<p>Even if you are a skilled employee or executive, you landed, made contact with, found, and applied for that position from home online initially.</p>
<p>Add to this the big government effect (broken budgets) and the rebellion that will ensue: the jobs of the future will be independent contractors, not employees.</p>
<p>All this changes the skills necessary for any job, as we must all manage our reputation online, manage contacts and clients, and keep track of our own businesses.  Doing this all from home, in your home, warrants a change in life-styles.</p>
<p>The brave new world that is coming moves faster, provides less support (not more, the budget is busted), and is actually less forgiving than the slow-moving economies past.</p>
<p>New technologies are worth money before anybody can study about how to teach about them.</p>
<p>If all this scares you, I will remind you about how much of a salesperson&#8217;s job was spent dialing and waiting and leaving messages and playing phone tag.</p>
<p>In the new market, the bricks and mortar that once established credibility, may now brand you as a dinosaur; the friendly chit chat results in a hang up.  We are accelerated, independent.</p>
<p>A good website, that is editable by you, the source of your essence, shared with the rest of the world, feeding you, nourishing you, branding you is much more important than a business card now.  Get the other guys business card!</p>
<p>You need to be more concerned with your &#8220;on the cloud&#8221; contact management system, your social profiles, groups, posts, articles, and endorsements, and building an audience who wants to opt-in to your message by connecting to you online.</p>

<p>As publishing becomes more and more digital and interactively accessible in nature, attention spans, browsing and searching methods, tastes and customs are also changing.</p>
<p>More and more of us start our day with our morning cup and a blog, online news video, and/or email to catch up on to begin our days; where the norm was once the newspaper, local TV, Radio&#8230;</p>
<p>As we adopt technological tools to manage information, subscriptions, contacts, entertainment and relationships, we find ourselves enabled and empowered to interact more, maintain more contacts, and do so in less time, with less effort.  We become more and more efficient at finding consuming more media faster with less time necessary for searching.</p>

<p>Worldwide, digital ad spending passed the $100-billion mark for the first time last year, according to new eMarketer estimates, and will increase by a further 15.1% in 2013 to $118.4 billion.</p>
<p>That will put worldwide digital ad spending levels—including online and mobile advertising spending, other than messaging-based formats—at 21.7% of the total spent on ads in all media this year, and on track to account for more than one-quarter of all ad spending by 2016.</p>

<p>When you factor into the above the factor that digital advertising can be much less expensive than other forms of media, you reveal the mega-trend of billions of advertising dollars finding new reach in Social Media and Digital Media in general.   Now everything else revolves around and feeds digital contacts, content, tracking, CRM, document storage, email, tracking&#8230;they all merge online at the website now.</p>
<p>Since almost nobody will do any business with anybody without doing research online first, you can no longer separate your overall reputation from your digital one &#8211; they are the same.</p>
<p>Managing ones proper name, company name, product name, reputation or all of the above online is accomplished easily, if you know how:</p>

<li>Be your own best friend, fan, contact, advocate, connection, commenter and subscriber, formatting everything for SEO</li>

<h2>Until now, there were basically two ways to be visible online:</h2>
<ol>
<li>Pay more than anybody else for every hit, lead, action, click or column-inch for a non-exclusive page populated by your competitors</li>
<li>Feed Google (and the other search engines) content</li>
</ol>
<p>If you think that broad geographical or niche targets for organic key word search are out of reach organically, then think again!  This page was obviously made for a reason: <a href="http://socialmediasystems.com/real-estate-search-engine-marketing-social-media-advertising/">http://socialmediasystems.com/real-estate-search-engine-marketing-social-media-advertising/</a>  is a little page built several years ago, which has me constantly ranking for several searches on my old site.  I reserved socialmediasystems .com and .org for 8.95 annual in 2007, subsequently did $779,000.00 from that domain in 9 calendar months left in that year, and now the .com domain name alone appraises for over $10,000.</p>
<p dir="ltr" id="docs-internal-guid-46541b1a-4704-d3c4-d8f3-66b8fd1f6e2b">A website with earnings can be worth 100 times earnings or more!</p>
<p>I get so tired of hearing young, linear thinkers who think that they know it all talk about how the best opportunities are past!  Type &#8220;<a title="local news advertising" href="http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&amp;rlz=&amp;q=local+news+advertising">Local News Advertising</a>&#8221; into Google and you will find my YouTube Video.  Type <a title="local news advertising agency" href="http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&amp;rlz=&amp;q=local+news+advertising+agency">local news advertising agency</a>, and my strategy and results are revealed.</p>
<p>Intentional organic rankings in the SRP&#8217;s (search results pages) can be and is done.</p>
<p>This simple WordPress Blog, for instance, ranks for a host of competitive searches, including &#8220;<a title="internet advertising consultant" href="http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&amp;rlz=&amp;q=internet+advertising+consultant">internet advertising consultant</a>&#8220;.</p>
<p>I do this by creating content, content that is unique because it came from me; then spreading it around, building a trail back to the source.  You can do it to.</p>
<p>This living e-book was only an idea in 2010 when we published the 2010 Rothman Guide (originally a collaboration between my son and I).  It fed us then as it feeds us now.</p>

<p>You will find thousands of conflicting S.E.O. guides for blog posting.  My protege John Kitts, who was my original trainee and who now has had his own UpLog.org ‘clone’ (the original one) since 2006, where he earns a full time living from about 100 clients and growing, has made a series of great videos covering some of our style of WordPress S.E.O. -<a title="bog posting SEO link authority building video training" href="http://cityscoop.us/services/training/">they are here, the one above is the first one on this page</a>.</p>
<p>My article from earlier this year, has been replaced line one number one with the version that DZONE published here – due to their amazing link-authority: ‘<a title="blog posting SEO guide Google search" href="http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&amp;rlz=&amp;q=blog+posting+seo+guide">blog posting SEO guide</a>‘ Google search.</p>
<p>But when you compete as we do, with people like seobook.org, seomoz.com, wordtracker.com and Mashable.com (the largest, best optimized WordPress MU site on the planet), it takes more than onsite and offsite technique and strategy to rank for searches like this one which bring up 25,700,000 competitive results from other professionals: it takes link-authority.</p>
<p>It is because DZone.com is one of the largest and oldest directories, and has been around since the eighties, and has always been a high quality content aggregate, that the article of mine that they published out-rank mine.   Indeed, if I was not an established expert with link authority and rankings of my own, they would not have approached me originally to blog with them as a part of their new “MVB” program, and the proof of concept in this article would not exist: <a href="http://www.dzone.com/articles/2013-5-minute-blog-posting-seo">http://www.dzone.com/articles/2013-5-minute-blog-posting-seo</a>.</p>
<p>An educated SEO expert with a high IQ may be able to reverse engineer what I do and achieve some success – but only longevity and consistency of content production build link authority on Google and others.  The highest bump of all to your own authority is to be re-published thus; and their reason for doing so is obvious since it is creating rankings and traffic for them…</p>
<p>To fully understand this you must understand that it is a specialty: a specialist cannot do it, on purpose calling it ahead of time as only I do, even with everything I do not share, without link – authority of their own.</p>
<p>The content market is maturing online, and slowly replacing the clout of other forms of media.  The Nielsen Rankings are already changing, and are more and more dependent on on-demand online viewing, and social media engagement and feedback.  This trend, that we started talking about here: <a href="http://socialmediasystems.com/blog/the-slow-death-of-seo-as-we-know-it/">http://socialmediasystems.com/blog/the-slow-death-of-seo-as-we-know-it/</a> in 2008 will continue.  As the market matures, clear winners like DMOZ.com, and Yahoo Voices (formerly Associatedcontent.com) will position themselves, and traditional SEO will give way to modern content marketing.  You cannot go back in time, so you cannot catch DZONE, Yahoo voices, or even me at UpLog.org with 120+ blogs and growing created just for this purpose.</p>
<p>The only way to the top of very competitive global searches now is to get somebody, some group, some moderator, or some content publisher to see value in your content, as we have done here; or to become a niche content publisher/aggregate as our clients at UpLog.org do, connected to “the ROAR of all of US”  for size and power.</p>
<p>Our best SEO tricks will never be published, even for our clients – that training is done one – on- one, in private.</p>
<p>However, let me recommend groups, especially on Linkedin, Google+ and Facebook.  If you are a regular contributor to the right niche communities  and/or are a founder of a niche community or group that grows and is active, you gain that authority on your own, for merit.  A new development in the last year is the introduction of Google communities; they are new, they are growing  and they work very well for rankings authority; example: this <a title="Building a company" href="https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/111285810442781953487?cfem=1">Building a Company</a> group already has 20,470 members.  If I had started it only a few months ago, I would be very happy with that!  It is an open group, so anybody wanting to reach 20,000 consultants (me) is behooved to post there, as I will post this article – probably after DMOS re-publishes it up so that I can use that version for credibility<img alt=";)" src="http://rothmanmarketing.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif" /></p>
<p>Re-read this article three times, and you will begin to see the big picture, the way that it is all the same as it always was; the media is digital now, some of the players have changed, but the proverbial game remains the same.</p>

<p>Selling new media technology and methods in old, over-ripe bricks and mortar markets like retail clothing, sports equipment, bars and lounges, car dealerships is more education than it is selling: the cheese has already moved and is moving.</p>
<p>Early adopters like these, are dominating search results, social networks, Facebook&#8230;these are our sponsors for our little <a title="Coos Bay Social Network Google search" href="http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&amp;rlz=&amp;q=Coos+Bay+Social+Network">Coos Bay Social Network</a>.  Three months ago,  <a title="organic Google search for coos Bay Social Netowrk" href="Coos Bay Social Network">these search results</a> were dominated by the yellow pages, the chamber of commerce, Meetup.com was number one even though the nearest group was 69 miles away.  But no outdated manufactured behemoth is any match for properly optimized and promoted local content: my local clients rank for every conceivable desired search, <strong>cumulatively, for MERIT, in perpetuity!  </strong>Examples (they are also on every page of <a title="1 coos bay social network according to Google" href="http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&amp;rlz=&amp;q=Coos+Bay+Social+Network">coosbay.uplog.org</a>)</p>

<p>Yet many bricks and mortar businesses are just getting websites now for the first time; they are lacking in many search areas such as social networks and images and YouTube; and they are still spending way over the required budget on things like the yellow pages &#8211; lead generators who get almost no traffic, and who charge $300 month or more for minuscule ads on pages populated by every competitor in town &#8211; I hope your name is 1-A!</p>
<p>Somewhere between changing everything that was working, and to some extent still does,  over to something unknown, risking failure; or watching a slowly slipping away market fade until you are out of business, there is sanity, survival, and profits at less than the outdated yellow page ad alone costs&#8230;</p>
<p>In change is opportunity, and risk.  What used to be called S.E.O. (search engine optimization), was a fuzzy combined discipline of onsite optimization, black hat and grey hat hacker tricks, and taking advantage of what others do not know; but has now evolved into what I call S.M.O (social media optimization), now that social media and new media have become <strong>digital media, THE MEDIA</strong>, larger than all four of the major M.S.M. (main stream media) networks combined.</p>

<li>An ongoing strategy of content production and distribution through social networks and groups linked-back to the website, building traffic and rankings organically.</li>
<li>Pictures and Videos and Opinions to share,  the more the better.</li>
<li>An understanding of basic rules for formatting Meta Data on all of the above for long-term cumulative success.</li>
<li>An ever-increasing list of customers, employees, contacts, friends and neighbors resulting from the above, whom you can reach anytime with any message in nothing flat for free!</li>

<li> I always start by thanking people for the privilege of being connected, introduced.   This tells them that I respect their privacy.</li>
<li>Have a value statement: why would anybody want to talk to you?  This is in your mind and on the tip of your tongue through the whole process.</li>
<li>Make it personal, and optimize and brand for search.  For instance, our newsletter is the  &#8221;<a title="B2B Home Business Network News com" href="http://B2Bhomebusinessnetworknews.com">B2B Home Business Network News .com</a>&#8221; and it has over 130,0000 opt-in subscribers, and it is the number one &#8220;B2B home business&#8221; on Google, it has become it&#8217;s own brand, and that is exactly what we do for our clients.</li>
<li><span style="line-height: 16px;">Be the source of original unique in all the world content, not regurgitated cliches or hopped-on band wagons.  If you cannot create it hire somebody who can.</span></li>
<li>Pictures and videos are also websites and they can rank on searches, so&#8230;</li>
<li>Take time to properly optimize all meta data for all content including pictures and video, not just blog posts, using congruent key words and avoiding punctuation</li>
<li>Spread your content around regularly in groups linked back to you, building traffic for an ever increasing number of words and phrases &#8211; don&#8217;t worry about duplicate content other than have the content be original and unique, and show Google a link back to the source, Google will rank the source.</li>
<li>When people voluntarily connect to you, follow you, become your friend, +1, like or otherwise interact with you, like comments on your posts, look at who they are, like what they did.</li>
<li>If they look like interesting prospects, by email or posting, tell them who you are a how you are connected, and request to set a time to talk in person, or on the phone.  If they ask what for, be subtle, after all you are strangers; &#8221;I just wanted to chat and see if we may do any business together.&#8221;</li>
<li>Once you have your appointment, start out by asking them to tell you what they do, everyone likes to talk about themselves  and this will give you information to use if you are to suggest doing business.</li>
</ol>

<p>Don&#8217;t do these:</p>
<ol>
<li><span style="line-height: 16px;">Don&#8217;t be too assuming, you are strangers &#8211; respect other peoples space and privacy</span></li>
<li> Don&#8217;t be too aggressive &#8211; be a whole person who talks normally, not just a salesperson pushing a product &#8211; this is a two way conversation.</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t be generic, in other words: you are not just another Realtor or banker or lawyer or photographer &#8211; remember your value statement and never forget that your client has not heard it yet even if you are tired of saying it.</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t skip to the bottom line &#8211; like dating, you must first get a date, then make it fun, then maybe dance on the next date &#8211; I would not usually expect a deal to close in one conversation with a stranger you met online.  The product or service needs to be good enough for them to buy it after careful consideration.</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t lie, everything is public online!</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t misrepresent your size or expertise; that kind of selling is outdated, and, frankly, educated people find it disgusting.</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t start the conversation without saying hello,  introduce yourself  just like you would to a stranger in public</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t forget your picture and some public information &#8211; social media profiles need faces and some info on them; no face, no info, no rapport, no connection.</li>
</ol>
