Trajan’s Market in Rome will be hosting one of the most fascinating exhibitions of the year until 10 June. The show dedicated to modern Arab calligraphic art is presented thanks to the patronage of Jordan’s Queen Rania Al Abdullah. Promoted by Roma Capitale, Political Culture and Old Town Centre Department – Superintendency of Cultural Heritage, the exhibition intends to introduce Europeans to an Arab school of art that originates from this world’s intellectual and cultural foundation. The 75 works by 57 different artists on display illustrate the uniqueness of an artistic style that is deeply rooted in Arab cultural history yet adapted to the present through the use of modern techniques and tools. The two themes elaborated for the exhibit by the Arab Calligraphic School are “Sacred” – quotations regarding religious themes that convey a spiritual or moral message – and the exquisitely secular “Profane”.

Rome’s National Gallery of Modern Art is exhibiting a large number of works by the great American artist, the icon of Pop Art. His paintings-serigraphs (from Marilyn Monroe and Campbell’s soup cans to Elvis and dollar bill logos) became symbols of American art and culture. The works being presented in this large retrospective exhibition “Andy Warhol Headlines – Andy Warhol and the Media” are centred upon his linguistic symbols. Warhol is being represented at the National Gallery of Modern Art by one of his “political still lifes”: Hammer and Sickle (1972), one of the works from his Hammer and Sickle series inspired by Italy. The GNAM exhibit is being presented in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., the Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt and The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The show is curated by Molly Donovan with the collaboration of John J. Curley, Anthony E. Grudin, John G. Hanhardt, Calie Angell and Matt Wrbican.

The great artist Omar Galliani is back in Rome on exhibit. Galliani is the outstanding exponent of the Magico Primario post modern movement and the Anachronistic Group of artists of the 1980’s. In this technological day and age, Galliani still makes charcoal and pencil drawings. 25 preparatory sketches are on display in the Carlo Bilotti Museum at the in the Villa Borghese Orangery. The show’s title “Omar, Roma, Amor”, is a play on these three anagrammed words and unites the artist’s name with the city he is celebrating with this particular exhibit – Rome – by illustrating the sentiment that ties him to Italy’s capital. His works are filled with the dualism of the light-shadows of chiaroscuro and make images appear and dissolve like “figures of the souls” which take on the value of visions and symbols.
