The challenges this country faces to better position itself for a positive future are significant. While not unachievable, they are indeed undeniably difficult and require strong, sound, forward-thinking leadership across all facets of our democracy. Most of America’s obstacles require a significant change in mentality.

The real face of change comes from you, though it is not a physical feature you can see in the mirror. It is your vote. Your vote is what can help decide who that leadership is made up of and what direction it will take towards facing our country’s challenges.

There’s never been a more important time to vote than right now. It feels like we keep saying that but that’s because it’s true. The most important time to vote will always be ‘right now.’ We at Romanelli encourage you all to learn about issues at hand and who the candidates are that can help us all overcome pitfalls of our society. And we encourage you to then go vote for those candidates. Vote to help supply our democracy and future with reforming legislation. 

We are once again closing the office on Election Day so our staff can cast their votes. We can think of nothing more important than exercising our right to make our community, our country the best it can be. 

Something else that matters: turning Election Day into a national holiday so workers can vote. Nearly 50% of the United States’ population is the every-business-day American worker. That means that roughly 165 million Americans cannot get the day off to go vote. In today’s world, that is decidedly unacceptable. ‘Let workers vote’ is a passionate initiative we launched in 2020. We ask that you help us push the rights for workers to vote on the most important day of the year in our democracy.

Every American deserves the right to cast their vote, regardless of when or where they work. Keeping Election Day on a normal business day just doesn’t make sense anymore. If it was created for the convenience of voters 200 years ago, why can’t it be moved to a day that’s convenient for voters today? Short answer: it can be.

Making Election Day a federal holiday would allow millions of American workers to take part in their most important role in our democracy…on the most important day in our democracy.

Being a small business owner creates more flexibility in the way we can use our time. The time is ours to decide how to use it.

When it comes to Election Day, it is often hard for employees to wait in line to cast their votes. The lines are long and wait times are up. Taking 2 or 3 hours on a lunch break just isn’t feasible and if an employee’s shift doesn’t coincide with the hours of the polling stations, they may not get to vote at all. It’s an unfortunate byproduct of voting on a business day.

To us, inaccessible = unacceptable.

As a small business owner, you can help let your workers vote. We understand that not every business owner may be able to shut down for the day but there are other creative ways you can help let your employees get to the polling stations without having to worry about how long it takes them.

Try staggering shifts or allowing longer lunch hours for this day, for those who may be scheduled to work during polling hours. Consider swapping an existing holiday, such as President’s Day or Columbus Day for Election Day. Or if your employees can work from home, let them put their time in from there throughout the day, where they can easily make up the time from when they were at the polling stations.

Please help your workers vote any way you can.

Many polling stations around the country are run by volunteer teams often comprised of retired seniors. Due to COVID-19, a large number of these folks may not be coming out to help at their local stations. This is where you may come in.

If there aren’t enough poll workers to cover the work at the polling stations, some stations may close and merge with others, causing even longer lines of voters than there already are. Please consider helping to fill the void.

Employees who work on Election Day (and that’s millions of workers) have a difficult time trying to cast their vote on during lunch hours, or before or after their shifts. Choosing to become a poll worker can help ensure as many of these regular business-hour workers can vote as possible.

One of the most important things we can do as American citizens is vote.

However, nearly 50% of the United States’ population is the every-business-day American worker, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Keeping Election Day on a Tuesday is decidedly inconvenient for our society and millions of workers who struggle to find the time to make it to the polls.

So here at Romanelli, we got a little creative about it and thought, ‘Why not swap one of our other holidays for Election Day?’ It’s such a small change but it can make a big difference. We took a vote to see if the entire staff felt the same and it was unanimous. We will be closing the office on Election Day to go vote.

As a short-term goal this year, we encourage other business owners to do the same if they can.

As for a long-term goal, we would love to see the support for making Election Day a national holiday catch momentum.
