As I explained in Monday's post, I'll be sharing page 69 from one of my novels every Wednesday for the next several weeks. Since I have a new Eldritch Legacy title coming out in three weeks, I thought I'd start with book one in that series, captor/prisoner dungeon fantasy Secrets Revealed.

And boy, is page 69 a doozy! It's the opening to an intense D/s scene in which the Dom hero, Lord Eldritch, instructs submissive heroine Inga in dominating another woman. This isn't a "play" session, either -- this scene takes place in an actual medieval dungeon with actual prisoners. (Might I add that Secrets Revealed is probably the darkest book I've written? Inga and Eldritch make Blue Ruin read like a trip to Disneyland.)

So let's kick off my first page 69 excerpt with some M/F/F BDSM, shall we? I'll include the blurb to put things into perspective. Enjoy, and if this one doesn't scare you off, check back next week for an excerpt from the slightly tamer Regency installment Eldritch Legacy 2: Lessons Learned.

Blurb:

PAGE 69 EXCERPT:

Inga decided to humor her. Guided by instinct, she brushed her lips lightly across Thelise's and teased the girl with her breath. She darted her tongue and tasted the other girl's mouth. Thelise responded in kind.

Thrilling in the warm, wet glide of their tongues snaking together, Inga fought her growing lust and instead focused on Thelise's innermost thoughts. The other girl succumbed fully to Inga's kiss, letting her guard down. In that moment, she offered the briefest glimpse behind the veil, enough for Inga to find what she sought — the key to breaking Thelise.

Inga pulled a hairbreadth away, ending the kiss. The other girl sighed in what Inga sensed to be genuine disappointment.

Inga addressed Eldritch but maintained eye contact with Thelise. "Milord," she asked, "when the guards searched her, did they find poison?"

"No," he replied.

"And what will happen if I cannot make her answer you?"

"Her head will roll on the chopping block at the break of dawn."

"Neither of you frighten me," Thelise declared all too quickly. Again the girl's confidence faltered, and in her eyes, Inga saw what she had already detected during their kiss.

"You fear death," Inga said.

Tears welled in the corner of Thelise's eyes, but she blinked them away.

Her guess confirmed, Inga stood and gloated down at the girl. "I was prepared to die the day Lord Eldritch sent me here. I only live by his mercy and grace. Yet you would dare judge me for—" Inga stopped herself short. She had nearly said for loving him. Unnerved, she took a breath and continued. "You would condemn me for filling the role of mistress, when you, yourself, have offered your body to him?"

Inga avoided looking at Eldritch. Her gaze strayed across the floor and landed upon the whip where she had dropped it. She opened her hand and felt a strange current coursing through her, similar to the one experienced when she performed healing. The whip lifted from the floor and flew into her waiting palm.

Had Eldritch done that, Inga wondered, or had she called upon the power herself?

Eldritch strode past Inga, brushing her shoulder. He walked around the stocks and leaned against the wall. Arms folded across his chest, he nodded at Inga and gestured toward Thelise's backside.

"Well?" he asked. The single-worded question hung heavy in the air. "Begin."

Page 69, that is. I've been wanting to do something cool and creative like Rick R. Reed's Sample 60 Saturday, Jessica Freely's Word Candy Wednesday, or multi-author Six Sentence Sunday. In devising my own fun, random way to share book excerpts, I recalled my favorite line from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure:

And to think, Keanu Reeves went on to be a Hollywood heavy-hitter. Or that I'm aiming to be taken more seriously as an author. Anyway, starting this Wednesday (because Hump Day is mature of me, too) I'll be posting page 69 from a different novel every week. The next Eldritch Legacy book A Forfeit Owed comes out 3 weeks from tomorrow, so I thought I'd start with the first Eldritch title, Secrets Revealed, and work my way up to the new book the same week it's released. Once I'm through the Eldritch titles, I'll continue with the Blue Ruin series and so on.

Sooo, check back in two days for the first of several posts that will be tagged "69 Dudes". (I'd include the comma to ensure folks don't think I'm posting about a small army or stripper lineup of sixty-nine dudes, but it messes up the tag code.) As for my short stories and novellas, they aren't long enough to post a page 69, so watch for me to do something special for those with my other favorite number, lucky 13!

Anne Cain does it again! I asked for an accurately curvy portrayal of Korinne, my BBW heroine from my upcoming release Eldritch Legacy: A Forfeit Owed, and Anne delivered beautifully!

For Eldritch Legacy readers who've wondered what this installment is about -- or where it falls in the chronological order of things -- it takes place 25 years after the events of book one, Secrets Revealed. So there you have it. I must say, it was fun to play with not one but two of Inga's hot sons. I hope readers will enjoy revisiting the Eldritch family as much as I have. A Forfeit Owed comes out February 21st from Loose Id, so stay tuned!

I've just learned from my editor at Loose Id that the next Eldritch Legacy book, A Forfeit Owed, will be released February 21st. Hopefully that will make a nice post-Valentine treat for my Eldritch readers! A Forfeit Owed will be the fourth Eldritch release, but falls chronologically between books 1 and 2. It takes place 25 years after Secrets Revealed and features a BBW heroine paired with not one but two of Inga's hot princely sons. Hot M/F/M loving aside, it should also fill in a few blanks regarding Inga's youngest son, Trystan, mentioned but unnamed in book 3, Fates Fulfilled. Stay tuned for more details!

My 2011 Year in Review

My annual review will be shorter than usual, because 2011 was a slow year. I saw no new releases. No reprints, either. My last release was a December 2010 holiday story that didn't really carry over into 2011. In ye olde days, authors were expected to wait a year or two between releases, but in E-book Land we risk obscurity if we aren't putting something out every few months. Ah well, if I learned anything this year, it's to view my writing career as I've come to view every other aspect of my life -- there are good years, and there are lean years, and that's the cycle of things.

So what did I accomplish? I finally completed A Forfeit Owed, which was contracted a few years ago, and sent it to my very patient editor. (That one's still in edits and will be out sometime next year.) The only other thing I've written is a first draft of a new M/M short that I knocked out last month. I'm running it through two more drafts before submitting it to the publisher I have in mind.

2011 wasn't a total write-off. Sleight of Hand leapt from languishing mid-ranger to my #2 bestseller. Random sales spikes are normal with e-books, particularly when they're first released at secondary distributor sites, but after about two years things level off. At least that's been my experience, with peers reporting similar patterns. I saw that trend change with Sleight of Hand thanks to Kindle's growing popularity coupled with Samhain Publishing's rise to mainstream success. It's the first time I've had an earlier title bounce back from the dead like that, not to mention watched it outdo first month sales. It was definitely an encouraging highlight of my year.

To round things out, Sonoran Heat earned honorable mention in the Rainbow Awards. And well, that's about the extent of my year in review. I had announced previously that I would be taking a more careful, less rushed approach to writing, so I guess on that promise I delivered.

Dire apocalyptic warnings aside, here's hoping 2012 is a good one. Personally, I think the Mayans were just trolling us.

My Kindle Fire arrived in the mail this past weekend as a gift from my spouse. (Thanks, Spouse!) It's very sleek and shiny, as you can see. Don't my book covers look nice on it? I still haven't figured out how to list them under Books instead of Docs, but as long as I can find them, it's okay.

Honestly, I haven't had time to read an actual book on the Fire yet, but I took a peek and like how you can turn the page by swiping your finger rather than pushing a button. I have enjoyed playing around with the apps, many of which I already had access to via my Amazon Cloud. I like that I can not only read a book on this thing, but e-mail, Tweet, and even watch Netflix. If you're already acquainted with Android (my preferred OS on any mobile device), you should find the Fire particularly comfortable, familiar, and easy to use.

The Fire is a bit smaller than the Kindle 2 as far as the housing, but as you can see, it's all screen. (And full-color backlit touch screen at that -- yay!) Yet it's slightly heavier than the Kindle 2, but my cover should arrive today (thanks again, Spouse!) which should make the Fire easier to hold.

All in all, I'm very pleased with my new toy and have enjoyed playing with it so far. Maybe this holiday weekend, I will even sit down and, you know, read a book on it! I know from Twitter and Facebook that several of you also got Fires this past weekend, so feel free to compare notes in comments!

If you follow my Twitter account @katrinastrauss you'll know I'm off my reading break and back to writing. I'm not officially participating in NaNo, but I've issued myself my own personal mini-NaNo challenge to get back into the swing of things.

So, what am I working on? I've pulled out and dusted off a half-written M/M voyeur/exhibitionist short I started two years ago. As is sometimes the case, the Muse morphed and mutated, landing certain characters and elements in two wholly unrelated stories that have since been published. The original genesis has stayed in the back of my mind, however, and I'm ready to make something of it.

I'm aiming to place it with a certain publisher and will hopefully announce a contract in a few months. In the meantime, progress is coming along nicely. So nicely, I thought I'd share a teaser. Here you go, a little NC-17 snippet of my mini-NaNo:

Logan clicked the bookmarked web link and logged in to his free account. The browser immediately filled with thumbnail images of men, their body types ranging from slender to hard-bodied to soft. Some showed off their chests, others teased with hip-slung pants to reveal V-lines with a hint of pubes. A few boasted the full monty, leaving absolutely nothing to the imagination.

Ignoring the flashing ads in the sidebar, Logan filtered his search to profiles listing their age as late twenties like him or older. From there, he narrowed down to those with the face or body to match their birth year. The twenty and early thirty-somethings tended to be skinnier, but several of the middle-aged guys could give their younger counterparts a run for their money at the gym. Whatever their body type, Logan liked men, not boys, and the guys who fell into limbo between barely legal to his age could be hard to gauge. A good example would be Seth, the cute black-haired counter boy who’d waited on him at the cafe that morning. Seth appeared to be in his early twenties, and had to be out of high school to work on a Monday morning, but he could easily be a mature looking seventeen-year-old dropout.

Better safe than sorry, Logan thought. Thankfully, it wasn’t too difficult weeding out jailbait at his favorite website. Most of the regulars were in their thirties or forties, Logan suspected due to a combination of confidence, experience, boredom, and/or midlife crisis. Whatever their reasons, it provided him a nice selection of gorgeous, uninhibited men willing to perform on cam.

He studied tonight’s assortment, split almost evenly between mirror shots from smart phones to freeze-framed webcam stills. Some subjects showed their faces, others reveled in anonymity by aiming the cam directly at their dicks. In the brief chats he’d enjoyed, Logan had learned some of them were out and proud gay men, while others confessed they were married with wives and children. A few insisted they were truly straight but just liked being watched, period. Whatever their story -- gay, straight, bi, out, or closeted -- they all shared one secret in common. They were exhibitionists who liked to play on cam, for voyeurs like Logan who couldn’t get enough.

A few scammers had tried to lure him to pay-per-sites with a promise of more, but why bother paying when so many men on this site simply did it for free? To the true exhibitionists, sexual release paired with fulfillment of their taboo pastime was reward enough, and Logan was more than happy to oblige them.

Eldritch Legacy series on Nook

Eldritch Legacy 1 and 3 have been on the Nook site for a while, but for some reason book 2 -- absinthe-fueled, opium-laced Regency Lessons Learned -- was missing. Byronic poet Stefan Eldritch is a cornerstone character for the entire series, so this simply wouldn't do! After bringing it to the publisher's attention, who in turn brought it to B&N's attention, I'm happy to report all three Eldritch Legacy titles are now available on Nook.
