Africa Dreaming Bead Embroidered Collar.

Africa Dreaming was inspired by my visit back to South Africa last year. I have included many elements relating to Africa in this piece. A lovely young woman featured in a glass cabochon with her colourful head dress set into a copper frame is the centre piece with many elements to compliment the African theme. I have used animal print and leather for the background fabric. Other elements include porcupine quill tips, rhinestones, stone cabochons, metal animal print cabochons and a variety of beads. A lovely wooden drop bead hangs below.

Turtle Sea Collar

I was very fortunate to be a winner in the August Facet Design Challenge run by B&B Magazine with this piece. The title for the challenge was A Day At The Sea. Also winning first place and Standard of Excellence at the Royal Sydney Show.
I love working with these colours as can be seen by a previous collar called The Reef. The freeform bead embroidery gives one scope to be creative and use interesting components. The turtle charm is made of copper with a green patina. I think he is very happy in his new home in the waves!

Colorado Collar.

I love this collar. The colours and elements work so well. I have called it Colorado to remind me of my wonderful visit to that area a few years ago. I was privileged to spend two days with the awesome Heidi Kummli at her studio near Ward way up in the beautiful mountains.

Totem necklace.

I was very fortunate to spend two days with Heidi Kummli at her studio in the Rockies in Colorado. Not only is she an amazing Bead Artist and teacher but a wonderful person. I came away feeling both inspired and privileged to have spent time with her.
I asked to make a Totem piece on my first day and here it is. I just love it. The lioness representing strength and my upbringing in Africa. The best days of my life ! It's very light and easy to wear and a lovely reminder of Heidi whose work is my sole inspiration for taking up bead embroidery. Her total connection to nature is something I admire and aspire to.
Heidi here with Spirit. A wolf hybrid. Spirit often pops in for a visit. I was lucky to be there on this occasion. Such a beautiful animal.

This gorgeous decoration designed by Mikki Ferrugiaro is called a Doodad. A Doodad is whatever you want it to be for home decoration or a Xmas decoration. I just love them and have made a few for Xmas presents.

The Rainforest Collar.

This collar is called the Rainforest which won First and Standard of Excellence at the Royal Sydney Show in 2014. Being a nature lover I find the diversity of the Australian land and sea scapes truly beautiful and inspiring. This is a very complex piece and a challenge I enjoyed. It has various beading stitches incorporated into the bead embroidery.

The second in a series.This one inspired by the Great Barrier Reef. I was thrilled to win First in my category at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Plus the Standard of Excellence and Special Award over several categories. Worked with seed beads, silver charms, pearls and turquoise stones.

Masai

This is a collar worn by the Masai women mainly for ceremonial purposes. Their bead work is outstanding with vibrant colours and a great variety of designs which all have specific meanings.

Bhutan

Bhutanese prayer beads or Mala are said to have positive powers and many are made from Yak bone and wood.
There are 108 beads on a Mala which is a sacred number and simplistically this relates to the 12 astrological houses multiplied by the nine planets of the solar system.

Kakadu Australia

I bought the shell necklace from the Injalak Arts centre - an Aboriginal owned and run community organisation in Western Arnheim land in the Northern Territory. The artist's name is Mareiga lllakalik of the Kunwinjku culture. Their artwork is fascinating with great detail and strong colours reflecting the surrounding landscape.
