Speaking of breakfast foods, here’s another dish that can be enjoyed with maple syrup:

Madame Donais’ Traditional French Toast 

(Serves at least 6)

12 eggs
1/4 cup maple syrup
2 tablespoons of liquid lard
Vanilla, to your liking
3 1/2 cups of milk
Homemade bread sliced ??thick (1 lb.)

Place all ingredients except the bread into blender and mix. Pour the mixture into a dish and soak the bread slices. Next, bake the slices with a waffle iron. Finally, serve with maple syrup and fruit, sprinkled with confectioner sugar.

1 – Forget e-cards or Hallmark, try writing a love letter or poem for your beloved by hand.

2 – Bring out your inner kindergartener and make you own card and/or decorations using construction paper.

3 – Create a mix-tape. These days you don’t need a dual cassette deck, you can use services such as Spotify or iTunes.

4 – Web-clip beautiful photos to create a virtual holiday getaway or evening out. It just might give that special someone ideas for next year.

5 – Didn’t receive roses? Change your computer’s background to a bouquet.

6 – Worried about the calories in chocolates? Bake your own low-calorie Valentine’s treats. Recipes abound on the internet.

7 – Feeling like you’ve put on the pounds since last Valentine’s Day? Take a romantic hike or walk in the park.

8 – Can’t get a dinner reservation? Cook your own romantic dinner. Not a great cook? It’s the thought that counts, but if all else fails, keep the pizza delivery number handy.

9 – Single and don’t want to think about Valentines? Keep yourself busy by finally starting a project that you’ve been meaning to undertake.

10 – Just not that into Valentine’s Day? Whether you’re part of a duo or not, use the day to volunteer to help those in need.

Wondering how all of those Winter Carnival attendees keep themselves warm from all the cold and snow? In addition to bundling up, some of the adults are probably drinking “Caribou.” For the uninitiated, Caribou is an alcoholic drink made from port or red wine, a hard liquor such as whisky — although some recipes use brandy or rum — and sometimes sweetened with maple syrup or soda pop. It can be served at any temperature.

While legend has it that Caribou was named after a drink from colonial times that contained of a mix of actual caribou blood and whisky, today there are a number of different variations of the drink — and they don’t contain unsavory ingredients.

If you’re unable to travel to Québec for Winter Carnival this year, Caribou is easy to make at home. Here’s a recipe from the official Carnival website:

A tradition dating back to the early days of the French colony, Carnival is more than your typical a pre-Lent celebration.

Key events and attractions include:

• Opening ceremony at the Ice Palace, hosted by the Bonhomme – the giant snowman “Ambassador” of Winter Carnival.
• Colorful Night Parades – during the 2^nd and 3^rd weekends.
• Snow sculpture contest – featuring the work of sculptors from all over the world.
• Bikini snow bath – for those who really love the cold!
• Canoe race on the St. Lawrence River between Quebec City and Lévis.
• Dog-sled race through the snow-covered streets of the Old City.

This year’s Carnival will take place from January 27 to February 12. Most events take place on the historic Plains of Abraham. Dress warmly or warm up by drinking caribou – a traditional Quebec winter drink – at one of the ice bars along the Grande Allée.

The purchase of an effigy – a small Bonhomme keepsake figurine – grants visitors access to most events. The cost is $13 and they are easily available at kiosks, at over 450 stories in Quebec City, as well as online for groups of 25 or more. (Note: some events are free.)

More than 80 competitors including men and women will slide down the artificial icy runway spread in the heart of Old Quebec to the delight of spectators. This infernal descent of 535 meters long has hairpin turns, steep slopes and insane jumps. It is enough to make this world unique championship one of the hardest on ice competition.
