Near eleven, Jacques’s truck approached the barn. There, he and Claire saw two men in black coats putting a third into their vehicle. The barn behind them roiled in flame. From the look of it, the generator had exploded, or maybe they had simply set off some explosives. Jacques and Claire sat far enough back to observe what had happened but not close enough to be spotted.

“Goddamn it.”

“My God, Jacques,” she said. “They are taking him.” Their own luck had held. Thomas’s had not. “And he had been so clever. The boot heel. The shaving cream.”

“We have to go. Immediately!” Both watched, though only seconds more, until the Germans drove off with their prize, the barn behind them collapsing in flame. “Did you think he knew about Combourg?” Jacques asked her.

She had never mentioned it. They’d only met Thomas at the Laurent farm, in Épiniac. “As I recall, nothing was ever said to him about Combourg.”

“He would not know of the monsignor, Roger’s uncle,” she added. They had kept that secret. Claire rubbed at the palm of one hand, kneading it with the knuckle of the other.

“No. And he does not know our real names,” Jacques said. “But Roger Laurent could know.”

Jacques took her hand. “Thomas is lost, but what harm Roger could do yet is considerable. If he gives up Roger.”

“Will he? Where will they take him?” she asked as Jacques worked the truck around, knowing he was leaving behind his apples and, more importantly, his cover for travel.

“Saint-Lô, I would think. Some Nazi headquarters.”

As Jacques wrenched the truck sharply onto the road toward home, where the deeply distressed Claire would be able to arrange for her return to Bodney, a bottle scooted out from under her seat.

“Look at this,” she said, pulling it up from the floor. “It’s his Calvados.” Attempting to hold back tears.

“Keep it. We will finish it tonight in his honor with a tip of the hat to our friend.”

Passing near enough to the Laurent farm en route to Combourg, with relative safety still several kilometers away, Jacques pointed to the farmhouse. It was risky, but he had to take a look, remaining well back from potential observation. There, they were able to make out, standing near the entry door, the one thing they had hardly dared hope to see—a dark green motorcycle.

What Roger’s return portended was unclear, but given what had happened to Thomas, that outcome was surely the best they could have hoped for. Jacques slowed the truck and looked to the darkened house, their hearts racing.

“Oh my God. He’s come back.”

Jacques touched her hand.

She thought to say something, leaning into him. “Let’s go home, Jacques. Please!” Then added, “You did well, getting us through it all. So brave.”

“You and me,” he said. “We did. Together.” He touched her face tenderly.

In that moment, Jacques and Claire leaned toward each other for a necessary hug, and then a kiss. A kiss of relief. A kiss of what might yet be.

Then he stopped. He was going to ask why she would believe something so heinous, so stereotypical and cynical. Then he remembered what she had told him last night. She never grew up with a father, and if he could take a wild guess, he would have said that her mother planted those ideas in her head. No man could be trusted. A woman should rely on herself and no one else. Erica’s entire childhood would have been one jaded, dysfunctional mess, and this was the kind of baggage she carried into adulthood.

The mating bond was there and he knew everything out of her mouth was forced. She might have believed what she said, but her heart wasn’t in her accusations. Below the anger, below those hateful words, Erica really didn’t want this to end. The mating bond told him that much, otherwise, this thing between them would have unraveled already, wouldn’t it?

When Jake and I step out onto Fifth Avenue, the cold whips through our bulky coats. The air has that expectant heaviness that feels as if it will snow at any moment. We hurry home and make hot chocolate. My boxes of cookies are hidden away, ready for tomorrow.

“I have something for you,” I say shyly as we sit in the living room, sipping our hot chocolate. “I don’t want to give it to you at your parents'. Do you want it now or tomorrow morning?”

Jake looks up from his mug; he has a chocolate mustache. “Now, please,” he blurts.

I go into Vee’s room, where I hid Jake’s present, and pull it out from under her bed. I carry it back to the couch and hand him the wrapped gift, and he grins, “I love surprises.”

He tears open the wrapping, revealing the framed collage inside. There is a Snowy Owl in the center and then in seven smaller pictures around the edge: there is a yellow-rumped warbler, a palm warbler, a northern cardinal, a white-throated sparrow, a black-capped chickadee and a dark-eyed junco. The last one is a lovely wood thrush to commemorate the job he got me.

“These are the birds we’ve seen when we were together in the park, not the actual picture as I don’t have a camera, but pictures of the birds plus, of course, the wood thrush,” I babble. “I know you hate John Foster, but you seem to like birds, and I thought this could be something for you to remember me by―you know, for when this whole thing is over.” I wave my hands nervously then clasp them at my chest, waiting.

Jake tilts his head and replies, “I love it. You are right. I do like seeing birds with you.” His expression shifts. “But let’s not talk about this whole thing being over. That will just make me sad.”

My heart swells, “Deal.”

We sit sipping our cocoa and talk about each of the birds. I made myself the exact same collage, something to brighten my room when I’m back at my parents’, alone again. I’ll remember each bird sighting. This moment, too. I’m already storing it away, something to take out and examine when the days grow long.

Padlocked is an epic historical and visionary novel that follows the lives of a group of ordinary people who find themselves in extraordinary, life-altering circumstances as Nazi Germany invades Poland in 1939.

Two foreign photojournalists, an American and a Spaniard, are trapped between armies at Festungsfront Oder-Warthe-Bogen, along Poland’s western border with Germany. It is Hank’s last overseas assignment, and he’s been counting the days until he can go home to North Carolina to be with his family. Rafe fled Spain after the dictator, Francisco Franco, targeted his family. The experience changed him, and he now sees the rise of fascism in Europe as a battle between good and evil. They will find themselves embedded with the Polish, Nazi, and Soviet forces at varying times, forcing them to face moral and ethical decisions in their struggles to survive.

A young woman is separated from her sister in Warsaw as the Nazis encircle it. Agata made a vow that she would return to take Elsa to safety, but soldiers and barbed wire prevent her from entering the newly established Jewish sector. All the places mentioned in Padlocked are real locations, including Guernica, Spain, and the following locations in Poland: Bedzin, Oswiecim, Warsaw, and Auschwitz-Birkenau.

In one of the first chapters, two main characters, Hank and Rafe, are working as photojournalists along the border of Poland and Germany when the Nazis invade. Their location, Festungsfront Oder-Warthe-Bogen, is real and today a museum and tourist site. It was considered one of the most technologically advanced fortifications constructed by the Third Reich. It was built between 1934 and 1938 along the German-Polish border under the pretext of protecting Germany from Polish and Soviet invasions. It was captured by the Soviets in 1945, and only then did the full extent of the fortifications become clear. The central section, called the Boryszyn Loop, was up to 130 feet deep, contained twenty miles of tunnels, and even included a railway station, engine rooms, and barracks. The tunnels even had electricity, including an extensive electric light system.

Adolf Hitler visited the site in 1935, impressed by the advanced technology used in its construction. When Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939, the extensive network of tunnels and over one hundred pillboxes kept the build-up and initial advance underground and more secretive.

Oddly, it took only three days of fighting for the Soviets to capture it in 1945. This was partly due to the fortifications becoming undermanned in the waning months of the war as Nazi troops were deployed elsewhere.

Although the Red Army blew up much of the fortification to prevent its future use, parts of the Festungsfront Oder-Warthe-Bogen, located within Polish borders since the end of World War II, are open to the public today as tourist attractions. It is now one of the 10 largest hibernation sites for bats in Europe, housing approximately 40,000 bats across 12 species.

Visitors to the site can tour a museum that houses a variety of exhibits on the engineering and technological aspects of the tunnels and their historical significance during World War II. If you plan a trip to Poland, some of the tunnels are open to visitors during the summer months. They are closed in the winter to protect the bats, and bat doors have been installed that keep people out while allowing the bats to move freely in and out of the tunnels. The short tour takes about 1.5 hours, while the long tour takes almost 3 hours. The closest town, should you want to visit, is Miedzyrzecz.

Max was unprepared for the pandemonium as he stepped outside the building. He supposed it made sense as he could hear the voices from his office even if he hadn’t been able to make out the words. Still, it was jarring to see people who would normally walk with controlled purpose now rushing this way and that, as though the sky were falling. It made him hasten his steps, his heartbeat quickening as he joined the throngs. Many stopped along the way to cheer on the passing army vehicles, but he dodged around them, eager to get his book and get back to work. He didn’t want the soldiers to give his office to anyone else in his absence.

“Max! Max!”

At the sound of his name, he almost hid, thinking his ruse was discovered, but he quickly realized the voice was female. His eyes darted around the crowded faces. After a moment, the horde parted, and Stella rushed through to him.

“They’re on our doorstep!” she shouted excitedly. Her face was aglow, and he wanted nothing more than to scoop her into his arms and kiss her.

But, as others glanced their way, he grabbed her hand and led her to a quieter area. “Stop smiling,” he directed, swinging her around to face him.

“Why?” she demanded.

“They are not here yet. Do you want the Polish Army to pick you up?”

“Why would they? I have done nothing wrong.”

“Oh? Now that they are here and we are locked in a battle with them, you and I are collaborators.”

“Huh! That is not true.”

“Isn’t it?”

“It is not. We knew nothing of their plans to invade. We only know that we like their system of government.”

“And you don’t think they are here to change our system of government to their own?”

“Isn’t it exciting?”

“Stop it, I say. Stop it!” Max wiped his forehead. “What are you doing here, anyway?”

“The shop where I worked closed.”

“Closed? Why?”

Stella shrugged. “Excitement. Fear. Maybe a little of both.” She peered at him, her eyes narrowing. “Why are you here and not in the mayor’s office? I would have thought you’d be very busy there.”

“I am very busy.” He pulled at his suit jacket as if straightening it. “I have been promoted.”

“Promoted! To what?”

“I am now a liaison to the military.”

“The Polish military?”

“Do you see another here?” He waved his hand toward the tanks passing by them.

“What are you doing for them?” she breathed, her brow furrowing.

“English translation.”

“You don’t speak English!”

“How do you know that? I do, actually. And I am on a mission, and you are delaying me.”

“Be that way, then.” She pouted briefly before adding, “What will you do when the Nazis arrive in Będzin?”

“How do you know that they will?”

She shrugged. “I am hedging my bets.”

“For right this moment, today, I am a military liaison. That is all I know for now.” He waved as though pushing her away. “Now, go.”

As she started to leave him, he pulled her back into an embrace and kissed her. Startled, he thought she might pull away, but she didn’t. She leaned into him, her tongue flicking inside his mouth and her body pressing against him. She smelled of flowers and musk, and he held her more tightly as he inhaled her essence. Then she abruptly stepped back. “Call on me later,” she said, “when you are no longer working your military liaison shift.”

Then she was gone, as if she had never been there; her petite figure disappeared among the taller men and women crowding the sidewalk. He stared in the direction she’d gone, but when he didn’t spot her among the cluster of people, he turned back in the direction of home.

My full name is Patricia McClelland Terrell, and I have been writing under the pen name p.m.terrell ever since a publisher presented me with my first fiction book cover. The graphic designer had also entered my name in lower-case letters; my editor hated it, and I loved it. It’s been p.m.terrell ever since.

I began writing when I was nine years old, inspired by a schoolteacher and elementary school principal. Scott-Foresman published my first book, a computer instructional for universities, in 1984. Scott-Foresman, Dow-Jones (Richard D. Irwin branch), Palari Publishing, Paralee Press, and Drake Valley Press have published 27 books to date.

Before embarking on a full-time writing career, I founded McClelland Enterprises, Inc., in the Washington, D.C., area in 1984, specializing in workplace computer instruction. I opened another business, Continental Software Development Corporation, in 1994, which focused on custom application development, programming, website design and development, and cybersecurity.

I was honored to be the first female President of the Chesterfield County/Colonial Heights Crime Solvers. Since moving to North Carolina, I served on the boards of the Robeson County Friends of the Library and the Robeson County Arts Council.

How Journals, Old Letters, and Diaries Inspire Me

Since I was a child, I’ve been fascinated by diaries, journals, and old letters. It’s not that I’m a habitual journal keeper or letter writer—it’s that I’m curious and nosey! I want to draw the curtains, peek through the windows of people’s lives, hear their voices, and commune with them. Reading journals, diaries, and old letters allows me do that!

I think of these as a reflection archetype, sympathetic to the protagonist’s journey, or a sage who provides a systematic approach for making choices at the “grim crossroads.” These written reflections—whether a letter, journal, or diary—serve two roles in each of my novels. They are the protagonist’s or a secondary character’s unvarnished inner voice, sharing inner thoughts, emotions, and conflicts, and they are the catalyst that propels the protagonist forward into deeper thought and resolution.

So, it’s no surprise that letters play a subtle yet crucial role in the rising action, climax, and resolution in my current novel, A Proof of Love. And it’s one particular letter, written four decades earlier, that places the puzzle pieces together for the bond among the protagonist, Katie, and the secondary characters, Rose and Ned.

What inspired the letters in A Proof of Love? I asked myself the simple question:

What if the poignancy of Vietnam War letters and grief became the catalyst for written messages of gratitude that strengthened the relationship and elevated the happiness of the protagonist and secondary characters?

The answer to that question is in A Proof of Love.

A deep bow of gratitude to the little-known writers of journals, letters, and diaries whose words have inspired me.

Gram taught me to be independent, manage my anxieties, and have confidence in myself, showing me how to use my imagination to wiggle out of a jam or face the “grim crossroads” when confused or sad.

The first time I cried and lost it over a complicated computer problem, she said, “Be inventive, Katie! What can you do to calm down and think things through?”

We put our heads together to come up with ideas. Gram said she brewed herself a cup of tea when needing a break. Mom worked on crossword puzzles. Dad played solitaire. My one decadent delight was a FatBoy ice cream, and that’s how Gram and I hatched the plan of taking two ice cream sandwiches and hiding them under the frozen vegetables to create my private emergency stash.

“Close your eyes, breathe, take a bite, and replace the leftovers. No one will suspect anything. Our little secret. . .”

Before embracing writing fiction, I was the author of health informatics and leadership textbooks. Later, I put my leadership experience to use as a leadership coach, focusing on supporting others to fulfill their leadership and economic potential. Kate grew up in a woodsy New England town where summer days at the lake seemed to last forever. She read her first historical romance at age eleven when a teacher challenged her to find a book in the library written by an author she’d never heard of. Thus began a life-long love of love stories.

Well, the quiet life told me to f-off and now I’m stuck on a damn quest to find the God of Light, wherever that idiot happens to be.

I flexed the magic in my hands, getting a feel for the power while I decided what I wanted to do. The key was destroyed, no longer able to suck Elohi back to hell nor able to lock Diomedes back inside it’s dark realm. But it allowed Diomedes to roam Quivleren freely and that was the damn problem. Diomedes needed to die.

To say I was scared was an understatement. It all came down to war. All of us, every paranormal being I knew of, was gathered to take on the ilk of Diomedes and the jerk head himself. The dragons had yet to show. I had a gut feeling they were going to be another problem.

Shaking the nerves free of my shoulders, I teleported to where Diomedes was last known to be. Vampires scurried around the outside of the building, trying to act all heroic with dark glares in their eyes and baring their fangs. I found them entirely stupid. I shoved my way past them, heading inside to Diomedes.
