The World of Cross Stitching

Creativity comes in many ways. It may be singing, painting, dancing, writing and more. Some of you may say, “I have no talent”. I have said before that if we look closely at our lives, we all express our creativity in some manner. Cooking a delicious meal, planting a beautiful garden, knitting or sewing are some other ways.

Here’s another way to paint without a brush…..using needle and thread. I recently partnered with Gecko Rouge and started having my artwork made into cross stitch patterns and kits. Gecko Rouge prints the designs and then matches the threads very closely to the ones in the artwork. Many are enjoying seeing their creations on their walls and pillows, not to mention the therapeutic benefit that comes from the creative process.

I am proud to announce that Gecko Rouge has made it into one of the most popular magazines in cross-stitching “The World of Cross Stitching”. Out of their hundreds of patterns, my “Fantasy Fish” batik kit is part of the advertising. Thank you Gecko Rouge for this opportunity and for showing the world one of my pieces.

Farewell to Grovehouse Artists Gallery

Three years ago, I had a life-changing experience when I took a workshop with Debra Cortese, and a number of local artists, at the Windisch-Hunt Gallery in Coconut Grove. I did not know at the time that the workshop would give me the information I needed to get my art out of the closet and into the technical world. At the same time, I also made some life-long friends. Some of the artists there had been part of the Grovehouse Artists co-op and were waiting to re-open at the new location in Mayfair. With their encouragement, I joined the group. We were all so excited and enthusiastic at this new beginning for the gallery. The gallery offered art in all mediums, as well as glass, wood, mosaics and sculptures. What a wonderful experience!

Although I left the gallery over a year ago, it was still the place to visit on gallery walk night and catch up with old friends. It was also through my friendships there, that I have participated in other fun activities in the Grove, such as the monthly drum circle and the fabulous Mango Strut parade.

Sad to say, Grovehouse Artist Gallery will have its last opening reception on Saturday, February 3^rd. They will be closing their gallery space at the end of February and continuing on "without walls". What this means is that they will try and mount 3 to 4 exhibits a year in different venues. I wish these artists the best as they share their talents with the South Florida area.

Yes....Even on Metal!

I had a fellow artist ask me the other day if I still have art available on canvas or paper. He was speaking about the fact that my art has spread during 2011 to other functional pieces in and out of the home. It all starts on paper and canvas, but why should the life of that work end? Song writers, play writers, singers, actors and authors are able to have their work live on with additional publishing, royalties, radio play, etc. Visual artists receive this same compensation through art licensing. I believe that during these hard economic times someone would rather enjoy art in a functional manner, or made from different materials. Phone cases, IPad covers, cross-stitch patterns are also ways to have a beautiful piece of art on a functional piece.

Happy New Year 2012!

What better way to start this art blog in 2012 than by sharing my granddaughter Nola's art. She brought these to me when she visited during Christmas. She was so happy to share her work with me and I am just as proud and happy to share it with you. She is a true little artist and would paint all day, if allowed. How I wish I could be this loose with my strokes and use all of the colors in my palette. Thank you, Nola, for starting 2012 with a valuable lesson.

Move Forward.........Look Back!

By now, your holiday shopping and your holiday home decorating should be about complete. The menu should be in place and all that should be left to do is to be with the family, enjoying.

This is also a good time to look back at what has happened to you professionally and personally during 2011. If you are like me, you set some goals at the end of each year and try to achieve them. I have had many accomplishments that I would like to share with you, along with the blessings in my personal life.

The year 2011 started out this way:

In January, I participated in the Coconut Grove Peacock Tour. The unveiling became a huge celebration and the peacock, "Nassau Daddy", still stands proudly on the corner of Grand Avenue & Douglas Road in Coconut Grove. Continuing with the art in public places, a six foot (plus) mama manatee, and her baby, was delivered to my garage. This was part of the South Miami Manatee Festival. Click here to view “The Making of Willy the Manatee’. As of this writing, she is still standing on the corner of Sunset & 57^th Avenue in South Miami. This manatee was sponsored by Williamson Cadillac.

In June, my piece “Fresh Lobster” was part of the Miami Watercolor Society Member’s Exhibit at the Wirtz Gallery in South Miami.

In July, I signed up with Deny Designs and started providing my art on their very beautiful and functional products. It feels great to see my creations in household items.

In October, my painting “Dinner Key Marina” was part of the Miami Watercolor Society Signature Members and Award Winner’s Exhibit at the Hunter Gallery in Coconut Grove.

In November, my painting “Wild Thing” was part of the Miami Watercolor Society Fall Exhibit at the Hunter Gallery in Coconut Grove. I am proud to say that this painting won Second Outstanding at that show.

What a year of many firsts in my art world. In my personal life, I was blessed with a second grandchild, Aaron. He and, his sister, Nola light up my life. I am also grateful that my son, daughter-in-law and baby Aaron survived a very bad car accident and have recovered.

Northeast Georgia Arts Tour 2011

Last week we went to Georgia. The trip had been planned in advance, but I was disappointed that I would not be able to attend the Miami Watercolor Society 2011 Fall Exhibition opening reception and receive my award. To my surprise, I was just in time for the Northeast Georgia 2011 Arts Tour. What a treat! Four counties open their doors and make it possible for you to meet over 100 local artists--painters, potters, jewelry makers, fiber, glass, metal artists and more demonstrating art in the making. Our first stop was above the Dahlonega Welcome Center. As promised, there was not only art, but artists creating. At this location, I ran into Oscar Rayneri demonstrating watercolors.

We left the historic downtown center and traveled a few miles through the beautiful Georgia mountains to our next location, The Funky Chicken. We were greeted there by Christina White. She gave us a tour and demonstrated her wood carving. After some hot cider and homemade cake, we went to our next location, Moonrush Jewels. This working studio houses a husband and wife team, Paul and Florence, creating beautiful jewelry with stones. I had to buy a necklace.

As if this was not enough, we continued the tour and ended up at The Art Loft. At this location, artist Anita Elder and Dorothy Abercrombie had an art activity for all visitors. My husband and I were given a piece of a large photograph, canvas and paint. We painted and all visitor's art will be compiled to create the entire painting. All participants will be emailed a photo of the finished piece.

I met so many talented artists in Dahlonega and my 84 year old mother enjoyed picking up my award in Miami. It was a week full of color from the trees and the local artists.

Love People.....Don't Paint Them?

The title of this blog is a question I keep asking myself. I love to be around people, laughing, talking, etc. In fact, I consider myself a "people person". So why is it that I do not attempt to paint them? A while back I started a painting of my granddaughter, but never completed it. Well, this summer I decided to do it. I had taken a photograph, over a year ago, of a sweet little boy coming out of an ice cream shop. I have found that the first step in painting is to be excited about what you will paint and this photo did that for me. I also decided to do this because I now have two grandchildren and what a beautiful gift to leave them than a painting? Maybe this would get me started.

I chose the hardest medium, I think, watercolor. Here is the completed painting. Feel free to give me your comments.

Aging Life lessons

Most of us see our parents age and die. Sometimes it happens early in life and you are not able to learn the lessons that aging brings to one’s life. Having lost my Dad in my 30’s, when I still thought I had another 100 years left, was quite different than watching my Mother age and deteriorate now.

No, this is not a depressing personal story, but a way to assess where I am in life, what am I creating and what I want to accomplish. My Mom does not realize that even at this stage in our lives, she is still teaching me valuable lessons. This experience has put an urgency in what I want to see and do. What new creative method can I learn before my fingers don’t move this well and I am unable to get around as swiftly as I do now? Watching another household being taken apart has also enforced my sense of generosity. I have learned that I should give away my treasures early while I am still able to understand and enjoy the happiness that it brings to others.

Let’s assess and enjoy the beauty and opportunities that this day brings. Look, plan and create as if you will not be able to do it tomorrow!

SoMi Art Walk

This coming Saturday starts the art walk season for the City of South Miami (SoMi).

"SoMi ArtWalk is a free event in the heart of South Miami Town Center. One night each month, October through March, pedestrian friendly South Miami bustles with culture and local artists as participating venues open their doors and invite you to stroll around SoMi"

South Miami is also the place where the Manatee Fest took place. While you stroll, pick up a map at the First National Bank of South Miami. The map will indicate the location of all of these works of art. My manatee, "Willy", is at the corner of Sunset Drive and 57th Avenue. Daniel “Krave” Fila…...At The Lowe

What happens at the Lowe….cannot stay at the Lowe!

I must tell you about the lecture/presentation we had last week. It was mind-opening and inspiring. Imagine having a graffiti/urban artist at the Lowe. If the word illegal or maybe gangs comes to your mind when I say graffiti, you are right, but graffiti has moved on to become an acceptable art form created legally and on commissioned walls.

Some of you may not know the name Daniel “Krave” Fila, our lecturer, but if you live in Miami you may have seen his art. Daniel started out as a Miami graffiti artist. He is now better known internationally as an urban artist. His lecture/presentation further opened my mind to this art form. He talks about this art with so much love and passion.

Daniel's work can be seen from the walls of the Wynwood Art District, to the wall across from Domino Park in Little Havana, to a million dollar waterfront mansion. That indicates that his art has crossed ethnic and financial boundaries throughout the City. As a traditional artist, not yet out of the box, Daniel made me want to experiment and express myself in yet another manner. Daniel, here’s what you inspired. Tick Tock..........Wall Clocks!

Whether we like it or not, we are ruled by the 24 hours in a day. We seem to have clocks in every room of the house. We must get up at a certain time, to be able to get to work on time, stay there for a specified period of time, etc. Time…....…can’t ignore it.

Deny Designs has decided to have us enjoy the way we look at time. You may not like the time the clock tells you or where you need to be, but you can always enjoy the art on it. Colorful Coleus

"Colorful Coleus" - Watercolor on Yupo

Ever noticed a coleus? Maybe you don’t know it by name, but it is that small bush with leaves that looks like God just threw in the entire color palette. The leaves can be green, yellow, burgundy and sometimes a mixture of all of those and more. Here in South Florida, we are fortunate to be able to grow these year-round as long as they get some shade in the summer. My friends up north are able to enjoy them in the summer. In fact, this past June I saw the most beautiful ones throughout Chicago.

I have always been so inspired by these that I figured the only way to capture their beauty was to let the watercolors go wild on a piece of yupo paper. For those not familiar with my art, yupo is a synthetic paper that allows you time to manipulate watercolor on the surface of the paper (no absorption) until you like what you see.

You may think that I am only looking up at the sky because of my fascination with clouds, but I also have to check that my feet are on the ground, from time to time, and get inspired by what is below.

What Kind of Painter Are you?

Photography plays a big role in the life of a painter. Many of us paint directly by looking at the photo or at times the photo is just an inspiration to a work of art. I have taken a couple of art classes in the past few years and it is funny to see how different art teachers have an approach to photographs. I had a teacher that did not want to see realistic paintings. He would say if you want it to look like the photo……just look at the photo. I have also had teachers that I have had to stop them because they were so detailed and realistic that they wanted me to paint even the smallest twig in the photo. Here’s an example of a painting inspired by a photo. Can you see how I changed it?

Mosaic Sun Clock

I guess it must be difficult to live with a creative person; always taking photos, painting, knitting, blogging and planning the next project. My poor husband has been dealing with my “super active” personality for 38 years. How does he cope? He joins me in the process. He is creative and expresses himself with photography and videos. Many of you have enjoyed his creative talent documenting events.

Ever since I took a mosaic workshop with Mary Ponchio, he has decided to take on this art form. A while back I blogged about the house numbers he made for our mountain house. He has now decided to make a clock for our Florida patio. This project is much bigger and required some sketching and planning.

It is fun to see someone creating and I can just sit back and watch. His clock has a tropical feel with a blazing sun in the center. In the fall, I plan to get together with my sisters and a couple of friends and have a mosaic day in the patio. I have a feeling he will be joining us with another project in mind.

I often hear people say, “I wish I could paint”. I am a strong believer that we all have talents and ways to express ourselves. Some talents are hidden, but look closely and you will find something that allows you to express yourself.

Art can be pleasing to all of the senses and it does not necessarily have to happen with a brush and some paint. Many of you are fantastic gardeners. To place the right colors together on the ground and create a pleasing flower bed is an artistic creation. Some have a voice that can carry a beautiful tune and it is pleasing to our ears. You may think you can’t create, but all you cooks and bakers are creating something for our sense of taste. Sewing, knitting, decorating, crocheting, flower arranging and even coordinating the right outfit; are a few of the ways to create and express yourself.

Before I painted on canvas, I was creating with needles. I have shared a couple of pieces that I knitted and crocheted. Although I am busy painting, I still take time to knit and crochet for my grandchildren. To express yourself is to give of yourself.
