Is There A Doctor On The Ship

Cold season has hit our house and we keep passing it back and forth so I apologize for not blogging, I have been taking care of everyone and, now, once again, caught the cold back. I hate colds and that's one of the reasons I'd rather cruise at Christmas!

When I was a kid, like clockwork, on or before Christmas Eve, I'd get a sore throat, by Christmas Day, I'd have a full blown cold and was absolutely miserable on the day of the year, most children adore. Strangely enough, since we began cruising, magically this yearly visitor no longer finds me.

Which leads me to today's blog subject. Yes there is a doctor on board your cruise ship.

Should a guest require medical attention while aboard a cruise vessel, the Infirmary staff is available to assist 24 hours a day. The Infirmary is equipped to treat minor non-emergency matters. Physicians are available to render services at a customary fee. While at sea or in port, the availability of medical care may be limited.

Medical Infirmary Hours

The Medical Infirmary on board has daily office hours vary. The medical staff is on call 24 hours a day for emergencies. The hours may vary from ship to ship and whether the ship is in port or at sea.

A charge for medical services will be billed to the guest's On-Board Account and a receipt will be provided for the guest to submit to their insurance company upon return for possible reimbursement.

The physicians on board are independent contractors and are entitled to render services at a customary fee which may vary from ship to ship based on the time of day. The basic fee does NOT include medication, tests or treatment.

Medication

Motion Sickness: (Usually) complimentary Meclizine (Bonine) is available from the Infirmary, Room Service or the Information Desk, free of charge. A motion sickness shot can be administered to those who are actively vomiting, but not as preventive medicine; there is a fee for the shot. The Infirmary does not have motion sickness patches nor wristbands.

Over-the-Counter medications for cold, cough, upset stomach or other minor illnesses can be purchased at the Infirmary. In addition, the shops on board may carry some of these items.

Prescription drugs and vitamins may not be readily available either on board the ship or in the ports-of-call.

Medical Staffing and Equipment

In order to maintain a safe and comfortable environment forguests, infirmaries meet or exceed the standards established by the International Council of Cruise Lines and the American College of Emergency Physicians.

nfirmaries are staffed by qualified physicians and nurses who are committed to providing the highest quality of shipboard medical care.

Doctors are usually required to have a current and valid medical license from the USA, one of its territories, or Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa, or have full registration with the British General Medical Counsel of the United Kingdom or current full registration with the British General Medical Council of the United Kingdom, or current full registration with the medical council of a member country of the European Union. In addition, doctors must demonstrate competent skill levels and hold current certification in basic and advanced cardiac life support and cardiac care, have experience in general medicine or general practice including emergency or critical care, and have one to three years clinical experience and minor surgical skills, and board or similar international certification is preferred. The doctors on board are independent contractors.

Shipboard medical facilities are set up to provide reasonable emergency medical care for guests and crew. In cases of extreme emergency where more comprehensive facilities are required, patients are referred to shoreside facilities.

In addition to standard lifesaving equipment such as defibrillators and external pacemakers, our infirmaries carry some of the latest in medical technology including thrombolytic therapy, electrocardiograph machines, lab equipment, pulse oxymeters and x-ray machines on many of our ships.

A Merry Christmas at Sea

It's not hard to get into the Christmas spirit right from the start, as ships are trimmed from stem to stern in festive holiday decor, complete with wreaths, holly, mistletoe and, of course, Christmas trees, which often even decorate the ship's mast. It's not uncommon to see Yuletide carolers strolling the decks singing favorite holiday tunes, or waiters wearing Santa hats. Seasonal entertainment abounds, as passengers may enjoy themed production shows, live music and films during the voyage. Passengers can also attend midnight mass and inter-denominational church service.

A special Christmas dinner features traditional favorites such as roast turkey or goose, and passengers will enjoy a range of seasonal sweet treats such as gingerbread mousse, mincemeat pie, chocolate Yule logs and special Christmas cookies.

With kids out of school, holiday cruises have become a popular getaway for families. And to keep younger passengers busy, youth counselors provide a wide array of activities including parties, sing-a-longs and arts and crafts classes, where they can create ornaments to decorate the ship's Christmas tree. Junior cruisers can also participate in an endearing holiday play, which they perform for passengers. On Christmas day, Santa Claus makes a surprise appearance, bringing joy (and gifts) to each child on board.

After a week and half of being down with a horrible cold, I was finally getting better. Bam, it's back.

Colds in the Work Place - A rant

Still sick here but, getting a bit better. Don't you hate co-workers who drag themselves into work when they clearly should be staying home and don't you love it when they share their germs?

I'm very annoyed and today's blog is actually a rant and recommendation for cold sufferers out there since you probably caught your cold from a co-worker. There are several types of co-workers that you should watch out for when it's cold and flu season.

There is the sharer - this guy makes his cold known. You hear him sneezing down the hall way, coughing at his desk and, telling everyone in the elevator that he has a cold and to stay away but, he doesn't. You never see the sharer until he has a cold and then he makes it a point to come to your desk and sneeze and look for sympathy from you. And while he's better in less than a week, you have his cold for two weeks or more.

There is perpetually sick single Mom. I'm not insensitive and I have tons of respect for women who are single Mom, they are truly carrying the world on their backs. What I don't like are the daycare centers where they must leave their little ones who always pick up something who passes it along to Mom, who passes it along to co-workers.

Dirty tissues guy. Every office has one, he's a nice guy but when he's sick he leaves his used tissues, cough medicine and everything else related to easing cold symptoms on his desk and yours. Naturally, you have to touch it and boom, you've got his cold.

And he's always the first one to say to you "make sure you dispose of those dirty tissues, we wouldn't want anyone else to catch your cold now, do we?"

Blame the husband co-worker. There is always a co-worker who blames everything on her husband, even her cold.

Everyone's sick. This is what happened to me this week, our entire office has a cold and it just keeps going around and around. Of course, the types above help to spread the germs more efficently but, why is it that they are never sick for long?

Ok enough ranting for today, I think I've made my point and I hope I made you laugh

Ah-Choo! Prepare Yourself for Cold Season

Sorry for not posting sooner, I've been very sick with a killer cold. I haven't even been to work in two days and doubt I'll make tomorrow. So, while this has nothing to do with cruising, I thought I would borrow a post from one of my fans who writes her own blog.

The sounds of winter -- the wind rustling through the trees, the cheers at football games, and, of course, coughing and sneezing! When the weather turns colder, bothersome cold viruses again run rampant.

Studies show that the average person contracts about three colds per year; and those who are in contact with young children tend to get even more. Often a cold begins with a sore throat. A runny or congested nose follows and, within a few days, a cough begins. A cold can last two or three weeks; however, most people are better within seven to 10 days.

Because colds are caused by viruses, there is no cure for the common cold. Antibiotics do not kill these viruses and can lead to resistant strains of bacteria. Prevention is the best approach to combat the cold virus; however once it’s taken hold, the best you can do is try to minimize your symptoms.

Here are a few tips to prepare you and your family for the onslaught of the cold season, which tends to run from September until March or April.

Wash Your Hands

Frequent handwashing is one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep from catching a cold. Anti-bacterial washes allow you to get the benefits of handwashing when you don’t have access to soap and water. Alcohol-based foams and gels are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control for hand hygiene.

Fall Medicine Cabinet Cleaning

Just in case you do catch a cold, make sure your medicine cabinet or first aid kit is fully stocked with current over-the-counter medications. You should examine the contents of your medicine cabinet and discard any expired medicines at least once per year. Then you’ll want to restock with a supply of cough suppressants, pain relievers and antihistamines that may provide the perfect combination to combat the symptoms of any colds you might catch this season. Keep in mind that the most convenient medicines are portable so that you can manage your symptoms even when you’re not at home. Portable medicines, such as gelcap-formulated cough suppressants mean you can get effective cough relief whenever and wherever you need it. For example, maximum strength DexAlone is a nonprescription gelcap-formulated cough suppressant that is stronger and longer lasting than some popular cough syrups. Eat Your Fruits and Veggies

Maintaining a well-balanced diet is also a cold prevention tip. Plenty of nutritious food is essential to building a healthy immune system. A well-balanced diet provides sources of energy and nutrition for optimal growth and development. Taking a daily multi-vitamin also helps ensure that you will receive an adequate dose of minerals and vitamins.

Sleeping Beauty

On average, a person needs seven to eight hours of sleep every night. Lack of sleep can lower the immune system’s ability to react when needed. Without sufficient sleep, the immune system is hard-pressed to keep up with its nightly repair work. This creates the opportunity for disease processes to begin.

These are just a few suggestions to help you and your family enjoy the fall season without a runny nose, achy head and persistent cough.

I'm coming down with a cold which a co-worker so generously decided to share with all of us, so thanks to my kind and generous friend Ajani who writes Ajani's Royal Caribbean's Project Genesis, he is allowing me to cut and paste his post today. And, since technically it is a holiday sailing - 4th of July in 2008 - I do feel it is an appropriate post for here. Anyone else out there with a cold today?

No I'm not the famous Rosie O but, I am someone who loves cruise vacations and, this blog is for anyone who loves to sail during the holidays or is thinking about sailing during the holiday. Yes, there will be blatant advertising but, only for two very specific cruises. However, you will also find tips for cruising during the holidays, photos, and lots of other things to make you want to book a cruise during the holidays too.
