DISTRICT PRIORITIES (NAVARATNAS)
The District Governor’s Priority Projects for the year 2010-11 are grouped into 9 categories as follows:
1. Educational (Rotary Vidya)
2. Environmental (Rotary Bhoomi)
3. Hygienic (Rotary Shuddhi)
4. Familial (Rotary Parivar)
5. Social (Rotary Janatha)
6. Health (Rotary Arogyam)
7. Solacium (Rotary Aashwas)
8. Sports & Games (Rotary Creeda)
9. Cleft Free District

Under the first 8 categories 8 programmes/projects each are included. The 9th category is a unique programme which requires the involvement of many clubs of the District.
The major thrust areas and the programmes/projects under each area are as follows:
1. Educational (Rotary Vidya)
Education is the backbone of every nation’s progress. As it is said, the destiny of a nation is being shaped in her classrooms. Proper education can make many miracles happen in the onward march of all nations. However, many educational institutions, especially in rural areas, in our country are devoid of even basic facilities. The students who attend these institutions are no less talented when compared to others, but lack of adequate facilities hamper their academic growth. Rotary, being an organization that is concerned much about the welfare of the new generation, is the right organization to address this issue. So, the first among the District Priorities is educational improvement under which the following projects can be carried out:
a) Construction of classrooms/toilets for schools
b) Providing pure drinking water facility to schools
c) Providing furniture/books/lab equipments/computers to schools
d) Providing bicycles to economically backward girl students of 8th standard (minimum 10 nos.)
e) Arranging Career Guidance classes and Coaching for Competitive Examinations for school/college students
f) Starting Free Counselling and Career Coaching Centres
g) Arranging Personality Development classes for students
h) Organizing Capacity Building Programmes for teachers

2. Environmental (Rotary Bhoomi)
Man’s greed has been carving into the vitals of our mother earth and its disastrous consequences have started grinning at the entire world. If overexploitation of nature is not stopped and nature protected, all living beings on earth will perish in recent years. Cruelty to the environment is a global phenomenon and only international organizations like Rotary can undertake massive movements to protect and preserve Planet Earth. Global campaign and concrete measures are to be resorted to in this direction. Rotary clubs have to ‘think globally and act locally’ in this regard. The suggested projects/programmes to this effect are:
a) Planting and protecting trees
b) Rainwater harvesting
c) Conducting Nature Camps
d) Cleaning/renovating ponds
e) Campaigns to reduce pollution
f) Nature Awareness rallies/competitions
g) Promotion of group farming at schools/colleges
h) Promotion of Non-conventional Energy

3. Hygienic (Rotary Shuddhi)
A serious concern for personal and public hygiene is one of the top priorities of any developing/developed society. Only if the society is free from unhygienic conditions, it can think of progressive measure. Though the communities around us are somewhat serious about personal hygiene, public hygiene has not become their priority. With our strong membership base and expertise, we can take up the challenge of educating the community around about the importance of hygiene. So also, we can extend our helping hands to the hapless and the needy. The projects and programmes falling under this category are:
a) Providing mosquito nets to poor senior citizens (minimum 50 nos)
b) Mosquito eradication drives
c) Clean City campaigns
d) Sanitation drives
e) Providing waste disposal facilities
f) Providing safe drinking water to the public
g) Awareness seminars/camps for special categories such as women, students, workers
h) Public hygiene promotion drives in association with governmental and non-governmental agencies

4. Familial (Rotary Parivar)
Ours is an organization that attaches much importance to family ties. As per Rotary norms, even organizational involvement comes only after fulfilling the commitment to the family. The success of every individual is keenly dependent on the support and encouragement that s/he receives from his/her family and real satisfaction comes to him/her when s/he discharges his responsibility to the family along with serving the society. Realizing this universal principle, Rotary has been giving due importance to the family in all its activities. The committed involvement of the family will further make Rotary’s activities more meaningful and constructive. Therefore, measures like the following are to be adopted to enhance the role of the family in Rotary’s mission of serving the society:
a) Enrolling female family members into Rotary
b) Medical check up for family
c) Arranging Inter Club/Inter District Family Meets
d) Honouring Rotarians and spouses on Wedding Day/Anniversary
e) Celebrating the birthdays of Rotarians by inviting their family also to the function
f) Constituting endowments in the name of family members and distributing them in functions attended by family
g) Organizing national/international tours
h) Arranging intra/inter club competitions for family members

5. Social (Rotary Janatha)
The greatness of a service organization is not measured only in terms of its years of existence. More important is the reach of its activities as far as the common man is concerned. How far an organization can wipe the tears of the underprivileged sections of the neighbouring community is definitely is a mark of its greatness. Organizations like Rotary can do a great deal, as we have been doing since 1905, to make the public life better and also to bring smiles into the faces of the deprived sections of the society. Individual Rotary clubs can take up a number of projects for the benefit of the neighbouring community. We have to remember that permanent projects will be more useful to and appreciated by the people around. The following are some of the community service projects that Rotary clubs can take up for making civic life more comfortable:
a) Construction of bus shelter
b) Construction of memorial monuments honouring freedom fighters/martyrs
c) Setting up children’s parks
d) Construction of traffic islands
e) Establishment of ‘We Help’ centres to assist the public in official procedure
h) Organizing Mass Marriage functions for the poor and needy

6. Health (Rotary Arogyam)
As the saying goes, “When wealth is lost, nothing is lost; when health is lost, something is lost”. No strong nation can be built with people of impoverished health. If the body is weak, the mind also will be weak and thus the individual will lose the spirit to do anything for his/her own good or for the welfare of the people around. Rotary has expertise within itself in the avenue of healthcare and world over, this organization has been taking many mega projects to ensure proper health of the people. The Polio Plus programme is a very good case in point. Individual Rotary clubs will have to lay a great role in ensuring the health of the society and the following projects/programmes will be good moves in that direction:
a) Organizing General Medical Camps
b) Organizing Heart Care Camps
c) Organizing Eye Care Camps
d) Organizing Cancer Care Camps
e) Organizing Diabetes Care Camps
f) Conducting General Health Awareness Camps for public/student community
g) Improving the facilities of government hospitals
h) Ortho Care

7. Solacium (Rotary Aashwas)
There are thousands of people in our society who suffer the pangs of neglect and contempt by the society. Many children and aged people suffer a lot for no fault of their own. In the hectic life of the modern period, people often do not get time or do not feel the necessity to serve such hapless people. The role of service organizations becomes more prominent here. Ever since its inception, Rotary has been trying its level best to give solace to such victims of social discrimination. We have to carry this torch of solace forward. The projects that individual clubs cal take up to this effect are:
a) Adopting children of convicts
b) Adopting children of AIDS victims
c) Setting up of Free Rescue Homes for poor senior citizens
d) Setting up schools for differently abled children
e) Providing Rest & Recreational Centres for senior citizens
f) Setting up public libraries for professional college students from poor families
g) Promoting donation of human organs
h) Providing palliative care to terminally ill patients

8. Sports & Games (Rotary Creeda)
Sports and Games activities serve manifold purposes. They improve the mental and physical strength of an individual, they provide entertainment and relaxation to individuals, they uphold the honour of a community/nation before others, and they promote international understanding. Also, sportsman spirit is a good remedy to many interpersonal problems. Realizing this, from time immemorial, all societies have attached much importance to sorts and games. This year, we would like to make sports and games as one of the thrust areas. Under this head various activities to promote sports and games and to develop talents of international standards are planned. The major activities on the anvil are:
a) Construction of playgrounds/pavilions
b) Providing sports kit to schools
c) Conducting tournaments for public
d) Conducting tournaments for Rotarians and family
e) Organizing coaching camps for specific games
f) Honouring veteran sports persons
g) Recognition and promotion of young talents
h) Setting up permanent academies for promotion of specific games/sports
9. Cleft Free District
Nothing better epitomizes the identity of an individual than his face. There are several disorders causing deformity of the face. While some of these deformities are congenital, a few of these are acquired. Children who are born with congenital deformities like cleft lip and palate not only have esthetic problems but also suffer from functional problems like difficulty in speech and swallowing besides, of course the psychological trauma that inevitably accompanies such disorders. These disorders are most commonly observed in lower socio-economic inmates of our society which prevent them from seeking therapy.
To help these patients RI District 3202 with the help of Face Foundation and Smile Train would like to make this into district project with the aim of rendering District 3202 a Cleft Free District.

The Rotary Foundation has invested great care and considerable background work into this plan. Based on the findings of two consulting firms and the responses of 10,000 Rotarians to a comprehensive questionnaire, the Future Vision Committee and Foundation Trustees have worked hard to move forward with the Future Vision Plan to Rotarians. When districts and clubs take advantage of this opportunity, staff at our offices around the world will be freed to work on other issues that will further enhance the future of the Foundation. Trustees have worked hard to move forward with the Future Vision Plan.

The Rotary Foundation has been very successful over the years. Yet, as the world changes, our Foundation needs to change with it. Cooperation with other organizations is the future, and The Rotary Foundation must not fail to get on board. We need to sharpen our vision and expand our ambitions. Today people do not join organizations – they join causes. We need to take advantage of what we have learned from our polio eradication program f what we have learned from our polio eradication program: We need to think big.

When we received the substantial contributions from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we could handle them easily because we had built up the administration of Polio Plus over a period of more than 20 years. But if we were to receive grants of a similar size for other programs, it is not clear that clubs and districts would be prepared to effectively manage and utilize the funding, or that the Foundation's administration, as it stands today, could handle such gifts.

The Future Vision Plan will move more responsibility, control, and flexibility to districts and clubs to allow them to monitor their own funds. Never forget that The Rotary Foundation belongs to Rotarians. When districts and clubs take advantage of this opportunity, staff at our offices around the world will be freed to work on other issues that will further enhance the future of the Foundation.

Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar
Foundation Trustee Chair

Fwd: Plant Saplings Of Love

To each of us, Rotary has a different and special meaning. Some of us cherish the warm fellowship our club offer, while others especially appreciate the opportunities to serve and help those in need. Many of us value for its international spirit, which so efficiently bind us together in service from every part of the world.

There are thousands of activities are going on at this moment in the name of Rotary. Whatever we do one element remains constant: The best Rotary fellowship and service always comes from the heart. When love is infused into our actions, we do not question the time or money we are sacrificing. We are inspired to do more, to give. Love is the motivating force behind all Rotary's best work

As Mother Teresa once said: It is not how much we give but how much love we put into giving." When we perform an act of love, it will inherently be more effective and will penetrate more deeply into the hearts and minds of those we serve.

We Rotarians already have so much love within ourselves, but with the ambitious goals that we have set before us, we need more people to share our beliefs and commitments. The best way we can ensure the continuity of our organization is by planting saplings of love in as many heart as possible

When service comes from our heart and is inspired by our own experiences, we do not simply write a cheque ;we write Rotary into our lives

Let us all work together in hands Rotary in Building communities & Bridging continents

Yours in Rotary
Rtn.PP PHF Dr.Anil Kuriakose
