Change is the order of the day, the week, the month; it's the order of our times. The only order.

New roads are in progress.
147, Technology Highway has a toll. 540 is stretching further South by the week.

Stores and restaurants are opening and closing.
At the shopping center at Apex Peakway and 55 South, one sandwich store closed down, and now a Subway has started up. At the corner of High House and Cary Parkway, we now have a Mellow Mushroom restaurant, the hip popular chain of restaurants. But every restaurant that has been in that spot for the past 8 years has not lasted long. We hope it will work for Mellow Mushroom.

And on the Internet, change is even faster. Facebook seems to be making changes weekly, and LinkedIn and Twitter seem to be changing in ways that borrow features from each other. It makes it hard to get really comfortable, when all of a sudden things have been moved around and the look has changed. Interesting yes. Comfortable no.

On Friday October 28 at the St. Francis of Assisi Church on Leesville Road in Raleigh, musician and live wire Diogenes Ruiz produced another rich musical event. This time with:

Diogenes Ruiz has done several Songs of Peace events delighting guests with the warm relaxing spirit of the music.

This event was a fundraiser towards a non-profit to promote sacred music and jazz.

Dogs and Cats in Chatham County Have New Champion: Guardians of Angels

Help raise money for the new Guardians of Angels Adoption Center for cats and dogs. Come to the Saturday 9/24 event at the General Store Cafe in Pittsboro. $20 per person, or $30 a couple. Great music. Great people. Great place. Great cause.

Dogs and cats in Chatham County North Carolina have a new champion.

For all the wonderful resources created for dogs and cats to give them shelter and keep them alive, fed and warm, there are still too many dogs and cats falling through the cracks. There's only so many spaces in shelters, and only so much money budgeted.

But we can do more.

We need to do more.

And Guardians of Angels is going to do more.

Dogs and cats in Chatham County have a new champion in Guardians of Angels. Eager to add additional resources to the community of resources that exist.

Guardians of Angels is set to create a new center for dogs and cats, puppies and kittens in Pittsboro, an Adoption Center.

Speed Camera on 540 West south of RDU Airport

Returning home from a day trip to the mountains around Boone, North Carolina, my son and I took 540 West from 40 East and a sudden bright flash of light lit up the car as we drove under some kind of structure over the road.

Experienced with speed camera's from the Washington DC area,, my son knew right away what it was. But I had not heard a word about use of speed cameras on highways, only cameras in urban areas at intersections.

Quick research online showed mention of a speed camera being tested on 540 West near RDU airport.

A few days later, heading East on 540, I had the chance to examine the overpasses we drove under (as much as we can do at 60 plus miles an hour) and noticed the cameras, not on the overpasses, but instead on a metal structure over the highway, not one that cars drove over, more like a structure meant to post signs over the highway. There were a number of cameras visible from the other side of the highway.

So what we don't know yet is whether or not the cameras are just being tested, or if my son will get a ticket.

The Triangle Area Freelancers' Non-Fiction Conference is April 2, 2011

On Saturday April 2, 2011, the Triangle Area Freelancers are hosting their annual conference, this time on non-fiction. Write Now 2011.

Philip Gerard, author of Creative Nonfiction: Researching and Crafting Stories of Real Life and

Writing a Book That Makes a Difference, will give the keynote speech.

New York literary agent, Rita Rosenkranz will lead several sessions, including hearing 5 minute pitches by authors who were pre-selected (on a first come first serve basis already).

The conference will be held at Wake Technical Community College on Louisberg Road, Northern Wake Campus Building D, between 8 am and 4 pm, lunch is part of the admission fee.

Andy Smith is a Raleigh native, who has spent twenty years devoted to helping others learn about nature and about themselves. In 2010 he completed his first book with select essays about his own outdoor adventures as well as neat stories about teaching. Grey Fox Wilderness Stories was published in December 2010, by Inner River Press, a Raleigh micro-publisher.

Andy founded Grey Fox Wilderness Programs to offer a rich variety of outdoor learning opportunities. He has a full load of camps and camping events listed on his Web site calendar. A summary is listed on this press release about his outdoor school.

A Subscriber-Free Blogger

While most people seek subscribers for their blogs, there is a tremendous freedom to having a blog with no subscribers. Everywhere we have subscribers, they may tire of our content if we go on a writing spree. Even Twitter, and especially Facebook. But with a subscriber-less blog, one can write and post to one's heart content, and only people looking for words that you've used in your content will find it!

This is not a frivolous appreciation, it's a huge freedom to know only those who are looking for something related will stumble upon this trove of random posts and photos. My only concern is this minor one, that my free Google allotment of memory is almost to the 1 gigabyte level. But for very little, I can gain access to my second gigabyte and see about filling that in the next three years!

Umstead Marathon on Saturday March 5th starts with over 180 runners

The annual Umstead Marathon put on by the Godiva Track club happened on Saturday March 5, 2011. Every year they choose a creature from the woods to be on their shirts, glasses and trophy, and this year, more unusual than most, it was a tick!

Godiva Track club member and marathon runner himself, Martin McGaha, volunteered to take pictures for the third year in a row. For a full set of almost 1500 photos from the 2011 race, visit his Peak Photo Media site on Zenfolio.

The winner of the race here admiring his wooden tick trophy! They have a sense of humor after this rigorous race.

"Arnie" The Pet Pad's Pet Blue & Gold Macaw Has Died

Today February 18, 2011, my eye caught notice of the bunch of blue feathers I have hanging on a doorknob that I had gathered from Arnie over the 7 years I had been visiting him. Beautiful long blue feathers of many hues. I felt the warm feeling of appreciation for the sweet relationship we had. I wasn't the only one. Many many people visited Arnie. But I was among the few he would let pet him, a right I had precariously earned. Some of the staff had called me his girlfriend, because he would liven up when he saw me, even when he had been in a bad mood. He loved it when I rubbed his head and helped preen the feathers he couldn't reach.

So I thought to stop by and visit him at The Pet Pad in Cary, where's he's been for about twenty years. I parked my car as I usually do, in front of the Hallmark Store and walked across the parking lot, down the sidewalk, opened the two Pet Pad doors, and quickly scanned the back of the room, to the white perch that was made for him. He wasn't there. Only rarely is he not there. Only when one of the staff has him on their shoulders. Rarely. I looked about the store as I walked towards his perch.

There was a sign. Small letters I couldn't read. I wondered what it would say. Was he sick? Was he temporarily away?

When I got close enough to read, I could not believe my eyes. This species of bird is known to live towards a hundred years old, but the sign said he had passed away. Just three days before, on February 15, 2011.

Arnie was hatched May 17, 1990 from a breeder in Fayetteville, NC. He was a gift from our father who named him after his favorite golfer Arnold Palmer. He was still a hand-feeding baby when he joined our family in Sept. 1990 as the store mascot.

We want to thank everyone who came to visit Arnie. He was a happy and out-going macaw who loved being the center of attention and truly enjoyed all the people who came in to see him.

Arnie gave us 20 years of love and fun and we will miss him very much. --Brad & Gina

He was so young! This was completely unexpected.

I loved Arnie. When I first moved to Cary in 2003, I didn't know many people, and when I discovered him at The Pet Pad I used to come by almost every day after work, to relax and enjoy petting him and talking to him. It took a while to earn his trust, and I did get nipped a few times early on.

He literally recognized me from across the room when I came in the store. He almost always would walk over to his round perch to where I was standing and begin his ways of connecting. Sometimes dancing. Sometimes bending over in a deep bow like gesture. Sometimes turning around and scratching his head, signaling, so it seemed, that he'd like his head scratched. Sometimes I visited for over an hour. Other times I had to leave because other guests wanted to talk to Arnie, and he would be nasty to other people when I was there - as if shooing them away to keep me for himself.

I am opposed to having wild animals as pets, very opposed to it, and knowing that hundreds and thousands of captive "pet" birds are abandoned and neglected I can not support those who breed and sell birds. But, I have befriended three macaws in stores in the last 15 years. Skiddles a Harlequin Macaw, and an unnamed Severe Macaw, and Arnie.These birds have relationships, recognize people, like some people and dislike others. The depth of their relationships is profound.

I am saddened that Arnie will never again greet me dancing back and forth and putting out his foot to step into my hands. Saddened that I won't be able to scratch his head and watch him close his eyes and make gentle sounds of appreciation. Very sad to know his time has come.

I do know that many many local people will slowly find out that the big bird they've admired, and sometimes feared, at The Pet Pad has passed away, and will feel the loss. When a pet store mascot dies, when he's a local celebrity called "Arnie", should there be an obit? A memorial service? Any kind of town-wide announcement to let everyone know? What do you think?

Handling Special Diets with Your Wedding Cake: Are Cup Cakes the Answer?

As I was researching how brides handle dietary restrictions when planning their wedding menus for a blog post for Raleigh area caterer Catering-by-Design, I got curious about wedding cakes.

More than ever before we're aware that many people can't eat just anything. When it's your big celebration, your wedding day, and you want everyone to have some cake, how do you accommodate this great assortment of possible dietary restrictions:

One of the big questions is this, is there a cupcake that is so good, that it could be vegan, gluten, sugar, salt and dairy free and still appeal to all of your guests?

If not, at least you could make different trays of cupcakes for each group.

Help! I'm Not From Around Here, Who Do You Recommend?

Remember when you first came to Raleigh? Remember when you knew nobody and had to find a mechanic, a dentist, a doctor, an after hours health clinic, a realtor to help you learn neighborhoods and buy a house, what restaurants were especially good, and which ones to pass by... Remember that?

With Internet easily accessible and directories at an alltime high, you won't have any trouble looking up local businesses, or getting directions and phone numbers. But you will still need recommendations!

As someone who moved to the Raleigh area in 2003, I've now been in the area almost 8 years. A lot of my initial questions have been answered.

Where Can We Find Oprah's Network on Jan 1 2011?

On January 1, 2011 at noon EST Oprah's OWN network will debut.

It's a 50/50 joint venture with Discovery Channel. The big question that many of us will have is where can we find OWN on our cable TV? It's hard enough finding long time shows much less new ones.

OWN will be on the Discovery Health Channel.
If you don't know if you get that channel a call to your cable service would be the next step.

Oprah.com has a page called channel finder, to help people locate the channel number for Discovery Health and OWN. The page content doesn't show up on my iPhone, hopefully it shows up for you. http://www.oprah.com/own/channel_finder.html

I've seen previews of some of the shows with thought leaders and they look VERY interesting.

The club meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday's first thing in the morning at 7:40 for one hour. The club has a friendly and fun spirit, with members from many nationalities.
