Top Ten World Cup Heroes Paolo Rossi - True Blue

2010-02-25T10:19:00.000-08:00

Paolo Rossi played in two world Cups for Italy, his priceless contribution to the Azzuri's 1982 World Cup triumph is legendary, all the more as it seemed he was destined to never play in that world cup.

The gifted Rossi was actually suspended from football for 3 years in 1980 after it was alleged he was involved in fixing football matches. The famous betting scandal erupted after Rossi's team Perugina drew 2-2 with Avellino.Rossi scored both goals, but he was accused of taking a bribe! The match fixing involved a huge syndicate and there were dozens of arrests.for Rossi's part he got a three year ban, however he always protested his innocence, and it was reduced to two allowing Rossi to play in the 1982 World Cup.

Top European Team in 2010 World Cup

2010-02-21T07:00:00.000-08:00

Are Germany Best Bet

The history of the World Cup has shown us that a European team has not won the trophy outside it's own continent.

I still think it will be pain for Spain, and the quarter finals at best for England.Unpredictable Holland are just that.

So who will be the top European team in South Africa 2010?

Well Germany always do well, only Brazil have a better overall record.Looking at their easy group they should win it and then play either USA or Slovenia, then possibly Argentina or Uruguay in the quarter finals.Well then anything could happen but don't they always seem to play in the semis?

They have a solid reputation and are 17/2 to be the top European team.

Top Ten World Cup Heroes.Franz Beckenbauer-The Kaiser

Beckenbauer was a great defender, but a very versatile payer and was also a brilliant midfielder. He was probably best known internationally for his invention of the role of sweeper.

He was also a superb captain and it was fitting he lifted the World Cup in1974 because 16 years later the Trophy would be in his hands again and of course this true legend would make World Cup history as he became the first man to captain and coach a World Cup winning team

Best Side I think

The Arsenal back-pass

OK , so I actually missed this. But it seems it has got everybody having different opinions.

Once again it seems to me common sense has not prevailed.I have never seen a quick free-kick taken resulting from a back-pass

It seems harsh that a quick free kick is allowed when the keeper handed the ball to the ref and did not have time to get in position.
The ref was barely looking when the kick was taken.
The ref seemed to impede Campbell.

The solution is just to scrap the indirect free-kick.(It can end up in a ludicrous position anyway!): then award the attacking team a penalty, where it can be defended properly.

A woman's place

Women are much more prominent in football nowadays. t may just be the opinions of the WAG's or many of the the leading ladies who play soccer as the women's game is steadily rising in popularity. Many football clubs also have women directors helping to run the clubs.

In life there is always plenty to be said about women, and women also have plenty to say.So here are some of my favourite quotes involving the ladies and football.

Women should be in the kitchen, the discotheque and the boutique but not in football. Ron Atkinson, when manager of Sheff. Wed.

Fat lot of good they were

Watching the classic matches on ESPN yesterday,I just had to admire how good Jan Molby was when playing for Liverpool. Great passing that split defences and an excellent reading of the game. Although, actually he looked a bit round ,some may even say fat!

So who are your favourite fat players .here is my top 5.

5 Franny Lee. The Man City player packed his weight behind a fierce shot, didn't affect his diving either.

4 Mark Viduka. The Australian used his backside well ,players could not get near him!

3 Gazza. Still had the excess natural ability to go with his other excesses.

2 JanMolby. Ex Liverpool and Danish International made it look easy.Class.

Terry as Bad as Garrincha ?

2010-02-10T01:24:00.000-08:00

World Cup Winner

Mane Garrincha won two World Cup winners medals for Brazil in 1958 and 1962.

Many people regard him as their greatest player even ahead of Pele.

Garrincha-King of the Dribblers

My memories of Garrincha were revitalised by the latest BBC world cup series, and also realised he was the true king of the dribblers! Then i read his biography by Ruy Castro, and found this really was a fascinating story of triumph and tragedy!

Little Bird

Manuel Francisco dos Santos was born in1933 at Pau Grande , he joined Botafogo in 1953 and made his international debut in the 1957 South American Championship, and made his first world cup appearance in Sweden in1958. If only it was that simple for Mané because it is quite astonishing he ever played football at all!

Another Fine Messi Performance

2010-02-09T13:34:00.000-08:00

A great performance from The FIFA World Player of the Year, at the weekend as he scored another fantastic goal and set up another as he seemed to beat Getafe on his own.

World Cup Player to Watch

Of course Lionel Messi is a player to watch in the forthcoming World Cup in south Africa

The little Argentinian is also used to scoring great goals against Getafe.

Lionel Messi is the current holder of the coveted Ballon d'Or prize awarded to the European player of the year.

He is a player with immense skill and talent, and seems to be getting better and better. and many people regard the Barcelona player as the best in the world.

he may not be a great goalscorer but he certainly scores great goals.

Captain Sensible? Terry and England Cannot Win.

2010-02-06T07:32:00.000-08:00

The Captain's Tale

Whether England are capable of wining the World Cup in South Africa or not , The pundits now have a ready made excuse after the captains armband fiasco.

Any excuse could have been made for not making any of the candidates the England captain, and Ferdinand will come under more scrutiny as well as his fitness.

If Ferdinand is not fit and Gerrard becomes captain, who becomes vice captain? Is there still a way in for Terry through the back door?

Should Beckham go to the World Cup

Probably the best captain apart from Terry would be David Beckham, who has proved he has the passion and will to motivate the England team.

I virtually see him being in the squad as a non-playing captain.

Captain Fantastic a Great goal for England

Football icon and hero David Beckham's association with England will almost certainly carry on for many years into the future..

He has scored many great goals in his career for club and country , but never has this goal he scored for England been so great or so important in their desperate attempt to qualify for the World Cup. in 2002.

It is now 126 days to the start of the 2010 World Cup finals in South Afrrica , so we should be seeing quite a bit more of the official mascot Zakumi

2010 Mascot

Zakumi is the newest World Cup Mascot, he is a friendly green haired yellow leopard, and will front FIFAS marketing of the 2010 world cup finals in South Africa next summer. Soon you will be seeing a lot more of him.

Zakumi is derived from "ZA" an acronym for south Africa and "Kumi which translates into "10" from African language. He looks like the host with the most. A determined looking animal with a cheeky hint of attitude. His main priority is to turn this showcase event into a joyous and happy occasion, and bring out the true spirit of this colourful African continent.Oh yes, he will also make money.

Best and Worst at the ACON- CAF are Crap

2010-02-01T14:57:00.000-08:00

ACON Best player

It has to be the Egypt captain and play maker Ahmed Hassan, he made the team tick and scored two vital goals in the tough Quarter -final against Cameroon.

He has amassed an incredible 172 caps, and looks like he can go on and play for a lot longer.

ACON Worst player

The big names who play n the premiership and Europe were anything but impressive Song and Ya Ya Toure did not replicate any of their recent good form. But for me the worst was Didier Drogba , who seemed to play without any spirit and let his team down.

CAF are Crap

The biggest let down of all has been the confederation of African Football, not only have they fined Togo for pulling out of the tournament, they have banned them from entering the next two ACON tournaments.

Maybe it is time for the African nations to stick together and sympathise with Togo. All the countries should boycott the next tournament unless Togo are reinstated.

Togo did the right thing in respecting their dead countrymen, and taking time out to mourn. It is what any other Nation would have done.

The punishment is outrageous to decent people. The continent should unite and let their feelings be known.

Getting Hot for Saucy John Terry

2010-01-29T10:47:00.000-08:00

Bobby Moore lifting the trophy as England captain, I don't think it will be quite the same if it is John Terry in 2012.

Back in 1966 we had World Cup Willie. He may not be as famous as Sir Alf, Sir Geoff or Sir Bobby, but famous he is. For Willie was the first ever World Cup mascot.Emblazoned in a Union Jack shirt and shorts, the patriotic lion with a Beatles haircut, and boots that made him look like he was "bovvered" strode to the same success as the newly crowned World Champions England.

World Cup Willie first and greatest World Cup mascot

Terry's all gold

As wells his footballing medals John Terry also won the 2008 Dad of the Year award after a survey carried out by Daddies sauce. Now we know JT is keeping up his saucy image.

Just how well this will go down with England manager Capello, who already has strong views on the WAGS remains to be seen.

I can't see him changing his stance just because it is a team mates WAG.

Is his position of captain now in doubt ,do you think he should keep the captain's armband?

Any Hope for African teams at the World Cup?

2010-01-26T09:18:00.000-08:00

Africa's best

If we have seen the best of the African teams at this years ACON, then it looks grim for them for this years World Cup.

No team has set the tournament alight, and favourites Ivory Coast looked vastly overrated despite having four players playing in top European teams.

Defences have looked far from great, and I would like to say that I have seen a decent Goalkeeper, but this position seems to have been one of the biggest let downs.

Egypt now look set to make the tournament headlines by becoming the first team to win the trophy three times in succession,

Top ten African Nations Cup goals

Three to go down

Portsmouth must be favourites for many now, but who else will drop with them.My prediction is Burnley and Hull.

The common denominator between the two clubs is that they will both have lost their Manager's by the end of the season.

Soccer City Stadium

Johannesburg's Soccer CIty Stadium(also known as the First National Bank stadium) will hold the opening ceremony for the 2010 world cup, and host the 2010 world cup final.
The extensive renovations which began in 2007 are now complete. The stadium which originally opened in 1989 will be the third largest in Africa. The new design is based on traditional African pottery. The upper tier has now been extended ,and 99 new Executive suites have been added. Brand new changing rooms, floodlights and a state of the art circular roof complete the upgrade.

Gay footballers not quite just in fashion you know

2010-01-23T06:25:00.000-08:00

World Cup Match Winners(1) Wayne Rooney

I am going to start at the beginning and Wayne Rooney is certainly going to be the main man for England.

With the 2012 World Cup looming,England's chances seem to be resting more and more on the broad shoulders of the Manchester United main man. We all know he can score great goals, many out of nothing and this is what I like about this goal the brilliant improvisation after he already scored.

WAYNE ROONEY for England v Kazakhstan World Cup Qualifier June 2009

Jesus fined?

No wonder it is difficult for gay footballers in today's world as Napoli's Jesus Datolo is to be fined for posing in a gay men's magazine.

Even since Justin Fashanu's problems in the late 1980's it has become an almost taboo subject, even though there must be many more gay players in the sport .

Justin Fashanu now has a football team named after him.

Justin Fashanu was a self confessed bisexual and born again christian I remember him for two particular quotes:

"I would say that more than 25 per cent of football is gay. It's got to be higher than average. It is a very physical , closed world, a man's world and you form deep bonds with people you hardly know." 1992

"In football finding religion is considered as bad as being gay- if not worse. A former Forest team mate started calling me Brother Justin" 1990

Has homophobia in sport and football moved on?

Tevez does talking on the pitch

2010-01-20T06:31:00.000-08:00

Gary Neville does not need to get into a war of words with Carlos Tevez

Neville knows as much as any player hard work will make you a good footballer.Talent and hard work can make you a great footballer.

Tevez has show proven talent and consistency for all the Premiership teams he has played for, and surely greatness awaits him.

Why he is concerned with the £25 million price tag , I don't know. what about Bebatov, Ferdinand and Nani.

Gary Neville has proved his worth to Man U, and already admitted it is time to hang up his boots, and keep quiet as well.

They said it

"Because football is good for society" David Sullivan, publisher, on why he bought a controlling interest in Birmingham city in 1993.

Today society is good for football, as without the people who have the money to run football clubs, there would be very few football clubs.

How long for Portsmouth

"Pay up POMPEY " may be the new cries at Fratton Park soon. But seriously how long can this once proud club carry on with no income?

If the reported wage bill is £3 million a month gate receipts alone won't pay this , especially with postponements affecting turnover.

TV money is being held by the EPL and distributed to the clubs they owe money to from previous transfers

The club do not even own their own ground, the only assets they have left are the players themselves.

They club owe money to the Inland revenue and with Portsmouth's difficulties they will soon be calling for their money.

It is not all the players fault with sky high wages, the owners of Portsmouth don't seem to care and it is out of the real supporters hands. They are helpless to stop this demise.

Who next ?

We do not know the full story at Pompey, but we do know all the top clubs owe money.

The cracks are beginning to show. Is this the beginning of the end?

Life's a beach again

Ancelotti looks champion to me

Liverpool just couldn't hang on to win in a really dire game against Stoke City, Huth's last minute desperate effort also brought myself another loss, and I now have a new golden rule; DO NOT PUT MONEY ON LIVERPOOL. I know Liverpool were recently turned over by a beach ball, and for a while I thought it was going to be the beach towel next! The constant drying of the ball was really monotonous.

Fancy a bet,Liverpool to beat Stoke?

I know many Liverpool fans have a good sense of humour, and when i saw the price of 8/11 earlier in the week for Liverpool to win away at Stoke I thought someone is having a laugh.

Now as the snow settles and the Liverpool injury list grows ever longer ( Torres, Gerrard and now Benayoun ). Now the price for a Liverpool win is a more realistic 5/4.

Many people will think stoke have a good chance, impressive home form and a good win recently against Fulham.

As they say football is a funny old game. The Reds may be down, but not out. I will be backing the Liverpool players to show some pride and get back to wining ways.

Cameroon not on Song

2010-01-14T00:32:00.000-08:00

Great time to be a Red

Yet another shock result in the African cup of Nations as the fancied Cameroon go down 1-0 to Gabon. It was another poor game with some shocking defending (Song), great finish by Cousin, who sometimes manages a game for Hull.

I'm glad I haven't had a bet on these games as my Bank would be zero by now!My tip lay the favourites and back Egypt to win the Tournament.

Will Pele see an African team win the World Cup?

Not from what We've seen thus far, maybe the player's are shocked after the Togo episode or do not want to play this tournament in the middle of their club's domestic campaigns

I'm sure now there will be cries for the Cup of Nations to be held every four years.

Best so far for me has been the referee's, keeping the game flowing and not stopping the game when players have gone down easily.

Red ee steady Go!

Who will be the first t leave Liverpool now the Reds have been knocked out of the FA Cup.Benitez or Gerrard?

Gerrard for me ,he knows now he will never win any thing at Liverpool now.The way they are playing , the reds would be out of the Europa Cup if it started next week

A Red Faced Sir Alex

2010-01-13T03:34:00.001-08:00

It is easy to see why SAF might become even more red -faced particularly as the Blue Moon is beginning to rise in Manchester.

This is probably not the eye-opener you think it is for Tevez, but Sir Alex didn't think he was worth £25 million, but thought Berbatov was worth £28 million.

Tevez may see his value rise if Argentina have a successful World Cup.

When Ronaldo left Ferguson said Berbatov would play in his best position.Does he now think his best position is on the transfer list.

I still can't see city wining anything this season. So will Tevez stay at City?

For Sir Alex - Michael Owen at his best

Will an African team win the World Cup?

2010-01-12T12:31:00.000-08:00

Pele once said that an African team would win the World Cup by 2000,it now seems the continent has failed.

Cameroon were exciting in the 1986 world cup and reached the quarter finals in 1990.Senegal are the only other African nation to reach that stage (2002) .

Judging by the performances so far in ACON2010 I don't think so ,the strongest team Ivory Coast look jaded and will probably be burnt out by the summer.

South Africa, the host nation have a tough draw, and didn't even qualify for the ACON.

Do you think an African nation can win the next World Cup or are they just going to make up the numbers again.

Phil Taylor for England

2010-01-06T02:21:00.000-08:00

Fifteen times World champion Taylor the power of darts now wants to give the England football team the Power and the Glory. He believes his winning mentality can be passed on to the England manager and players.

A wining mentality is important in all sport and Phil says he would have made a fantastic football team captain or a manager in football.

So has "The Power" anything to offer Fabio and the boys?

Well probably yes, he certainly has. He is by far the best in his sport and almost untouchable, his opponents can only hope he has an off day.

Is Taylor ready to unveil his secrets to all, including his opponents? When he has finished at the top

he will probably reveal all in a book but not for a long time yet!

Capello will probably remember Glen Hoddles involvement with Eileen Drewery in the 1998 World Cup,He would not risk this scenario ,but believe he himself is the man to motivate England to World Cup glory in South Africa 2010.

Ballon d 'Or Sir Stan or Lionel ?

2009-12-01T10:46:00.000-08:00

Ballon d 'Or Winners

Sir Stanley Matthews was the first winner of the Ballon d 'O or European Footballer of the Year as it was then known.

Sir Stan was playing for Blackpool in 1956 and was known as the Wizard Of The Dribblers, The Seasiders only finished runners-up in the English Championship that year and he was still in the England team.He retired from football at the age of 50, and he said himself that he thought he had retired too early.

Lionel Messi of course is the star player and play maker for Barcelona in La Liga.He seems to have never stopped winning awards including World Soccer young player of the year award for three years running. Now the Argentinian is the latest winner of the Ballon D'Or, and for many people an obvious and deserved winner.

What I would like to know is who is or was the better player Stan or Lionel?Has anyone seen them both play and can they be compared?

World Cup Seeds

Now the guessing is over and the seeds are now known the big surprise is that Holland are in the top group of seeds and not France .So who will be in England's group now, will it be France? As everyone is having a guess, here is mine.

Romario in yet another comeback!

2009-11-27T06:51:00.000-08:00

Zakumi

The brazilian footballer Romario has made yet another comeback. He came on as a substitute for América Football Club against Artsul, replacing Adriano, unfortunatley he was unable to add to his vast goal tally.America did win the game though 2-0 and securing the Second Division Championship of Brazil.

Romario has said he wanted to play for America as it was the team supported by his late father, Edevair. So it was on November 25th 2009 that he made his father's dream come true.he hoperes to feature in a few more games for the team he now manages.

Romario claims he has scored 1003 goals, although FIFA have his tally at929.

Great Romario Quotes;

" God created me to delight with my goals"

" I'm like money, at the end of the day everybody quite likes me."

"I don't see there being a successor. There was only one Pele, only one Maradona, and there'll only ever be one Romario. However, in the penalty area I consider myself the best there's ever been

Save our soccer ,say no to Video Ref

Video Ref would ruin beautiful game

Football's guvnors FIFA have decided to call an extraordinary meeting on December the 2nd, let's hope they don't make any extraordinary decisions with the World cup coming up.With the recent over reaction to the Henry handball, we have had the frantic calls for the Video Ref who will scrutinise play using TV cameras .So will it work?

Not if the evidence from the cameras isn't clear cut and conclusive (we have all watched TV replays and still been left unconvinced)
Not if the game is going to be stopped for unnecessary offences

The risk is that football will end up as a stop start spectacle for many trivial incidents while we await the Video Ref's decisions. This will serve only to mar the beautiful game of it's spontaneity and atmosphere that is unique to football.

Managers and players have given the thumbs up to the" goal line officials" which have been used in the Europa cup. It now seems natural to have the"linesman" on all four sides of the pitch. What we need is the major decisions to be made on the pitch as they occur. Let, s hope FIFA don't score an own goal over the video technology.
