Our friends at US label Manimal Vinyl have released a fantastic compilation in order to raise money for the Warchild charity.

The compilation is a tribute to David Bowie called ‘We Were So Turned On‘ and features the likes of Duran Duran, Devendra Banhart’s Megapuss, A Place To Bury Strangers, Vivian Girls and Swahili Blonde with John Frusciante.

As a Somerset lass I’ve been going to Glastonbury since I was one of those
babies you see bobbing along in neon mini builders’ headphones (FYI
they barely block out the ice cream van tune let alone the main
stage. I now suffer from mild tinnitus – thanks mum and dad) whose
pram you have to strategically clamber over every time you want to
move a row back in the Pyramid crowd. I’ve been bred on pints of cider
made from actual apples rather than ones which make you feel as though
you’re supping watered-down golden syrup, wandered straight to the barrier of
Radiohead ’09 mid-‘Creep’ without getting a knuckle sandwich and known what it is not to have to hide my purse at the foot of my sleeping bag each
night. Needless to say, Reading is not my bag.

Nevertheless, this year I braved the Friday in order to take Reading virgins Warpaint down for a performance and some promo. Here they are merrily rehearsing ‘Undertow’ in the bus on the way down, unaware of what’s at the end of the motorway:

Nerves kick in when we stop at Argos to buy wellies only to be told
they’ve sold out. We pick up a few copies of The Metro instead and
discover a quarter of a million gallons of water was pumped out of the site the day before to prevent it from flooding.

We also find out the fate of the cat-in-the-wheelie-bin lady and Metro’s playlist for her.

Arriving at Reading as a twenty-something-year-old I feel like a mum gate-crashing the country’s biggest GCSE results afterparty. We
plough through the hoards of tent-faced sixteen-year-olds and arrive
at our first stop, the BBC Treehouse. Here the band play a haunting
acoustic version of ‘Undertow’ for BBC 3 (check it out above) over Biffy Clyro’s thrashings over on the Main Stage.

In true Reading fashion, each band’s set is pushed back by half an
hour. I take this opportunity to check out Reading’s one redeeming feature: its new band tents. Indie’s latest dream couple Elizabeth Sankey and Jeremy Warmsley bring their new bedroom-penned ‘Summer Camp’ EP to the Festival Republic stage. Live, they’re blossoming faster than Liz’s jumpsuit collection (today: shimmering silver – a bold move away from her usual floral gettup). Avi Buffalo (now minus the bantering keyboard player) and Manc hipsters Egyptian Hip Hop are also among the highlights. Next I go in search of some nourishment and came back ten pounds
down with the best I could find: an orange Slush Puppy and a
deep-fat-fried veggie burger. Because of the arena’s layout (stages
set in a circle leaving a pit of mud in the middle for people to treck
aimlessly across), the girl who screams in my ear genuinely thinking
I’m “her from N-Dubz” and getting lost because I’d rather not pay nine
quid for a programme/map, it takes me an hour to get back.

Sodden wet, bloated with Tuborg and feeling double my age, I sit in a
bar playing Connect 4 with a toddler called Macio and his mum until
it’s time to go home. Unless I regress to a pre-pubescent or join
QOTSA, next year I’ll take the lineup and leave the rest by
experiencing Reading on TV from my sofa.

Belle and Sebastian: Find out how to hear the new Belle and Sebastian single before everyone else

Belle and Sebastian will be releasing Write About Love as a new single.

The band will be giving the single away to just one of their Twitter followers on Monday. The track will be made available to everyone as a free download on Tuesday 7th of September for a very limited period to download.

It will be the winner’s choice what to do with it ahead of release. They can keep it to themselves in the knowledge that no-one else has it; share it with their friends; hold a listening party at their home or they could let the world either hear it or hear all about it online (and see if we get upset in the process!) – the choice is entirely theirs. To put yourself in the frame to receive your own copy of Write About Love on Monday, here’s what you have to do:

If you haven’t already done so, sign up to follow us on twitter @bellesglasgow and then post one 140 character message using the hashtag #writeaboutlove. The content of the message is entirely up to you: it could be to share the TV show with your followers, or be more generally about the band or the album – it is up to you.

As well as mailing the track to the winner immediately, the winner will also receive a finished copy of the album on vinyl and CD before its release and some other assorted B&S goodness delivered to their home.

Belle and Sebastian: Watch the new TV show from Belle and Sebastian

Below is the first in series of transmissions of varying sizes and shapes from Belle and Sebastian to mark the impending release of their eighth album, Belle and Sebastian Write About Love.

The first episode of Belle and Sebastian TV is a fully realized, half-hour mixture of music, chat and revealing (and not so revealing) insights from the band filmed in Glasgow over the last few weeks.

Presented by Dougie Anderson and produced by Forest of Black, it features performances of two of the songs from the album: I Want The World to Stop and I Didn’t See It Coming.

Warpaint: Watch Warpaint play an acoustic version of new track 'Undertow' for BBC3

Warpaint played two storming sets at Reading & Leeds Festivals this weekend. Before the band’s set at Reading Festival they recorded this fantastic acoustic version of ‘Undertow‘ for BBC3.

‘Undertow‘ is taken from their forthcoming album ‘The Fool‘, which is released on October 26th.

news: Creatives Needed For Rough Trade Film!

We are looking for artists / illustrators / designers to contribute to
a short animated film being produced for the Music Matters
campaign.

The campaign highlights the worth of music against the current climate
of internet piracy.

So far Music Matters made animated films about artists such as Nick Cave, The Jam, Blind Willie Johnson and many others.

Next in line is a film about Rough Trade Records.

We are looking to tell the story of Rough Trade through a series of
animated concert posters.

The range of styles needs to be totally diverse. Everything from a hand made punk poster to conceptual art. So whatever your style we would love for you to be involved.

We will be animating the designs and typography at the end of the process.

If you’re keen send us some samples of what you do and we’ll get you a
proper brief.

Dylan LeBlanc: Dylan LeBlanc's debut album Paupers Field is out now

Today sees the release ‘Paupers Field‘, the debut album from 20 year old Americana artist Dylan LeBlanc.
On ‘Paupers Field‘ a lost world is brought to life – both in the carefully sculpted songs and rich well of country soul from which those songs emerge. Although the Golden era of Alabama’s fabled Muscle Shoals sound had passed by the time Dylan was born in 1990, his ancestral roots and family background connected him to one of the most significant sources in the rich tapestry of American music.
Despite his age, Dylan’s worn yearning voice already has the mark of aged experience. Neither the feel nor sound of the album, nor the haunted ghost summoning songs he has written, can be faked. ”If Time Was Wasting” for instance, seems to be wrenched from the heart of ever present currents in Deep South life – where the pull of the past is unavoidable.

Heritage in the present springs up everywhere on Paupers Field. Ghosts and demons emerge from the mist in compositions featuring archetypal characters such as “Emma Hartley“ and “The Outlaw Billy John“.

Warpaint: Warpaint announce debut album details

Warpaint will release their debut album, ‘The Fool‘, on October 25th.

The album from the Los Angeles four-piece was produced by Tom Biller (Liars, Sean Lennon). Primal Scream and New Order DJ/collaborator Andrew Weatherall plus Adam Samuels (John Frusciante, Pearl Jam) have added further mixes.

The album features entirely new material and will be released on CD, LP and Download.

Last night Belle and Sebastian revealed a trailer for their forthcoming TV show, which includes a small clip of a new song called “I Want The World To Stop“ taken from the new album “Write About Love“ (to be released on October 11th).

The band also revealed the real artwork for the album, contrary to the black and white image which was doing the rounds last week.

Belle and Sebastian: Belle and Sebastian announce title of new album and artwork competition

Belle and Sebastian have revealed (via a post on Bellandsebastian.com) that their forthcoming album will be called Write About Love.

Stuart Murdoch also wrote on the band’s blog:

“The new record is called Belle and Sebastian Write About Love.

While I was doing the art, I got Kim from the ace Glasgow band, Zoey Van Goey, to write this in chalk in a few secluded spots in Glasgow and I took her picture. If you haven’t already, you can see her on the splash page.

What I was thinking is that it would be fun if some of you tried the same thing, and either filmed yourself doing it, or got someone to take a picture (it would be good to see you with your work!). You can then upload them to our Flickr group here for everyone to see (you will need to sign up to Flickr if not already a member and join the group).

We’ll choose some of the most scenic, artistic and elaborate ones and present the best submissions with a trophy of some sort!

To sum up, I’d like to see pictures or footage of you writing either Belle and Sebastian Write About Love or Write About Love in secret or public places, in the town you live in.

Post them here and remember to use chalk or at least something non-permanent!
