rate, neither of which she could steady. She felt like she was going to pass out.

“Hell, you’re the wolf I saw across the White River, aren’t you?”

Jillian couldn’t believe that a lupus garou could be trying to kill her brother. The wolf chasing Miles had to be a shifter. She knew he wasn’t running with Miles for fun. Not with the way her brother had howled, calling to her for help. If the other wolf had been in trouble too, he would have howled along with her brother No, he’d been hell bent on Miles’s trail. Worse, she worried he could be the wolf who had nearly killed Douglas.
She ran through the woods to track where the wounded wolf had gone once he’d finally veered from her brother’s path. Wild wolves had been sighted in Oregon, so at first she’d thought it might have claimed the territory and was chasing Miles out of the area, or worse, planned to kill him. When she couldn’t scare him off with the first three rounds she’d fired, she was certain he was a shifter. She found drops of blood collected on vegetation, the light rain already diluting it, and followed them to the river where the trail ended.
In the misty rain, she glanced in the direction the river was flowing, and thought she saw a wolf’s head bobbing up and down in the water. She couldn’t be certain, considering the conditions: the water was dark, the object was far away, and the day was overcast.
She continued to watch until whatever it was disappeared beyond a bend in the river. Her heart pounding, she ran in the direction of her cabin, hoping her brother was there and could tell her what was going on. If she didn’t need to hang onto her rifle and cell phone, she would have shifted and run as a wolf. Much faster that way.
She was glad the wolf was no longer chasing her brother, but she did hate that she’d had to shoot him. With their shifter ability to heal faster than humans, he would be fine in no time.
As soon as the cabin came into view, she hurried to the front door, unlocked it, and called out to her brother. He didn’t respond, and she didn’t hear him in the back bedroom. She stalked back to the room, but he wasn’t there. Why wouldn’t he have come here? Unless he was afraid of bringing the big, bad wolf to their doorstep.

For now, she had other business to take care of. She left a message for her brother, telling him to call her at once, that she was working with some jaguar shifters. And that Douglas was in dire straits after someone attacked him. She would be staying at the red wolf pack’s ranch part of the time. She considered trying to track down her brother as a wolf, but with the other wolf wounded and leaving this area, she figured Miles would be okay for now.
Teaming up with jaguars was something totally new for her. Never in a million years would she have believed she’d be working with a combined force of jaguar shifters and a wolf; and with another, if they could solicit his help. On the way over to her cabin, Leidolf had informed her about a hardcore Navy SEAL, also turned PI —and from what she’d read about his profile, a loner in his investigative work—who was in the area and was also investigating the attack on Douglas. From a photo Leidolf had sent to the team, he was one hot looking specimen of a wolf and single, though she just happened to notice that information by chance. And he looked a hell of a lot like the guy she’d seen at the Kitty Cat Club in San Diego. The good Samaritan. That meant he had been a wolf all along. She should have known.
She quickly packed a bag and left to join the shifters at the cabin nearby to meet up with the SEAL wolf, hoping she’d hear from her brother soon. She also put in a call to Leidolf for an update on Douglas’s condition.

Vaughn bobbed up and down in the icy water, thankful his wolf’s double coat protected him from the chilling cold. He had to take care of his wound first, hoping it wasn’t too bad and he would heal quickly enough. He was certain the gray wolf couldn’t have suddenly armed himself with a rifle, so he was still running as a wolf, and that meant Vaughn could try to find his scent again. What if he had an accomplice? Maybe that’s why he howled. To get help from a wolf shifter friend or pack member who would shoot Vaughn instead of coming to his aid as a wolf. The shooter wouldn’t have been some random hunter then. A marksman lying in wait while Vaughn tried to take down the wolf seemed too damned convenient to be mere coincidence.

Okay, so how did I come up with this idea? I wanted to include jaguars and wolves in this venture–and a hot SEAL wolf. That was it. At the end of the previous jaguar book, A Very Jaguar Christmas, I had mentioned trouble in Portland, Oregon, where a red wolf pack lives. I hadn’t mentioned them in a long time, so I wanted to set the story there. And I wanted to have jaguars causing trouble for wolves. I wanted an exciting beginning–but I wanted it to be sexy. But it had to include both jaguars and wolves. But it also had to focus on the romance between one couple. And it had to have shifting. And romance. And conflict.
I’d watched a show about treasure hunters stealing from each other in deep sea dives. The wolf series is so long running, that every one of them has to be different from the rest, and I’d never had a treasure hunting story before. So after much writing and rewriting, I finally decided to make treasure hunting at the root of it.
And that’s how I came up with SEAL Wolf Undercover!

I was working all day on getting the ebook uploaded, and the print format done, still need to review the proof, once I get it, make changes, and send it in for review again and approve.

Hopefully it will be up in about a week. After it's approved, it takes a couple of more days before it is available. I just received the proof as we speak (you didn't know we were speaking, did you? Except I'm doing all the talking.) and that's my next job: re-reading the story today, proofing it.
Then I'm back to Falcon Fae. It just needs an end!

It is soooo hot today, and sticky humid, I feel I'm in the jungle. I know I'm supposed to be writing about Christmas for Billionaire, but I keep wanting to write about jaguars in the jungle. Billionaire has a deadline though. But maybe, I can write jaguar after that. I still want to write another polar bear shifter and my next Highland story.

I wish I could write faster.

Earth Day...so?

I used to plant tons of trees, when I had a lot of acreage–I love forests. But I was so disappointed to learn the people who bought my home in Oklahoma clearcut most of the trees. Beautiful pines, helped to stop erosion on the hillside, and they provided homes for birds, beauty, solitude. There’s no prettier sound than wind blowing through a forest and hearing the rustle of branches or pine needles.
We have old forest in and around our neighborhood. Most new home developments, they just clearcut the trees, leaving barren land. But here, I have several old pines. And behind me, one of my neighbors has beautiful oaks. He wants to cut them down. Why? Because they drop leaves and twigs and he has to pick them up. Really? He has to cut the grass too! Maybe he should dig it up?

In Texas heat, shade trees are at a premium. They’re beautiful. You see them towering a hundred feet above the homes. Why would you want to cut them down??? I had to have one of the pine trees taken down because it had died, but that’s the only reason to do so, or if the roots are getting into the foundation.

But with such a small lot, which I’m thankful for in that it’s much easier to water and maintain, I’m restricted to small shrubs and flowers and such for the most part. Though….I’d like to get some more crepe myrtles, they’re like small trees.

I have planted all of the flowers here, the zinnias from seeds which should turn into flowers soon, the marigolds and daylilies and Mexican heather, the dianthus, and much more. Many will come back next year as they’re perennials. Many will reseed and return even if they’re annuals. I started last year with the daylilies and a few salvia and coneflowers, and the builders had planted coreopsis and snapdragons. So each year, the flowerbeds should be even more beautiful. Oh, and sunflowers.

They’re coming up from the seeds dropped by the birds, but I love seeing them in the garden as they remind me of my father who used to plant them.

What I love about the flowers, besides the color and vibrancy, is that the honeybees, bumblebees, hummingbirds and butterflies love them.

So think about Earth Day, and if you can, plant something to give back to nature.

The Magic of Being a Child

Corey wondered if Santa was an Arctic wolf after all. He’d wondered ever since a fake jaguar Santa had come to visit the kids at the jaguar shifter daycare and asked what they wanted for Christmas. He knew that Santa couldn’t have been real because Santa was from the North Pole and weren’t the Arctic wolves from there too? The jaguars he had met had never been in the snow, so it made sense.
And yet here it was Christmas Eve, snowing in Minnesota, and he was home with his family–his mother and father, his brother and sister, and his uncles. He’d asked Santa for one thing for Christmas–to be home with his family. And now he was.
So maybe the Santa in the sleigh flying across the sky, highlighted by the full moon, was truly the jaguar Santa that had asked him just what he had wanted for Christmas.
Maybe there were two of them. A jaguar shifter and a wolf shifter who brought gifts to all the girls and boys, depending on if they were a wolf or a jaguar. But he’d had the most special gift of all. And this time it was from a jolly old jaguar Santa, who, with a twinkle of merriment in his blue eyes, had said he’d get his wish and more. And he was right.

Demetria is feeling blue, but she and Tammy, Everett’s sister, get together for drinks and movies, but when one of the ladies drops a glass on the floor, Everett comes over to ensure the two of them are okay. So much for the start of his vacation. But he’s fine with it, as long as it affords him the chance to see Demetria again. Little does he know, the next morning when he gets a call from his mother at her jaguar daycare, their whole jaguar shifter world will change forever and he and Demetria will be given the assignment that will challenge them to the end in A Very Jaguar Christmas.

You thought I was going to say Santa and the elves, didn’t you? But the fairies create havoc with everything I do, so I figured I’d hedge my bets and mention them instead. I was at a luncheon in Old Spring and it was a gloomy, rainy day, and when I say rain, I mean, icy cold rain all day. But not to be thwarted as I never get down there and I wanted to see if they had anything unique for Christmas gifts, I trudged through the puddles of water in the rain, and every shop was just as cold as I was.
In Salado, also an old Texas town that reminds me a little of Old Spring, the shops would be filled with the fragrance of wassail, Christmas cinnamon spices, or coffee. Not here. The shops would sport a Christmas tree, each having its own beautiful theme.
But not here. When I reached the German Gift House, they had mulled wine and German cookies, and best of all a genuine, beautiful Old Saint Nick. I was wet, cold and my hair was a mess from wearing the hood up on my raincoat for two hours in the rain, and when they asked if I wanted my picture taken with Santa, I said no. Then they talked me into it, and I was so glad they did. My dad’s paternal grandparents were German, Wilde, which means wild. Here we thought he was a wild Irishman, but he was a wild German instead. The Irish and Scottish and French, and the German Cremers/Cramer were on my mother’s side.
I felt that the rain would turn to snow at any second, I was so cold. It was perfect to get me in the mood for writing more on Loving the White Bear. I’m glad they convinced me to take that shot with the best looking, most realistic Santa I’ve ever met. I’d never had mulled wine before, and it did help to warm me up a bit, and after buying a couple of lovely German ornaments for my daughter and son-in-law’s tree and my son’s, I was off, trudging through the cold rain again.
But I didn’t need to shop any more, looking for that special Christmas gift. I had already found it. A little bit of Christmas, German style, on a cold, rainy day in Texas.

Demetria is feeling blue, but she and Tammy, Everett's sister, get together for drinks and movies, but when one of the ladies drops a glass on the floor, Everett comes over to ensure the two of them are okay. So much for the start of his vacation. But he's fine with it, as long as it affords him the chance to see Demetria again. Little does he know, the next morning when he gets a call from his mother at her jaguar daycare, their whole jaguar shifter world will change forever and he and Demetria will be given the assignment that will challenge them to the end in A Very Jaguar Christmas.

He checked again on Demetria, but she hadn’t moved, so he went into the kitchen to begin Operation: Cleanup.
Even though he would have been at home still playing his game and killing the dragons plaguing their world, he was glad to be here as a brother, a friend, and a Golden Claw agent, whose mission was to take care of jaguars in need. Still, he’d never believed he would be serving as a maid.
He was nearly done mopping the floor when he saw something move out of the corner of his eye and turned to look. Demetria was leaning against the wall next to the china cabinet, looking half asleep, her dark hair in curls about her shoulders.
“Are you okay? Do you need something to help settle a hangover?” he asked, continuing to mop the floor.
She snorted. “What are you doing?” Her words were still fuzzy.
“Cleaning up after the party and ensuring Tammy gets to work tomorrow. You don’t want to see Martin when he gets a call that one of his trainers didn’t show up first thing in the morning. Or hear how upset David would be if he learns he had to be out training all night and his mate doesn’t come into work the next morning to teach. She had just…vanished.”
Demetria sighed. “Got it.”
“Why don’t you get some sleep, if you can? I’ll leave first thing in the morning.”
She nodded and turned, and nearly fell.
He sighed, set the mop against the counter, and stalked toward her. She held up her hand to ward him off. “I can do it.”
“Yeah, and you’ll make it by the time I leave in the morning.” He gently scooped her up in his arms, feeling way too much like he was taking her to his bed, and carried her down the hall to the room she indicated was her bedroom, putting her in her own bed. He covered her up, and, well hell, kissed her cheek. Which is what he had wanted to do before they ended their time together last night. Well, kiss her lips, hug her, more.
Her eyes widened a little, he smiled, and said good night. Then he went back to his maid duties.
When he was done, he removed his clothes except for his boxer briefs and stretched out on the couch, covering himself with the afghan, wrapping himself in Demetria’s scent, and thinking this was as close as he might ever get to heaven.

The sky grew darker as Shannon stared out the entrance of the cave, watching for any sign of danger. She hadn’t seen any hikers or hunters. Yes, she’d noticed the tents at the campsite near the lake. She’d even considered that after the men retired to their tents and their sleeping bags tonight, she could go there and catch a fish in the lake. The campers wouldn’t be able to see her at night. Then she’d have it made. But once she’d rescued the boy, she nixed that idea. If they somehow did catch sight of her, they would know she was a dangerous predator, looking for a new source of meat. Maybe even them.

It didn’t matter. She couldn’t have let the boy drown. Several times she’d woken during the day, thinking she’d heard a child screaming. Forget his having nightmares about last night. She was having them!

The moonlight softly illuminated the golden aspen, the leaves fluttering in the chilly breeze. She closed her eyes briefly.

She had enough nightmares to deal with without piling up any more on top of those. She had intended to stay here in the area because she hadn’t located any sign of wolves or black bears. If she ran into a black bear or wolf pack? Both predators would push a cougar out of their territory or kill him.

She hadn’t smelled either in the vicinity. Only cougars. And a lot of them. Cougars didn’t run in packs. Which was why a cougar would be at risk when encountering a wolf pack. A lone wolf was no match for a cougar’s claws and teeth. But with a lot of cougars congregating together? It had to mean they were shifters. And they kept the other big predators away. So she thought she had half a chance at surviving here. Bears and wolves would find some other place to hunt.

She’d never smelled so many cougars in one area before though and it did worry her that they’d locate her and then what? Interrogate her. Why would a female shifter run in the wilderness by herself with no camping equipment anywhere?

Even if they didn’t learn who she was, she couldn’t go to any of them and ask for help. Not in her cougar form. Without clothes, she couldn’t just walk into town naked, either. Besides, she was a wanted woman, and she was certain no one would believe her word over the rest of her boyfriend’s family. Not when Hennessey Kelly was a cop, which meant she was on her own.

The crimson sky turned to blackness and all that was left was the moon and a sprinkling of stars. Shannon rose, listened, her ears perked, trying to hear anything other than the sound of the breeze rustling the leaves down below. She heard no sign of humans and leapt down to the next ledge. Thankfully, her kind could leap eighteen feet in one bound, up or down. And horizontally? As much as forty to forty-five feet. At a sprint, she could run full out for short distances at forty to fifty miles per hour, which was what she had planned—to race back to the lake, despite discounting the idea earlier, and then take however long it took to catch her meal.

She’d made it to the second rock ledge when she saw something move in her peripheral vision. A man standing on a lower ledge off to her right, his hands reaching for his rifle, slung over his shoulder. How could he see her at dusk?

He moved quickly as if he was a military man and not just a hunter. Before she could leap at him, he fired a shot, the sound ringing in her ears, echoing across the rocks. The last thought she had as she collapsed on the rock ledge above him was that she had lived a month longer than she thought she would have ever managed.

As soon as the she-cat landed on the stone, asleep, hopefully, Chase struggled to reach the ledge she was lying on. If he’d been in his cougar form, no problem. But to reach her as a human, he could have used climbing gear.

He hated having to shoot her as much as it felt as if he were shooting one of his own people. But he wasn’t. He had just knocked out a wild cat protecting herself that might have killed him, based on survival instinct alone.

He grasped the top of the ledge, got a couple of toe holds with his boots, and pulled himself halfway up the rock face when he saw a naked woman lying on the granite, her back to him, and his tranquilizer dart in her shoulder. Shocking him to the core, he gaped at her. Holy shit.

Silky, dark brown, nearly black hair draped around her neck, the rest of her tan skin covered in chill bumps from the cold. Before he could climb on top of the ledge to reach her, and while he was still processing that the cougar was a shifter, and not a full she-cat, his cell phone rang.

His nerves, normally made of steel, shattered into a million fragments. He climbed up onto the ledge and hurried to pull the dart out of the woman’s shoulder, then jerked off his parka. After rushing to lay it on the ledge and then lifting her onto it, he pulled her arms into the sleeves and then buttoned it up to her throat. The parka only came to high thigh, but he couldn’t do anything about that for now. He glanced up at the cave above them, assuming she must have been staying there.

His breath coming out in a misty fog and his heart pounding hard, he made the rest of the arduous climb to reach the cave to grab her clothes and ID. He stalked inside, using his cell phone to provide some extra light as pitch black as it was in there, and found—nothing. Not a backpack, not a stitch of clothes. Certainly no ID. And she wasn’t anyone he remembered ever having seen before.
He hadn’t thought he could be shocked any further.

“God, what a nightmare.” He had to get the nearly naked, sleeping woman down the cliffs somehow. And he had to keep her warm until then.

He called Dan to give him an update. “Dan.”

“Yeah, I tried calling you to let you know the cougar headed in this direction at some point, but I haven’t found any sign of him. Have you discovered anything your way?”

“Yeah. I sure as hell did. I’m in one hell of a mess. I need your help… pronto.”
