Designer Rachel Roy Visits Haiti For Upcoming Macy’s Collaboration

Rachel Roy has an eye for fashion and place in her heart for Haiti’s women as well. The fashion designer is working with Haitian President Michel Martelly to protect women in the earthquake torn country.

Roy was in Haiti last week along with mogul homemaker Martha Stewart, to visit Haiti in anticipation for an upcoming collaboration with the country’s artisans. Both women were invited to visit the island with Macy’s Chairman and CEO Terry Lundgren who took them to meet Haitians who have been making and selling in 25 of his stores in the United States since October. Both Roy and Stewart have lines available at Macy’s.

The roots of the project were inspired by President Bill Clinton’s Foundation, which has been seeking ways to help Haiti get on its feet through private sector investment.

ABC News reports:

Macy’s, Fairwinds Trading and the BrandAid Foundation developed a plan for Macy’s to commission Haitian handicrafts, which the retailer began selling in its stores and online in time for last year’s Christmas season. On macys.com, prices for the Haitian items range from a vase that costs $54 to a large bowl that sells for $120. Paintings of Haiti’s marketplaces are also on sale at $109.
“We sold out and sold well,” Lundgren told journalists as he paused among tables topped with salad bowls, jewelry, patchwork quilts and chairs made of recycled metal.

The group visited women in Port-au-Prince’s crowded refugee tent cities. Many of the women in the tents have fallen victim to sexual abuse and violence living in the tents. According to an insider, meeting the women touched Roy so much that she is planning a return trip “to meet with Martelly again and take him up on the offer of being a voice for those women.”

It’s not the first time Roy has given her help to Haiti. The designer was part of the CFDA’s “To Haiti With Love” campaign that raised money for the country after it was shaken by the January 2010 earthquake.

River Plate Relegation Incites Chaos

If you watch football (soccer for Americans) you may have heard that River Plate, the most successful Argentinean football team, has been relegated to the second division on Sunday during their match with Belgrano de Cordoba. While some commentators blame the team's lack of maturity, constant firing and hiring of coaches, or staggering corruption years in the making River Plate's downfall has been a culmination of all plausible factors. And the fallout after the 1-1 match created chaos amongst River Plate fans. In the video below, you'll see men screaming crying and cursing at the team who had to be held within a fortress of security guards after their fall from grace. Police and guards had to even use a water hose on a certain section of the stadium. Despite their next season playing in second tier football, I'm sure that River Plate will rise again and take its place back at the top of Argentinean football.

Lord Glennconner was a multimillionaire aristocrat who transformed the West Indian island of Mustique into a haven for other rich White folks. He was cared for by loyal manservant Kent Adonai, who waited on him hand and foot for thirty years. It was Adonai who slept at the foot of his employer’s bed and Adonai who tried to revive him after he suffered a fatal heart attack, driving him to the hospital to find that he was already gone.

And it was Adonai who was named the recipient of Lord Glenconner’s estate in his will.

Unsurprisingly, the widow is not pleased. The Daily Mail reports that Lady Anne Glenconner is asking Adonai to “do the right thing” and return part of his inheritance to the family. Lord Glenconner changed his will seven months before he passed away; previously, his heir and grandson Cody, 17, was to receive the bounty. Adonai recieved the beachside home in St Lucia, all of it’s contents and a valley-yes, a valley, overlooking the Carribean. A challenge to the will would be impossible under St Lucian law, but Lady Anne has appealed for the return of items she says belong to her and for Adonai to honor what she believes were his true wishes before becoming too sick to realize what he was doing. She told the Mail “We are hoping Kent will follow what we all knew were my husband’s wishes — namely that Cody would be left his estate in St Lucia.”

Well, that ain’t what the will says. Meanwhile, Adonai (who sported a fetching dead homie shirt bearing his boss’s pic) has cleared the beach home and is planning an estate sale at an auctioneer house. This man, who Lady Anne claims to be illiterate, btw, slept at the foot of his boss’ bed since he was 17 years old. He was not an assistant or a housekeeper, he was a manservant. He earned every penny of his new fortune and I hope that he does not return anything, short of Lady Anne’s personal effects. Take your hairbrushes and move it along, ma’am.

While we take pride in using our Haitian heritage for creativity and inspiration in our menswear, big fashion houses are now using African prints (primarily from Lagos, Nigeria) for womens and menswear this summer. Kim Jones of Louis Vuitton credits his childhood in the African wildlife that he grew up with:

PARIS — Kim Jones has started his new role as men’s style director at Louis Vuitton with a mission: to embrace, via the luxury label’s travel history, the craft and culture of Africa.

Kim Jones was inspired by his childhood in Africa while designing his debut menswear collection at Louis Vuitton.

The vivid red and purple-blue of Masai blankets are a striking new take on the famous LV Damier check. And the classic squares also are given a splotchy water-color look and texture for both shirts and scarves.

“Growing up in Africa, living with little lizards, snakes and elephants or being chased by baboons — it never really goes away,” said Mr. Jones, 32, referring to family life in the wild with his hydrogeologist father.

Having worked on sportswear for Umbro and more recently at Dunhill, the British-born designer took the opportunity of a change of job to fill in some travel gaps, going to Easter Island and planning a trip to Madagascar this summer.

“As much as possible I like to get away from cities,” said Mr. Jones, who uses as his ultimate reference Peter Beard’s 1965 book “End of the Game” about the destruction of African wildlife, especially the elephant.

The designer calls his new work “my dream job,” marveling about how quickly things can be made in the vast, but focused, luxury group. His experiments for the spring/summer 2012 season include wood work, as a play both on Africa and on the carpentry that was essential to make Louis Vuitton trunks in the 1920s and ’30s, There are also pens for writing a traveler’s diary (as luxury today means not tapping on a laptop).

A water-resistant silk jacket is designed as just the thing to wear in the Amazon rain forest, while sailing or even for urban weekends, while roughly woven backpacks are tough enough to face the trail to Machu Picchu in Peru or the rigors of downtown city life.

“The thread is travel. It’s the DNA of the brand — but it is not just for travel but for leisure as well,” says Mr. Jones, who trained at Central Saint Martin’s in London and whose first fashion memories are of brands like Bodymap in the late ’80s.

Marc Jacobs is the overall creative director of Louis Vuitton and can be expected to take a joint bow with Mr. Jones at his debut show Thursday. But the Kim Jones spirit, and creative personality, are now part of the Vuitton team.

The Big Apple Tweed Ride x ron-n-ron

The Big Apple Tweed (BAT) Ride is a biking and social event that celebrates casual bicycling, fashion, culture and community. This fall ride was scheduled for Sunday November 21^st, and began promptly at 11:00 A.M. at the Grand Army Plaza entrance of Prospect Park, followed by a stop in Boerum Hill, and a wonderful brunch in Park Slope.

The Big Apple Tweed’s mission was to combine culture, style and landscape to create a unique and memorable social experience that pays homage to a timeless era. Riders don beautiful vintage bikes while clad in elegant Old English cycling attire, specifically tweed or vintage wear, and sally forth like posh Britons through a defined route, recreating a cycling culture of the 1700’s that is both historic and nostalgic. Similar rides have taken place in Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Washington, DC and of course, London – just to name a few. Founded in 2009, the Big Apple Tweed ride is New York City's only tweed ride, and we are excited to bring the second event to the colorful and diverse community of Brooklyn.

Vladimir Calixte is best known for his YouTube character Haitian V - a hilarious middle aged Haitian residing in Brooklyn, NY.

The first time I watched a Haitian V episode was for his Two Girls One Cup Reaction. SO FUNNY! I still laugh every time I watch it.

A few years ago, a friend, DJ Mo Chedda, asked Calixte, who does several Caribbean accents flawlessly, if he could create a character to appear on a trio of videos Chedda wanted to put on YouTube.

"He [Haitian V] didn't even have a name," Calixte said. "We were walking down the street and I said [switching into Haitian V], 'You know, I don't play soccer, I don't play basketball. Dat's not a human sport. A human sport is football. You people call dat soccer, but dat's football, 'cause you take your foot and you're kicking de ball.

"He said, 'Yeah, yeah, that's it!' We went in, and I borrowed a blazer and I had this hat, my late grandfather's [Adolph Charles] hat - which Haitian V still wears - and did the three skits."

Mo Chedda came up with the name Haitian V.

The skit featuring Haitian V took off. Online fans were begging for more, but Calixte wanted to do other projects.

We love the talented actor's work, and we are eager to see his contributions to the world of film and entertainment as he undertakes new projects and possibly new roles. Currently the artist is preparing a comedic mixtape, college shows and other venues.
