Christmas In July, Anyone?!

Christmas brings special magic to most of us, it transports one to the land of whimsy and lights. It puts us in a state of spiritual solace that causes our giving hearts to explode. We turn our homes into a place of comfort, inviting, entertaining, and for the most part, joyous. I love Christmas season, not only that it is my birth month, but for the obvious reasons mentioned above--but Christmas in July?? I have a hard time putting myself in that mode when it is sweltering hot outside and teens walk around in their teeny weeny bikinis. I can understand how one might feel a December Christmas in the southern hemisphere. They, probably, more than most of us here in the north, would welcome celebrating it in July. I grew up in the Philippines. I did not have snow capped mountains and trees in December but it would be a tad cold in the Mindanao mountains where I was raised. Thick fog, that's what I had! And yes, it had me in a bustling "holidayish" mood...but sweaty July?? Nah!!
July is my night gardening time. When the sky is bright and the noon day has passed, I take my little shovel and do some weeding. In the evening, I would lie down on the cool grass and look up at the starlit sky.
Here in the north, there are some that celebrates Christmas in July. I know Hallmark TV does. Businesses, on the other hand, use it as marketing tool. I fall into that later category. So here I am, in the heat of the day, I have my air conditioning blasting throughout the whole house, my fireplace lit, and the mantle decked, photo shooting and sweaty. Please tell me I did a good job or else I would be bawling!! No, after all, it's Christmas!!

Hi everyone! Here is the Christmas Wreath tutorial that I submitted in Somerset Holiday Magazine 2016. This is how it is written in the magazine:

Joyous Wreath Pillow

The wreath, a symbol that stands for eternity, is my favorite decoration, whether welcoming spring, summer, or fall. I have been creating wreaths from the time I was a little girl growing up in the Philippines. In my life, I have never bought a wreath from a store! I would string different materials from weed reeds, vines, or leftover fabric from my father's tailoring shop. It was my favorite way to decorate my playhouse, and it is still one of my favorite ways to decorate my family home.
I often draw patterns from real leaves or flowers and re-create them on a pillow design. My husband and I love taking drives in our farming neighborhood along with our two teenage girls. We traverse the rolling hills, nearby forests, and riverbanks in our minivan. We carry a basket , with my shearing scissors, for my collections of leaves, wild flowers, rocks, pinecones, acorns, or tree branches. Most of the time, my inspiration comes from these items and the surrounding scenery where they come from.
Russian olive trees (considered a weed in Idaho) grow abundantly in our countryside, and they became the inspiration for my wreath pillow. The beautiful sage and silvery-green leaves, with green berries and thorny branches, makes a very good wreath in real life if one is patient cutting those random thorns!

Supplies:

Basic sewing supplies Lining fabric: lightweight (optional)

Buttons Pillow

Chopstick/Pointed tool Fabric adhesive

Felt: sage green, 8" x 11" Pom-poms: red, (0.28"/7 mm)

Linen: basket-weaved/ Serger (optional)
white cotton/oatmeal

Technique:

Cut the felt into tiny rectangles varying from 1-2 inches. Cut leaves from the rectangles, leaving one end with a larger width than the other end. It takes approximately two hours to cut enough leaves for the whole wreath. I do not use a pattern, and I cut them in random sizes.
Cut out the pieces of the pillowcase from linen in the following measurements or to the fit of your pillow: 16 1/2" x 16 1/2"; 16 1/2" x 8 1/2"; 16 1/2" x 13".
Trace the desired wreath size with a pencil centered on the front pillow square. Start sewing leaves onto the front square in a circle pattern, one at a time, until the circle is covered. Arrange leaves any way you want.
Hand-sew red pom-poms in the centers of the leaf clusters and around the wreath. Line the back with a thin lining fabric if desired and secure the two fabrics together with pins.
To prepare the pillow-backing, serge or sew a narrow hem for button sides, and then fold 1 1/2 inches to both short fabrics, iron, and pin them together, making sure the top overlaps the bottom by 1 1/2 inches.
Sew the front and back fabrics together, on all sides, maintaining 1/2 inch seam allowance from the edge of the fabric. Finish by serging all edges. Turn the pillowcase right-side out through open flaps and push out the four corners with a chopstick or similarly pointed tool.
Lay the pillowcase on a flat surface. For a three-buttoned pillowcase, fold two equal parts and mark the middle with a pencil. From the pencil mark, measure 4 inches to the left and 4 inches to the right, and mark again. For two-buttoned pillowcase, divide the measurement of the pillowcase by three equal parts and then mark the two folded parts. Machine, or hand-stitch the buttonholes. Once your buttonholes are done, mark the underlying flap to sew buttons and insert a pillow into the case.

Tips:

I use a dinner plate to trace the circle, depending on the size of the pillow. I adjust the size of the plate accordingly, making sure that when I place the pillow inside, the wreath circle distribution falls in the center and not toward the sides of the pillow.

Dab a tiny amount of fabric glue onto the tip or side of each leaf, not in the middle where I usually sew leaf veins. Otherwise, the glue will make the sewing needle stick. Allow approximately five minutes for the adhesive to dry. The glue maintains the arrangement and saves time.

If you don't have a serger, use a zigzag stitch on the edges of the pillowcase to prevent it from fraying before sewing the wreath.

and this is what is written at the bottom of my DIY article:

2016-09-18T01:00:00.000-07:00

Fall starts next week!! My favorite season of the year! In my home, we are gearing up- pruning trees, shrubs, cleaning garden tools, harvesting vegetables, canning and juicing ! I love, love all things homey and this weather brings me to that spirit. Honestly, at times, I wish I were a pioneer woman! and I know what is in your mind- hard work! but, I love working. Work is something I am grateful for. Money earning, thank- you earning, smile and love earning work is what I am for. Because whatever you get out of working, there is always satisfaction and a sense of completion that nourishes both mind and body.

I am grateful to my Heavenly Father for blessing me with body that is able to do whatever my heart puts in my mind. Small and frail at time it becomes, I am grateful for the opportunities to use my hands and feet. Oh, now I am crying! I better stop. La,la Fall is coming! Out comes our flannel sheets, soft comfy wraps, plaids and don't forget the decor! Yes, you are exactly right, this will lead you to none else but my shop! My friends, I am not selling to you, so don't feel bad if you aren't the shopping kind. I just want to share to you what I am up to these days. I mean, truly, just browse.
Also, I will have two magazine features this Fall! Yes! I will share when it comes! See shop here: www.angieandlois.etsy.com

Fall, In Our Neck Of the Woods

2012-10-11T14:50:00.000-07:00

This is our first Fall in Idaho.

In Washington, I used to worry that the rain would knock the beautiful,

colorful leaves off my backyard trees, leaving them bald and empty for the cold and

wispy air.

I would hurriedly gather my favorite leaves before it gets wet,and hung them up

atop my kitchen window sill and from whence, I would say my silent prayer:

NO FALL RAIN, please dear Lord.

Here in Idaho, there is no rain.

but, I have no trees to wail my blithe.

I know, I can not have everything. At least, not this Fall.

Sweet Harvest

2012-09-01T22:18:00.000-07:00

"You pick produce" proliferate en a masse in this rich valley of haciendas large or small.

In this fine, sunny Saturday, we marched our excitement down the berry patch.

We busied ourselves, making freezer jams for the winter holidays. These sweet plump strawberries makes a
good jam. We also liked topping our cereals with these luscious fruit.

We are loving Idaho !!!

BIG Sky Montana

2012-08-29T23:02:00.000-07:00

and the Prairie Lass

I struggled to climb the hill, panting and sweating as I try to reach Mister's hand. He was walking fast, examining the plaques of information about the battle between Lakota and Cheyenne Indian Tribes and the United States 7th Cavalry led by Lt. George Custer.

The Battle of the Little Bighorn, as it is now famously known, is one of the fierce battles in American history. One of the sign said: Here, in the valley of the Little Bighorn River on June 25 and 26, 1876, more than 260 soldiers and attached personnel of the U.S 7th Cavalry met defeat and death at the hands of Lakota and Cheyenne.

Mister,as always have been, wanted to read all the multimedia offerings scattered around the hillside. I got tired.

Sitting on the bluffs, which might have been where the U.S. Cavalry ran for cover,I looked down the valley filled with green, lush vegetation, and imagined the quiet village of tepees, eyes big and small peering from tiny holes. Heartbeats drumming in unison, as they watched their husbands and sons fight for their land. My imagination cut off when a piece of grass flew right in front of my nose. The relentless, howling wind makes my hair sweep against my already sun burned skin. I wonder if I were a Cheyenne... I can see myself, on a robust horse, galloping down the valley floor with certain abandon for poise, beauty and fashion. Like an audacious woman Cheyenne.

( I took this picture of the horses at the Little Bighorn Hill

who refused to let our car pass for what seems like forever,

farting and yawning at us. Sweet.)

Did they have regard for things of beauty ? Did they have several moccasins and buckskin dresses for different occasions ? Did they worry of their skin brushing against the prairie grass? I wonder how they were like, as daughters, as mothers, their domesticity around the tepees.

If I were a Cheyenne and knew only the life I have, I will be no different from any woman of today, albeit lacking of things mechanical. I would enjoy visiting with the mamas and the papas, weaving colorful grass baskets by the meadow... and I will have the same sentiment- if my son's lifeless body comes riding on a saddle of a half-craze horse.

"It's time to go !", Mister rounding us and headed to the car.
I slowly got up and looked down from whence my bottom formed the flattened grass. I realize, I didn't mind sitting there after all. I am no different from a woman Cheyenne.

Ahh...The Sunsets Are Beautiful !!

2012-08-27T20:22:00.000-07:00

Oh, Idaho, what glorious sunsets thou art possess !?

yes, we are loving it here. I almost forgot what sunsets looked like. Ten years was long in Washington, but still full of beautiful memories. How can I miss the rain ??

Over The Mountains And Through The Woods...

2012-07-25T19:44:00.001-07:00

Over the mountains and through the woods, we drove our jam-packed- to- the- brim vehicle. Passing all loved scenery, passing places we stopped a few times in the past, to collect mosses from or certain fern to add to my terrarium. The evergreen hills and valleys seemed to read my mind, bidding goodbye. I felt my warm tears flowing down my cheeks.

I will always love Washington, my home for ten years.

Mister brought half of our belongings to Idaho a week earlier. Leaving our furniture and some stuff we can do without before our new home is ready. We filled a biggest storage unit, I did not realize we have so much accumulation.

We drove passed "our" old house. I imagined myself on the lawn, beaming happily to my playing girls- but somehow, I felt a detachment came over me and my forced imagination blurred away, replaced by the new dwellers faces. It is some stranger's house...

It was almost midnight when we reached our intended destination for the night and settled in for a snooze. We left early the following day, and arrived in Idaho at noon, the sun blazing hot. It was fierce, bright and intense. I have forgotten the noon day sun... and this is just the beginning.

Saying My Tender Goodbye To Willow Grove

2012-07-19T08:39:00.000-07:00

... ahh, Willow Grove where my hair would whip my face with the strength of thy wind,

... where we watched ships a sailing and wonder where thy waters take
a vessel.

... and played my summer afternoons and prayed not to end,

this day, while the sun is kissing my skin.

oh,Willow Grove, thou hast brought

smile to my face and in wondering awe,

where did thy beauty came ?

what did thy maker think whilst His hand formed thee ?
has He thought of me ? has He thought that one day I will
come this way and capture my heart in reverence?

Goodbye Willow Grove, we have seen thy splendor
four seasons in a row !

Note: Willow Grove is where we spent our lazy afternoons in Longview, Washington. We watched the ships go by. We picked our favorite rocks, played, barbequed and brought home interesting drift wood that adored my garden spots. We all loved Willow Grove !

We Sold Our House !!!

2012-05-14T23:17:00.000-07:00

I Don't know If I Will Laugh Or Cry.

My home for ten years.

Sweet, short, full and loved ten years.

I raised two girls. Angela now twelve and Amy, nine.
I raised a husband, my retiring husband- whose heart belongs to Idaho...
The beautiful, unknown ( to me) Idaho.

Would I flourish in the land with montains brown ?

Would I cherish the days of hot summer sun?

Will I find comfort,

Will I miss the ever-flowing water from above,
that keeps me fresh, day in and day out?

Would I miss the gray covered sky,
The misty fog that touched my cheek-

oh, you should know what it's like to walk in the clouds even at noon day

My home, my garden, I tended them all-

Would my lovely plants know ?

Would they miss me?

even the trees and daffodils will wonder, where those tiny fingers go.

I know they will wonder.

Would they ask their company, if those ten tiny fingers will find a way,

to stroke the wet, green arms that sway to and fro.

Ah, to remember that tiny pumpkin patch,

My backyard that turns yellow to match.

My fall harvest of wild blackberries, sweet, luscious berries.

My friends,

Would they come see me ?

Would I see their faces,

Would I hear their laughter ?
My tears are falling. I have sweet memories.

Tea Cup Pincushions

2012-01-30T06:09:00.000-08:00

I did it !!

I saw the tutorial at Pinterest and immediately, I drooled. It is very easy to make and quick.

All you need :

cloth

a teacup, Goodwill has tons for 99 cents

glue gun and glue sticks

scissors

protractor

foam or scraps of fabric

1. Measure and cut your fabric.

2. Sew a seam half inch from the edge of your fabric. Pull the fabric to close
slightly and stuff . I also filled the cup with a foam or you can also use
scrap fabric. This will support your tiny cushion.

3. Spread glue around inside cup, about 1/4 inch from the brim
and more around edge of cushion. Squeeze cushion
and push it in the cup, careful not to make cushion stick
on sides of cup until you have positioned it on your desired level.

now aren't these cuties lovely?

...and if you do not want those buttons to scatter, glue a matching saucer

at the bottom of your teacup. It makes a good perch for your little scissors, too.

Winged Backed Chair Redo

2012-01-26T13:44:00.000-08:00

My family and I went to Grants Pass,Oregon to visit my brother-in-law and his wife. I have fallen in-love with the place, the first time my husband took me there while living in Reno and if you really know me,

you know the reason why... yes, the lush mountains, plants and more plants, wild blackberries,

rolling hills, fog, vineyards and lullabies.

For a Nevadan, that place could be a heaven on earth.

anyway

Last summer, guess what I found in one of the town's garage sale ?

this : for $ 15.00

turned to this :

... then, I bought an ottoman for $ 27 at HomeGoods store and covered it with
the remaining fabric and I get my ooolala time by the fire, pajamas and all.

hmmnn, priceless.

note: See my other DIY page, "Bargain Redo", for a little "how-to". One thing, I did my piping by hand before nailing it. It was not hard, just use a curve needle. It makes it neat looking if not perfect. I don't make things perfect, but at least a little tinge of that P is well enough for me.

Patches

2012-01-22T18:23:00.000-08:00

A rainy day is a perfect time to sew these patches given to me by my friend.

She got it from a fabric store ( I know, where else ). Fabric samples of discontinued

designs. The fabric store would religiously call her every time they have a stack for her to pick up.

So, she has tons !!!

My little girl, enjoying the loot.

I sewed a twin size bed cover. Before I sew them together, I thought of donating it for charity- now

I feel like holding on to it -- it looked so beautiful atop my daughter's bed !! oh, me'

Bargain Redo/ Reupholstering a Chair

2012-01-16T22:58:00.000-08:00

Spring and summer is the best time to be on a bargain hunt. In our neck of the woods, it is the time when garage sale signs would mushroom everywhere beginning Friday of each week. Sellers would take it off Sunday and new round of signs come up again on Friday.

For bargain hunters like me, it is a sight to see and to look forward to.

I bought this chair at a garage sale a block away from my house. I paid 15 dollars for it. The owner said, she bought it from a garage sale and thought she would reupholster it but never got the chance to do it after her baby was born and another one came along and then another. Finally, she gained a muscle to put it up in her garage sale. She even gave me the fabric she bought for this chair. I took it, but I did not use it. I'm thinking, probably for my other project.

First, I took pictures, lots of pictures to remind myself how the chair looked like in its original form. Those pictures helped me make the necessary adjustments,

as I worked on installing the fabric and the nails.

To remove the nails, a straight Phillips screw driver works perfectly fine.

Make the repairs if any before sanding it.

Refinish the wood with your choice of varnish and shade.
I used red mahogany by Minwax,here: http://www.minwax.com/wood-products/stains-color-guide/
I used two coats.
Wait to dry for about 72 hours or until completely dry to touch.
Sand it again using the finest grade of sand paper or steel wool.
When dry, apply clear gloss. While waiting for it to dry, cut fabric.

To make a pattern for the cover,
I laid the fabric I took from the chair on the table and used that to make my pattern.

I even used some of the nails I took from the chair
including the decorative ones that were not severely damaged upon removal.

.. and whoola !! a beautiful addition.

Snow Daze

2012-01-16T18:07:00.000-08:00

My daughter ran to the kitchen when she found out that we were blanketed with snow, " Mom, it snowed, it snowed !! I told you, forecasters could hit it right sometimes !". She could not contain her excitement. She ran from one bedroom window to the next, checking the different view and angle of this wondrous white powder cover.
I was sipping my hot coco and marveled the beauty of my all white backyard, when two arms belonging to my sweet little pumpkin, all dressed-up for the weather, announced "I am going out there to play before it melts! Mama- please." she begged. " Put something inside your tummy first", I ordered. After all it was only 6 o'clock in the morning. Albeit, my daughter is not the only one enamored with snow, our local paper has a little article, "Probing the Enduring Mystery of Snowflakes".
Here are some snap shots I took of my little darlings :

I heart snow

Snow hearts me

sister sister hearts snow

We heart snow sledding !

weee !!!

magnificent day-break snow- I heart .

Hmmnn, even the smell.. so heart snow.

We all love snow !! a little spice, instead of forever rain.

American Girl

2011-07-30T00:43:00.000-07:00

My eyes wandered through well lit, crystal clear show windows and examined each tender and alluring faces- all graced with two white teeth underneath supple painted lips and sweet expression. The dolls have different hair color and style of clothing, depending on the era they represent.
My daughters browsed hurriedly from one window to the next, leaving Mister who was both amused and perplexed of the entire structure and pandemonium of female filled room. He was left to wander about the brightly pink and yellow corridors. The store cater birthday parties, doll saloon and cafe.
I finally caught-up with my daughters and they took my hand to show me their favorites.
Two weeks ago, day after day, they toiled under the sun in our rich green yard cluttered with yellow flowered dandelion that sprouted evenly in the west side of our lawn that lacked direct view of my ever roving eyes.
They dreamt of owning the collectibles for years passed and I had managed to brush it aside bemoaning of the staggering price and " don't want them to think that money grows on trees" kind of mother's disciplining attitude. I finally summoned them to our yellow clad yard and announced,"work for it! "-- for which they jumped with exhilaration and started their job right off the bat.
I secretly watched them from my bedroom window as they weeded and pulled long sprouting weeds, their flushed faces - made me cry. Countless time, I stopped myself to protect them from my stern precept.
" learn to work for in thy sweat you shall reap", was my mother's pronouncement. I would tell myself the same mantra over and over. The same discipline they would need in their lifetime, more than the follies of instant gratification.

American Girl dolls = $ 119 here: eachhttp://www.americangirl.com/shop/sale/savings-await?cm_mmc=paid_search-_-google-_-Brand+%7C+BeForever+%7C+Samantha__Clothing+%7C+Broad-_-samantha%20clothing__107046480493

smiles,hugs and thank-you-for buying,satisfaction and lessons learned = priceless !!

I even taught them to sew their doll's clothes. Another teaching moment.
