The beautiful colours of silk are due to the prism like structure of the silk fibers, which refracts light at different angles giving it an iridescent appearance.

This luxurious fabric dates back centuries, with the most well known silk made from the cocoon of the Mulberry silkworm. 

Whilst the desire for this fine fabric has grown so has manufacturing, and with more demand for this beautiful product it has meant manufacturers have looked for ways to gain as much fiber to meet these demands as well as make the most profit. This unfortunately has had a detrimental effect on animal welfare and the environment.

So how is conventional silk made?

The entire silkworms cocoon is unraveled to produce a continuous silky tread. This might seem fairly straightforward. However, conventional silk production methods normally boil the cocoon whilst the silkworm is still alive inside or the silkworm can even be pierced with a needle to kill it and stop it from hatching and breaking the fibers! Grim right? This is done to stop the silkworm from hatching from the cocoon naturally and damaging it, so that the entire cocoon can then be unraveled and thus producing a continuous thread.

This is another way!

Peace silk or ‘Ahimsa Silk’ meaning ‘do no harm’, also known as non violent silk or cruelty free silk is a method of extracting the silk from the cocoon but only after the silkworm has emerged from the cocoon as a silk moth. This process means that whilst we benefit from gaining the silk, the silkworm is left unaffected and the silk moth is left to hatch from the cocoon as nature intended. It can take two to three weeks for the miracle of metamorphosis to occur and when the silk moth hatches from the cocoon it breaks the fibre, these are then knotted back together using special techniques. This process takes a lot longer than conventional methods making peace silk more expensive than conventional silk, but a worthwhile and beautiful process.

Conventional silk production is still the most widely used method, but as consumers start supporting those that use Peace Silk or ‘Ahimsa Silk’, the industry will have to change.

We work primarily with exploited farmers and widows in Vietnam, providing new employment opportunities, training and fair wages. Our scarves are made using AZO free dyes to protect the environment from harmful chemicals and demonstrating that something beautiful can be created without harming our precious planet, people or wildlife.

When Rachel started Roseannah back in 2013, she had one big goal - to make a change. Over the past three years, she has spearheaded numerous campaigns aimed at fighting an awful and often overlooked problem - human trafficking.

Our most recent campaign called '#ImNotForSale', is a continuation of our battle to create awareness of the issues that survivors face, as well as coach and mentor those affected. Giving them the skills and training to leave the past behind, and move independently into a new life through work experience and employment opportunities.
 

When we look ahead to the future of Roseannah we know that we will continue to help many marginalised communities around the world, bringing stories of hope and lives transformed. Restoring dignity and confidence to the broken and vulnerable. Standing in the gap for those who do not have a voice, and continuing our fight against human trafficking and helping those effected by this horrendous crime.

Pink has managed to regain its status as a must have colour this season, with both bold pinks and pastel pinks featuring heavily in many collections. Whether you want to look gentle and feminine with a pastel dress or fierce and edgy in a bright waistcoat, pink is the colour that will achieve these goals. Adding quieter or contrasting colours such as white can help to stop the boldness from becoming overwhelming. Clutch bags help to stop your outfit from becoming too casual whilst the perfect pair of black heels adds that subtle sense of edgy rebellion.

If you're not the biggest fan of pink in the world, fear not for there is always an alternative to those bright, feminine colours. Blue is another colour that is often thrown into the autumn/winter category, when it so often creates a palette in any summer wardrobe. Pairing various shades of blue, with darker colours adds that subtle hint of rebellion against the warm weather, whilst creating a chic summery outfit - perfect for any summer occasion.

This season, the inspiration for blue is coming directly from the ocean. Natural ocean shades of blue, green and white all combine to create a beautiful natural palette, ideal for looking natural and summery this season. Pairing strong blues with a clean white base or adding a patterned jacket allows for you to seamlessly switch between urban socialite and professional business chic. 

When it comes to shoes and accessories they can either be the supporting part or the statement piece of your summer wardrobe. Pairing a strong blue maxi dress or blouse with mellow colours such as white and green allow for the summery tones to come through without being overshadowed by the strength of the blue. When it comes to the heels, stick with the softer, warmer colours such as light blue or soft green and of course if you need to add that extra dose of brightness or you need to calm down a bold outfit add a dash of white.  

If you're not feeling the bold colours, the tropical palettes and the call of the summer, well then, simply stick with the ever reliable white. Whilst white is typically seen as being the dull choice of colours, this year it has been given new life. Different cuts, patterns and fabrics mean that you can tie it together with muted colours such as beige and pale blue or wear a statement all white outfit. The juxtaposition between the warm, bold colours of summer with a calm neutral outfit means that you're always sure to stand out. 

When it comes to getting the neutral look, the key is to remember that less is always more. Pairing a bold white jacket with nude heels creates a quiet confidence, whilst gold jewellery adds swarve sophistication. The neutral look is easily interchangeable, with shoes easily being switched from heels to flats and a dress easily becoming well fitted trousers and a neutral blouse.

The key thing to remember is that when you're wearing white - every sip of coffee or glass of red wine is a potential hazard so be warned! 

Whilst most of us start reaching for the bold, crazy colours this spring/summer season there is an ever-growing popularity of warm, neutral colours such as coral and nude. I know most people would think the idea of not wearing warm, bold colours run off until autumn, but these palettes allow for just that subtle hint of summer. Dip your toe into the water with cool pinks, calm browns and as always - black.  

Pairing a pale pink blouse with a light brown, or beige coat provides an almost etherial sense of elegance and class, whilst also suggesting that you're ready for whatever the weather has to throw at you. Combining the two colours with either a smart pair of white trousers or a long skirt means that your wardrobe can shift seamlessly whatever the occasion. In terms of shoes, well this is the fun part - throw on a pair of heels to create that angle of power and business, or throw on a pair of flats to go shopping with friends. This season the neutral palette allows for an easy transition from day to night, or casual to professional.

When it comes to combining the shades of pale pink, nude or mauve it is always entirely dependent on the outfit in question. If its a night out then of course go with a pale pink dress, and a nude coloured clutch bag and black heels. However when it comes to dressing for somewhere such as the workplace it requires a lot more strategic planning. A pale pink blouse paired with a white midi skirt and black heels, provides a contemporary style, whilst a light mauve or similar shade of pale pink, ties the outfit together, to create a wonderful neutral style that stays fresh and modern. 

Whether you're avoiding the sun or you're just not someone who wants to cover themselves in bold patterns and colours- the baked earth trend will certainly be for you. With its focus on earth tones such as brown, red and orange, it allows for you to add a small splash of colour to your wardrobe, whilst maintaining a safe distance from all of those summery colours. Working earth colours into a work outfit or simply wearing a brown or red dress, allows for you to add these tones to your look and create a wardrobe that will surely mean that all sunglass-covered eyes are on you. 

Dressing with earth tones allows for flexibility when it comes to creating that key look. Pairing brown suede wedges with a nude coloured skirt creates a fun professional look, whilst pairing a patchwork skirt with brown over the knee boots creates a vintage twist. Earth tones can be used either by themselves or you can work them into your wardrobe to either jazz it up - or maybe calm down a few of those over the top colours that you have hidden at the back of your wardrobe. To make sure you don't end up looking like you've taken part in a mud-fight, add a few warmer colours that complement the tones such as white and pale blue - these allow you to make sure that you stand out, rather than simply resembling a tree. 

Whether you're in a tropical location or in you're back garden having a party its all about the warm, sunset colours this season - colours such as red, orange and yellow combine this season to make sure that you stand out this spring/summer season, combining different shades and mixing palettes means that this will be your most adventurous summer yet.

When it comes to creating the bold tropical patterns of summer, its all about choosing what pieces flatter you the most. For some, a bold orange maxi dress is the easy choice, it flatters their figure and suits them perfectly, for others it may be a case of finding which pieces flatter you and create a flawless summer style. If you're a fan of bold summer colours and want to experiment as much as possible try different combinations of colour, such as a muted orange blouse paired with bold red trousers and black heels, creating a fierce ensemble.

American Western

This classic American trend draws from a blend of the cowboy and the native american indian, two styles that when blended together create warm, bold tones perfect for beating those winter blues. Traditional tones of blue and olive complement one another, with the olive tones immersing you in the depths of autumn and the sky blue tones creating that glint of springtime. Natural shades again create that idea of being outdoors with patterned fabrics creating a bold and eye catching style. 

This clash between bold patterned prints and subtle tones allows for plenty of coordination, a patterned cape or jacket over a stone coloured buttoned-shirt creates the illusion of being outdoors all day whilst also helping you to keep warm in our arctic British winters. The classic combination of dark brown and light blue again create this illusion, with dark brown casual trousers and a crisp sky blue shirt creating a traditional western theme. Denim is a perfect staple for creating that rustic american look, whether it be a pair of dark blue jeans or a light denim shirt - both aid in creating that worn, hard-working look. 

If you're put off by the idea of going completely native then pair a neutral coloured jacket of black or brown with a bold shirt and patterned trousers - creating that subtle western style without the need to throw on too much denim, whilst also creating an elegant edge to it. Adding a pair of suede boots creates the illusion of working hard in the sun all day, creating the perfect western cowboy look. When it comes to accessories, smaller and subtle bags and belts help to keep any outfit from looking too over the top - bringing it back to a level of comfort and elegance (with a hint of the rebellious cowboy). 

Tough 90's

The rejuvenation of 90's fashion is one that we can all applaud, the era when grunge and urban fashion burst on to the scene and made us ditch the bold neon colours and embrace the dark urban tones that so many of us are thankful for. When it comes to embracing the 90's style its all about the casual, dressed down approach - effortless but at the same time clean and sharp. 

Embracing that sense of being relaxed and detached requires muted tones such as grey and brown - adding these colours creates that sense of being invisible and muted, whilst pairing them with colours such as black immediately create that bold sense of rebellion. The classic oversized jumper again adds to this idea of not being interested in how you look but at the same time pairing it with slim fit jeans creates a polished and tidy silhouette perfect for updating an otherwise tired and dated look. Creating that edgy sporty look means embracing the classic puffer jacket, a bane on any 1990's man it today allows for that sense of being edgy and sporty but also comfortable, especially when it is combined with a pair of skinny jeans and some bold trainers. 

Combining that idea of the clean-shaven sport lover with the rebellious rocker requires a mix of muted tones and simple knits. Mixing muted colours with more popular colours such as black means that whilst you can created that classic urban look, you can still maintain that modern smart/casual attitude. Stripe and Checked fabrics are particularly popular for adding that bold colour block that transforms the quiet gentleman into the loud urban rebel. Adding classic converse or some big black military boots ensures that you can seamlessly switch from preppy sportsman to grungy urbanite. The look plays on the sense of smart/casual so there is no need to worry about looking as if you need a shower and a haircut. 

Post-Retro

When the phrase 'the 70's are back' is uttered, there are two different emotions that come to mind; excitement or dread. Over the past few seasons the idea of vintage or throwback clothing has slowly developed to the point where it has fused with the modern colours and styles that we see everyday on the high street. Forget hairy chests and questionable accessories - its all about classic knits and tailored, chic styles. 

Embracing the classic trends of the yesteryears its all about adding that modern twist in order to make it fit in with popular styles. Using muted tones of dark brown and burgundy paired with bolder patterns allows for that dramatic flair, without going too over the top. Adding a warm coloured turtleneck to a fitted dark suit allows for a professional style whilst maintaining a sense of the casual businessmen. Throwing a bold patterned t-shirt or jumper together with a large neutral coat creates that vintage vibe, perfect for that awkward transition between the cold winter nights and the warmer spring evening. 

When it comes to adding a sense of luxury to an otherwise casual retro outfit, a smart leather bag always adds a sense of luxury to any wardrobe. A bold leather bag, either a satchel or holdall adds a sense of decadence to the outfit but it also allows for it to be dragged back into the 21st century. Adding a formal pair of suede or leather boots creates the illusion of being in a different era allowing for either a business-man like formality in the day or an evening in the local bar. Never forget however, when it comes to worrying about what to wear with that classic, bold print jumper - black is always the number one choice. 

The Military Throwback

This Autumn/Winter season, military is making a big comeback. Whilst it has previously been reserved for the grungy or rebellious among us, it has now shifted into the mainstream with the patterns and colours being featured in many mens fashion collections. Khaki, Olive and Grey are but a few of the staple colours that make the military theme perfect for those wishing to stand out and beat the winter blues. Adding darker, heavier colours to a light palette of blues and soft greys creates the perfect silhouette for the professional gentleman or the laid-back everyday man. 

Mixing warm,softer shades of blue and grey allow for a subtle suggestion of warmer and brighter times to come whilst the darker bolder colours allow for you to immerse yourself in the dark, autumnal landscape. Another trend seen at New York Fashion Week. This mega trend is inspired by historical fashion, with a gothic twist. Thin waists and flared skirts create a dramatic silhouette. Destiny Rescue is an internationally recognised charity dedicated to rescuing children from human trafficking and sexual exploitation. They have rescued hundreds of children enslaved around the world, and help keep hundreds more from entering the sex-trade through their various prevention programs. Destiny Rescue ensures justice for those that have been wronged and has raised awareness to untold numbers. 

Their mission is to help rescue the sexually exploited and enslaved, restore the abused, protect the vulnerable, empower the poor and be a voice for children that can’t speak up for themselves. We've broken down this seasons styles into three macro trends, which are full of vibrant colours, bold prints and luxurious fabric finishes.

Digital Fashion

This trend has sports running through its casual wear, with a playful update through bold and distorted patterns. From pixelated patterns, perforations and blurred graphics, to checks, stripes and cartoon spots, this trend is all about print to tell its story. This sporty look also sees a real glamour overhaul, with allover sequins and high shine finishes, great for summer parties. Perforated fabrics and sheer stripes bring a cheeky update to fitted dresses and basics. 

Some luxurious fabrics, subdued colours and soft focus bring a dreamy feel to occasion wear. Beautiful sheer over-layered dresses that are perfect for weddings, and transitioning from day to night. Knots and ruches around the waist bring figure flattering silhouettes and accessories and footwear are transformed with iridescent hues. 

The Tropics

The lush and green tropical foliage of the rainforest influences this trend, bringing a wild and exotic vibe. Botanical prints and vivid colours play their part, in bringing this celebration of nature alive. Bold but casual, these tropical prints give beach glamour and resort styling a vibrant kick. Carnival colours and bold patterns makeover the skinny jean and jersey dress, bringing a bold update to casual staples.

Exploring ideas of deconstruction, reconstruction and refinement, this trend brings both asymmetry and symmetry. Sculptural splicing and different tones reinvent knee length fitted dresses, for great day to night transition.

Can you imagine?

Many undergo physical violence, psychological torture, physical restraint in the form of locks and guards, drugging, and instilling fear through threats are just some of the ways that traffickers control their victims. 

If trafficked-women are rescued or manage to escape, it is often only the start of a long and difficult journey to freedom. Currently in the UK there is only provision for victims of human trafficking for 45 days following their release or rescue, after this time many are resettled into the community with minimal assistance. This can be an overwhelming period where many are left vulnerable, unable to cope on their own, many suffer serious depression, get into debt, some run away, and others resort to substance abuse or return to prostitution. The Snowdrop Project is the first and only initiative in the UK that seeks to address this gap, by providing extended support to victims of human trafficking and helping to build new lives that are no longer defined by the past.

These facts and figures can make us feel overwhelmed by the scale and horror of the problem, but there are many organisations helping to fight human trafficking on all levels. Hibernate - 

This trend brings an updated cosy heritage theme, using chunky yarns in pastels and brights in updated aztec pattern styles. Look out for big knits with chunky roll necks, tippets and tabards and cosy faux fur lined boots and beanie hats. For occasion wear this trend brings fabrics with an iridescent hue, sheer overlays and updated cut out detail.    

Theatrical Romantic - 

This macro trends encapsulated a modern fairytale theme, you will see high-necks that frame the face, with deep cuffs and bib fronts creating a theatrical style, this will also come through in jewellery such as chokers and elaborate designs that cling around the shoulders and neck. Another key detail within this trend is the cinched in waist, creating a very elegant silhouette. Also look out for ovoid sleeves, hood detail, pleated tapered trousers, symmetrical pattern placement and corset shoes.

Reinvent - 

Look out for a strong Military style coming through on items such as the Trench coat, bringing along a reworked camouflage look. You'll see items such as skirts and tops being reconstructed, using different angled panels of fabric and textures. Strong themes coming through on this Autumn Winter trend are Sports Glam and Old school styles with an emphasis on athletics, including slimline side stripes, panel blocking and Varsity appliqués designs.
