My house is a total zoo and I have at least a million things going on today, but I really really wanted to share a cake and not just the Costco deal today.  So, here’s my quick cake post… it’s another Circus Train Cake with Animals!

I say “another” because this cake falls into that Sweet Repeats category on Facebook…. it’s a cake I’ve done before and shared details about.  The biggest change to this cake from the original is the color scheme – and even that is not a huge change.    I just muted the colors a tiny bit so that they were more “primary” and not so bright!

I also used my smaller Play-Doh letter cutters since John Grady’s name was longer than the name on the first cake!

Everybody knows I’m not a photographer, but if you want to see some really amazing photos of this cake and the entire party (done at the Ag Museum), please go over and visit Rebecca Jex Photography.  And if you’re here in Mississippi and looking for a photographer – be sure to consider her!  Her pictures are amazing and I’m hoping one day I can take photos half as good as hers!!

This cake was all vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream filling.  It was covered and decorated with homemade marshmallow fondant.   Except the black and red… it was Satin Ice Black Vanilla fondant and Satin Ice Red Vanilla fondant.    You can see how to do the stars on wires here and how I make fondant number toppers here.

And that’s all I’ve got for you!  I’m off to wash dishes and fold laundry and do all that other stuff that falls under the title of homeschooling mommy to 6 busy, dirty kiddos ;)

Other than wedding cakes…  baby gender reveal cakes are probably one of the most exciting things I get to do!   I just absolutely love surprises… surprises for me, surprises for others… surprises for anything!!  So, today I’m sharing a “What Will They Bee?” Twins Gender Reveal Cake with Chevron and a Beehive.

Nikki had very specific ideas about her shower and she was involved in all the details of the cakes.   I love making a vision come to life!  The beehive cake design was based primarily on her invites which looked like this…

But I didn’t just do “the big” beehive cake…. I also got to do two rustic buttercream cakes  - one for each baby!

I couldn’t share these with you without sharing pics from the actual party.  I took these in the afternoon so all the details weren’t complete, but it was soooo gorgeous already!  PS – I had nothing to do with any of the decorations… just cakes and cake pops!

This is the table Nikki had set up to display the cakes.  Isn’t that just perfect?  OH….. the room had really tall ceilings!  Check out what was hanging above the table:

I wish I had the “decorating” bone in my body.  Yes, I can do cakes… but party decor like that?  Not a chance!

In addition to that table, there was also a table with cake pops and other desserts.   I love the cake pop tree they used as a display!

Nikki also had a really adorable candy table set up!   Everything was just precious!

Anyway… here are a few details of the big cake.  It was three layers of 10″ round cake.  For the beehive, I baked it in a Wonder Mold pan.

I used zig-zag cutters from CheapCookieCutters.com to do the chevron pattern.  For the swag, I cut out circles from gum paste (with a small round cookie cutter), then poked holes for the ribbons with a small round tip (maybe a #4?).  I let them dry for a couple of days,  then strung the ribbon through (very carefully – a few of them broke).

The letters were cut out with the FMM Tappit Block Letter cutters.

For the beehive, after baking the cake, I covered it in buttercream.  Then I rolled out long ropes of fondant and wrapped them around and around and around….

The reveal cakes were 8″ round cakes… both colored PINK!  I did the rustic buttercream on the outside to keep them simple but pretty!   I made sure to pile on lots of buttercream so  nobody could get a glimpse of the pink cake inside before they were cut!

The cakes were all white almond sour cream with vanilla almond buttercream (colored pink on the reveal cakes).   The cake pops were vanilla (on the blue and pink ones) and lemon for the yellow ones!

One more thing before I wrap this up… if you missed the announcement on Facebook, the beehive cake (and a couple of other sweets) were featured on Parents.com back in April!    I can’t tell you how excited I was!
