Most of NOLA’s speakers are BOX-LESS for the mid’s and tweeters. But NOLA has recently introduced a new speaker: the BOXER. It’s a 6: 2-way in a box type enclosure. It’s only about 16″ high, 8″ wide and 10″ deep.

Sound: Truly amazing… The box disappears and what’s left is the music. The detail, the texture, the amazing bass presence is staggering for it’s size. It sounds like a planar speaker without the placement drawbacks.

You’ve got to hear these gems!

The FCC designated the city as a test market for the transition a few months back and this week, they said Go. The rest of the U.S. will make the strong digital TV transition on February 17, 2009.

The early testing is being done to help troubleshoot potential problems associated with the transition. When TV stations make the transition to digital, any home receiving a TV signal from something other than a cable or satellite box, will no longer receive basic television stations. Analog TV owners can receive a credit to purchase a converter box so that they will be able to watch TV on their current set. Otherwise, analog TV users will need to purchase a new digital TV.

Shelby Wood of The Oregonian has written an interesting piece on the electronics recycling trend that is taking root in Oregon. A new eCycling program has been adopted by state legislators which effectively puts a requirement on all TV and electronics manufacturers selling in Oregon to pay to have their products recycled when needed. This means that Oregonians will be able to drop off old CRT and LCD TVs as well as other electronics off at recycling sites at no charge. Additionally, the program ensures that the computer and TV recyclers follow environmental guidelines for their disposal.

Again, Oregon is taking the lead on ensuring that harmful electronics no longer find their ways into landfills around the U.S.

You can read Wood’s”We recycle, but do we e-cycle? Gearing up for a new Oregon habit” online.

Panasonic is straightening out the confusion regarding plasma televisions. The plasma screen manufacturer has released a press release in which it states that the 2008 Panasonic Viera plasma line maintains full brightness for up to tens of thousands of hours of use. Only after that do their brightness begin to wane. The 1080p plasma models reach half brightness at around 100,000 hours, or after 42 years of use, based on daily viewing averages. How many households hold onto their TVs for over 40 years in this day and age?

Panasonic hopes to clarify the misconception that plasmas don’t last as long as their competitor, the LCD flat panel. It has been widely believed by electronics retailers that the key disadvantage of plasmas was this diminishing of screen brightness over time.

The most popular TV brand in North America, according to the survey, is Samsung which made up 19.1% of all TVs shipped. Sony was the second most popular LCD manufacturer. Panasonic was the most popular plasma TV manufacturer.

Does all this shipment data equate to sales popularity. Tough to say. Certainly the resellers are banking on these brands as being the most popular this upcoming holiday season.

The Motif LCR (left|center|right) speaker is a compact high perforamnce surround speaker that can be used in any sleak speaker system. The speaker has a 5″ mid/woofer with an aluminimum chassis and powerful magent system. It can be mounted vertically or horizontally and the cabinet is made of solid medium density fiberboard for reduced resonance.

Here is what Stereoplay had to say about the speaker:

“The fact that audiophile factors like high fidelity and 3D soundstage remain in focus, makes it even better.”

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sharp and Sony are being brought together by the Japanese government for a project. It is reported in the Nikkei News that the companies will work together on mass-producing organic electroluminescent (OEL) technology displays. The technology is similiar to organic light-emitting diode (OLED) but rather than using diodes, it uses semiconductors. The goal, as reported, is for the group to produce 40″ displays and larger using the technology within the next 10 years. OELs are said to be able to be built thin enough to be mounted on a wall like a poster.

Where is the future of televisions going? It is amazing to think what we may see in our lifetime when it comes to home entertainment systems. The flat panel displays we are clamoring for now may be relics in a matter of 10 years if we may soon have brighter, more efficient displays that can be simply “pinned” to the wall with special mounting screws. Think of the dorm rooms of the future? That clunky 14 inch TV I cherished in college will be archaic compared to a poster size screen above your desk.

There is a great article in the July Home Theater Magazine on home owners that use their television sets to listen to music at home. The article sites a survey by Parks Associates which found that one-third of consumers listen to music on their home theater video display – CRT, LCD or Plasma.

The frustration this gives writer Mark Fleischmann is clear as a bell in this article, and for good reason. There are so many inexpensive yet completely incredible home theater speakers and audio sets available to consumers in a wide range of budgets. There is no need to use the low-grade audio component in a television set.

But I won’t ruin all the info in the article. Read it for yourself at hometheatermag.com.
