Tuesday 10th May to Thursday 19th May 2011 – Cairns, Australia
The time has come to leave my temporary home in Port Macquarie now, my destination being cairns. I’m looking forward to meeting up with Katie and James again who are now working in a hostel, and hopefully I can find a job that will keep me going for a while.
I said my goodbyes to people in the morning, including the hostel owners, and was given a lift by Tony to the airport to begin my onward journey. I love the ...

The next two weeks were mainly about working in the hostel and enjoying my free time afterwards. The idea was to stop my money from disappearing whilst using the time to find paid work. The two weeks were hard work, but a great experience.
The next day or two I spent down by the beach after work, body surfing and swimming in the ocean. There are few better ways to spend an afternoon in my opinion. In the evenings I ...

Day 2 as a cleaner in Port Macquarie and it isn’t going very well unfortunately. I was kept up all night by the group of English guys currently in my room, who were very drunk the previous night. They had been in and out of the room all night long, laughing and banging about, resulting in just 2 hours sleep for me. I was a little grumpy this morning.
One guy had been sick in the toilets whilst another had wet the bed during ...

Over the past 7 or 8 years that I have been traveling, it is clear for me to see that times have changed. Technology is moving on at an alarming pace, and it seems we are all busting a gut to keep up. Most people have a hand-held device of some sort, and many take them along on their travels. As I am one of these people, and always have my mini laptop with me, I felt it appropriate to talk a little about security.
I have been the victim of ...

Today was the first day in my new job as hostel cleaner in Port Macquarie Backpackers. I was up and ready by 9:30am and went to see Tony and Vera for instructions. I wouldn’t say I was excited, but it was the first step in extending my stay in Australia.
The first day was all about watching Tony and seeing what he does. This hostel is one of the cleanest and most well maintained hostels I have ever stayed in, and it’s clear to ...

As more and more people are finding, it’s the actual deciding to go that is the hardest thing to overcome. I take a look back to when I first took the plunge, and how that decision has altered my life.
I often had the dream to travel as lots of people do. I spent many hours during my working days looking out the window or staring ...

My search for work in Australia so far has seen me travel the entire East Coast, stopping briefly here and there. I have followed the advice of many people regarding where to look and when to look for it, but I decided to use my own initiative, and it paid off. I am on my way to Port Macquarie (Again!)
With a job waiting for me at Port Macquarie Backpackers as a cleaner, it was the chance I needed to cut my spending right ...

Ten years later I returned to the city to experience it the way I wanted to the first time around. This time I knew how to get the most out of my stay here.
The story starts many years back during my college days. A few of my friends had been included in a trip around Italy as part of their History ...

Being back in Newcastle was really pleasing for me today. I awoke late after a much-needed lay in, and felt very content to be in one of my favourite places. All I could think about was going to the beach, but I had a job to do today, and this had to be priority.
My job was to look for work in any shape or form. I wanted to use my time here to join job agencies and ask around for anything ...
