Brother-Commander Leverre stared into the cavern’s pitch-black maw, giving his eyes time to adjust in the hope of being able to make out something. However, the darkness was complete, and no amount of time would allow him a glimpse of what lay within. Darkness in such a remote, wild place was always unsettling, but he could do something about it.

He closed his useless eyes and held out his hand. Ignoring the shuffling and muttering of his subordinates, he focussed his mind entirely on his task. A tingle started on the skin of his hand

and spread over his entire body. Leverre smiled at the familiar and welcome sensation, then smiled even wider when he felt something else—a dense concentration of magical energy. The Fount, and far more intense than he had ever encountered before. It was just as the Prince Bishop had described. This had to be what he was looking for. When he opened his eyes, he could see the bare skin of his hand glow with an ethereal blue light for a moment. He wondered if the feeling of exhilaration he experienced every time he used magic would ever leave him. Considering how long he had been at it, he doubted it.

“I don’t know if we’ve found it,” he said, “but there’s definitely something here.” He could see the look of relief in the faces of his people. They had been searching the mountains for weeks, and it had taken its toll on them all. Their Order was still ostensibly a secret—while their existence was not concealed, their purpose and true nature were, on pain of death. That meant they couldn’t take advantage of the few comforts that could be found in these remote areas, instead having to stay away from any hint of civilisation and make their beds wherever they could find a dry, sheltered spot. The thought that their search might be over excited even him—not just the prospect of going home, but what success in his task would mean for his career.

He pointed his finger into the cavern, and focussed. A stone’s throw away, a glowing orb formed, casting light on rock that had likely never felt its touch before. He repeated the process a half-dozen times until all parts of the cavern in view were illuminated. He admired his handiwork and enjoyed the impressed sounds his people made. Creating a magical light was a simple enough thing, but to cast it at a distance, many times in a row, spoke to the skill of the caster, and none of the others were nearly powerful enough to achieve such a feat. Nonetheless, he could feel the strain it had placed on his body, and knew he needed a few moments to recuperate.

“Begin the search,” he said, concealing the fatigue that gripped him, so as to maintain his aura of power. He remained still as the dozen sergeants, corporals, brothers, and sisters made their way past him and into the cavern.

Duncan M. Hamilton is the Amazon best selling writer of fantasy novels and short stories, including The Wolf of the North and the Society of the Sword trilogy. He has Master’s Degrees in History and Law, and practised as a barrister before writing full time. Duncan is particularly interested in the Medieval and Renaissance periods, from which he draws inspiration for his stories.

how could i leave josh behind?

I think about it a lot, how it all happened, how we came to be here. It’s not like I have anything else to do in the dull ebb of this place. Even the days here feel like a technicality, as if they don’t actually mark time. As if they have no function, except to help keep up the illusion that this is a real town, and that we still count as real people now that we live inside it.

I don’t know why I’m so preoccupied with going over my memories, getting them exactly right. My story won’t save anyone else. No one else will ever know it. Or if they do, that will mean it’s too late for them too.

Because I have to assume that this is it for me, for life. More of the same nowhere, with everything that makes it seem like somewhere just an empty gesture. A fraud. Because even if I could find a way out, how could I leave Josh behind? He’d never agree to escape with me.

After all, he’s the one who chose this world for us.

SARAH PORTER is the author of the Lost Voices Trilogy (Lost Voices, Waking Storms, The Twice Lost) in addition to Vassa in the Night—all for the teen audience. Subsequently, he toured the United States playing ultra-challenging roles such as Ichabod Crane in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and the Shoemaker in The Shoemaker and the Elves to packed houses filled with literally thousands of screaming children. (He hopes they weren’t screaming in fear.)

Dan ended his promising acting career to focus on other endeavors. While exploring various artistic options, he held a number of jobs in New York City including: a floral groomer, an audience-wrangler for a popular game show, a computer analyst, a chemotherapy-unit assistant, and a traveling bathing suit sales-dude.

That’s right. A traveling bathing suit sales-dude.

Dan now writes full time. He's probably working on something new this very minute!

Where I Play with Fire

“Great Master, we have a problem.”

I nearly tripped over the army of small clay men in front of me as I walked into my townhouse. It was the shabti leader who spoke, Colonel Cody, finally back from whatever errand he’d been running. He stood there wringing his hands frantically. His golden face looked ashen. Or maybe that was my imagination. His face never really changed color, seeing as how it was painted on. Behind him stood twenty shabtis, also gold, but with green clothing. My special fighting unit. This couldn’t be good.

“What kind of problem do we have?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. I didn’t want to upset the little shabti. Since he’d returned from the underworld, he’d been trying extra hard to please me. I’d almost lost him during the whole Uncle Horemheb debacle. But thanks to Horus, I’d gotten him back. Sure, Horus had to travel to the underworld to retrieve Colonel Cody, but since Horus was a god, it wasn’t as epic as it seemed.

He steadied his hands in front of himself, like he was trying to stay calm. “There seems to be an issue in the basement. We believe your assistance might be required, Great Pharaoh.”

Oh the shabtis. How I loved them. After nearly a hundred years together, I always knew when they were holding out on me. They never flat out lied, but they did have an amazing ability to dance around the truth.

“The basement?” I almost never went down to the basement of my townhouse. If there was ever a problem with the plumbing or electrical work, the shabtis took care of it. They were way better at that kind of stuff than me, which made me sure this wasn’t some sort of loose wiring or something like that.

“The basement,” Colonel Cody said, nodding. Since he was the leader of my shabtis, he took charge of pretty much anything that went wrong.

“And you’re sure you need my help?” I asked. I needed to find Gil. I’d already mapped out the places I was going to search for the rest of the day.

“Absolutely certain,” Colonel Cody said. He eyes were wide and unblinking.

Whatever was going on in the basement, I wasn’t getting out of it. So I followed the army of shabtis down two flights of stairs.

Colonel Cody held a tiny torch that looked like it had been constructed from a Q-tip and a Band-Aid. It wasn’t doing much to light up the place, so I let a small amount of light escape from my scarab heart. Gil’s scarab heart. I was still trying to get used to it, and it didn’t feel right to call it my own.

“Open the door, Great Master,” Colonel Cody said. But right as he spoke, something slammed into the wooden door from the other side.

My gut reaction was to step back, but then my brain took over. I was not stepping back from whatever was behind this door. I was the great pharaoh Tutankhamun. I’d hunted jackals and ridden on the backs of rhinoceros. I was more than capable of facing whatever dust bunnies the shabtis might have uncovered. I opened the door.

The light from my scarab heart bounced off the thing in front of me, and instantly I regretted it. It was about the size of a polar bear. I knew this because I’d just seen one at the zoo. Except unlike a cute little polar bear face, the thing in front of me had the head of a lion with bright white fangs popping out on either side of its ginormous mouth. Drool spilled from its black lips and dripped onto the concrete floor of the basement. Its tail stood straight up behind it. Actually it wasn’t really a tail. It was a snake, which hissed as soon as it saw me.

The thing lifted its upper lip into a snarl, exposing two rows of terrifying teeth that could rip my arm off in one solid bite. Armless was not how I intended to spend the rest of my immortal life.

“What. Is. It?” I asked Colonel Cody, keeping my voice low so I wouldn’t upset the monster. But it didn’t work because that’s when the ears on the thing perked up; they were at least a foot tall. With those ears, it could probably hear a grain of sand fall in the Potomac River from ten miles away.

“It appears to be a monster,” Colonel Cody said. He stood bravely at my feet, and with a small wave of his arm, the twenty battle shabtis moved forward, forming four rows of five. And though my shabtis were fierce when it came to protecting me, I was pretty sure this thing could step on them with its huge lion paws and crush them.

“What kind of mon—” I started, but I didn’t have time to finish, because the thing let out a huge roar that made my bones vibrate. Globby drool spewed from its mouth and drenched me. And then it pounced.

What is the best piece of advice

you ever received from another author?

I love listening to other authors talk about their craft and process. Over the years I’ve picked up such great advice. Probably the best one for my current mood and situation is “Eyes on your own work.” This is excellent advice because sometimes we can get caught up in looking at what other people are writing and doing and compare ourselves. This pretty much always ends up negative and with doubts and thoughts like: How come I can’t write as fast? Why does she get to go on tours? Why isn’t my book selling like that? My work sucks. And it sends you into a downward spiral into jealousy and self loathing. The only thing you can control is your work. Focus on making it as excellent as possible. Put up those imaginary binders that they use sometimes in school to keep kids honest. Because all of that jealousy and negativity will only lead to being unproductive and will stunt your own creativity.

This book was definitely something different than what I normally read.
It was really funny and quite intriguing.
You don't get married, you get signed.
You don't divorce, you breach.
Contracts last for 7 years, and couples will either re-up their contract, or they breach it.
Kate recently finds herself jobless and single, and living with her parents.
In comes Adam Lucas, Contract Killer and Serial Hottie.
Kate goes out with her best friend Logek to try and forget about her ex partner Johnathan, and that's when she meets the mysterious Adam.
I didn't want this book to end and I'm already itching to find out what happens next in this series.
A great debut novel by Erin Lyon.
I would definitely recommend reading it!

Wow.... I was not expecting that at all!! This was such a bone chilling story. The twists kept coming. Just when I thought I knew what was happening, another twist was thrown into the mix.

I never fully knew what was going on, but I think that's what kept my attention.

I couldn't put this book down. I had to find out what was going on.

I'm pretty sure there were a couple of nights where it was all I dreamed about.

This story has stayed with me and makes me really want to read more from Gregg Olsen.

I definitely recommend reading this story!

Instead, I tend to play really intense or emotional music during the whole writing process. He gave a strained groan when her wrist brushed against his cock.

Her breath came in hot bursts; her breasts sliding up against his chest as she worked faster. He wanted her naked and spread before him. Under him. Her knees around his hips and her nails in his back. His arms struggled against the bonds. He couldn’t even feel her skin against his chest with his shirt on.

This was bullshit.

She worked his jeans down his hips, lowering them to the floor, then paused. The view of her on her knees was enough to make his vision dim at the edges.

He grit his teeth together as her gaze focused on his hard-on straining against his boxers. She leaned closer, the breath shuddering from her perfect mouth. He could feel the heat of it and bowed forward, fingertips gripping the lip of the stove behind him.

With her hands still fisted in his pants, her lips brushed against the thin fabric. Her eyes drifted closed. She kissed him again, a little higher, and a little higher, and he held still as a statue, because he’d never seen anything so hot in his entire life.

A tiny moan slipped from her lips and his eyes nearly rolled back in his head. The sound seemed to startle her though, and she pulled back. An instant later she’d ripped his pants down to his ankles, and pulled off his shoes. His keys, in his back pocket, spilled onto the tile floor.

And to his horror, she snatched them up, along with his jeans and cell phone, and stood. His arms gave a jerk, but though the metal oven door clanged open and shut, it didn’t set him free.

His gut sank. His traitor cock did not.

“Staying alive is the point,” she said. “I’m sorry. I’ll call Garrett to come get you as soon as I’m out of town.”

“Wait.” This was a joke. This had to be a joke. The way she’d just touched him was not a lie. The belt, like the rope in her loft, was just something she needed to get off, to feel comfortable. They’d played this game before.

His brain fought to catch up. This had been her plan the whole time. She was leaving him pantsless, chancing death the second she walked out that door.

He was losing her again.

Rage and fear combined into one hot ball in the center of his chest.

“Marsella,” he snapped. “This isn’t funny. He’ll kill you. You aren’t safe.”

She paused, one hand on the door.

“I’m never safe,” she whispered. And then she was gone.
