Ara Cristine Pascual Reyes (born February 5, 1989 in Marikina City, Metro Manila, Philippines) known as Cristine Reyes, is a Filipina actress. She has starred the reality TV show Starstruck. On 2008, Reyes transferred to ABS-CBN. She is best known on television shows such as Banana Split, Kahit Isang Saglit and Eva Fonda.

Reyes is the sister of actress Ara Mina and an ex-girlfriend to Diego Herrera (artist of GMA-7), who transferred to ABS-CBN.

Reyes has since taken part in different ABS-CBN shows, including Kahit Isang Saglit and the eponymous title role in Eva Fonda.

10. Terrell Brandon – 5’11”

After attending the University of Oregon, Terrell Brandon was picked 11th total in the 1991 NBA Draft. The Cleveland Cavaliers drafted him onto their team and he played for six years as a point guard. He was picked to play in the NBA All-Star Game in both 1996 and 1997 and was called “The Best Point Guard in the NBA” in Sports Illustrated in 1997. The same year Brandon was given the NBA Sportsmanship Award. After playing on the Cavaliers, he decided to leave and play for the Milwaukee Bucks and was then traded to play for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Sadly, Brandon became highly susceptible to injuries and in 2002 he was placed on the injured list and never returned to playing on the court.

9. Damon “Mighty Mouse” Stoudamire – 5’10”

Damon Stoudamire was first brought into the NBA scene by the Toronto Raptors. After being picked 7th overall in the 1995 NBA Draft, he was able to set his feet on the court and start his career. In 1995 and 1996, he was awarded the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, scoring an average 19 points per game, and has since allowed his career to flourish. In February 1998, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers and his stats didn’t stay as high as they were with the Grizzlies, and he was sadly usually benched during the 2001-2002 season. However, he was able to play a lot in the playoffs. Eventually his career took off again and he scored a franchise record of 54 points against the Hornets. After being traded again he went back to play for the Grizzlies in 2005 but tore his patellar tendon and had to miss the season. He was again traded off and settled a deal with the San Antonio Spurs in 2008. Today, Stoudamire is part of the coaching team for the Memphis Grizzlies.

8. Avery “Little General” Johnson – 5’10”

Johnson, after graduating in 1988, wasn’t picked to go into the NBA Draft. After playing for the USBL Palm Beach Stingrays, Johnson was signed by the Seattle SuperSonics and played a total of 16 years within the NBA. He also played for teams including the Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors, and the Dallas Mavericks. He is most popularly known for his seasons with the San Antonio Spurs. He is best known for his help in winning the 1999 NBA Championship against the New York Knicks after scoring a last shot in Game 5. The Spurs eventually retired Johnson’s number in 2007 and was most recently inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame on February 20, 2009. Besides being an NBA player, Johnson also coached the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA finals and now is basketball analyst for ESPN.

7. Michael Adams – 5’10”

Michael Adams started his basketball career at Boston College and after a successful college career was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in the 3rd round of the 1985 NBA Draft. As a rookie he only scored about 2.2 a game but once he became part of the Denver Nuggets team his career became more successful. In 1990-1991, he averaged 26.5 points and 10.5 assists per game. After this season he went back to play for the Bullets and played his first NBA All-Star Game in 1992. He then became known for his “push shot” and played a few more seasons. In 1996, while playing for the Charlotte Hornets, he retired, ending a career with 9,621 points and 4,209 assists total.

6. Calvin Murphy – 5’9”

Calvin Murphy was a guard for the Houston Rockets during 1970-1983. At 5’9”, he has been able to accomplish plenty, despite his height. In totally he played 1,022 games and scored 17,949 points throughout his entire career. In 1971 he was part of the NBA All-Rookie Team, and in 1979 he was on the NBA All-Star Team. Through 1980-1981, he held the record for the second highest free throw percentage in a season. In 1980 he was also known for having the most NBA consecutive free throws made. In 1993 he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Today, Murphy is actively involved with the Houston Rockets team.

5. Nate Robinson – 5’9″

Nate Robinson plays for the New York Knicks. After having a very successful college career by leading the Washington Huskies to two NCAA basketball tournament appearances, he was the 21st pick in the 2005 NBA Draft. The Phoenix Suns picked him up but he was soon after traded to the New York Knicks. During the 2006 All-Star Weekend, Robinson won the Sprite Rising Stars Slam Dunk Contest. His best dunk was when he jumped over Spud Webb and got the perfect score of 50. Nate topped that performance at the 2009 Dunk Contest by leaping over the 2008 Dunk Contest winner, Dwight Howard (6’11″).

4. Wataru “Kilo Wat” Misaka – 5’7”

Wataru Misaka is one of the very few well known Asian NBA players. Though he is now retired, he is well known as the first Asian player as well as the first non-Caucasian player to be part of the NBA, which was at the time known as the Basketball Association of America. He was born in Utah and played basketball at the University of Utah where he was able to help take his team to the 1944 NCAA and the 1947 NIT championships. Even at just 5’7”, he was a valuable player and was the first round pick by the New York Knicks. Wataru had a very short career (1947-1948), and he was able to play only three games before being cut from the team. In 1999 he was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame.

3. Anthony “Spud” Webb – 5’7″

Anthony Webb stands as the third shortest player to be part of the NBA. After attending Midland College and North Carolina State University, he was the 4th round draft pick by the Detroit Pistons in the 1985 Draft. In 1986, Webb entered the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, and despite being the shortest, had the highest jump of 42 inches and went on to win the contest. He spent most of his time with the Atlanta Hawks, playing six seasons with the team. Statistically, Webb had his best seasons with the Sacramento Kings where he was a starter from 1992-1995. In 1998, Webb retired from basketball after playing just one season with the Orlando Magic. He played 814 games total and scored 8072 points throughout his entire career.

2. Earl Boykins– 5’5”

Standing only 5’5”, Earl Boykins is the second smallest player to ever be in the NBA. Though second smallest, he stands as the lightest player ever, weighing in at only 133lbs. Even though he was never officially drafted by a team, he often signed short-term contracts with teams to play as the point guard. He spent most of his career with the Denver Nuggets. He is well known for his scoring techniques after he was able to score 32 points in a game on November 11, 2004. He also played for the L.A. Clippers, Golden State Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, Charlotte Bobcats, and many others. Today, Boykins plays for the Washington Wizards.

While the all-new for 2010 Toyota Prius wins plenty of praise, Toyota's recent recalls have raised questions about the brand's quality.

Toyota Prius: Review

The last generation of the Toyota Prius proved that a fuel-efficient hybrid car can be a viable alternative to an ordinary midsize sedan for many buyers. For 2010, it’s been redesigned completely -- and the automotive press unanimously agrees that the change is positive. “It's a huge improvement over the outgoing model,” says Cars.com. “Not only is the interior vastly improved, the car gets even better mileage: It's now rated at 51/48 mpg city/highway, 50 mpg combined.” Great fuel economy usually means poor performance or tight spaces, but the fuel economy boost in the Prius hasn’t come with a penalty. A more spacious cabin and increased cargo capacity make it easier to live with, while added power makes it easier to drive.

Still, the Prius faces stiff competition. Shoppers looking for a hybrid that can replace a family sedan have more options this year than ever before. The 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid recently won the 2010 North American Car of the Year award for its refined ride, upscale interior and 41/36 mpg rating. The Fusion Hybrid is expensive by Affordable Midsize Car standards, but priced fairly close to a well-equipped Prius. On the other end of the price scale, the all-new Honda Insight hybrid challenges the least expensive Prius trims on value. The Insight’s 40/43 mpg rating doesn’t quite match up to the efficiency of the Prius, but its bargain price makes it the least-expensive hybrid car in America.

Still, reviewers say that buyers looking for a high-mpg, low-maintenance car might not find a better fit than the Prius. It features more power than previous generations of the car, making the driving experience relatively similar to that of a non-hybrid car. Its interior is built of high-quality materials, with solid craftsmanship. A high-tech theme, complete with an innovative “touch tracer display” designed to allow the driver to adjust climate and entertainment functions without taking their eyes off the road, gives it a unique personality. "What's most surprising about the Prius is what a fine midsize car it would be even if it didn't get such terrific fuel economy,” Consumer Guide says.

Of course, there are some complaints. Visibility issues remain, and though its cargo space is competitive with the rest of the Affordable Midsize Car class on paper, it’s not the same as a conventional car in practice. But overall, reviewers say the redesigned Prius offers the experience of owning a well-built family car, with lower fuel costs and a smaller carbon footprint than anything else in it class.

Toyota Prius: The Details

The 2010 Prius is larger, inside and out, than the car it replaces. Its gasoline and electric motors are more powerful than before, offering acceleration that now rivals a conventional four-cylinder sedan. Yet its battery pack is smaller, allowing for a class-competitive 15.7 cubic feet of cargo space. The car now offers three operating modes, allowing drivers to choose whether to focus on fuel economy or performance. There are even roof-mounted solar panels available for an added cost, though they only serve to power a ventilation fan that cools the car when parked.

The Prius is available in four trim levels, offering varying equipment levels, known as Prius II, III, IV and V. Toyota has told the press that a bargain edition, the Prius I, will appear later in the year to take on the Honda Insight’s low price, but has not given a date for that model’s arrival. With a fully equipped Prius V costing over $32,000, it is possible to configure a Prius for many different budgets.

A report at ESPN Dallas quoting Top Rank's Carl Moretti says that last night against Manny Pacquiao, the badly thrashed Antonio Margarito suffered a broken orbital bone, which will come as no surprise to those who saw the fight or are just seeing the photos from today.

There has been some discussion today that Margarito should have been pulled out of the fight by his corner or referee Laurence Cole, but Margarito, as you might expect, says he's glad he got to finish the fight. Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach, however, fears that Margarito's remaining career has been impacted:

"He's a very tough guy," Roach said of Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs). "I was surprised how tough he was. He has the worst corner. They probably ruined his career by not stopping the fight."

I think Freddie might well be right that this has stunted whatever remained of Margarito's career, but as nasty a beating as this was, we've seen worse, and it shouldn't be surprising that Margarito wanted to finish the fight. At 32, he was fighting to put himself back at the top of the food chain. Realistically, someone with Margarito's skill set (or lack thereof, if you prefer) doesn't have a long time left as a big player. And I thought Margarito, warts and all, did show plenty of guts and plenty of resolve and a lot of determination. He wasn't good enough, but he never, ever stopped trying to knock Pacquiao out.

Margarito's own comments on it were brief:

"There was no way I was gong to quit. I'm a Mexican, we fight until the end," Margarito said.

I'm still no fan of Antonio Margarito, and I'm sure many feel the same way. But he left it in the ring last night. That much I can say.

Margarito Fracture "Orbit Bone"

Antonio Margarito, the Mexican super welterweight beaten badly by Manny Pacquiao on Saturday night, suffered a fractured orbital bone and was to have surgery Tuesday in Texas, Top Rank promotor Bob Arum told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Margarito, who lost in a lopsided, 12-round decision, was taken directly to the hospital via ambulance after the fight to have cuts to his face examined.

That is when the injury to his eye socket was discovered, and he remained in the hospital Sunday, Arum said.

Margarito had skipped the postfight news conference at the request of the fight doctor and people in his camp, an unusual move for such a big fight.

Legendary Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach was critical of the late-round decision-making of Margarito's corner, saying they should have forced a stoppage.

"There was no way I was going to quit. I'm a Mexican, we fight until the end," Margarito said.

Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KOs), giving away both pounds and inches, won the 150-pound, WBC super welterweight belt to extend his record with a title in an eighth weight class -- two more than Oscar De La Hoya.

"He's a very tough guy," Roach said of Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs). "I was surprised how tough he was. He has the worst corner. They probably ruined his career by not stopping the fight."

Pacquiao turned Margarito into a bloody and nearly blind fighter with a dizzying array of punches, dominating from the opening rounds on at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The beating was so thorough that the congressman from the Philippines turned to referee Laurence Cole several times in the 11th round, imploring him to stop the fight.

"I told the referee, 'Look at his eyes, look at his cuts,'" Pacquiao said. "I did not want to damage him permanently. That's not what boxing is about."

It went on, though, even though Margarito had no chance to win.

"I can't believe that I beat someone this big and this strong," Pacquiao said. "It's hard. I really do my best to win the fight."

Pacquiao moved up in weight yet again to take on Margarito, a natural welterweight with a reputation for ruggedness in the ring.

And rugged he was, though he took a beating all night long at the hands of a faster and seemingly more powerful opponent.

Pacquiao won every round on one scorecard, 120-108, and was ahead 119-109 and 118-110 on the other two. The Associated Press had it a 120-108 shutout.

All out war!!! Aizen Vs Shinigami

Kira and Iba remark on how high the captains and Visored reiatsu are, and they wonder if Momo and Rangiku will be all right from being around such a huge amount of reiatsu. Kira then wonders if the captains and Visored strength will be enough to defeat Aizen. Hitsugaya asks Aizen if right now he's thinking that because he has so much hatred against him, if he thinks Hitsugaya isn't worthy of being a captain. Hitsugaya tells him that he'd be correct in thinking that, but he doesn't care because he's willing to lose his captains position in order to kill him. Hitsugaya then tells Aizen that he won't give him a single chance to use Kyōka Suigetsu, and that it would be best if he prepares himself, but that even if he doesn't he won't show him any mercy. Hitsugaya then charges towards Aizen and as he does this Gin watches from the distance and remarks that none of them have any idea of Aizen's true strength.

Hitsugaya uses Hyōryū Senbi and swings his Zanpakutō in a linear direction at Aizen which creates overflowing ice from his blade in the form of a crescent. Aizen dodges the attack by jumping into the air but Hitsugaya uses Zekku to redirect his technique into the air. Before Aizen can react to this, Komamura and Love both release their Zanpakutō, Tenken and Tengumaru respectively, and smash Aizen with them at the same time. Komamura and Love tell Hitsugaya that they're joining the battle as well and Hitsugaya tells him that he doesn't care as he never intended to keep this fight one-on-one anyway. Aizen suddenly appears from the attack unscathed and he warns his opponents that they better put all of their techniques together, or else they'll never be able to defeat him. Rose suddenly swings Kinshara and is able to wrap it around Aizen's Zanpakutō. Lisa suddenly swings her Zanpakutō towards Aizen but Aizen is still able to block the attack with his own Zanpakutō.

Love goes to swing his Zanpakutō down on Aizen but Aizen is able to push him away. Komamura suddenly swings his own Zanpakutō down on Aizen but this time Aizen destroys the blade. Aizen tells Komamura that he's naïve in thinking he could win by striking with power. Aizen wonders if their basic idea of the word "power" is simply different and he goes up to Komamura, deciding to teach him what "power" really is. Komamura releases his Bankai, Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō, but Aizen easily severs its blade and left arm at the middle of the forearm and cutting the side of its torso, causing similar damage to Komamura, who screams in pain. Despite this, Komamura makes one final attack with his broken blade, but is blocked by Aizen, who gives him a decisive blow to the chest which sends him hurtling down to the town below.

Rose swings Kinshara again, but Aizen easily catches it and pulls Rose down, and he cuts Rose down which causes a stream of blood to be launched into the air. As this is happening Gin continues to think to himself and remarks that Kyōka Suigetsu isn't what makes Aizen scary. He admits that while it is a scary ability, there would still be people who would rather die than follow him if that was all he had. Gin remarks that the only reason he was able to gather all of the Espada into a single group despite them all having different agendas, is because he's strong. Gin goes on to remark that no matter how much they prepare against Aizen, his abilities will still be far beyond theirs. Aizen takes Rose's Kinshara and wraps it around Love, pulling him closer and slashing him as well.

Lisa, with her Hollow mask now on, attacks Aizen from behind with her released Zanpakutō, Haguro Tonbo, but he evades the attack and breaks her Zanpakutō. He notices that she is wearing her Hollow mask and states that he already told them that they are nothing but pseudo-Arrancar and cuts her down her as well. Aizen then asks her that if he can have Arrancar obeying him, how could "pseudo-Arrancar" expect to stand against him. As this happens, Ichigo watches in shock as so many captains and Visored all fall defeated from Aizen. All of a sudden Suì-Fēng appears in front of Aizen, which causes Aizen to ask her if she has gone insane since he never imagined that the Secret Mobile Corps, much less its supreme commander, would attack him head on. Aizen recites what all Shinigami learn in the academy, which is not to seek beauty in battle, not to seek out virtue in death, not to think of your life as your own, and to cut down your foes from behind to protect what must be protected.

Suì-Fēng simply finds it amusing that a traitor would recite Shinigami lessons to her, but Aizen states that he once taught those lessons before. Suì-Fēng tells him that it was so because the Central 46 allowed him to do so and that's why they had the rug pulled out from under them by a traitor. Aizen tells her not to speak ill of the dead and points out that she had the rug pulled from under her too. However, Suì-Fēng states that this isn't the case for her and she creates many clones. Aizen praises her on how well the clones are made and Suì-Fēng states that it's an honor to receive some praise from him, so she decides that she is going to finish him off with this technique. The clones of her then charge towards Aizen.

Aizen goes to unsheathe his Zanpakutō but as he does this his arm is encased in ice. Suì-Fēng then appears in front of Aizen and uses Nigeki Kessatsu and hits Aizen in the chest. However, it doesn't work and Aizen tells her that his immense reiatsu will cancel out her technique. Aizen is then surprised as he is attacked from the back by a shadow. Shunsui reveals himself having used his Kageoni technique, stating Aizen was careless by not taking into consideration that there was a shadow on the ice. As Aizen curses the 8th division captain under his breath, Hitsugaya tells Aizen it's over. Aizen glances at him as Hitsugaya rushes at him, noting to himself that because Hitsugaya is so young, he attacks at the first opening without planning ahead, calling it his biggest failing. Just then, he notices Shinji standing to the side, holding up his Sakanade and smiling.

Aizen realizes too late that he has entered the inverted world and that Hitsugaya is not attacking from the front, but the back as he is stabbed through the chest from behind, with an expression of surprise on his face. Aizen feels the blade that has stabbed him and tries to pull it out, but eventually gives up while cursing Hitsugaya. Kira shouts out that the captains have finally done it. Iba tells Kira that he should look happier and not have the same gloomy look on his face, and Kira tells him he's right. Momo suddenly gets up and begins walking away. Iba and Kira ask her where she's going but Momo doesn't answer. Shinji looks over at Gin and tells him that it looks like things are finally turning around. All of a sudden, Ichigo yells at everyone and asks them what they’re doing.

The "defeated" Aizen is revealed to actually be Momo and everyone looks on in shock. Shinji looks over to where Momo was at, only to see Kira and Iba being cut down by Aizen. Shinji asks Aizen how long he has been using Kyōka Suigetsu. Aizen simply answers with an explanation of his Zanpakutō's ability. Shinji angrily asks his question again. In reply, Aizen asks him how long he has thought that he hadn't been using it. Momo simply asks Hitsugaya "why", which causes Hitsugaya to attack Aizen in a blind rage. The other captain-level fighters try to stop him but it's too late as Aizen points out that they're all full of openings, and cuts down Hitsugaya, Suì-Fēng, Shunsui, and Shinji.

My Soul to Take coming this october

I once heard a quote regarding the Star Wars prequels. I don’t remember who said it, but they said that “… Star Wars is a lot like pizza; even when it’s bad, it’s still pizza.” The same can be said for My Soul To Take. Just substitute “Star Wars” with “Wes Craven’s movies”. I have mixed emotions on this one, honestly. But more on that in a minute. For now, the plot.

Sixteen years ago, the Riverton Ripper was caught and shot, supposedly dying on his way to the hospital in a fiery accident. At the same time, seven babies were born, all premature. Fast forward to today, where the “Riverton 7″ as they are called, celebrate “Ripper Day”, an urban legend ritual where one of the seven children defeats a dummy dressed as The Ripper in order to put off their inevitable doom. This year, it seems that they will have to fight more than a mannequin as they are picked off one by one. Did The Ripper come out of hiding to show the kids he isn’t a joke, or has his soul possessed one of the seven born on the night of his death?

Before I get into my acutal thoughts on the film, I just want to say that I think Wes Craven was pressured by the studio to make this movie 3D. There are maybe two shots in the whole movie that work as 3D, one of them is the closing credits. I wish I was joking.

Having said that, this movie was ok. Just ok. Craven had some great ideas here, he just had too many at once. A lot of cool imagery, symbolism and sound effects were no match for a poorly written script. My main problem with the movie is that the cast was very cliche and Craven should have known better. We have two nerdy outcasts, an Asian guy, an African-American guy, a jock douchebag, two popular hot girls (who happen to be bitches) and the Soothsayer (aka, the “something bad will happen” character). Not even the main characters out of the Riverton 7 are likeable, and you really need that in a horror movie.

We don’t really get any scares until almost the half way mark. Until then, this movie plays out like Mean Girls. The minor plot point of a school bully mafia that is making money on everything from beating the crap out of kids to selling cheat sheets really has no bearing on the movie and should have been thrown out. Add into that the jock douchebag knocking up the principal’s daughter and you’ve got an episode of Secret Life of the American Teenager.

I really wish they had done more with the character of Penelope. Her being the only born-again Christian of the Riverton 7 seemed like it should have been explored a little deeper than it did. They could’ve also made her a great red herring if she had stayed around a little longer. Instead they made her look like a creepy religious zealot a la Carrie White’s mother.

The lead character of Adam (or “Bug” as he’s called during the movie) had too much going on for his own good. He’s hearing voices, impersonating other characters and freaking out at a moments notice makes him look so obvious as the villian that you see right away that he’s not.

That is only scratching the surface of the transparent nature of the cast. As far as minor characters go, the adults in the cast really phone this one in. Especially Jessica Hecht, who plays May. Her tone of voice and inflection throughout the movie just misses the mark entirely.

On to more positive things. While the main actors don’t have much to work with, they really give it their all. These kids bring their “A” game to a movie that would’ve gone straight to DVD, save for the fact that it was written by one of the legends of the industry. However, this one doesn’t slip on the gore. We have lots of blood here which, though it doesn’t save the movie, gives you something to look at until the credits roll. I also liked how this one didn’t go for the obvious “jump” scares that so many movies go for to get the easy screams.

What this movie lacks in focus and originality, it makes up for in great casting and a few cool kills. But as I said earlier, if Wes Craven’s name wasn’t on this script, it would never have gotten off the ground.

I Spit on your Grave

It is now some nineteen hours since the world premiere of Steven Monroe's remake of notorious rape / revenge picture I Spit On Your Grave began to unspool and, in many ways, I am still processing the experience. There is a lot here to wrap your head around from the film itself, to events that unfolded during and after the screening, to serious philosophical questions about the portrayal of sexual violence, the motivation of those who seek these films out and the responsibilities inherent on film makers who choose to work in this territory. Those looking for a point by point breakdown of how Monroe's version compares to the Meir Zarchi original may as well go and look elsewhere as those issues have no interest for me at all and feel entirely inconsequential next to the larger issues at play.

For those unfamiliar with the premise, I Spit On Your Grave is one of the most notorious films in the history of exploitation cinema, a film that features a young woman gang raped in lengthy, excruciating detail twice before coming back to hunt down and kill the men who attacked her. Meir Zarchi's original version is a film that has been banned virtually everywhere at some time or another and while Monroe's remake - one made with Zarchi on board and heavily involved from start to finish as executive producer - polishes things up to a degree it follows the same basic structure and when it releases this October will go out unrated for a very good reason. This is grim, explicit stuff, and if they were going to cut it there would be no point in having made it in the first place because the violence, however you choose to spin its meaning, is the sole reason for this film existing.

That said, Monroe's I Spit On Your Grave is a film that seems to function on many different levels.

On one level it is a film driven by the need to shock and disturb. This is the film that led to one member of the audience collapsing in the stair well and gashing his face open, requiring treatment by paramedics, while it pushed another to hijack the Q&A session for an extended harangue of Monroe and company, a lengthy rant that ended only after building security made their way down the aisles and into plain view. Festival organizers waved them off but it's hard to imagine this particular outburst ending at all had they not been present.

On another level it is a film that seems to want to present a serious treatment of both the horrific impact of being raped and the motivations of those who carry out such a crime. Though I personally didn't find star Sarah Butler strong enough to really convey the emotion of the pivotal - and lengthy - rape sequence despite a very brave performance, the intention was clearly present to treat these characters as real people rather than just puppets being jerked around on a string. The opening half of the film is shot in as near to a verite style as they can manage with all of the characters given time to breath, the five male players all proving quite strong and surprisingly nuanced.

On yet another level this is a film that brings out the worst inclinations of a large percentage of its audience, more than a few debates breaking out after the film about whether this film or the original had a 'better' rape scene, 'better' being defined not by which was more emotionally effective or more harrowing but by which was lengthier and more detailed, the clear implication being that more rape is more entertainment. Those post-screening moments were noxious and nauseating, a clear demonstration that Monroe's depiction of the rapists in the film was not so far away from human nature as we might want to believe. And, frankly, it raises some uncomfortable questions about the use of rape and subjugation as a marketing tool to draw an audience out and the audience's reasons for seeking this sort of entertainment out in the first place.

On still another level it is a film that aims to entertain the post-Saw crowd with a series of intricate, detailed and extremely bloody kills. This is arguably the level the film works best on - the kills are spectacular, frankly - but it is also a level that works at obvious cross-purposes to the realism that the opening sequences worked to create, stripping out the humanity of its characters for the sake of a few thrills and cheapening the pain of its central character by making her less a victim trying to regain control of her life and more a prettier version of Jigsaw in a miniskirt.

Which raises the whole female empowerment argument for the film, an argument which - as a male - has frankly always struck me as total crap, nothing but a weak justification for the violence spread across the screen because, believe me, when a man watches this film he is not thinking, "Oh, look at the strong woman." That said, the female response to the film seemed remarkably distinct from the male response with several female friends - intelligent, articulate people, all - completely embracing it on that level. And who am I, really, to question what makes a woman feel empowered?

I don't know how to judge this film, honestly. I know I feel like it is flawed in some significant ways but I also know it will give at least a few different audience segments exactly what they want from it. I expect that it will be a modest hit, trading on the notoriety of the title, the extreme violence and Monroe's technical proficiency to create a strong cult following. But while I am certainly no prude when it comes to violence on screen - I have been a vocal supporter of films such as Martyrs, Irreversible and A Serbian Film, for example - I personally found the way the violence was employed in this film troubling on an ethical level and the audience response to it even moreso. Never connecting with the lead character meant that, for me, the rape sequence was reduced to being the rawest sort of exploitation, a detailed, lengthy and explicit sequence of degradation that exists only to set up the kill sequences later in the film. And, on a certain level, that makes it rape as entertainment. And that just doesn't sit well.
