Nick and Rooster’s conversation lagged as they both paused to watch Andy and Buck approach. The afternoon had grown warm, the hottest so far, and the men waved at dust and bugs that crawled and bit, making them miserable.

Buck stopped and bobbed a nod at the two foremen. “Men.”

“Sir,” both mumbled in reply.

Buck grunted, then headed on past the men with Andy at his heels. As she hustled pass Rooster, her eyes met his and she couldn’t help but notice the intensity there.

She tripped over a rut and ran several steps ahead to regain her balance. Stopping to readjust the stake bag on her shoulder, she waved away a sweat bee. “Go ahead, Andy, trip and fall at his feet,” she muttered under her breath.

Two steps later she lurched to a halt and dropped the bag to clutch at her underarm where something, more than likely the sweat bee, stung her with a vengeance.

Shouting curses, she danced and twisted in a circle, yanking at her safety vest and shirt and grabbing at her sports bra in an attempt the stop the burning sting. Finally, she ripped one arm out of her shirt and vest. Shoving her fingers up under the tight sweaty bra, she scooped out the bee and jumped back as its body fell to the dirt.

She stomped on the bee and kinked her neck, trying to examine her armpit area, but then she remembered where she was. She froze with one hand still up the side of her bra. Her head came up, only to find every man on the right-of-way, numbering well over thirty, staring at her in amazement.

“Need a hand?” Nick called out with a grin.

“It was a bee—” she started, then with a snort of disgust, she yanked her hand from her bra. Hefting the heavy bag, she realized her shirt and safety vest were still bunched up around one side of her neck, leaving her arm and her stomach half exposed. Three more cuss words escaped as she dropped the bag and fumbled back into her clothing, with all eyes watching her every move.

The sting continued to burn as she grabbed the stake bag and stomped past Buck, with her cheeks red and hot.

“What was that all about?” the old man asked as she passed.

Ignoring him, Andy continued up the right-of-way.

Rooster smoothed his fingers down his beard trying to hide a laugh as he watched Andy and Buck retreat. Nick hooted by his side, cackling with the other hands as they regaled Andy tearing off her shirt. Rooster’s hand dropped and he frowned, wondering how bad the sting was. He’d had a sweat bee trapped in his pants once, and it was a pain he still remembered.

Andy could only stare, wide-eyed, at the keys in her hand. She couldn’t move, couldn’t think. Only foremen got a company truck.

Andy is pleased to work with Grandpa Buck again, even though the long hours limit her time with Rooster. But her contentment is cut short when a serious on-the-job accident tips the scale of leadership, throwing Rooster and Andy into conflict.

Rooster must prove he is unbiased toward Andy and her work, or lose his promotion. When her parents show up, Andy has to deal with Rooster, her mother’s interference, and her own insecurities to keep the job going. If she can’t cope she’ll lose her job, and worse yet, she’ll let down Buck.

If Andy and Rooster can’t find a way to work together and complete the pipeline, their relationship is over.

My latest book, Love on the Line, is the story of Andy, a woman who chooses to work building a pipeline in the rugged mountains of West Virginia. Why did I write about this? I wrote it partly because I was inspired by the experiences of my own daughter who entertained me with many of her personal experiences as a pipeliner. But I also wrote it because I too chose to work in a male dominated field back in the day. Some of the struggles of women in these fields are upsetting, but many are inspiring and funny, thus perfect material for the kind of books I love to write. Just because not many women choose to do it, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be done, right?

More than any time in recorded history, women are choosing to work in male dominated fields. Every day you come across a woman truck driver, firefighter, or pharmacist. And even though it’s become commonplace, many fields stick with their traditional titles such as policeman, draftsman, and even garbage man. Given this plus the infamous glass ceiling, why would a woman choose to spend their entire career fighting an uphill battle? There are a million reasons, but overwhelmingly, the answer I find is “because I want to” or “because the job appealed to me,” or “My dad and grandpa did it, why shouldn’t I?”

When was the idea planted for women to take the jobs they wanted, even if they were traditionally considered only suitable for men? Some would say with Eve, but both folklore and history are filled with women who not only worked at the jobs they pleased, they ruled societies: Joan of Ark and Cleopatra, to name a few. In Victorian times, women who wrote were forced to use a male pen name or work without recognition. But the women of my grandmother’s generation were forced to work at jobs considered appropriate only for men during world war II. They worked everywhere from factories to the fields. Sadly, after a taste of the liberation a paycheck affords a person, these women were expected to quietly step back into the kitchen once the men came home.

My mother’s generation, were blessed with not only their mother’s experiences, but all manner of modern conveniences which allowed them to clean and cook and generally care for their families in a fraction of the time it took their mothers. Many of these women took it upon themselves to “have it all” and step out into the working world, and not just as nurses and schoolteachers. Their bravery gave the women of my generation the encouragement and conviction that we too could plan a career. However, we quickly learned that we couldn’t be super mom and have a demanding and time consuming career without a shift in attitude, and this shift had to come from the men. The change had to happen not just because of the aforesaid glass ceiling on the job, but because we needed help at home.

Do I think only women who work have value, and somehow women who don’t work away from home are lesser somehow? Of course not! In my lifetime I have been a stay at home mom, a sick in bed mom, a full time student mom, an employed full time mom, and a retired mom. All of those words we put on women are pointless when you realize that we are in this together, and we should be supportive and understanding, no matter what roll you chose.

Although I’ve been writing fiction since I was a teenager, I fell into writing erotica because, like many people in this space, I saw the surge of indie erotica after Fifty Shades of Grey was published. I thought I would give it a shot and the result was my first story, Supernatural Seductions.

The fact that my first toe dip into the erotica pool was a paranormal story is no coincidence: I have been both fascinated wholly and frightened witless by the otherworldly since I was dragged to see the original Amityville Horror in the movie theater as a child. Horror movies and novels became my primary go-to entertainment source for many years, and although they made for many sleepless nights, I couldn’t stay away from them.

I also can’t resist a strange story. Or a story with a twist. (I have The Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents to thank for that.) I know that some of my stories can be downright weird…and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Much like life, the path I take from Point A to Point B is not always a straight line and orgasms are often part of the journey my characters take, not always merely the destination.

I see myself as a literary flesh peddler—that is, like a talent scout, I get the characters together and let them perform. They present themselves to me, tell me who they are and what they want to do, and I give them the stage to do it on. Naked, of course. Some characters are bold and brazen and tell me exactly how they want to navigate the story, while others are more quiet and reserved, causing me to give them stricter direction in their scenes. In the end, I hope this all results in a fun and sexy story that turns you on as it takes turns you may not have expected—but leaves you satisfied on multiple levels nonetheless.

When I’m not writing my quirky erotica, I’m being quirky over on Medium, where I write erotic poetry, sex and relationship tips, flash fiction, and summaries of sex research. This is a great complement to my erotic stories because it allows me to explore sex and relationships in a different way—and hopefully help readers laugh, learn, think, get horny, and find information they can use in their own relationships and sex lives.

Retracing her steps, she realized she’d missed a turnoff from the kitchen. It led to a storage area for fine bone china and glassware, a dumbwaiter for delivering food to the second floor, and a wine cellar down a short flight of steps. She could smell the barrel-aged wine even from here.

Wait, what? Florida homes didn’t have basements. In her mind’s eye, she regarded the house from the outside. It had been built on a slope, presumably allowing for a lower level.

The owner must have stashed his bootlegger liquor there. In that case, the cellar might have a tunnel leading away from the house. And this inner door would have been disguised to hide its true purpose during a raid.

For that matter, where was the vault hidden? Upstairs in the master suite?

A brilliant thought hit, and she smacked her head. If she or Dalton had thought of it earlier, they could have obtained a blueprint of the place. Too late now, but that would have made things a lot easier. Now she just had her own intuition to guide her.

She peered down the stairs to the dark cellar but didn’t hear any voices coming from that direction. Quietly, she shut the door. Dread pressed upon her shoulders as she realized she’d have to go upstairs. This hadn’t been in her game plan. If she were wise, she’d wait outside until Dalton could get there. Or she could grab a defensive weapon just in case Sierra was in trouble and continue to search for her.

Dalton had once given her pepper spray for her purse, but she was afraid she’d end up breathing in the fumes herself if she used it. Nor had she wanted to learn how to use a knife or a gun like he’d suggested. Her wits would have to suffice, and so far, they’d served her well.

A solid bookend from the library might serve her purpose. She reentered that room and scanned the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves that lined the walls. As she listened to a clock ticking in the background, she heard those faint voices again.

She glanced around for a bookend and spotted a heavy flashlight on one shelf. She lifted the bulky tool and turned on the beam, scouring the shelves. If the house did have hidden passages, this would be a good location for one.

She hesitated when something struck her as peculiar about that panel in the middle. As she splayed her beam back and forth, she noticed it seemed wider than the other sections. Moving closer, she pressed her fingers around the edges, but nothing happened. Then she tilted each book on the shelves one by one.

Would the titles make a difference? She squinted at them, trying to read the faded print. They looked like stories from classic literature.

She’d read some of these titles in school, but none of them struck her as fitting the action-adventure genre. Instinct told her she was onto something, especially when she heard voices murmuring again.

Wait a minute. You have a literature professor in the family. Text Reed for a clue.

She hastily composed her query and sent it off, hoping he was near his phone. Remembering to put hers on silent mode, she paced back and forth while waiting for a response.

A few moments later, she suppressed a whoop of triumph. Reed had responded with just the info she needed.

Oh, man. She could really use a directory to the library. Shivering in the air-conditioning, she went back to studying the book titles and examined the ones nearest the panel that appeared a tad too wide. There! King Solomon’s Mines.

“Reed, you’re a genius.” She tilted the book outward. Immediately, a click sounded, followed by a rumbling noise.

The Unexpected Birth of the Venus Bixby Mysteries

Venus Bixby wasn’t supposed to be the star of anything. She was meant to walk into a scene, deliver a few helpful observations, and walk out again. Instead, she refused to leave.

Here’s what I mean.

Venus first appeared as a secondary character in my romantic comedy What's Not Lost. When I initially cast her in that story, she was an aunt to the antagonist and was already ten years older than the amateur sleuth readers eventually meet in the Venus Bixby Mysteries. Even then, she was witty, observant, and impossible to ignore. While these qualities, along with her name, made Venus memorable, she wasn't the person driving that romcom.

As is often the case in novels, some characters emerge with fully formed backstories. Others quietly dominate scenes until one day you realize they're carrying a story of their own beneath the surface. Venus Bixby was one such character in What’s Not Lost. But once I began thinking about writing a cozy mystery series, I realized I wanted to spin her off, make her my sleuth, thereby giving Venus her proper day in the sun.

The Venus Bixby, who appeared in the romcom, would’ve already lived through experiences that would be fodder for the mysteries I wanted to write. My romcom readers knew Venus lived south of Boston, raised two cats, and embraced an interest in art history. Therefore, to craft something in a different genre meant I had to create Venus’s origin story. I had to give her free rein to blaze her own uniqueness, to acknowledge her strengths and laws, and to bring her energy and voice to life.

Over the course of the cozy series, Venus repeatedly reinvents herself, turning one small business after another into the next chapter of her life. From owning an oldies music store and cookie bakery to opening a kitty day care center to becoming a bookseller, Venus is one busy lady.

Even though Venus’s personal ambition is on full display, she’s described by one reader as “sharp and loyal to those around her… her empathy and compassion are beautiful, matched only by her strength and tenacity.”

Never mind that she frequently stumbles over dead bodies. Her fear of sneezing at the most inopportune times makes her a mature sleuth readers relate to. Her habit of asking people “What’s your favorite song today?” validates her interest in others and perhaps triggers readers to ask themselves that same question.

Another reviewer portrayed Venus as “funny without being lacquered in quips, sentimental without turning syrupy, and nosy in a way that feels earned rather than performative”—all traits often more important than formal investigative skills.

In the end, Venus solves mysteries the same way she values family and relationships: by showing up when she’s needed. And just as she discovers the clue everyone else missed, she unmasks the person everyone else overlooked.

One of the joys of writing the Venus Bixby Mysteries has been spending time with a younger Venus. Readers of the romcom met a woman who already accumulated years of experiences, successes, mistakes, and hard-won wisdom. The cozy mysteries allowed me to explore the version of her who was still figuring things out.

Rather than barge uninvited into the classroom looking for her, Gabby and I bided our time and hung out in the lobby. I shifted from one foot to the other while Gabby perused the business cards pinned to a brand-new combination whiteboard and corkboard.

“When I come back with that vase, I’ll bring a few business cards to tack up here.”

“Great idea!” I rifled through my purse until I found a couple of cards promoting Oldies & Goodies and Cats & Their Cradle. I affixed them to the cork and smiled. Part of me wondered whether Sam would take them down before anyone ever saw them.

Still no Margo. Did she not hear the bell when we entered a few minutes ago? Maybe not over Ol’ Blue Eyes. I considered writing a message on the whiteboard. I picked through the pens in the Tremont Regency Hotel mug on the desk, but there didn’t appear to be any of those dry-erase markers.

“Where could she be?” Gabby asked.

“Probably in the back. Should we check?”

I gently opened the glass door to the main classroom. A rush of crisp air reminded me how we’d kept the temperature in the low sixties so the students wouldn’t get overheated. The smell of fresh-cut grass suddenly wafted over me. My nose recognized dance floor wax, forcing me to stifle a sneeze.

The same song we heard when we walked into the lobby still played. Must be on a continuous loop. I listened closely. Ah, Frank was singing “Witchcraft.” An appropriate theme for the day.

The walls were painted a creamy shade of white. Floor-to-ceiling mirrors lined one wall and a row of barres ran parallel to the floor. The mirrors reflected framed images on the opposite wall. I turned to examine them up close. I walked along the wall, studying and touching each gently. Definitely Sam and Margo in their younger years.

This egotistical display was so unlike the studio Paul, and then I, owned. Our walls were proudly adorned with photographs of the young dancers who graced our ballroom.

Where are those pictures? Why didn’t they ask if I wanted them? What else did they keep from me?

“Margo?” I called.

Silence.

At the far end of the room, there was a royal purple floor-to-ceiling drape pulled closed across the width of the ballroom. As I walked toward it, I waved toward Gabby. “I’m gonna check back here.”

I noticed a universal restroom to my right. I motioned to Gabby. “You check in there.”

Then I drew back the curtain. “Never mind. Found her!” I cried out.

The "Quick as You Can" Story Behind My Books

My fascination for myths, history, and how they interweave inspired my two historical fantasy series, The Osteria Chronicles and my second series, Domna (you can grab your free series starters for those HERE and HERE).

But all those ancient myths and angst-ridden heroes got a bit too serious for someone with a strange sense of humor and odd way of looking at the world.

So, while sitting at my grandmother’s funeral, my brain came up with an idea for a contemporary fantasy trilogy that’s filled with magic, mystery, snarky humor, and the dead who just won’t stay dead. That idea turned into The Cassie Black Trilogy, which has turned into a fan favorite.

Then, because writer brains are weird, a simple elephant story I had in mind somehow morphed into a "hilarious" cozy fantasy series featuring a detecting dragon. Many moons ago I was a scientist in a neuroscience lab where I got to play with brains and illegal drugs. Now, I take wickedly strong tea and turn it into comic fantasy whodunits full of mythical misfits and magical mishaps that I hope give you a giggle.

My tales run the gamut from the ever-expanding Cassie Black Trilogy with its wryly humorous paranormal mysteries to the comical fantasy whodunits in The Circus of Unusual Creatures, and from light-hearted novellas celebrating my love of books to short fiction in which I really flex my myth-loving and humor-craving muscles!

When I’m not creating worlds or killing off characters, I can be found gardening, planning my next travel adventure, concocting some sort of mess in the kitchen, or working as an unpaid servant to one very spoiled cat and some very demanding squirrels.

Most sleuths don’t have the advantage of talking to the murder victim for clues, but Saffron has a window into the afterlife. The problem is, she's not a detective and has no wish to be.

In the charming heart of London’s Notting Hill, Saffron juggles motherhood, running an animal welfare foundation, and counseling recently deceased spirits—the invisibles. But her peaceful routine is upended when a spirit insists she solve the mystery of his untimely death. Lucas Troy pops into her awareness claiming he was killed and demanding she figure out who did it. He wants justice before he'll agree to move on. ButSaffron's role isn't to play detective, but to help each invisible plan for the next adventure in living. She asks Lucas if he suspects anyone in the circle at his aunt’s tea party where he died. He can’t imagine anyone wanting to kill him, but he persuades Saffron to interview them all.

She feels for Lucas, who had hardly begun his life, and she tries to persuade him that he can have a great future next lifetime, but finally she gives in and agrees to a little investigating. If she finds out something, perhaps he’ll agree to move forward. But the closer she gets to the possible killer, the more she’s in danger. Saffron has no wish to join Lucas in The Room Over There.

The call looked like spam, and Saffron was about to block the number, but she had a sense that she should pick up.

The caller said, “Is this Saffron Shelley?”

“Yes. Who is this?”

“It doesn’t matter who I am. I have a message for you. About your children.”

The chill that swarmed up Saffron’s back didn’t stop as the woman on the line continued. “I can harm your children if you don’t stop looking into Lucas Troy’s death.”

The voice was monotone, like someone reading a grocery list rather than making a death threat. “You stop or we will hurt your little ones.”

She listened, with more chills and full-body goosebumps.

“Where are my children?”

“We have them. I need you to promise you will stop if you want to see them again.”

The grim threat again made Saffron shiver. She should call the police right now—but no. She shouldn’t. The voice said the children could be hurt if she did.

Trying and failing to keep the scream our of her voice, she replied, “Bring back my children! I promise I’ll stop. Just tell me where they are.”

The voice was familiar, but she was too rattled to connect it to anyone.

“If you contact the police, your children will be harmed.”

The caller hung up.

That’s what kidnappers always said in these dramas. “Don’t contact the police.”

Screw that. She dialed the number for emergency and was connected to the police. She gave her report breathlessly. Then she called the school and asked about the children. The school’s administrative assistant answered with a cheery tone that grated.

What is a Cozy Mystery?

With a new book coming out soon, I’ve been contemplating the fiction category called “cozy mystery” and wanting a definition. How do you define a cozy mystery from all the other kinds? Here’s what I’ve found in my reading and research.

What’s a Cozy Mystery?

At first glance, the two words sound like a contradiction. What can be cozy about a mysterious event? Spooky, chill-inducing, scary—those are words I would associate with murder mysteries, until I began reading the kind that often featured women sleuths and cats, dogs, and knitting. Stories that put the cozy in the chilling.

When is a mysterious murder ever easy to read about? Authors inspired by the likes of Agatha Christie have evolved a new art of mystery storytelling, a way of setting the deadly deeds in gentle circumstances, suburbs, bookstores, seashores, pleasant inns, so that you can read the book and still sleep well.

Authors like Ellery Adams and Richard Osman have made main characters compelling, quirky, and relatable. No more Hercule Poirot exoticism, no more genius-level sleuthing via “the little gray cells.” Now we have solving murders and women who knit chasing serial killers. In cozies, something sinister does lurk beneath the quotidian, but great emphasis is on the ordinary surface of life, and the daily comforts that get us through the day. The main character may pursue other interesting activities besides solving murders, such as costuming amateur theatricals or running a bakery.

The Amateur Sleuth

Christie was the master of hiding evil beneath a genteel surface, and of course her Miss Marple series invented the amateur sleuth. But these days, cozy mysteries take a much more benign approach, less sinister in their view of human nature. The murderer is an anomaly. Settings like a florist shop or a café are the perfect places for the amateur sleuths to figure out murders as a sideline to their real lives. Whether it’s dog walking or gardening, these self-made detectives are fully fleshed-out people because we see more sides of their lives than just the detecting.

In The Deadly Tea, my main character has a psychic calling to comfort and counsel newly deceased souls gives a twist to the investigations. In her case, she looks into the mystery on the victim’s behalf, and often gets the most clues from the person who was killed. She’s sidelining in that gig, though, because her main job in life is mother to two small children. Plus, she bakes a lot of sourdough bread, mostly for calming her nerves and feeding a hungry family, which includes her live-in in-laws.

Whatever the recipe for a cozy mystery, it’s now a booming business in fiction, and as a reader, I’m delighted to explore all the coziness in the genre as well as the puzzles.
